Carrie Bradshaw is a character that, no matter who you talk to, everyone will know. She was brought to life by Sarah Jessica Parker and has become a household name since Sex and the City debuted in 1998. Review: Kenneth Lonergan’s ‘You Can Count on Me’ on Criterion 4K Uhd Blu-ray
Image
The characters in writer-director Kenneth Lonergan’s films live as much with grief as within it. In You Can Count on Me, specifically, grief feels ossified within the bones of siblings Sammy (Laura Linney) and Terry (Mark Ruffalo), whose parents were killed in a car accident when they were children. It’s a tragedy whose effects Lonergan details with profound compassion and startling specificity.

Sammy and Terry would appear to have been etched as stark contrasts. The tightly wound Sammy finds meaning, solace, and stability in religion and her dull but secure job at a local bank in the town in which she grew up. By contrast, Terry drifts around the country, unmoored from family and community, the cruelties of life are clearly ever-present in his mind.

But Lonergan isn’t content to present these siblings as mere polar opposites. After Terry arrives in town for a visit, initially only...

For Those About to Slash, We Salute You: 14 Military Horrors to Stream for Memorial Day
Image
War films are horror films, aren’t they? Both genres explore inevitable death intertwined with moral quandaries and are full of suspense. Come and See is often hailed as one of the scariest films and Son of Saul almost plays like a found footage in Auschwitz.

There is a thin line between the two, but military horror goes further by blending the literal and figurative. This hybrid subgenre repeatedly uses the zombie as the antagonist of choice, a reason identified by Scholar Kevin Wetmore in Post-9/11 Horror in American Cinema: “Zombies cannot be reasoned with, cannot be negotiated with, they seek only to replicate themselves, which also makes them an excellent metaphor for terrorists.”

That said, in recognition of Memorial Day here are 14 military horrors to choose from that aren’t all just about the undead. The POVs range from civilians trapped in military culture, teen cadets, facing barriers as...

Kevin Kline Returns to Comedy with 'American Classic'
Image
The voice of Kevin Kline has been pleasantly popping up from time to time on the animated comedy show Bob's Burgers for nearly 15 years. His distinct (and distinguished) voice is perfect for his rich and elitist landlord character, Mr. Fischoeder, and he always brings a chuckle. But in the live-action scene, Kline has mostly been a dramatic force, especially in the recent series, Disclaimer. Of course, the Oscar winner has given great dramatic performances ever since 1982's Sophie's Choice, but it's always a treat when he busts his comedy chops in live-action. On that note, MGM+ announced today an eight-episode series order for American Classic, a half-hour comedy series starring none other than Kevin Kline.

American Classic comes from co-creators Michael Hoffman and Bob Martin. The series, which will debut with eight episodes, comes from Fifth Season as the studio with Mar-Key Pictures, Likely Story, and Anonymous Content producing. Kevin...

10 Best '90s Fantasy & Adventure Movies
Image
Since the days of cinema classics like Ben-Hur, fantasy movies have set the benchmark for quality, high-budget entertainment, as can be seen in iconic franchises like The Lord of the Rings. From focusing on heroes embarking on epic quests to reimaginings of beloved fairy tales, the 1990s gave audiences some of the most enjoyable entries in the genre, though with an emphasis on smaller budgets, comedy, and animation.

The 1990s saw something of a slump in fantasy cinema, as the '80s had no shortage of campy flops in the genre, but still remains a great decade for family-oriented adventure. From worlds populated by knights and dragons to reboots of classic Universal Monsters, the decade is practically synonymous with adventure. With many of these movies still household names for fantasy fans, it's worth remembering some of the best the '90s had to offer.

Kurt Russell's Tombstone Had To Follow A Strict Mustache Rule
Image
If you've seen 1993's "Tombstone," you know that it contains one of the greatest visual effects ever seen in a Western. No, it's not the movie's explosive gunfights, nor is it the shots featuring teams of horses being ridden over precarious terrain. Instead, it's the fabulously outlandish, hirsute, and downright masculine mustaches that almost every single male actor in the movie sports. "Tombstone" is a movie about capital-d Dudes, and the actors' mustache game is so strong that it has the power to change lives. Take me, for instance; I was primarily a Beard Guy for many years, but upon revisiting "Tombstone" over the holiday season of 2023, I made the decision to become a Mustache Man, and I've yet to look back.

