If you grew up with the first iteration of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, one of the elephants in the room as you got older was the casting of the Black and Yellow Ranger. On the hit Fox kids TV series, released in Aug. 1993, Walter Emanuel Jones, who is African American, portrayed the first Black Ranger, and Thuy Trang, who was Vietnamese, portrayed the first Yellow Ranger. It's hard to believe that the series was unaware of the obvious racial stereotypes, but according to the show's head writer, it wasn't something that crossed their minds.
The Power Rangers franchise was recently covered on the Investigation Discovery series Hollywood Demons and, via Variety, head writer Tony Oliver addressed the casting stereotypes of the original Black and Yellow Ranger. Oliver admitted that it was a "mistake" to have the casting go in that direction, but it was something that they didn't think...

When it comes to historical casting of certain roles on TV and in movies, there are always moments that are later reflected on as being done insensitively, or sometimes just plain wrong. Recently, Tony Oliver, head writer on the original Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers series, shared his belief that the casting of a Black actor and an Asian actress as the Black and Yellow Power Rangers, respectively, was something that was “such a mistake.” However, the comments, made as part of Investigation Discovery’s Hollywood Demons series, have gained a response from Walter Emanuel Jones, the original Black Ranger in the series.
While there has been a lot of agreement with Oliver that the casting was colorblind and a little ignorant, that is not how Jones sees it at all, and he is much more inclined to remember the positive impact his character had as one of the first Black...

Despite the perception of racial insensitivity in his casting, Walter Emanuel Jones is proud to have originated the role of the Black Ranger.
The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers alum recently responded to the show’s head writer Tony Oliver, who said “it was such a mistake” to cast Black and Asian actors as the Black and Yellow Rangers while reflecting on the hit franchise in an episode of Investigation Discovery‘s Hollywood Demons.

Walter Emanuel Jones is proud to be the original Black Power Ranger, regardless of what the show’s former writer thinks.
The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers star said “it was an honor” to originate the role of the Black Ranger in 1993 in response to the show’s previous writer, Tony Oliver, who said that it was a “mistake” to cast him in the part. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers debuted on Fox Kids in August 1993 and became an immediate hit. Even now, it's still one of the most beloved eras of the long-running franchise. However, given when it first aired, the series was, at times, a little culturally insensitive.
For example, a Black actor, Walter Emanuel Jones, was cast as the Black Ranger and an Asian actress, Thuy Trang, was chosen to portray the Yellow Ranger. That's been discussed a lot over the years, with those who worked on the series at the time facing a lot of criticism.
Talking on the "Dark Side of the Power Rangers" episode of Discovery's Hollywood Demons, former Power Rangers showrunner Tony Oliver said, "None of us are thinking stereotypes." He explained that was how the series got to air and ran for two seasons with "the Black character the Black Ranger and the Asian character the Yellow Ranger.

Tony Oliver, head writer of the good old Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, is admitting that it was a mistake to cast a Black actor as the Black Ranger(Walter Emanuel Jones) and Thuy Trang, an Asian actor, as the Yellow Ranger. The episode “Dark Side of the Power Rangers” zeroed in on key details that while MightyMorphin Power Rangers debuted on Fox Kids in August 1993 and went on to become a cultural phenomenon during the next three years, it was only after two seasons that an assistant highlighted that matching actors’ ethnicities to their ranger colors perpetuated stereotypes. Tony Oliver, head writer of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, has addressed casting decisions made during the show’s original production. In the latest episode of Hollywood Demons on Investigation Discovery, Oliver reflected on the implications of casting Walter Emanuel Jones, a Black actor, as the Black Ranger, and Vietnamese-American actress Thuy Trang as the Yellow Ranger. The episode, titled “Dark Side of the Power Rangers,” focuses on the origins of the 1993 children’s series and the pressures involved in its creation.
Oliver said that stereotypes were not considered at the time the casting choices were made. “None of us are thinking stereotypes,” he explained. He added that it was his assistant who raised concerns during a meeting. “It was such a mistake,” he said.
The first version of the Yellow Ranger role was played by Audri Dubois, who appeared in the unaired pilot before leaving the production following a contract disagreement.

