The Return of the Living Dead (1985) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
1985 gave us one of the most important zombie movies of all time. It was a sequel to the movie that gave us zombies as we know them and probably signaled the end of the world on screen. Day of the Dead you say? As much as I love that slow-paced close-out to George Romero’s original trilogy, I’m talking about something a little different. I’m talking about running zombies that can’t be killed, rabid weasels, Burt and Ernie, partying when it’s party time, and a true return of the living dead. Dan O’Bannon horror comedy expertly walks the line between the two genres with genuine laughs and frightening thrills. It could have been a very different experience for audiences who now know it as a perfect summer horror film and celebrate July 3rd every year. It could have been more like the very obscure book it...

Night of the Living Dead: The Official Story of the Film book coming in September
Image
Back in 1968, George A. Romero brought the world the horror classic Night of the Living Dead, the film that changed the definition of what “zombies” could be without even calling its ghouls zombies! This September, author Simon Braund is teaming up with Titan Books to bring us a 192 page book on the making of that masterpiece, Night of the Living Dead: The Official Story of the Film. To be exact, the book will be reaching store shelves on September 30th.

Directed by Romero from a screenplay he wrote with John A. Russo, Night of the Living Dead has the following synopsis: A disparate group of individuals takes refuge in an abandoned house when corpses begin to leave the graveyard in search of fresh human bodies to devour. The pragmatic Ben does his best to control the situation, but when the reanimated bodies surround the house, the other survivors begin to panic.

Return of the Living Dead reboot teaser arrives tomorrow (Updated with a mini-clip)
Image
Almost forty years ago, writer/director Dan O’Bannon delivered one of the most highly entertaining zombie movies of all time with The Return of the Living Dead (watch it Here)… and in the process, spawned a franchise. There was the goofy comedy of The Return of the Living Dead Part II, the “Romeo and Juliet with zombies” love story Return of the Living Dead ///, and a couple sequels nobody paid much attention to, Return of the Living Dead: Necropolis and Return of the Living Dead: Rave to the Grave. The franchise has been dormant for nineteen years – but last year, it was announced that Muck and Kill Her Goats director Steve Wolsh, who also happens to be the CEO of the company Living Dead Media, was developing a reboot of The Return of the Living Dead. And now, the official website has revealed that a teaser for the reboot will be dropping online tomorrow,...

Return of the Living Dead rights dispute goes to court
Image
Almost forty years ago, writer/director Dan O’Bannon delivered one of the most highly entertaining zombie movies of all time with The Return of the Living Dead (watch it Here). A company called Living Dead Media LLC claims to own the copyright to the original screenplay and the underlying script for that film, as well as other trademarks, which is why they announced last year that they’re moving ahead with a reboot. But last month, a new company called Rotld Originals LLC was formed, with Return of the Living Dead cast member Beverly Randolph, a.k.a. Beverly Dawn Hartley, signing the formation document. Judging by Randolph’s social media, it appears that some of her co-stars are involved in this company as well, their mission being to “gain back our rights of our images” and, from the looks of it, launch a website where fans will be able...

The Return of the Living Dead poster zombies are now ReAction Figures from Super7
Image
The 1985 zombie horror comedy The Return of the Living Dead (watch it Here) has some awesome poster art, featuring green-skinned zombies that are “back from the dead and ready to party”. Now the folks at Super7, a company that’s described as being “the premier pop-culture design house and producer of lifestyle-oriented collectibles, toys and apparel”, have taken to social media to reveal that they have turned a couple of those poster zombies into ReAction Figures! These figures will be available for purchase sometime this summer, but for now you can take a look at a picture of them at the bottom of this article.

