Last year it was announced that an updated version of the classic football series Friday Night Lights was coming to Peacock, but there's been little word on the project since then. Developed by Peter Berg, who based the series on his own hit movie, we now have an update from the creator himself, and for fans worried that it might just be a rehash of what came before, it's nothing but good news.
Speaking with Esquire about a number of topics, Berg's 2004 film and subsequent TV series were brought up. Inspired by the 1990 novel by H. G. Bissinger, Friday Night Lights became must-see TV back in the mid to late 2000s, as viewers couldn't get enough of coach Eric Taylor and his Dillon Panthers. Lasting for five seasons, the series is still remembered fondly today, which is why people were cautious when they heard about the new version coming to Peacock.

Can you imagine Friday Night Lights without Connie Britton?!
The 58-year-old actress starred as Tami Taylor, the wife of Kyle Chandler‘s Coach Eric Taylor, in the beloved series that ran for five seasons from 2006 to 2011.
In a new interview, Connie admitted she almost walked away from the role after her small role in the 2004 Friday Night Lights movie.
Keep reading to find out more…“In the film there was very little for me to do, even less so by the time it came out,” Connie told Parade. “Whatever I had done was mostly on the cutting room floor. When the TV show came around I said, ‘No thank you.’”
After appearing in the movie, Connie said that she wanted more than just “playing the fly-on-the-wall wife character in a football show.”

Television dramas have been an important part of the average American's media diet for the last few decades, with people gathering around the television to catch the latest episode of their favorite shows every week. Television dramas exploded in the late-1990s when prestige television networks like HBO started producing high-quality programming to compete with feature films.
The crowning jewel of HBO's initial line-up, which included excellent series like Oz and Sex and the City, was undoubtedly The Sopranos, which is still considered the greatest television drama of all time. The few series that come close to the quality of The Sopranos are the ones that push the boundaries of serialized television, and brought audiences nuanced and complicated stories.

A star of Friday Night Lights addresses their potential return in the reboot series, and reveals that they almost turned the original show down. Inspired by the 1990 novel and 2004 movie adaptation of the same name, the Friday Night Lights TV series was developed by Peter Berg, and debuted on NBC in October 2006. The show was a success, running five seasons and 76 episodes, and Friday Night Lights boasted an all-star cast, including Kyle Chandler, Michael B. Jordan, and Taylor Kitsch. But another star has opened up on their views on the upcoming remake.
Per Parade, Connie Britton, who starred as Tami Taylor, high school faculty member and wife of coach Eric Taylor, in both the show and the original movie, said the new series isn't really on her radar. She also mentioned how she almost turned down her role in the show due to her part in the movie being so small.

One of Netflix's biggest hit original series in recent years is "Outer Banks," which premiered in 2020 and ran for five seasons. Set in the scenic beach towns of North Carolina, the series blended coming-of-age drama, along with romance and action, elevated by its young, charismatic main cast. "Outer Banks" reinvigorated teen dramas and thrillers, but the genre has been a television staple for decades. With that in mind, there are countless shows like "Outer Banks" for fans looking to find the series' effective soap operatic stakes elsewhere.
From shows set in other picturesque locations around the country or featuring cool, stylish characters in a cycle of love and betrayal, there are plenty of teen dramas to watch. What links these series are young, impossibly beautiful main characters, often thrust into melodramatic storylines that grow increasingly ludicrous. For fans of the genre, they wouldn't have these teen and young adult shows any other way.

“Cobra Kai” might be officially wrapped up but there are plenty of other shows that can scratch that lingering itch.
When the “Karate Kid” sequel series was at it’s best it was a bingeable mix of ’80s nostalgia, sports drama, and high school melodrama that balanced comedy with more serious moments. Luckily there are a number of other great – and equally bingeable – shows out there.

On SiriusXM 109’s podcast, Stars, Kitsch revealed that he had been asked to come back on board for the new Friday Night Lights series, but he seems not to have accepted anything at this time. Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose! Those are the words of Coach Eric Taylor from Friday Night Lights, the successful coming-of-age football drama that ran for five seasons in the late 2000s, and is now being rebooted for Peacock. While it's unclear at this point if any of the original cast members will be returning, we know at least one person has been asked: Taylor Kitsch. However, don't look for Tim Riggins to show up on a regular basis, as that's not what the star of Netflix's American Primeval is looking for right now.
Appearing on SiriusXM’s The Spotlight with Jessica Shaw (seen below), Kitsch mentioned that he's "been asked" about the possibility of returning for the Friday Night Lights reboot. The series is said to not be a direct sequel to the original, but rather a new story set in the same universe, which means Kitsch's character...