Actor Audri Dubois detailed her experience while filming "Day of the Dumpster", the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers promo pilot. That episode's tight budget had production cutting corners, which led to working conditions that were "a little abusive to the actors".
Power Rangers star Audri Dubois said the show's working conditions were so severe, one of the actors suffered heat stroke. Dubois played Trini Kwan/Yellow Ranger in the original version of "Day of the Dumpster", the show's original (unaired) pilot; she was replaced by Thuy Trang in the reshot episode, which premiered Aug. 28, 1993 on the Fox network. "When we're shooting the pilot, we're out in the desert — it's got to be 110 degrees — and someone has heat stroke," Dubois recalled (per Entertainment Weekly). "It was one of the bad guys in a wet suit with a rubber mask over their head with pinholes for the eyes and mouth. He's flopping around like a fish.

One of the most popular TV series for '90s kids was Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. No one can forget seeing the Red, Blue, Black, Yellow, Pink, and Green Rangers fighting against the evil sorceress Rita Repulsa and her minions. This show became a weekly addiction for children; they all had their favorite ranger. But halfway through filming the second season, Austin St. John (who played Red Ranger Jason Lee Scott), Walter Jones (who played Black Ranger Zack Taylor), and Thuy Trang (who played Yellow Ranger Trini Kwan) all mysteriously left the show and were replaced by other actors.
Since their departure, fans have been eager to uncover the truth behind the actors' exit. It's a mystery that has captivated the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers universe, at least until the publication of a video in which St. John and Jones shared their reasons for leaving the show, allowing fans to understand their perspective.

Austin St. John, Walter Emanuel Jones, and Thuy Trang left Power Rangers midway through season 2, and the franchise would have been drastically different had the original Red, Black, and Yellow Rangers remained on the team. With three cast members set to exit the series after not getting their contracts renewed, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers essentially had two options. Either Jason, Zack, and Trini were going to be recast, or the show would have to introduce three new characters. Power Rangers went with the latter and introduced Rocky (Steve Cardenas), Aisha (Karan Ashley), and Adam (Johnny Yong Bosch).
The Power Rangers franchise would never be the same again after the exits of the original Red, Yellow, and Black Rangers for several reasons. Zordon demoted Jason and made Tommy the leader of the Power Rangers instead in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers season 2, one of the strangest moments in the shows history. Jason David Franks Tommy Oliver first appeared in Mighty Morphin season 1, episode 17, Green With Evil: Part I, the beginning of a fourth-part episode that introduced the Green Ranger. While Tommy was initially brainwashed into working for Rita Repulsa, he eventually broke free of her spell and joined the Power Rangers as the sixth and final member of what became known as the original team.
Tommys Green Ranger run would continue until Mighty Morphin season 2, episodes 12-13, Green Ranger No More. Lord Zedd finally accomplished what Rita had failed to do and eradicated the Green Rangers powers. Losing his powers took a toll on Tommy and caused him to leave Angel Grove for a while, but his time away from the Power Rangers would not last long.

Thuy Trangs legacy as Trini Kwan will forever live on in Power Rangers, and the franchise has recently put the original Yellow Ranger front and center in several stories across different media. Even though the Power Rangers chronology continued past Mighty Morphin, the franchise never stopped telling stories about its original heroes. Not only did several Mmpr actors return for cameos and even recurring roles in other shows and movies, but properties like the comics and the games regularly revisit the teenagers with attitude audiences were introduced to in 1993.
Trini Kwans final appearance in Power Rangers was in season 2, episode 20, "Opposites Attract" released in 1994. This was also the final proper appearances of Jason Lee Scott and Zack Taylor before Austin St. John, Walter Emanuel Jones, and Thuy Trang left the show. The original Red, Black, and Yellow Rangers would still appear in a couple of other episodes, although through reused footage and stand-in body doubles.