It just so happens that the power and influence of the mustaches in "Tombstone" was 100% intentional. No incidental or idle hair and makeup styling was happening on that set,...

1 Of The Mustaches In Tombstone Shows The True Genius Of Kurt Russell & Val Kilmer's Western Movie (& It's Not The Most Notorious One)
Image
Released in 1993, Kurt Russell's Tombstone has long-since passed into legend as one of the defining Westerns released after the supposed decline of the genre. Financially successful, but not to the degree that it broke into the year's box office top 10, and critically appreciated, but not exactly adored at the time, the entertaining look at some of the key events in Wyatt Earp's life stands shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the most famous examples of Westerns.

In the three decades since its release, appreciation for Tombstone's cast has grown the most, not least because of stand-out performances by Kurt Russell (as Wyatt Earp), Val Kilmer (in his career-high role of Doc Hollywood), and Michael Biehn (Johnny Ringo), but also because of the numerous early performances by incredibly talented actors who would go on to far bigger things. As Roger Ebert said, Russell and Kilmer were so good that their performances became almost ubiquitous,...

10 Best Comic Book Movies Inspired by Pulp Classics
Image
The most influential movies today are based on superhero comics. However, before the era of caped and costumed heroes, there was the age of pulp magazines. Popular until the 1950s, these magazines featured a wide range of heroes, from adventurers to noir detectives to horror protagonists. Pulp heroes were, in many ways, the precursors to modern superheroes.

After the success of Tim Burton’s Batman, an influx of pulp-inspired movies emerged in the 1990s. This era appealed to an older generation nostalgic for simpler heroes, while also embracing the stylish aesthetics of the 1930s and 1940s. Pulp-inspired movies were simpler, less flashy, and often cheesier than today’s superhero blockbusters, yet they retained a unique charm.

Albert Ray
The Twisty, Genre-Blending Mysteries of ‘I See You’ [Horror Queers Podcast]
Albert Ray
Broooomhn.

November wound up covering a lot of ground. We dipped a toe into pre-Code territory with Albert Ray’s 1932 title The Thirteenth Guest (listen), stayed at “Aaron’s” cabin in Creep 2 (listen), and got our hair done with Jill Gevargizian’s 2020 film The Stylist (listen).

Now we’re talking about gay screenwriter Devon Graye and director Adam Randall‘s under seen and under rated thriller I See You (2019).

In the film, police detective Greg (Jon Tenney) is struggling with his wife Jackie (Helen Hunt)’s infidelity as he works a new case with partner Spitzky (Gregory Alan Williams). The case is a child abduction that bears a striking similarity to events from 15 years ago. As Greg and Jackie’s teenage son Conor (Judah Lewis) blames his mother, strange events begin occurring around the house.

Meanwhile, a pair of troubled teens – Mindy (Libe Barer) and Alec (Owen Teague) – take refuge in a house,...

Only 1 Tombstone Actor Didn't Grow A Real Mustache For The 1993 Western Movie
Image
\The classic American Western film might have peaked in popularity with 1993's Tombstone, thanks to its potent combination of Doc Holliday one-liners, pitch-perfect Old West action, and gloriously mustachioed cast. Each member of Tombstone's star-studded cast was integral in bringing the story, which was a glamorized and somewhat exaggerated version of the real historical event known as the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. At the time of its release, neither the box office nor the critical reception for Tombstone were noteworthy, but its popularity has grown significantly over time thanks to its lasting entertainment value.

As entertaining as the performances in Tombstone are, the actors' commitment to bringing their real historical counterpart to life on the silver screen from a visual perspective is part of why the movie has become so beloved. While historical accuracy is often eschewed in favor of cinematic machismo and verbal sparring when it comes to the narrative,...

