Gorillaz kicked off their four-night residency at London’s Copper Box Arena with back-to-back shows on Friday, August 29th, and Saturday, August 30th. The band performed their 2001 self-titled debut on the first night before reprising their Demon Days live show in its entirety the following evening.

The concerts coincide with the final week of the Gorillaz’s House of Kong 25th anniversary exhibition, which began on August 8th and runs through September 3rd. As promised, the group revisited the era for each album by recreating the original live show formats and visuals from each release.

The show will take place on January 17th, 2025 at the Wu Tsai Theater in David Geffen Hall, the home of the New York Philharmonic. As of publishing, the on-sale date isn’t listed on the event page, but the suggested ticket price is $35.

Stephen Colbert hosted a live post-State of the Union episode of The Late Show this past Thursday, and it averaged the most total viewers on late night. Airing from 11:55 p.m.-12:43 a.m., the Thursday, March 7 episode averaged 1,923,000 total viewers and 200,000 P18-49 viewers, according to Nielsen live-plus-same-day data.

That’s -1% in total viewers and -4% in P18-49 viewers from last year’s post-State of the Union episode. It’s also -5% in total viewers and -24% in P18-49 viewers from the previous Thursday edition of The Late Show; up +4% in total viewers and -2% in P18-49 viewers from the Thursday Late Show average in 2024 to-date.

YouTube‘s celebration of hip-hop’s 50th birthday is bringing some rewards to artists big and small. The platform has revealed the musicians who make up the 2024 class of the Fifty Deep grant program.

The members of the Fifty Deep class will get assistance from YouTube through several initiatives. They will receive creative grants to go along with promotional support and an array of channel optimization tools. YouTube also plans to host songwriting sessions for the cohort while also providing them with A&r opportunities and early access to new products and features.

The Fifty Deep class resembles previous cohorts that participated in the #YouTubeBlack initiative, which boosted artists and creators of color in the YouTube community. YouTube has had an active presence in the Black music community since the 2018 hire of Tuma Basa, who left Spotify to become YouTube’s Director of Black Music & Culture.

Abramorama has acquired the global theatrical rights — with the exception of the U.K. and Ireland — and direct-to-consumers rights to “Getting It Back: The Story of Cymande,” the award-winning music documentary directed by Tim MacKenzie-Smith. Abramorama will launch its U.S. and Canadian theatrical release in early April, following its upcoming U.K. theatrical release.

Soulful jazz great Les McCann, whose work was sampled by hundreds of hip-hop artists including Notorious B.I.G. and Dr. Dre, died Friday in the Los Angeles area. He was 88.

The musician, who released more than 60 albums over the course of his career, had been admitted to a hospital from the nursing care facility he’d lived in for the past four years and was diagnosed with pneumonia, his manager Alan Abrahams told The Hollywood Reporter.

In a prolific career, he was arguably best known for his 1969 Montreaux Jazz Festival performance of the protest song “Compared to What.”

McCann joined forces with saxophonist Eddie Harris and trumpeter Benny Bailey. The three hadn’t played together before, and there wasn’t time for rehearsal, according to The New York Times.
