Exclusive: Mel Brooks and a storied group of animation creatives are combining on a short about the creator’s experience overcoming depression, with sales launching at MIPCOM.

Brooks and Spencer Grammer (Rick and Morty) will lead the voice cast of Enormous, which is inspired by Stephen Kramer Glickman’s personal journey battling depression with the help of his dog’s love. Airing next summer, the film follows Stephen, a man devastated after a breakup with his girlfriend, as he sinks into depression with only his pug, Jelly Donut, to keep him company in his empty house. In a story twist, Jelly Donut finds an unexpected way to help him rediscover joy and begin to care for himself again.

Brooks’ upcoming projects include fantasy animation The Land of Sometimes opposite Ewan McGregor and Helena Bonham Carter, while Judd Apatow is making a documentary series about the 98-year-old for HBO.

Going by the trailers alone, Storks might look like a bit of an anachronism in 2016, taking its comedic kick start from the folkloric image of the white stork delivering babies to expectant parents that was popularised by Hans Christian Anderson and latterly in Disney's Dumbo. Happily, writer and co-director Nicholas Stoller has thought this through more than we have.

In Warner Animation Group's second feature, storks delivered infants from their baby factory on Stork Mountain in the past, but a pioneering boss has changed all of that, “because there are lots of other ways to get a baby.” Now the mountain is crowned with a great big warehouse from which Amazon-a-like online retailer Cornerstore.com dispatches electrical goods and other doo-dads so that storks don't have to deal with the hassle of carrying newborns any more.

Earlier this week, we predicted that it would be a close race between the two new box office newcomer this weekend, Sony's The Magnificent Seven and Warner Bros.' Storks, but that didn't exactly happen. The Magnificent Seven easily took the box office crown this weekend with an estimated $35 million, with Storks debuting in second place with $21.8 million. Both new releases were critical hits as well, before performing well at the box office.

Box Office Mojo reports that The Magnificent Seven, the Western remake starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt, pulled in an impressive $9,526 per-screen average from 3,674 theaters, along with a solid 63% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The remake was produced with a $90 million budget, but no international box office data has been released quite yet. Chicago – I’ve waited all week to write that headline, and I will be joining the 100,000 other similar headlines out there. Hey-ooh! “Storks” is a lot of fun, without the dire need for any “message” or heavy handedness that is too familiar in the current animation environment. It’s just funny.

Much of the credit has to go to writer/co-director Nicholas Stoller (“Get Him to the Greek”), doing his first animated film. He has a light touch with comedy, pressing the accelerator when he needs to, but also getting laughs from wacky dialogue and strange asides. Staying close to the roots of the story (storks no longer deliver babies, but packages), and employing a great voice cast, combined for “Storks” to join “Sausage Factory” as the funniest full-length cartoon of the year.

Occasionally, a sociological Mickey gets slipped into these filmic equivalents of fizzy drinks; seriously, who'd have thought that Zootopia would double as one...

The line-up for this year’s Alice In The City (Alice nella Citta) – the sidebar dedicated to younger generations at Rome Film Festival (Oct 13-23) – has been revealed.

Now in its 14th edition, the event will present a total of 42 titles across five programmes.

The Competition Young/Adult programme will screen films including Matt Ross’s Captain Fantastic, which premiered in Cannes, Taika Waitit’s Hunt For The Wilderpeople, New Zealand’s highest-grossing local film, and Travis Knight’s Kubo And The Two Strings. A 27-strong jury aged 14-18 will select a winner from the 12-strong line-up.

Storks takes the old myth of storks delivering babies as a starting point for an animated action/adventure comedy, where the storks have gone corporate and gotten out of the baby delivery business. Now, storks deliver merchandise for Cornerstore.com, a giant Amazon-like internet retailer, because now there are so many options if you want a baby. Or at least they thought they were out of the baby business, until a little boy uses an old form to place an order for a baby brother- an order that would never have been filled except for a glitch in the system that activates the long-shuttered Baby Factory.

A baby is in no way part of the company’s new business model, so an ambitious, efficient stork named Junior (Andy Samberg), who is in line to become the next CEO, has to deal with the problem – and quickly, before his boss Hunter...

“Storks,” the brainchild of the new Warner Animation Group screenwriting “think tank,” stretches the Looney Tunes ethos for CG in terms of both comedy and animation style.

First-time animation director Nicholas Stoller (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall”), who wrote the script, teamed up with another directorial newbie, former Pixar animator Doug Sweetland (the “Presto” short), and they paid tribute to the Coen brothers’ “Raising Arizona,” a live-action Looney Tune of sorts.

Storks now deliver packages instead of babies for retail giant, Cornerstore.com, run by the greedy Hunter (Kelsey Grammer). That is, until Junior (Andy Stamberg) and human sidekick Tulip (Katie Crown) inadvertently unleash the long-dormant Baby Machine. They’re forced to deliver an adorable girl to her family, while warding off a Wolf Pack that’s also fallen in love with the baby.