Written and directed by Dan O’Bannon, The Return of the Living Dead has the following synopsis: When foreman Frank shows new employee Freddy a secret military experiment in a supply warehouse, the two klutzes accidentally release a gas that reanimates corpses into flesh-eating zombies. Romero’s Elegy: George A. Romero Foundation restoring and completing 1963 short film
George A. Romero is one of my favorite filmmakers and a personal hero of mine, so while we lost the man in 2017, I’ve been glad to see the work the George A. Romero Foundation has done to preserve his legacy. That includes unearthing his long-lost 1973 film The Amusement Park, finding a home for his archive collection (featuring his 1994 short film Jacaranda Joe) at the University of Pittsburgh, and even setting up a podcast sequel to Night of the Living Dead. Now the Foundation has announced that they have located an unfinished short film that Romero shot in Pittsburgh in 1963, and they plan to complete it under the title Romero’s Elegy. They could use the help of Romero’s fans to do so, and are accepting donations at This Link.

It doesn’t sound like this short film was horror, but it was shot by one of our greatest genre directors.

George A. Romero’s ‘Elegy’ – Help Fund the Completion of a Once-Lost Short Film from 1963
In the wake of George A. Romero’s long lost movie The Amusement Park finally seeing release last year, The George A. Romero Foundation is now looking to restore another part of the late filmmaker’s legacy. “With your support, we can finish George A. Romero’s once-lost short film from 1963,” the team says this week, referring to a short film titled Elegy.

The Romero Foundation details, “At 23 years old, George A. Romero implored his uncle for a new Bolex camera. His uncle gave him $5,000 to purchase it. With his new friends, Russ Streiner and Richard Ricci, they shot a series of short films, all thought to have been lost. One of these films, now entitled Romero’s Elegy, was found and is being restored by The Garf.

“Romero’s Elegy is a 21-minute film shot in Pittsburgh in 1963. Shot without sound or dialogue, the original intention was to add music and poetry to it.

The Return of the Living Dead: Uneeda warehouse is now a private residence, and it’s on the market
Image
The 1985 zombie horror comedy The Return of the Living Dead (watch it Here) is one of my all-time favorite movies, and every now and then I like to look up the filming locations of my favorites to see what they look like these days. By watching a Sean Clark video on the locations used to bring The Return of the Living Dead to the screen, I learned that the building that stood in for the Uneeda medical supply warehouse in the movie has been converted into a private residence. So I looked up this address – 698 Moulton Avenue in Los Angeles, California – and learned that the Uneeda-building-turned-private-residence is now on the market! The property is listed on Zillow, with plenty of pictures showing off what the place looks like now that it’s a home with three bedrooms, four bathrooms, and a private pool. And if any die hard fan of...

Night of the Living Dead 4K

Anticipating new interest in one of the most influential horror films of all time, Criterion gives George Romero’s zombie classic the boost to 4K. Pittsburghs’ most famous movie production returns American horror to its down-home roots, with excellent docu-drama direction and enthusiastic performances. It’s like a Disney film: every seven years a new generation will arrive to debate whether the besieged victims should have fought upstairs, or all retreated to the basement. It’s a 3-disc set, one 4K Uhd and two Blu-rays. Where’s the Bill ‘Chilly Billy’ Cardille theme song?

“They Won’t Stay Dead!”: The History and Undying Impact of Night Of The Living Dead Trading Cards
If trading cards are the ultimate Night of the Living Dead collectible, I'd also argue that Night of the Living Dead is the ultimate non-sports trading card. And it's because of the autographs. Stay with me...

The non-sports trading card scene was introduced to the subject of horror movies as early as the 1960s, with Nu Cards' Horror Monster Series and Topps' Monster Laffs, followed by You'll Die Laughing and Shocking Laffs in the 1970s.

What these cards had in common is that they depicted numerous early horror and contemporary B-horror movies in a satirical format. It seems that comedy was the only safe way to deliver horror trading cards to kid consumers of the era. Following blowback from the ban on Topps' famous 1962 sci-fi horror set, Mars Attacks, printers weren't taking any more chances.

It wasn't until the 1980s that individual horror flicks got their own dedicated, non-satirical...

