9 Best Sci-Fi Movies Streaming on Netflix Right Now
Image
Netflix boasts a solid sci-fi film library, so it can be tough to decide where to start.

The streamer is currently home to modern hits like “Godzilla Minus One” and “Furiosa,” classics that deserve to be seen like “Starship Troopers” and fun-for-the-whole-family offerings like the Oscar-nominated animated hit “The Wild Robot.” With a library like that, there really is something for everyone.

Below, we laid out nine sci-fi film options to check out when you’re next at a loss for what to watch.

Toho Godzilla Minus One

Every modern attempt at a new Godzilla film has consistently been weak in the same category: the human element. That is, until “Godzilla Minus One” rolled through town. The film is set in Japan right after WWII and follows a former soldier who rallies a group to face off against the titan as a way to redeem himself from an earlier encounter during the war.

Lumière Institute and festival director Thierry Frémaux called Mann — director of such features as Heat, The Last of the Mohicans, The Insider, Ali and Collateral — a major artist “straight out of Hollywood mythology…whose mark on cinema is everlasting.”

With true independence — and at times, a certain solitude — he is one of the most important filmmakers in the history of cinema.”

Why we need more fantasy movies for adults
Image
Most people hear "fantasy movies" and think about Harry Potter or The Chronicles of Narnia, or maybe they imagine galloping unicorns and dragons arcing through the sky. Tales brimming with whimsy and magical children populate the majority of the fantasy film genre at the moment. Those looking for something darker or weirder will likely struggle to find it on the big screen. There's plenty of dark fantasy shows available on television between Game of Thrones, The Sandman, The Witcher, Penny Dreadful, Interview with the Vampire, etc., but significantly less at the movie theater.

A majority of the big fantasy movies coming out these days tend to be geared toward younger audiences. They're family-friendly. What is the reason for that? Probably because of money. Fantasy movies tend to be a lot more expensive to make than other genres due to the sheer spectacle, meaning studios want to make them as accessible...

Composer Alexandre Desplat on a Summer That Includes ‘Jurassic World,’ ‘Phoenician Scheme’ and His First Hollywood Bowl Show: ‘It’s a Dream I’ve Had Since I Was a Kid’
Image
On any list of the most admired composers working in film today, Alexandre Desplat would be either at the top or very close to it. That’s not just for the quality of the work — although, as his list of 11 Oscar nominations and two wins would indicate, there is that — but the expanse of styles and sheer breadth of his filmography, whether he’s doing ear-ticklingly eccentric scores for smaller-scale pictures or satisfyingly symphonic ones for the blockbusters.

The French scorer is about to undergo a Hollywood composer’s rite of passage, which some would say is overdue, conducting his first full night of music at the Hollywood Bowl this coming Tuesday night. It will finally answer the longstanding question: Who would win in a fight —”Godzilla” or “The Queen”? But seriously, having the music of monster movies and royal dramas on the same bill will make for a full-service...

What to Know about Frankenstein, Guillermo del Toro's Movie Starring Jacob Elordi, Oscar Isaac, and Mia Goth
Image
Guillermo del Toro is building a monster. Fresh off of his third Oscar win for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, the writer-director is fulfilling a lifelong dream: making his own adaptation of Mary Shelley’s beloved Gothic novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. You can watch the teaser trailer here.

Del Toro has been working on a Frankenstein film for more than a decade. “My favorite novel in the world is Frankenstein,” he told Collider in 2010. “I’m going to misquote it horribly, but the monster says, ‘I have such love in me, more than you can imagine. But, if I cannot provoke it, I will provoke fear.’ ” It’s an idea that inspired del Toro’s career-spanning love for the monsters inside and outside all of us. Now he’s finally returning to the source.

If making a movie is a bit like piecing together a body — bear with...

David Zaslav Is the Good Guy? Why He Might Have Saved Turner Classic Movies
Image
We’ve made no secret of our quibbles with David Zaslav’s oversight of Turner Classic Movies. In June 2023, I wrote a critical op-ed (“Dear David Zaslav: Gutting TCM Will Not Help You Win Filmmakers Back to Warner Bros.”) right after the Warner Bros. Discovery CEO presided over layoffs amounting to 80 percent of the staff.