This Past Weekend:

Yikes. What a terrible weekend we just had, not only for the new movies released but also for the Weekend Warrior’s predictions. Clint Eastwood and Tom Hanks’ Sully won its second weekend in a row with just under $22 million, but as far as the new movies, neither Lionsgate’s Blair Witch nor Universal’s Bridget Jones’s Baby did very well, putting the last nail in the coffin (hopefully) for sequels/remakes trying to play upon nostalgia that just isn’t there. (Good luck to the Rings movie opening next month!) Blair Witch ended up with $9.6 million to take second place and both Bridget Jones’s Baby and Oliver Stone’s Snowden ended up with around $8 million, so...

Warner Bros. has officially ventured back into the world of animated features with “Storks,” their first big animated film since the hugely successful “Lego Movie” in 2014. The film, directed by Nicholas Stoller (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall”) and veteran animator Doug Sweetland (“Toy Story,” “The Incredibles,” etc.), boasts an ensemble cast including Andy Samberg, Kelsey Grammar and Jennifer Aniston. Reviews are starting to fly in, and so far, consensus is mixed.

IndieWire’s own Eric Kohn gave the film a grade of a C, writing in his review that it’s “neither wacky enough to work as pure punchline, nor smart enough to bend its looniness into something more substantial, ‘Storks’ views the world with the same confused outlook of its wide-eyed infants.”

After taking down three under-performing newcomers for its second straight win, Warner Bros.' Sully tries to make it three straight box office wins in a row this weekend. The true story drama will only face two newcomers, Sony Pictures' The Magnificent Seven remake and Warner Bros.' animated comedy Storks, both of which should easily unseat Sully. While we think it will be close, The Magnificent Seven should come out on top with $24.7 million.

Box Office Mojo reports that The Magnificent Seven, director Antoine Fuqua's Western remake starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt, will debut in roughly 3,600 theaters, while Storks will open in 3,800 theaters. The Magnificent Seven currently holds a 61% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, although not enough reviews are in for Storks quite yet. We're predicting that Storks will debut in second place with $23.6 million, but it's certainly possible that these two newcomers flip-flop in the top two spots this weekend.

There’s a fleeting moment at the end of “Storks” rich with warm possibilities. One after another, would-be parents from all walks of life — gay, straight, single and many different skin colors — embrace their new infants, celebrating the universality of family bonds in a way that’s uniquely contemporary for a major studio release of this sort. The story leading up to it, however, falls short of such foolproof logic. “Storks” takes place in a world eerily devoid of sex, in which parenthood has been corporatized and then abandoned by a factory run by talking birds whose priorities have shifted to delivering non-human goods. Co-directed by Doug Sweetland and Nicholas Stoller (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall”) from Stoller’s screenplay, it doesn’t have the brains to wrestle with the outrageous conceit, nor the inspired humor to distract from the rampant absurdity. It’s a dumb movie in search of a sweet idea.

Despite its ages-old association with delivering bouncing bundles of joy, the noble stork has been sadly underrepresented onscreen. Other than the one who dispatched Mrs. Jumbo’s big-eared baby in 1941’s Dumbo and the Groucho-esque Vlasic pickles mascot from the '70s (“that’s the best-tastin’ pickle I ever hoid!”), the animated flock has been mighty scarce in movies. For the studios, 2016 has mostly been about the year of the animal, highlighted by Disney’s billion-dollar “Zootopia” and Pixar’s “Finding Dory” (the new all-time animation box office leader).

However, the year culminates with another potentially strong Disney Oscar contender, “Moana” (November 23), along with two musicals: Illumination’s “Sing” (December 21), which played to cheering crowds this week at the Toronto Film Festival, and DreamWorks’ “Trolls” (Nov. 4). Warner Bros., meanwhile, offers the buddy comedy, “Storks” (September 23), which has attracted good world of mouth for its humor.

Disney explores new territory with the Polynesian-themed “Moana,” the first foray into CG for directors John Musker and Ron Clements (“The Princess and the Frog,” “Aladdin,” “The Little Mermaid”), who push the legacy in a new direction with contemporary appeal.

Your family is your flock and your flock is your family. Warner Bros has debuted another new trailer for the animated Storks movie, co-directed by Nicholas Stoller & Doug Sweetland. I'm not sure if this will be any good, but hopefully it will have some funny moments and that might make it enjoyable. Have a look.

