Biography

    • A graduate of the Notre Dame academy at Roxbury, Massachusetts, Ethel began her career as a classical dancer working under the direction of Belasco and the Shuberts. She began her career on the stage at two years of age, later being going to New York to pursue a career on the stage. On Broadway she appeared in "The Lily" with Julia Dean, "The Only Son," "Search Me" with Montagu Love and "Honor Be Damned!" with William Courtleigh. Ethel made her screen debut in 1914 and went on to play roles as society women. Although in 1922 she did play the role of Calamity Jane opposite William S. Hart and it was around this time, her career started to slip. She died from an illness she'd suffered for over a year.

Ethel Grey Terry died yesterday at her home here after a long illness. Miss Terry, born in Oakland, Cal., was on the stage and screen for twenty years. After being graduated from the Notre dame Academy at Roxbury, Mass., she began her career as a classical dancer. She was the daughter of Lillian Lawrence, a famous actress. Miss Terry was for two years a featured actress in David Belasco productions on Broadway, the best known of which was "The Lily." Later she played for the Shuberts. At one time she had a stock company of her own at Schenectady, N. Y. Appearing in motion pictures for the first time in 1919, Miss Terry had parts in several pictures in which the late Lon Chaney starred. Her best known screen appearances were in "Intolerance," "Peg o' My Heart," and "Object Alimony." Miss Terry is survived by her husband, Carl Gerard, an actor to whom she was married in 1910. Funeral services will be held here tomorrow. (New York Evening Post, 7 January 1931)