So it might come as some surprise that I’m now feeling bullish about the news that Zaslav and Warner Bros. co-heads Mike DeLuca and Pam Abdy will retain creative control over TCM as Warner Bros. Discovery prepares to split into two companies. (This arrangement was first reported by Variety and confirmed by IndieWire.) One will be the Studios and Streaming group, a business that oversees film and TV production, with Zaslav retained as CEO. The other is the Global Networks group, home to the present company’s entire suite of linear TV channels, with new CEO Gunnar Wiedenfels,...

The 25 Scariest Movies on Netflix: ‘Smile,’ ‘Hereditary,’ and More
Image
[Editor’s note: This guide was published in fall 2021 and has been updated multiple times since.]

As Netflix’s library of films ebbs and flows, finding the right movie to watch can feel like bailing out an ocean with a spoon. And if you’re looking for a quality horror movie in particular, the search only gets harder. With the reality that Horror is one of the cheapest genres to produce, streamers like Netflix are cluttered with a veritable tsunami of bloody titles that sometimes seem indistinguishable from one another. Curating the 25 scariest movies on Netflix is then quite a process of selection and reduction.

If you’re looking for a good horror movie to watch on Netflix that will truly scare you, picking a final selection can prove a more daunting task than sitting through yet another “Haunting of Hill House” rewatch; with or without its beloved “Bly Manor” chaser. But while the streamer’s priorities seem to shift as quickly as its content selection grows,...

This Episode Of It's Always Sunny Was Inspired By Jaws And An Infamous Horror Novel
Image
The gang on "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" love riffing on popular culture, both onscreen as their characters and in the episodes themselves. From the bonkers Bruce Willis-inspired antics of the season 3 episode "The Gang Gets Held Hostage" to a way less classy take on the classic noir "The Postman Always Rings Twice" that involves a whole lot of diarrhea poisoning, elements of pop culture have been riffed on throughout the long-running series. There's one episode, however, that almost feels like a pop culture Easter egg hunt, and that's the glorious "The Gang Goes to a Water Park" from season 12.

"The Gang Goes to a Water Park" has it all — a great nod to Steven Spielberg's seminal feature film "Jaws," references to one of the most infamous horror novels of the 21st century, an extended riff on an oft-forgotten Nicolas Cage movie, cameos from some very famous TV showrunners,...

To celebrate the release of 'The Old Guard 2,' here are 7 sci-fi action movies to stream now
Image
These streaming sci-fi movies pack in the action, style, and serious world-building.

I caught “M3GAN 2.0” in theaters, and I have a take that goes against the grain of popular opinion: I loved it. Now, it’s not a horror movie like the first “M3GAN.” It’s really a sci-fi action-comedy movie, and I think that’s why it’s struggling at the box office. That said, those audience members who have seen “M3GAN 2.0” love it even more than the first! The sequel has a higher audience score on Rotten Tomatoes than the original, while the critics, I guess, didn’t appreciate the change in genre. Fair enough — but for a sci-fi action movie, it’s a lot of fun. And it got me thinking of other great sci-fi action movies on streaming, so here’s a list of the top 7 you can stream right now.

Jaws @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story Review – A Perfect Deep Dive Into Cinema’s Greatest Blockbuster
Image
Five decades ago, Steven Spielberg changed cinema forever with a malfunctioning mechanical shark and a two-note musical motif that still makes beachgoers nervous. Laurent Bouzereau’s “Jaws @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story” arrives as both celebration and archaeological dig, examining how a troubled production became the template for modern moviemaking. Bouzereau, whose documentary expertise spans from “Music by John Williams” to countless Spielberg retrospectives, brings the perfect sensibility to this project—part film historian, part cultural anthropologist.

The National Geographic production benefits from extraordinary access, featuring candid conversations with Spielberg himself alongside a murderer’s row of contemporary filmmakers who grew up in Jaws’ shadow. What emerges in these lean 90 minutes isn’t just another making-of documentary, but a fascinating study of how artistic accidents can reshape entire industries.

The film traces Peter Benchley’s novel from conception through its transformation into cinema’s first true summer blockbuster, revealing...