Animated adventures have been big at the box office over the past decade, but it's a genre usually dominated by Pixar, Disney and DreamWorks. Though Warner Bros. has also had its fare share of CG hits, the studio returns this fall with its most ambitious comedy yet! Storks is in theaters this September. Warner Brothers opened their CinemaCon presentation with a sizzle reel of marquee films developed by the studio, concluding with a splash of upcoming titles like Suicide Squad and Central Intelligence. As the reel wrapped, Warner Entertainment Chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara took the stage. Tsujihara made some big promises to the exhibitors in attendance, that he would not let new technology or any middle man come between the iconic studio and the cinema operators. His talk leaned heavily on the upcoming DC slate of at least 10 films over the next 5 years, one of which he confirmed will be a standalone Untitled Batman Reboot directed by Ben Affleck.

The story revolves around a stork baby delivery service, and it seems like it has potential to be a fun flick.

Storks was written and co-directed by Nicholas Stoller, who is the director of films such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Neighbors, and Get Him to the Greek. The fact that he is basically spearheading the production makes me think that this movie will be better than it looks. The guy tends to make great comedies that I enjoy.

Today, People has debuted a photo from this animated movie, which offers our first look at Hunter, voiced by Kelsey Grammer. Andy Samberg and Kelsey Grammer will lend their voices to the animated comedy Storks.

The Warner Bros project comes from Yes Man writer Nicholas Stoller and Presto director Doug Sweetland.

Stoller's original screenplay will poke fun at the fabled place of storks in Western culture.

Samberg is an animation veteran from his work in Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and the Hotel Transylvania series, while Grammer has voiced the evil Sideshow Bob in The Simpsons for 26 years.

Warner Bros presidents Dan Fellman and Veronika Kwan Vandenberg said in a statement that they are "thrilled to be broadening [the studio's] animation slate".

"Storks is an innovative idea that is sure to delight kids and families all over the world," Kwan Vandenberg commented.

Storks is set for release on September 23, 2016.

It’s not all Lego over at Warner Bros. animation. Despite the huge franchise-worthiness of Emmet and co., the company is still developing other ideas. It now has Andy Samberg and Kelsey Grammer on board to voice Storks. The film comes from the combination of Nick Stoller (who had Samberg pop up in a cameo for Bad Neighbors) and Pixar veteran Doug Sweetland, who likely has some experience with the subject since he was at the Emeryville company when Partly Cloudy, the short about a cloud creating dangerous babies and his stork pal, was in production. Warner Bros. is looking to cash in on the the feature film animation market, and they've developed a plan to go up against Walt Disney Pictures, 20th Century Fox, DreamWorks Animation, and Sony Pictures. Warner Bros. Pictures Group President Jeff Robinov announced today that the studio has formed "a feature animation creative consortium, marking a new and innovative approach to the establishment of a diverse and far-reaching animation slate."

They have brought on several talented people to help them develop and produce high-end animated films. The team includes John Requa and Glenn Ficarra, (Crazy, Stupid, Love., Cats & Dogs); Nicholas Stoller (The Muppets); Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs); and Jared Stern (Mr. Popper’s Penguins). In an effort to catch up with the animated films being generated at other studios, Warner Bros has formed what it calls a feature animation creative consortium. They’ve identified a core group of filmmakers to form a Justice League for the production of cartoons. The team’s goal will be to generate one animated film per year. John Requa and Glenn Ficarra, Nicholas Stoller, Phil Lord and Chris Miller and Jared Stern are the first directors in the program. They aren’t exclusive to the studio, and will develop animated projects along with the live action films they direct. Stoller has written Storks, which will be directed by Doug Sweetland for 2015 release; Requa and Ficarra will spearhead Smallfoot, from an original idea by Despicable Me‘s Sergio Pablos, who’ll direct for 2016 release. The Set-up

Short films from Pixar, many featuring characters from the studio's feature fims, are presented.

The Delivery

This second collection of short films from Pixar features 12 cartoons in stunning high definition. Many of the shorts were previously available on Pixar home video releases (including "Hawaiian Vacation" and "Air Mater"), and three are Academy Award nominees.

What we get in Volume 2 of the series is an eclectic mix of styles and approaches, and for the most part, it all works well. While some are mildly amusing, others (like "Day and Night") are exceptional, that entertain and manage to be original.

 

 

The shorts included in the collection are:

"Your Friend the Rat" Ratatouille's Remy and Emile provide the disgusting yet funny history of rats. Director Jim Capobianco and production designer Nate Wragg provide an optional audio commentary.

Sony Pictures Animation continues to expand its stable of talented filmmakers with the signing of three-time Emmy Award winner Genndy Tartakovsky (Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, Star Wars: Clone Wars) to an overall agreement that extends beyond his current directorial film debut of Hotel Transylvania to include development and direction of his own projects, as well as an all-new take on Popeye. The deal was announced today by Bob Osher, President of Sony Pictures Digital Productions, and Michelle Raimo-Kouyate, President of Production, Sony Pictures Animation.