The Power Rangers franchise was originally only going to consist of a single season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. With the series becoming an overnight sensation, the first season was extended, and a second season was ordered. Rather than just mimic what made Season One successful, Season 2 changes things up, and becomes more ambitious in its storytelling.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Season 2 is an improvement in every way over its predecessor. There are more ongoing plots, more interesting multi-part episodes, and, with the introduction of Lord Zedd, a far superior main villain. This season sees the end of Tommy as the Green Ranger and the beginning of his career as the White Ranger and features the first permanent Ranger departures in the series.

The Power Rangers timeline isn't always clear and straightforward. While most seasons are set in the years in which they air, others are set in the future or even parallel universes. Things can be even trickier to understand when there are specials and moves that exist outside the main television series but are still canon.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always has a confusing place in the franchise's timeline. A reunion special featuring many returning actors from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers; some have found it difficult to understand when it's set because of how it ties into Power Rangers Spd, Power Rangers Dino Fury, and Power Rangers Cosmic Fury. Executive Producer Simon Bennett has confirmed when Once & Always is set, but it's also possible to understand simply by paying close attention.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers replaced three original team members in season 2, setting a trend for future Power Rangers casts. Power Rangers has often utilized power transfers over recasts, allowing multiple characters to share Ranger powers. Original Red and Black Rangers, Jason and Zack, eventually returned to the franchise after their initial departure.
Power Rangers replaced three cast members in 1994, after which the franchise was never the same. In 2023, as part of the celebration of the shows 30th anniversary, Power Rangers brought back multiple Mighty Morphin actors between Once & Always and Cosmic Fury. This includes David Yost and Walter Emanuel Jones, the latter of which had not been on the show since Mmpr season 2. Once & Always combined Rangers from two generations and delivered some interactions I never thought I would see, such as Zack and Rocky or Zack and Adam.

You can’t keep “The Crow” down. That’s kind of its whole thing. Naturally, the concept of the wronged dead who return from their grave seeking vengeance — inspired by James O’Barr’s comics of the same name — has sprung forth a franchise, which spans five total films since Alex Proyas’ iconic, stylish film debuted in 1994. The original film remains a heartbreaking watch after the tragic on-set death of star Brandon Lee, but it also holds up as a stunning, massively influential goth rock urban fantasy — not to mention an early comic book adaptation.
The rest of the “The Crow” movies? Well, they’re not quite so enduring, despite a steady stream of familiar faces in the casts, including Kirsten Dunst, Edward Furlong, Mia Kirschner, Fred Ward, David Boreanaz and now, Bill Skarsgard and FKA Twigs in the long-awaited remake.

Not counting movies or specials, there are 973 episodes of Power Rangers. With the entire cast typically swapped out between seasons, the majority of Rangers only appear in a small fraction of the overall franchise. However, the nature of how the series originally operated allowed its earliest cast members to be exceptions to this rule.
Power Rangers from the classic Mighty Morphin' era appeared in more episodes than any others. Between Season 1 of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers being 60 episodes, making it the longest season in the series, and its characters appearing in more seasons beyond it, several Rangers from this era have appeared in hundreds of episodes. In total, there are ten Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, but more famous characters like Tommy Oliver and Kimberly Ann Hart make far more appearances than their often overlooked peers.

When it comes to theatrical movie releases, critics can dominate the conversation surrounding the film. With the advent of social media, it is easier for certain narratives surrounding films to be crafted to influence fans before the film fully debuts. This critical period before a film is viewed by fans leaves the only narrative about the film currently available.
The true voice of a film comes from the fans themselves. The Power Rangers franchise has been thriving for decades, and many of these fans have welcomed this new live-action addition with open arms. Several key pieces of the film were criminally underrated by critics and deserved praise for elevating the film.

Power Rangers never gets enough credit for having some of the most bizarre action scenes ever put to the screen. From Rangers getting baked into giant pizzas to a prison fight over jello, Marvel and DC wish they had superhero action as wild as this. It isn’t just the footage adapted from the Japanese series Super Sentai that stands out but the American shot action as well. They were not about to be shown up by the Japanese multi-colored spandex fights.

