The Best Dennis Quaid Movies, Ranked
Image
Since the 1980s, Dennis Quaid has been one of Hollywood's most talented stars, leading everything from science fiction to thriller movies. The actor is at his best in more lighthearted and relatable roles, which have endeared him to generations of moviegoers as a great, average Joe-style performer. That has been reflected through his many roles, leading some of the best blockbusters and best-written films of the last forty years.

Quaid's career includes a variety of movies from different genres, but the actor is best known for his common sense, wholesome and relatable all-American characters. Quaid's endlessly optimistic persona shines through in virtually every movie in which he stars, making him especially suited to family movies. From epic disaster blockbusters to heartfelt dramas, Quaid continues to be one of the most compelling stars of his generation.

Updated by Jordan Iacobucci on February 22, 2025: Dennis Quaid is still as relevant as...

10 A-List Actors Who Won Awards For Their First Movies
Image
It can often take an entire career for A-list actors to gain major accolades for their work, yet others manage to win awards with their very first film. While the list of incredible actors who have yet to win an Oscar is a long one, its also astounding just how many amazing performers did some of their best work on their debut movie. These award wins often helped great actors gain widespread recognition and helped kickstart popular careers that spanned numerous genres and styles.

Some of the best actors ever won major awards for their feature film debuts, which helped give them the fame and notoriety required to become among the most sought-after performers in Hollywood. While some of these awards went to young actors just getting started in the industry, other performers brought a wealth of experience from theater and television to their acting debut. No matter what the backstory was,...

July on the Criterion Channel Includes Shakespeare, Glauber Rocha, Gregg Araki, Godzilla & More
Image
How now, what news: the Criterion Channel’s July lineup is here. Eight pop renditions of Shakespeare are on the docket: from movies you forgot were inspired by the Bard (Abel Ferrara’s China Girl) to ones you’d wish to forget altogether (Joss Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing), with maybe my single favorite interpretation (Michael Almereyda’s Hamlet) alongside Paul Mazursky, Gus Van Sant, Baz Luhrmann, Derek Jarman, and (of course) Kenneth Branagh. A neonoir collection arrives four months ahead of Noirvember: two Ellroy adaptations, two from De Palma that are not his neonoir Ellroy adaptation, two from the Coen brothers (i.e. the chance to see a DVD-stranded The Man Who Wasn’t There in HD), and––finally––a Michael Winner picture given Criterion’s seal of approval.

Columbia screwballs run between classics to lesser-seens while Nicolas Roeg and Heisei-era Godzilla face off. A Times Square collection brings The Gods of Times Square,...

Former Disney Star Jenna Ortega Remakes ‘The Parent Trap’ With Fred Armisen For ‘SNL’ Skit
Image
Jenna Ortega could have starred in a remake of The Parent Trap.

Ortega, who was a child actress and star of Disney Channel comedy Stuck in the Middle, did, however, give it a go on Saturday Night Live.

She teamed with her Wednesday co-star Fred Armisen to read through the lines, while Bowen Yang directed.

Ortega, who was not born when the Lindsay Lohan-fronted remake of The Parent Trap premiered in 1998, may have aged out of actually starring in a new version of the body identical twin comedy, but in the skit, she played both 11-year-old twins Hallie Parker and Annie James.

Armisen, as Raymond, was just helping out reading the lines, or was he?

The Parent Trap, which was based on David Swift’s 1961 Hayley Mills-fronted comedy, starred Lohan as well as Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson. It was directed and co-written by Nancy Meyers.

James Wong Howe, 1974
The Criterion Channel Reveal September Lineup: James Wong Howe, Sambizanga, Romy Schneider, Ang Lee & More
James Wong Howe, 1974
Cinematography retrospectives are the way to go—more than a thorough display of talent, it exposes the vast expanse a Dp will travel, like an education in form and business all the same. Accordingly I’m happy to see the Criterion Channel give a 25-film tribute to James Wong Howe, whose career spanned silent cinema to the ’70s, populated with work by Howard Hawks, Michael Curtz, Samuel Fuller, Alexander Mackendrick, Sydney Pollack, John Frankenheimer, and Raoul Walsh.

Further retrospectives are granted to Romy Schneider (recent repertory sensation La piscine among them), Carlos Saura (finally a chance to see Peppermint frappe!), the British New Wave, and groundbreaking distributor Cinema 5, who brought to U.S. shores everything from The Man Who Fell to Earth and Putney Swope to Pumping Iron and Scenes from a Marriage.

September also yields streaming premieres for the recently restored Bronco Bullfrog, Ang Lee’s Pushing Hands,...

‘Abbott Elementary’ is latest in long line of TV comedies set in schools
Image
Though streaming and cable comedies such as “Ted Lasso,” “Hacks,” “Barry” and “Only Murder in the Building” are poised to receive multiple Emmy nominations, ABC’s perceptive and smartly funny mockumentary “Abbott Elementary” may just teach them a lesson. The freshman series, a valentine to educators who overcome trials and tribulations to teach, is a leading Emmy nomination contender.

