10 Long Anime That'll Take You Years to Finish
Image
Many of the longest television series ever made are anime. Despite the average anime only lasting 12–13 episodes, there are others with hundreds, or even thousands, of episodes. These beefy anime series are popular battle shonen anime, like One Piece and Naruto, anime targeted towards little kids, like Doraemon, or both.

There are countless great anime that are less than 30 episodes, but sometimes it's nice to spend years watching a series with well over 300 episodes. In certain cases, an individual anime that may not be particularly long on its own compensates with several sequel series. Whether someone is a fan of action, comedy, romance, or any other genre, there's likely a long-running anime catering to their tastes.

10 Signs an Anime Has Outstayed Its Welcome & Is About to End Badly
Image
With the widespread popularity of anime series on the rise, many new stories brimming with dynamic characters and imaginative worlds debut every day. However, not all anime series recognize when to bow out gracefully. Some anime, whether motivated by commercial success or wish to increase their popularity, continue on well past their prime, outstaying their welcome and setting the conclusion up to end poorly.

A few signposts exist as red flags to warn audiences the anime will most likely end on a satisfactory note. From excessive filler episodes to poorly integrated new characters, these signs highlight the common pitfalls an anime series could fall into if it flirts with the idea of continuing on past its welcome.

Excessive Filler Episodes Detract From the Main Story Example Anime: Naruto

10 Best Anime That Were Airing The Same Time As Dragon Ball & Dbz
Image
Few anime franchises (if any) are more iconic than Akira Toriyama's flagship series, Dragon Ball. The beloved shonen manga debuted all the way back in 1984, and by the end of the decade, it had spawned two of the most popular anime adaptations — Dragon Ball & Dragon Ball Z — of all time.

From 1986 to 1996, Dragon Ball & Dragon Ball Z aired on Fuji TV, and by the end of the 20th century, the adventures of Son Goku had spread their roots around the world. However, Dragon Ball was far from the only notable series that came out during this 10-year window; in fact, there were many iconic series that aired during the same window as Akira Toriyama's seminal work.

10 Best Fantasy Movies Without Any Sequels
Image
While everyone loves a good fantasy film series or franchise, there's no question that Hollywood movies have become more and more reliant on the idea of sequels in recent years. Massive franchises like Harry Potter and Pirates of the Caribbean dominate box offices to the point that out of the 10 highest-grossing fantasy films of all time, every single one is either part of a film series or a remake of an older movie.

That isn't to say that sequels are bad, but there is a certain power to a movie that doesn't need a sequel. Fantasy films that stand alone and tell complete stories can be far more satisfying to watch than ones that are clearly putting far more energy into establishing franchise potential than into crafting a compelling narrative. And, of course, there are fads like Disney's avalanche of 90s direct-to-video sequels, with their shoestring budgets and disappointingly outsourced animation.

“We won the trust of their companies”: Naruto, One Piece and Pokémon Voice Actors Deserve Special Credit for Paving the Way for Women in Anime

Despite such glory, the industry tends to get overshadowed by a glaring issue surrounding its female voice actors in particular. It is quite ironic for the industry to showcase strong and empowered voices, as voice actors tend to have a different reality to see for themselves as compared to their male colleagues.

However, these archetypes and limitations of some women in the industry have become synonymous with the iconic characters that they have voiced. Their talent and service to the industry have been so commendable that even Crunchyroll’s Vice President has become vocal about their contribution.

Film Review: Summer Vacation 1999 (1988) by Shusuke Kaneko
Image
Famous for its surreal genre-mashing and cross-gender casting, “Summer Vacation 1999”'s (1988) cultish elements recall the beginnings of shonen-ai (boy's love), one of many queercoded creative spaces that have been veiled for heterosexual enjoyment. Before our time of identity politics and labels, representations of gender and sexual fluidity wove itself into existence by sheer will and unquenchable desire. Today, in the restored catalogs of festivals such as Queer East, we look back in celebration, but also with a mixed sense of wonder, empathy and relief. In Shusuke Kaneko's futurist romantic-mystery, three boys reel from the return of their supposed-dead schoolmate to their countryside boarding school, igniting tensions and unrequited desires. “Summer Vacation 1999” breathes life into a depiction of queer spaces as innocent, fleeting and beautiful, forever scarred into memory.

The Animated Movie That Got Magic Right Before Harry Potter
Image
Harry Potter's Wizarding World has helped define the realms of magic and sorcery for an entire generation of filmgoers and wannabe warlocks. The adventures of young Daniel Radcliffe as “the boy who lived” and his classmates at Hogwarts aimed to balance the dramas of blossoming adolescence and academic trials of witchcraft with epic sagas of wizardry warfare. Whether they were a member of Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw, the average student of Hogwarts had to juggle facing final exams and threats of expulsion while facing off against Death Eaters and the life-threatening evil forces of Voldemort. Despite the boy wizard’s blockbuster films making a global splash in the way audiences discovered the educational creed of magic, the best film to be made about learning witchcraft far predates J.K. Rowling’s Hogwarts hero. Released in Japan in 1989 – an excellent year for animation – by Studio Ghibli, famed director Hayao Miyazaki's...

Anime Review: Whisper of the Heart (1995) by Yoshifumi Kondo
Image
“Whisper of the Heart”, the favorite, coming-of-age Studio Ghibli film, was released in the distant 1995. Based on the homotitled manga by Aoi Hiiragi, it stands as the first movie of the Japanese Dream Factory that is not directed by Hayao Miyazaki or Isao Takahata. Behind its success lies Yoshifumi Kondo, the director who worked on plenty of masterpieces, such as “Princess Mononoke“, “Grave of the Fireflies”, and “Kiki’s Delivery Service“. By examining the difficult path that leads one to discover who he truly wants to be, by narrating the stressful and clumsy process of entering adulthood and personal maturation, it unfolds a world full of realism, imagination, and strong emotions. But, let’s take a closer look!

The story revolves around Shizuku Tsukishima, a teenage girl who is in the last grade of high school, and, instead of studying for her exams, prefers to read literary books and …follow stray cats.

Film Review: Detective Conan: The Fist of the Blue Sapphire (2019) by Tomoka Nagaoka
Image
For someone who has not watched much Detective Conan, I was admittedly a little nervous to watch Tms/V1 Studio’s newest “Detective Conan: The Fist of the Blue Sapphire.” From newcomer to newcomer, however, I assure you; do not be afraid. The film reeks of one typical 2000s trope after another. Released in 2019 in the same debut month as “Detective Pikachu,” the film is just one addition to a serial phenomenon of remaking 90s classics, though this one admittedly sticks more to its 2D guns than its Pokemon counterpart does.

“Detective Conan: The Fist of the Blue Sapphire” is screening at Toronto Japanese Film Festival

“Detective Conan – The Fist of the Blue Sapphire” kicks off with the dramatic murder of brilliant lawyer Shirley Tan by Marina Bay Sands. Detective Conan (Minami Takayama) and his crew, inadvertently get involved after they fly to Singapore to support Sonoko Suzuki’s boyfriend,...