A potential Power Ragners show has been cancelled after 2 years in development at Netflix, leaving plans for a reboot in limbo. Hasbro now seeks a new creative partner for the Power Rangers franchise. The reasons for the show's sudden cancellation have not been revealed.
A new Power Rangers Netflix show has reportedly been canceled after two years in development. Debuting in 1993 as the TV show Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the franchise has grown to become one of the most beloved and successful in popular culture, consisting of 30 seasons of television across 22 themed shows, three theatrical movies, and a television special. The 30th and most recent season, 2023's Power Rangers Cosmic Fury, was intended to be the last within the established canon, with a reboot season planned for a 2025 release.

The original Power Rangers movie is not canon, only Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie fits in the main chronology. The Power Rangers movie suits had armored designs, making them more realistic and advanced compared to the show's classic spandex. The 1995 Power Rangers movie is a standalone, nostalgic experience.
Rewatching Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie (1995) almost 30 years later can be very nostalgic, but it also reveals some harsh truths about the first Power Rangers film. In the world of television, a “pilot” episode is the one chance you have to make or break your show getting to air. If it doesn’t make the cut, it’s consigned to the film vault of history, never to be seen. It’s extremely unheard of for a franchise to get two pilots. Star Trek: The Original Series being one of those rare second chances.
Bafflingly it’s been assumed for years that Mighty Morphin Power Rangers had three pilots. As Tony Oliver, co-writer and developer of the Power Rangers pilot, first revealed at Power Morphicon in 2007, “the pilot episode, which turned into the first episode [“Day of the Dumpster”], they actually did three times.”
That means they shot three separate pilot episodes, right? Well, yes, but also no. It’s very complicated so we did the biggest deep dive research on the Power Rangers pilot ever. What we uncovered changes everything...

The unique miniseries diverges from established Ranger canon, offering a new storyline which features the original team reuniting after being driven apart years before. Only a few Mighty Morphin Power Rangers episodes or arcs are essential to the main storyline, such as "Green With Evil". "Day of the Dumpster" is where it all begins. The original Power Rangers series featured a lot of multi-episode story arcs.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the original Power Rangers show, has hundreds of episodes, but only a few of them are essential to the main storyline and cannot be deemed as filler. Given the episodic nature of the show, it is safe to say Mmpr has more “filler” than it has plot-heavy episodes. The same applies to most seasons in Power Rangers’ chronological order, although later entries had more overarching storylines compared to Mighty Morphin.
Almost every Mmpr episode follows the same formula, which would then be applied in all other seasons. Naturally, much of it is inspired by the Super Sentai shows, which also had a very defined rhythm to them.

The first few Power Rangers seasons are very nostalgic, but not everything about the show has aged well. Some Power Rangers scenes are hard to get through on a rewatch. Difficult Power Rangers scenes to get through include poorly aged moments but also scenes tied to real-life events, such as behind-the-scenes issues and losses of cast members.
The 1990s’ Power Rangers seasons are synonymous with nostalgia, but not everything about the show has aged well, and some scenes are hard to watch now. The Power Rangers chronology goes well beyond the events of Mighty Morphin and the Zordon era. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always celebrated the franchise's 30th anniversary and featured actors reprising their original roles, including a special tribute to Harvey Garvey. Harvey Garvey was a talk show host in the Power Rangers series and made his first and only on-screen appearance in season 2, episode 33. In the film, a tombstone engraved with "Harvey Garvey 1953-2022" is shown, indicating that the beloved talk show host passed away, serving as a heartfelt callback and shoutout to actor Kim Strauss.
Fans were certainly not expecting the reference to Harvey Garvey in 2023's Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always, but they certainly welcomed it with open arms. First created in 1993, Power Ranges became such a huge pop culture sensation that spawned not only multiple TV shows and movies, but also a massive series of Power Rangers-themed toys, video games, and even comic books that feature the Rangers as zombies.
