With Help From President Obama, Baseball Doc ‘The Turnaround’ Takes Swing At Oscars
Image
Former Pres. Obama is going to bat for a baseball-themed documentary.

The ex-potus sent an Instagram message to his 36 million+ followers on the social media platform, urging them to check out The Turnaround, a short film in Oscar contention directed by Kyle Thrash and co-directed and produced by Oscar winner Ben Proudfoot. Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama serve as executive producers of the documentary.

“Sports have the power to bring us together – helping change attitudes and culture in ways that may seem subtle, but that ultimately makes us think differently about ourselves,” Obama writes. “The Turnaround follows the story of a devoted baseball fan determined to inspire his city while navigating his own private struggles. Check it out on Netflix.”

The city – Philadelphia. The fan – Jon McCann.

The Turnaround dials back to McCann’s upbringing, as a son born to teen parents in tight economic circumstances.

‘Will & Harper,’ ‘No Other Land,’ ‘Frida,’ ‘Queendom,’ ‘The Bibi Files’ & More Make Doc NYC Shortlist Of Year’s Best Documentaries
Image
No Other Land, the powerful documentary set in a Palestinian community of the occupied West Bank, may lack U.S. distribution, but it’s got awards momentum behind it.

The film directed by a collective of Palestinian and Israeli filmmakers earned a place on Doc NYC’s coveted Short List — the festival’s nod to what it considers to be among the year’s best feature documentaries. The list – a harbinger of potential traction with Oscar voters — also gave recognition to Will & Harper, a Netflix film built around a road trip taken by Will Ferrell and his longtime friend Harper Steele after Harper came out as trans.

Both No Other Land and Will & Harper earned nominations for Best Documentary Feature at the Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards announced earlier this week. Also pulling off the Doc NYC-Critics’ Choice double is Sugarcane, the National Geographic documentary investigating the disappearance of Indigenous children...

Who Is Jon McCann? 'The Turnaround' Tells the Story of the Phillies Fan Who Inspired a Season
Image
The Philadelphia Phillies racked up 95 wins during the 2024 season, securing a spot in the playoffs. But just a year prior, the Major League Baseball team wasn’t looking so good. It kicked off 2023 with the acquisition of star shortstop Trea Turner with an 11-year, $300 million contract, but his season got off to a rough start. The city’s notoriously vocal fans weren’t pleased, to say the least, but Jon McCann, a superfan who goes by The Philly Captain on Instagram, wondered what might happen if the local crowd greeted Turner with cheers instead of boos.

What happened next surprised just about everyone — and that story is chronicled in The Turnaround, a documentary short co-directed by Philadelphia native Kyle Thrash and Oscar winner Ben Proudfoot, created in partnership with Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground production company. Thrash says that...

Sylvester Stallone and Talia Shire in Rocky (1976)
Official Trailer for 'Maybe Next Year' Doc About Eagles' 2017 Season
Sylvester Stallone and Talia Shire in Rocky (1976)
"Did you ever doubt Rocky?!" Wavelength Productions has unveiled an official trailer for a fascinating new sports documentary titled Maybe Next Year, made by Philadelphia native filmmaker Kyle Thrash. This originally premiered at the Philadelphia Film Festival last year, because of course it just had to play there. Maybe Next Year is the story of four superfans' fanatical obsession with the Philadelphia Eagles NFL football team during their incredible 2017 Super Bowl winning season. The documentary offers an intimate and nuanced view of the NFL's most notorious fanbase and casts a sympathetic light on what it means to be a "fan" of anything. But - this film isn't about the Super Bowl, it's about the religion of fandom. The poster artwork with an eagle-dog on it is awesome, I certainly need to point that out. This whole film looks damn good - definitely not just another sports doc, digging deeper into...