Peacock is planning a reboot of Friday Night Lights, but do we need a new version of the acclaimed show?
Reboots are all the rage in Hollywood; everyone knows that. TV shows just can't get enough as we've got Dexter: Original Sin, a new version of Suits, and more in the works. So it's not too shocking that Peacock has announced plans for a new take on Friday Night Lights.
Per TV Line, the project comes from the original shows' executive producers Jason Katims, Peter Berg, and Brian Grazer. The show is intended to be a true reboot of the original series with new characters and perhaps setting, with the logline hinting it's a tale of how the football team helps a small Texas town deal with tragedy.

Friday Night Lights is getting the reboot treatment, and Deadline reports that Peacock has scooped up the project after a competitive bidding war with Netflix.

Friday Night Lights could be the next series rebooted.
A new iteration of the football drama is in the works at Universal Television with Jason Katims, Pete Berg and Brian Grazer, Deadline has confirmed.
It’s believed to be a new story, still set in the world of high school football, with new characters rather than the previous cast, which featured Kyle Chandler, Connie Britton, Taylor Kitsch and Jesse Plemons.
The project is in the early stages but has been taken out to market.
A reboot of Friday Night Lights, either as a series or as a movie, has been long talked about since it ended after five seasons.
The series, which was based on a book by H.G. Bissinger and a 2004 film, was set in the fictional town of Dillon in rural West Texas. It followed a high school football team, coached by Chandler’s Eric Taylor. Britton played his wife.

Friday Night Lights followed the exploits of a high school football team in Texas, using the sports drama format to cover a wide range of social issues including poverty, racism, and drug addiction. The story was based on H. G. Bissinger's book, Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream, and it was created by the director of the 2004 film.
The show received wide critical acclaim, including being honored by the American Film Institute three times, winning two Primetime Emmy Awards and one Creative Arts Emmy Award, and many nominations from organizations such as the NAACP Image Awards and the Television Critics Association Awards.

A top-rated TV show in the eyes of IMDb reviewers, Friday Night Lights remains one of the greatest TV sports dramas of its time. The series won just three Emmys and over 100 total award nominations during its five-season run. Created by Peter Berg, Fnl follows the tumultuous seasons of a high school football team from a small fictional Texas town called Dillon. Led by Kyle Chandler as Coach Eric Taylor and Connie Britton as his wife, Tami, the series follows the evolution of the players as their lives change for the better or worse and where the game of football impacts them the most.

Friday Night Lights ended with an unconventional, ambiguous finish, reflecting the show's realistic portrayal of small-town football and relationships. Season 5 wrapped up character arcs while leaving room for interpretation, like the merger of East Dillon and Dillon Panthers programs. Coach and Tami Taylor's bittersweet move to Philadelphia symbolized their enduring partnership and individual growth outside of Texas football.
The Friday Night Lights ending brought the beloved drama show to a close but left some plot elements ambiguous. As was typical with Friday Night Lights, the series steered away from a conventional feel-good narrative resolution while still giving its cast a fitting send-off. Season 5 saw Coach Eric Taylor back in charge of the East Dillon Lions, based in the underdeveloped east side of the town. After struggling during Coach Taylor's first season in charge, East Dillon became a powerhouse, making it to the Texas State Championship game.

Since The CW revamped its schedule, the football drama All American remains one of the last originals.
Since its spinoff, All American: Homecoming, was also renewed and is scheduled to air sometime in the summer of 2024, it’s not overall surprising they want to capitalize on both.
It’s not uncommon for a TV to expand its universe into spinoffs. Most often, procedural-type franchises such as CSI, Law & Order, and the One Chicago Universe have done it.
However, we’ve seen teen shows do it successfully, including The Vampire Diaries universe on The CW and The Fosters transitioning into Good Trouble on Freeform.
All American and All American: Homecoming are succeeding the way they are. Do we need additional spinoffs?
What is All American About?
All American was inspired by the life of professional football player Spencer Paysinger. Daniel Ezra portrays the fictional lead role of Spencer James.

The power of a great dynamic between characters is one of the key factors that pulls viewers into television shows and keeps them engaged. Iconic duos, such as SpongeBob & Patrick, Eric & Tami Taylor, and Troy & Abed, offer a perfect match of characters that support and elevate each other, creating memorable on-screen bonds. Whether it's a platonic or romantic pairing, audiences crave the kind of kinship seen in iconic television duos, where characters authentically grow together, drift apart, and find each other again.