This Netflix Monster Movie With 90% On Rotten Tomatoes Is A Must-Watch For Godzilla Fans
Image
Fans of kaiju movies are always on the lookout for new giant monster movies to make their day, and fortunately, this is a great time to follow this genre. Apart from Japan's steady output of amazing films like Takashi Yamazaki's sublime "Godzilla Minus One," other countries have been upping their game considerably in the last decades. Hollywood has long since recovered from Roland Emmerich's 1998 "Godzilla," which was so awful that Toho's "Godzilla: Final Wars" gave its hated monster a humiliating second death in a fight against the real Godzilla. Between Matt Reeves' "Cloverfield," Guillermo del Toro's "Pacific Rim," and Legendary Pictures' ongoing MonsterVerse franchise, Tinseltown has been establishing itself as a reliable hotspot of kaiju entertainment, and in 2006, Korean director luminary Bong Joon Ho of "Parasite" and "Snowpiercer" fame put his own spin on the theme with one of the greatest monster movies ever made, "The Host.

Charlie Hunnam’s Monster-Fighting Epic That Redefined Sci-Fi Is Back on Streaming
Image
This July, Netflix is starting the fireworks early. Pacific Rim, Guillermo del Toro's 2013 monsters vs. robots blockbuster, is coming to the streaming service. Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, and Rinko Kikuchi star in the science fiction extravaganza, which grossed over $400 million Usd from the global box office. Pacific Rim will be available to stream on Netflix starting on July 1. It joins Pacific Rim: The Black, a Netflix-original animated series that is also available to watch on the streamer.

Pacific Rim came about in the wake of another project collapsing: del Toro's long-dreamed-of adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness. The film was penned by del Toro and Travis Beacham, and was conceptualized as a loving homage to mecha anime and kaiju movies. The film, which bore a $190 million budget, was filmed in Toronto, Ontario, Canada; it was del Toro's first film produced there, and it has subsequently become his home base.

The Sci-Fi Movie That Killed Guillermo Del Toro's At The Mountains Of Madness Adaptation
Image
There's no movie I'm more excited for in 2025 than Guillermo del Toro's "Frankenstein." The sumptuous-looking trailer hints that del Toro's "Frankenstein" could be the truest adaptation yet of Mary Shelley's "The Modern Prometheus," but it's also unmistakably his movie; he considers this to be part of a thematic trilogy with "Nightmare Alley" and "Pinocchio."

Del Toro is one of the foremost fantasy and horror directors we have working today. "Frankenstein" will bring him back to directing outright science-fiction for the first time since 2013's "Pacific Rim."

Besides "Frankenstein," there's another classic sci-fi story that del Toro has long wanted to adapt: H.P. Lovecraft's "At The Mountains of Madness." Published in 1936 (shortly before Lovecraft's death), the story follows a university research team in Antarctica. When some of the explorers are found brutally murdered, geologist William Dyer and his student Danforth investigate and come across a prehistoric city, home...

Demon Slayer: Ufotable May Finally Give Hayao Miyazaki the Competition He Needs
Image
Over many years have passed, and one name still stands as a towering figure of anime’s international prestige: Hayao Miyazaki. The creator is a multiple-time recipient of the prestigious Academy Awards and is also known for the Oscar-winning Spirited Away, setting up a benchmark of anime around the world. But since 2020, there has been a new contender that has slowly gained attention for its jaw-dropping animation. You guessed right, it is Ufotable’s anime adaptation of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.

With the series already claiming the position of the highest-grossing film of all time, it’s not a far-fetched idea to see Demon Slayer bask in the glory of the Oscars. And with Ufotable’s continued ambitions, Miyazaki may finally face a worthy competition that the industry hasn’t offered him in years

Why Demon Slayer Deserves a Seat at the Oscars

Demon Slayer‘s first big-screen project,...

This Back To The Future Star Made A Hilarious Cameo In It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia
Image
Fxx's "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" will be premiering its 17th season in July, and along with the record-breaking new season and a surprise crossover beyond their collaboration with "Abbott Elementary" comes the celebration of 20 years on the air. Who would have thought that of all the major shows, both network and/or on basic cable, the raunchy "Seinfeld" of the 21st century would make television history as the longest-running live-action scripted American sitcom?

Naturally, with at least two decades worth of some of the best dark comedy ever produced on television, "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" has had its fair share of notable guest stars. Some of the most memorable guests include Academy Award-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, who has appeared on the series as Pappy McPoyle, the patriarch of the comically disgusting McPoyle family. Emmy-winner Jason Sudeikis has also appeared on the series as an ex-member of the Paddy's Pub Gang,...

