- The daughter of musical comedy star Thorpe Bates and the niece of comedian Leonard Henry, this character actress made her radio début in 1936.
- Her last on screen appearance was in the penultimate episode of The Young Ones where she and her real-life husband, Brian Oulton, played Neil's parents. Ill-health forced her retirement from acting shortly after and prevented her reprising her role as Hilda Rumpole, when Rumpole Of The Bailey returned in 1987.