Set in a predominately Black, grossly underfunded grade school in Philadelphia, the series stars Quinta Brunson as an eager second-grade teacher who is one of the few educators who have made it to a second year at the school. Brunson also created the series which was inspired by her mother who was a teacher in Philly for 40 years. Reviews were glowing for the series. The L.A. Times critic Robert Lloyd wrote: “The series feels fresh even as it mines the familiar. As much as characters represent an agglomeration of types,...

Robert Morse dead: Legendary Broadway actor and ‘Mad Men’ star dies at 90
Image
Robert Morse, a legend of the New York stage who had a late-in-life resurgence as the eccentric businessman Bertram Cooper on “Mad Men,” is dead at the age of 90. His death was made public by writer-producer Larry Karaszewski on Twitter.

My good pal Bobby Morse has passed away at age 90. A huge talent and a beautiful spirit. Sending love to his son Charlie & daughter Allyn. Had so much fun hanging with Bobby over the years – filming People v Oj & hosting so many screenings pic.twitter.com/H1vCD3jjul

— Larry Karaszewski (@Karaszewski) April 21, 2022

Morse had some small roles on the boards beginning in the mid-1950s, then got his big break in “How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” in 1961. Indeed, this iconic Camelot-era musical later reworked into a film in which Morse also starred, worked as a significant wink to insiders when Morse appeared in “Mad Men” decades later.

Pollyanna
Andrew Burt and David Swift in Black Panther (1977)
Peering into the past through the rosiest of glasses, Pollyanna is the dream child of two dedicated nostalgists, Walt Disney and writer/director David Swift. Considering the sentimental story line—a young orphan charms a morose midwestern town with her “glad game”—the film is even-tempered and never bathetic, thanks mainly to 13-year old Hayley Mills, a natural actress if ever there was one. The wonderful little lady is surrounded by a cast of sturdy pros including Jane Wyman, Richard Egan, and a memorable turn by Agnes Moorehead as the town’s head crank.

The post Pollyanna appeared first on Trailers From Hell.

Image
Carol Arthur, an actress known for appearing in Hot Stuff, Intrepid and Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles and the widow of Dom DeLuise has died. She was 85.

The actress died Sunday at the Mary Pickford House at the Motion Picture & Television Fund senior home in Woodland Hills, the retirement center confirmed.

Born in Hackensack, N.J., in 1935, Arthur kicked off her acting career in 1971 as Christina in David Swift’s television series Arnie. After Making It and Emergency!, came her time as Harriett Johnson in Brooks’ Oscar-nominated comedy Blazing Saddles. In the film, starring Gene Wilder and Cleavon Little, Arthur’s Harriett expresses “extreme displeasure” towards Little’s Sheriff Bart in a strongly worded letter.

“The fact that you have sent him here just goes to prove that you are the leading asshole in the state,” Harriett reads to an approving crowd. She also has a famous line when Little was...

Trailblazer Nancy Meyers To Receive WGA West’s Laurel Award For Screenwriting Achievement
Nancy Meyers
Nancy Meyers, the highest-grossing female writer-director-producer in Hollywood’s box office history, will be the recipient of the WGA West’s 2020 Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement.

Diane Keaton, who starred in Meyers’ 2003 film Something’s Gotta Give, will present the award at the 72nd annual Writers Guild Awards ceremony on February 1 in Los Angeles. The award is presented to guild members who have “advanced the literature of motion pictures and made outstanding contributions to the profession of the screenwriter.”

Drink Up! Official Trailer for 'Beers of Joy' Documentary About Beer
"Tasting is something that requires all of your focus." Gravitas Ventures has released the official trailer for a documentary titled Beers of Joy, a love letter to and appreciation of the wonderful beverage known as "beer". The concept of what became Beers of Joy was first born out of Anheuser-Busch's desire to create an entertaining film that not only celebrated the beer industry, but also told the inspiring stories of the people behind it in a way that would resonate far beyond the world of beer. So it's admittedly all kind of a corporate promo, but also an actual documentary about beer. The film spends time with four different people involved in exploring and making beer, learning about its history, and appreciating it at its finest. A "fascinating and savory journey following four people as they immerse themselves in their passion for beer." A delicious doc. Here's the official...

Disney Classics on Blu ray
Though long embraced by parents as family-friendly safe zones, Disney’s live action films were just as often called out for their squeaky clean posturing and regressive world views.

Fair enough – but as Noah Cross growled, “Politicians, ugly buildings and whores all get respectable if they last long enough” – and a good number of those mild-mannered entertainments, while not exactly ready for the arthouse, are at least worthy of a second look.

Disney Movie Club has released some of those Baby Boomer perennials in sterling Blu ray transfers – unfortunately available to club members only. Here’s part one in a rundown of the more tantalizing items.