Director's 98% Rt Debut Movie Named Best Horror Of The 21st Century
Image
Hollywood insiders, including celebrated directors and actors, have named Jordan Peele's directorial debut Get Out the best horror movie of the 21st century. The 2017 film has garnered critical acclaim ever since its release, achieving a 98% "fresh" score on the movie review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. It was already widely considered one of the best horror movies of the past 10 years, but this recognition is on a whole different plane.

This week, in a poll published by The New York Times compiling the votes of over 500 major names in the film industry, Get Out ranked the highest out of any horror moviereleased this century. The list resulting from the poll, entitled "100 Best Movies of the 21st Century," ranks Get Out eighth overall, making it the only horror movie in the top 50. The next highest-ranked film which could be categorized as horror is Pan's Labyrinth at number 54, although Guillermo Del Toro...

“Had a huge impact on me”: One Series George R.R. Martin Calls ‘The Precursor to Star Trek’ That Changed His Life
Image
Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin claimed that one of his earliest inspirations was a sci-fi show from the ‘50s, which he called the precursor to Star Trek. The show, Rocky Jones, Space Ranger, was aired in 1951 and followed the adventures of a group of intergalactic police patrol led by Rocky Jones, who enforced the law on different planets.

In a panel discussion at TIFF, Martin named several shows of the past as his inspiration, including Space Cadet and Captain Video. However, he named Rocky Jones, Space Ranger as one of his other favorites. He said,

I was very young when Captain Video was on, and a little later, Rocky Jones Space Ranger, which had a huge impact on me, a very cool show, [and a] sort of precursor to Star Trek, if you actually kind of look at it.

Martin has often cited prominent sci-fi shows and stories as his foundations,...

'Black Panther' Only MCU Film That Makes Nyt's Top 100 Movies of 21st Century
Image
The MCU is one of the most popular movie franchises of all time, but that doesn't mean it is as revered as other, more critically-acclaimed cinema. The Avengers franchise has made billions for Marvel Studios, but it's not often they make the cut of the "Best Of" all-time lists. However, the New York Times just released their Best Movies of the 21st Century list, voted on by select actors and filmmakers, and the highest-rated MCU movie on Rotten Tomatoes has made the cut.

The New York Times has unveiled The 100 Best Movies of the 21st Century, and while superheroes were mostly absent, one beloved MCU title made the list. The three-time Oscar-winning film Black Pantherlanded at the #96 spot on the list, sandwiched between Gravity (#97)and The Worst Person in the World (#95). Ryan Coogler's Black Panther is one of two superhero movies to be voted in the top 100, while Christopher Nolan...

George R.R. Martin on His Unpublished Horror Thriller Book: “It was a great era…”
Image
George R.R. Martin reminisced about the time he was writing his unpublished historical horror novel and the challenges he faced back in the day when the Internet was pretty much nonexistent. Despite the limited resources, he remembers it fondly.

While speaking with David Anthony Durham via Random House Events, the famed fantasy author reflected on how people think they know history, but the truth is that we only rely on documents that people before us have passed down, which often leads to contradictions. Martin recalled one incident, eventually revealing what he was working on at that time:

That was really brought home to me many decades ago when I was writing a novel—never published—about the yellow journalism in New York City in the 1890s, and it was a great era. There were 14 daily newspapers in New York. I was writing a story, sort of a historical horror novel,...

The Stephen King Film Guillermo del Toro Calls “haunting and tragic” Is Now Streaming for Free
Image
How many exceptional films has Guillermo del Toro turned you on to? The Oscar-winning director is forever championing beloved classics and under-seen efforts via social media. We’ve featured many of his recommendations right here, and today we are back with another!

This time, we’ve got a fascinating recommendation in store for you. Today’s pick is a film based on a Stephen King story, featuring the great David Cronenberg at the helm. If you haven’t guessed, we’re talking about the stone-cold classic The Dead Zone.

The Mimic director once praised The Dead Zone via Twitter (it’s still not X to me). His tweet reads:

In the eve of elections I re-watched Cronenberg's The Dead Zone… As haunting and tragic as always… pic.twitter.com/hiWiqIPKum

— Guillermo del Toro (@RealGDT) October 23, 2018

That’s a short and sweet endorsement, but haunting and tragic are both fitting adjectives to describe The Dead Zone.

