Universal just released the trailer for Wicked: For Good, which will hit theaters November 21 — and Cynthia Erivo's Elphaba and Ariana Grande's Glinda are back in perfect pitch, along with Michelle Yeoh (Madame Morrible), Jeff Goldblum (the Wizard), Jonathan Bailey (Fiyero) — and a barrel of flying monkeys.

The trailer also reveals a sneak peek of Dorothy and her friends, including the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and, of course, Toto.

The film is directed by Jon M. Chu and is written by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox.

The first Wicked film, which collected $750 million at the box office, earned 10 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Lead Actress for Erivo, Supporting Actress for Grande, Costume Design, Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, Production Design, Original Score, Sound, and Visual Effects — and won for costume design and production design.

The magical world of Oz returned to the big screen in a big way at this year’s CinemaCon in Las Vegas. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande gave fans and theater owners the first sneak peek at Wicked: For Good, the sequel to last year’s hit musical film Wicked.

The new movie continues the story of Elphaba and Glinda, the two witches whose friendship and struggles are at the heart of the Wicked tale. This time, Elphaba is on the run, labeled a criminal by the Wizard, while Glinda is caught in the middle, unsure of where her loyalties lie.

The trailer showed Elphaba mastering her powers from the magical book known as the Grimmerie. She’s now a fugitive, while the Wizard (played by Jeff Goldblum) and Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh) tighten their grip on Oz. “Elphaba, they’re coming for you,” Glinda warns in a tense moment.

2024's Wicked was a major critical and commercial success. The film, which adapts the critically acclaimed Broadway stage musical of the same name, has been divided into two parts, and the second part, Wicked: For Good, is set to premiere later this year.

CinemaCon audiences have been changed for good today. During Universal’s presentation at the annual event, attendees caught their first glimpse at the second half of the story that captivated theatergoers at the very end of last year. Aptly dubbed Wicked: For Good (a nod to one of the tunes in the musical’s second act), the next and final chapter in the story sings, dances, and defies gravity on its way into cinemas on November 21. Those who are already familiar with the musical or the book on which the film is based have a good idea of what’s coming next, but there are plenty of magical moments around the corner, with the Jon M. Chu-helmed movie adding some bits and pieces that weren’t in the original story.

The Oscar-nominated duo, each donning striking all-black outfits, introduced the first-ever look at “Wicked: For Good,” which chronicles the second act of the long-running Broadway sensation. Grande and Erivo didn’t sing live as their signature characters — the perky, pink-loving Glinda and green-skinned Elphaba — but audiences got to hear their soaring takes on second act favorites like “For Good” and “No Good Deed.”

Set before, during and after the events of “The Wizard of Oz,” the musical recounts the origin story of Grande’s Glinda (later known as Glinda the Good) and Erivo’s Elphaba (eventually dubbed the Wicked Witch of the West) before Dorothy landed in Oz and sauntered down the Yellow Brick Road.

Only a month from when “Wicked” wrapped up its awards season run at the Academy Awards and seven months ahead of its release in theaters, “Wicked: For Good” is ready to bring us back down the yellow brick road. Part two of the hit Broadway musical adaptation follows heroine Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) as the people of Oz are manipulated into reviling her, and best friend Glinda (Ariana Grande) is forced to become a mouthpiece for the opposition led by Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh) and the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum).

Jon M. Chu’s Wicked Part One defied gravity in theaters Nov. 2024. The first part of the musical film adaptation competed against Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II, which arrived in theaters on the same date for a combination much like the summer of 2023’s Barbenheimer.

Those hoping to stream Wicked Part One versus seeing it in the theater may have to wait a bit before the film arrives on streaming services as it will have an exclusive theatrical run at the end of this year.

The grand finale of "Wicked" sees Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) making peace with her own passionate sense of self-worth, which causes the magical prodigy to finally soar above the Emerald City and proclaim that no amount of fear-mongering will shatter who she is. At the same time, Glinda (Ariana Grande) anxiously accepts her position as the official propaganda mouthpiece of Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh). The dual parting of ways presents a compelling cliffhanger that precedes what we already know leads to tragedy.

The framework for the Elphaba-Glinda dynamic is so front and center, however, that it almost makes you forget there's another emotional cliffhanger that's arguably just as important to the upcoming sequel "Wicked: For Good."