There are a few television shows from the '90s, 2000s, and 2010s that have become so iconic they've cemented themselves as modern classic TV shows, and if one hasn't viewed them already, then one is sorely missing out. Before the advent of streaming services, audiences were forced to catch up with their favorite TV show casts once a week and cling to the pre-episode recap to better remember the full arc. Viewers would go to their local stores in droves to pick up season box sets of the best-written current TV shows to rewatch their favorite episodes, as there was no option to scroll through seasons and begin a binge.
When streaming started to corner the market, all of that changed, and audiences could enjoy the widest variety of new content possible. However, many were also excited by the prospect of revisiting series that have become modern classics of the era,...

In July 2022, Taylor Kitsch told Variety that he wouldn't reprise his role of Tim Riggins if there was ever another Friday Night Lights show. The actor said, "I’m done. I’m good. I want to keep growing as an actor. Going back to Rigs — let him live in everyone else’s memories. Whatever that is, whatever he means to them, let him lay there.”
A revival or reboot would likely be just as emotional and moving as the original series, as the main characters help each other through the joys and pains of high school football. Whether Coach Taylor is giving his clever and necessary pep talks or Tim Riggins shares his love for his hometown, there are many memorable motivational quotes in Friday Night Lights.

This week’s question:Who’s your favorite TV father? Why? (Characters from current and old shows are fair game.)
Eric Deggans (@deggans), NPR
I wrote a piece for NPR a few years ago about how most of what I learned about being a dad, I soaked up from TV. My own father is gone now; we reconciled when I was older, but when I was a kid, he wasn’t around as much as I wanted. I never lived with a father in the house, so I knew nothing about what it was like. For a long while, I thought most married couples were like Rob and Laura Petrie in “The Dick Van Dyke Show”; sleeping in two twin beds separated by a nightstand. So when I saw John Amos as James Evans Sr.

It's a miracle the parenting book industry survived after Tami Taylor came along. This Friday Night Lights matriarch has dispensed every possible piece of advice and inspiration for teens and their parents. The critically acclaimed TV series may center around high school football, but it's about so much more than that. Whenever people ask me what TV show is the best currently running, my go-to answer is “The Americans” for a variety of reasons (it’s really that good, it’s one most people haven’t seen, etc.). The team that brought you unauthorized musical productions of The O.C. and Cruel Intentions is taking on another one of your nostalgic favorites: Friday Night Lights, which also happens to be the winner of Vulture's High School TV Showdown. Better yet, the man set to play Coach Eric Taylor is someone intimately familiar with the show: Scott Porter, who played paraplegic football star Jason Street on Fnl. To celebrate the occasion, Porter dropped this Dubsmash:The musical will debut in Los Angeles sometime next year. Until then: Clear eyes, full lungs, can't lose!

Let's all sing it together: Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose. Especially when someone is making a "Friday Night Lights" musical.
"The Unauthorized Friday Night Lights Musical" is set to premiere in late spring or early summer in Los Angeles, and comes from Jordan Ross and Lindsey Rosin, the same people behind musical versions of "The O.C." and "Cruel Intentions." The latter got so much buzz that Ross and Rosin landed a deal at NBC to develop a "Cruel Intentions" sequel for television.
The original "Friday Night Lights" ran for five seasons, first on NBC and then on DirecTV, and starred Kyle Chandler as Coach Eric Taylor and Connie Britton as his wife, Tami Taylor. While the show was lowly-rated on air, it's become a beloved classic thanks to streaming services. And it helped launch the careers of many of its young cast members.

The Phantom of the Opera
Written by John Jacoby, Samuel Hofffenstein, Eric Taylor
Directed by Arthur Lubin
U.S.A., 1943
It comes as a surprise to no one when stating that Hollywood is not averse to remaking movies. It is an old practice that goes back many decades, all the way back to the earliest days of the studio system. Great stories, apparently, bear retelling with more modern casts and more modern filmmaking techniques. In some cases, it is an issue of actually modernizing the setting, whereas in others instances the studio believes that audiences crave a new version of a familiar classic even though it was a period piece to begin with. Among several early attempts at refurbishing highly regarded motion pictures was 1943’s Phantom of the Opera, released not quite 20 years after the terrifying original and about 15 years after said original was itself the subject of tinkering to...