Catherine Hardwicke Praises Heath Ledger, Talks ‘Twilight’ at Mediterrane Film Festival Masterclass
Image
Steps away from set pieces featured in the Gladiator franchise inside Malta’s historic Fort Ricasoli, veteran filmmaker Catherine Hardwicke delivered an epic two-hour-plus masterclass fitting of its backdrop during the Mediterrane Film Festival on Wednesday morning.

Hardwicke, who is also currently serving on the island fest’s jury, covered nearly all aspects of the craft for the “Fix It in Prep” session which was moderated by The Hollywood Reporter. She recalled how she made so many of the films on her resume like the gritty drama Thirteen, the skateboarding pic Lords of Dogtown, the beloved teen vampire classic Twilight, the friendship tearjerker Miss You Already, the genre series Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities and more.

Twilight lore figured prominently in the discussion, much of which has been documented in anniversary interviews and earlier versions of Hardwicke’s presentation, including how star Robert Pattinson hand picked her line “Hold on tight,...

George R.R. Martin: This 95% Rt Score Guillermo del Toro Masterpiece Is One of the Greatest Fantasy Films Ever Made
Image
A master in the fantasy genre, George R.R. Martin knows a good story when he sees one—and he believes Guillermo del Toro’s 2006 movie Pan’s Labyrinth is one of the greatest movies ever. A long-time fan and dream collaborator of the Mexican filmmaker, Martin is in awe of the vivid and disturbing visuals presented in the dark fantasy film.

Revealing his top ten favorite movies of all time, the renowned author shared via The Daily Beast his must-watch movies, ranking Pan’s Labyrinth in the eighth spot. Praising the director and the cast members, Martin also emphasized how the creatures were like no one he has ever seen before:

Del Toro’s visual style is as vivid and disturbing as it is unique. His fairies are about as far from Tinkerbell as one can get, his faun is a creature like none we have ever seen before, and his eyeless...

Steve: Cillian Murphy is an inspirational teacher in Netflix’s prestige drama
Image
Netflix’s movies – to me, anyway – always fall neatly into two categories. There are the big audience blockbusters, such as The Electric State, Carry-On, and the upcoming The Old Guard 2 and Happy Gilmore 2, and then there’s the prestige fare. Sometimes the two categories meet, such as with the Knives Out movies, but for the most part, they are distinct. As much as some of their blockbusters seem to vanish into the ether of streaming, they’ve also bankrolled some intriguing prestige fare that rank among the most acclaimed films of our era, such as Roma, Marriage Story, The Irishman, and many others. After a quiet 2024 that saw them throw all their eggs into the Emilia Perez basket, the streamer is back with a bumper crop of awards fare this year, including Noah Baumbach’s Jay Kelly, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, and more.

Among them is a low-key English drama called Steve,...

When it comes to epic fantasy and horror pieces, very few can surpass the extensive talent that is Guillermo del Toro, the king of complicated monsters. If anything, the mastermind has rarely had any project over the years that wasn’t tremendously praised by both fans and critics worldwide, never ceasing to leave his audiences baffled with his works.

But, as it turns out, the filmmaker-author hasn’t only lured in critics and general fans and viewers with his charms, but even the widely celebrated writer George R.R. Martin! This is true considering how his 95% rated critically acclaimed flick from 2006 is actually on the Game of Thrones writer’s top 10 movies of all time: Pan’s Labyrinth.

James Gunn Reveals DC Has More Scrapped Projects Than Fans Realize
Image
Several DC projects have been scrapped over the years. However, DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn recently revealed that the list is longer than fans realize.

Responding to a list of scrapped projects that span decades, shared by X user Bradley Osborn, Gunn said, "Great list. So many more too!" The list includes titles like a third Batman film from legendary director Tim Burton, Batman: Year One from filmmaker Darren Aronofsky, a Superman movie starring Nicolas Cage as the titular hero, a JJ Abrams-directed Superman project and a sequel to Superman Returns.

Great list. So many more too!— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) June 19, 2025

While Gunn didn't name names, Warner Bros. has quietly buried dozens of DC projects over the years. Among the most famous is George Miller's Justice League: Mortal, a nearly greenlit epic that would have starred Armie Hammer as Batman and D.J. Cotrona as Superman. Joss Whedon...
