Changed her professional name because there already was an actress named Kristine Young. She named herself "Sutherland" after her cat, whom she named Donald after actor Donald Sutherland.

Took her last name from Donald Sutherland. Her brother-in-law, James Pankow, was a member of Chicago with Terry Kath. After Kath's death, his widow, Camelia Lynne, eventually married Donald's son, Kiefer Sutherland.

Was cast as Buffy's mother, Joyce Summers, in Buffy contre les vampires (1997) because the producers thought she and Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played Buffy, looked a lot like each other.

Studied Theatre at the University of Kentucky and The Drama Studio in London.

Appeared with David Boreanaz (Angel), Nicholas Brendon (Xander), and Mark Lutz (Groosalugg) at the Angel And Buffy Convention held at the Brighton Centre in Brighton, England, 29 August, 2003.

In the episode 'The Girl in Question' it is stated by a house-sitting Andrew Wells that Buffy and Dawn are living in Rome and Dawn is going to school there to learn Italian. This is an in-joke based on Kristine Sutherland who played Joyce Summers on Buffy. She was largely absent from season 4 because she was house-sitting in Italy, partly to allow her daughter to go to school there and learn Italian. Now her character's daughters do the same.
