All over America today, it’s No Kings Day, as the people rise up to make the kind of protests none of us thought we’d ever need to make in our lifetimes. It’s a day for defiance, for solidarity, as we watch the whole idea of a constitutional republic get dismantled piece by piece — not just by one man, but by a regime, an entire political party that no longer even pretends to have a platform, committed to the abolition of American democracy.
So what better day to blast Pavement?...

De La Soul’s Maseo and Posdnuos return to Long Island to discuss their earliest sessions with producer Prince Paul in an exclusive clip from the upcoming documentary, The Sixth Borough.
Directed by Jason Pollard, the film digs into the vibrant and influential history of hip-hop on Long Island, which is often overlooked compared to the genre’s storied, well-documented past in New York City. De La Soul are one of the prime examples, with the group forming while Maseo, Posdnous, and Trugoy the Dove (who died in 2023) were still...

A massive trove of live performances from the late-Nineties/early-Aughts glory days of music television has finally made it to the streaming era, with Paramount+ uploading old episodes of MTV Unplugged, CMT Crossroads, and VH1 Storytellers.
As Billboard notes, these collections aren’t entirely comprehensive, with random episodes and full seasons missing here and there for all three programs. Nevertheless, there’s still a deep assortment of classic performances to dig through, including most of the episodes that appeared on Rolling Stone’s list of the 15 Best Episodes of MTV Unplugged.

A Tribe Called Quest will be joined by several of their closest collaborators during their Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction on Saturday (October 19th) in Cleveland, Ohio.
The surviving members of the pioneering hip-hop group — Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and Jarobi White — will be accompanied by their Native Tongues cohort De La Soul and Queen Latifah, as well as longtime collaborator Busta Rhymes, whose feature on Tribe 1992’s “Scenario” served as a jumping off point for his career.
The Roots, whose drummer Questlove chose his name as an homage to A Tribe Called Quest, will also take the stage alongside rapper Common, who featured Q-Tip on his 1997 song, “Stolen Moments Pt. III.” Busta Rhymes associate Spliff Star is also set for the performance.

One of the unexpected benefits of the streaming era documentary boom is that no musical subject is too niche for a feature-length production budget. Film festivals have become rife with music documentaries, and this year’s Sundance alone saw films about subjects ranging from Devo and Brian Eno to Luther Vandross, Lollapalooza, and the 1985 charity single “We Are the World.” And now we have a movie about Cymande, an obscure ‘70s soul funk band whose cult of devotees has gotten noticeably louder in recent years.
The official story on Cymande is pretty brief. They formed amid London’s West Indies immigrant community in the early 1970s, released three albums from 1972–1974, came to America (where they opened for Al Green and Jerry Butler), and then called it quits when they couldn’t break through to significant media attention or radio play. Soulful jazz great Les McCann, whose work was sampled by hundreds of hip-hop artists including Notorious B.I.G. and Dr. Dre, died Friday in the Los Angeles area. He was 88.
The musician, who released more than 60 albums over the course of his career, had been admitted to a hospital from the nursing care facility he’d lived in for the past four years and was diagnosed with pneumonia, his manager Alan Abrahams told The Hollywood Reporter.
In a prolific career, he was arguably best known for his 1969 Montreaux Jazz Festival performance of the protest song “Compared to What.”
McCann joined forces with saxophonist Eddie Harris and trumpeter Benny Bailey. The three hadn’t played together before, and there wasn’t time for rehearsal, according to The New York Times.
The outlet cites the liner notes for a reissue of the concert album, the Grammy-nominated Swiss Movement, in which McCann writes: “Just before we went onstage,...

Parents just don’t understand, and they haven’t been alone in trying to make sense of Will Smith’s angry assault on Chris Rock a year and a half ago at the Oscars.