Cruel Intentions Stars Jon Tenney & Claire Forlani On Season 1's Parental Schemes
Image
Prime Video's TV reboot of Cruel Intentions follows the students of Manchester College, an elite academy populated by manipulators, sociopaths, and their unwitting victims. Based on the cult classic 1999 film of the same name, as well as the original 1782 novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Cruel Intentions uses humor and its sharp satirical edge to cut through to the heart of its characters, users who don't care how many lives they ruin in their petty pursuit of political power.

Most of the Cruel Intentions cast are hot college students, but exceptions include Jon Tenney and Claire Forlani, who star as hot middle-aged parents. Tenney plays Congressman Russell, the father of Scott Russell (Khobe Clarke), while Forlani plays Claudia, the mother of Caroline (Sarah Catherine Hook) and stepmother to Lucien (Zac Burgess). While ostensibly the adults in the room, that doesn't necessarily mean they're more evolved than their children.

Cruel Intentions Stars Khobe Clarke & John Kim On Shipping Scott And Blaise In Prime Video's Remake
Image
Prime Video's Cruel Intentions follows the students of Manchester College, a prestigious school that turns young aristocrats into the future leaders of America, whether they're qualified or not. In this cutthroat academy, students are either manipulative sociopaths, their hapless pawns, or their unfortunate victims. The series is based on the 1999 film of the same name, as well as the original source material, the 1782 novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses.

Two of the more sympathetic students in the new Cruel Intentions story are Scott and Blaise, played by Khobe Clarke and John Kim, respectively. Scott is a good-natured but helplessly naive student who becomes president of the frat house through no effort of his own, while Blaise acts as his handler, ostensibly serving as Scott's right-hand man while manipulating him to his own ends.

Cruel Intentions TV Review: Prime Video’s remake is pretty awful
Image
Plot: Follows the elite students of Manchester College, a Washington, D.C.-adjacent university, where reputation means everything, fraternities and sororities are the gold standard, and two ruthless step-siblings, Caroline Merteuil and Lucien Belmont, will do anything to stay on top of the cutthroat social hierarchy. After a brutal hazing incident threatens the entire Greek Life system, they’ll do whatever is necessary to preserve their power and reputation – even if that means seducing Annie Grover, the daughter of the Vice President of the United States. Hearts will be broken, loyalties will be tested, and secrets will be revealed in this modern-day royal court that is Manchester College.

This Western Movie Classic Has One of the Best Final Showdowns Ever
Image
Few modern Western films have the timeless allure of George P. Cosmatos 1993 classic, Tombstone. The beloved box office darling was originally positioned as a rival to another Western released 6 months later Wyatt Earp but after Tombstone's successful release, which saw Tombstone rake in almost $50 million more than Wyatt Earp, it was clear that Cosmatos' film was the definitive Western flick of the 1990s. Despite some initial lackluster critical reviews, audiences adored the two-hour romp through the American West.

But what makes Tombstone so iconic? Obviously, the beloved fim is primarily supported by its outstanding cast. Kurt Russell perfectly captures the mysterious allure of Wyatt Earp, and Val Kilmers portrayal of Doc Holliday is incomparable. Every part of Tombstone is specifically designed to immerse the audience in its setting. However, the films climactic shootout is ultimately its most impressive crowning achievement.

Image
Eddie Murphy reflects on why Beverly Hills Cop 3 flopped, citing missing characters and low stakes. Omission of key characters and clichs contributed to the failure of Beverly Hills Cop 3. Murphy hopes to redeem the franchise with Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F and potentially a fifth film.

Eddie Murphy is set to return as Axel Foley in Netflixs Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F which hits the streamer on July 3, 2024, but before that, the 63-year-old star recently took time to reflect on why Beverly Hills Cop 3 didnt connect with audiences. Released on May 25, 1994, the third outing in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise was a critical failure for a number of reasons, only managing to take in $119 million at the box office against a budget of $70 million. Its widely regarded as the worst entry in the series thus far, and currently holds only an 11% rating on Rotten Tomatoes among critics.

Breaking Bad Star Reminisces About Beverly Hills Cop Role, Dishes on Sequels