Fright Rags’ New Short Film Dead Neighbors Imagines What Might Have Inspired George A. Romero to Make Night Of The Living Dead
Last year, Fright Rags imagined what the day after Halloween might be like for Michael Myers in their short film November First. Now, one year later, another short film, Dead Neighbors, has been released by Fright Rags, this time imagining what might have inspired a young George A. You can watch Dead Neighbors in its entirety below, and be sure to keep an eye out for Russell Streiner, who played Johnny in Night of the Living Dead. This time around, Streiner plays a cemetery groundskeeper, but he resurrects his iconic phrase, "They're coming to get you!"

‘Night of the Living Dead’ Blu-ray Review (Criterion)
Stars: Duane Jones, Judith O’Dea, Karl Hardman, Keith Wayne, Russell Streiner | Written by George A. Romero, John A. Russo | Directed by George A. Romero

For many of us, Night of the Living Dead is a film we first experienced on late-night TV – some grizzled old print squashed onto a tiny Crt. Now, 50 years after its miraculous inception, Criterion have brought George A. Romero’s small, scary, seminal movie into the gleaming new world of 4K. Night is a public domain movie, mostly to its detriment – but now we have the essential version.

It’s the simplest of stories: a group of people bickering in a farmhouse while a zombie (sorry, “ghoul”) apocalypse closes in. It seems basic now – clichéd even – but nothing like this had been seen at the time. Audiences (including traumatised children at the matinee showings) were appalled and delighted. 1980s splatter had been born a decade premature,...

The Criterion Collection Will Resurrect Night Of The Living Dead, Silence Of The Lambs With 4K Blu-Rays
The Silence of the Lambs and Night of the Living Dead, two bona fide horror gems, are officially joining the Criterion Collection.

Each film classic will receive a 4K restoration, along with scores of special features, which will be available from February 13th, 2018. Now how’s that for a Valentine’s Day treat?

On a more somber note, news of this re-release arrives at a difficult time for the horror community: Silence of the Lambs director Jonathan Demme passed away back in April, while George A. Romero, the undisputed king of zombies, died in July. Indeed, it was difficult losing two legendary filmmakers in the space of three months, but this posthumous recognition ensures their finest achievements are ushered into the pantheon of great cinema.

Each release will come with different bonus features – Lambs, for instance, includes audio commentary from Demme himself, along with Jodie Foster, Anthony Hopkins and screenwriter...

A New Phase of Horror: Close-Up on "Night of the Living Dead"
Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead (1968) is playing October 1 - 31, 2017 in the United States as part of the series Prelude to Halloween. For all of its social and cinematic influence, its current notoriety as the granddaddy of the contemporary zombie movie (and television show and comic book and videogame), George A. Romero’s 1968 debut, Night of the Living Dead, was a remarkably unassuming production. Shot in mid- through late-1967 on a budget of around $114,000, with a cast and crew of unknown actors and amateur locals, the film went on to accumulate an international gross of more than $30 million, setting the standard for a progressively popular horror sub-genre in the process. One now marvels at its systematic structure, its discerning formal design, its clever manipulation of time and space, and its shrewd exploitation of generic conventions.

George A. Romero and the Meaning of His Zombies
Ryan Lambie Feb 5, 2019

George A. Romero's zombies were about more than just eating flesh. They were a commentary on American life in the '60s.

This article comes from Den of Geek UK.

In April 1968, director George A. Romero threw some reels of film in the trunk of his car and took a long drive from Pittsburgh to New York. The grainy, black-and-white footage stored on those reels was little short of incendiary: then called Night of the Flesh Eaters, Romero's film would, in time, change horror cinema forever.

Shot on a budget of just $114,000, Night of the Living Dead (as it was later renamed) was aggressively lo-fi: its producer, Russell Streiner, also played one of the film's first victims - he gets the immortal line, "They're coming to get you, Barbara" before he's attacked by a shambling zombie. The copious gouts of blood splashed around were actually generous helpings of chocolate syrup.

There's a 4K Restoration of Night Of The Living Dead That George Romero Says Is "Definitive"
George A. Romero’s 1968 seminal classic Night of the Living Dead has recently announced a proper 4K restoration, and fans who have attended the exhibition screenings, including the one happening at the MoMA tonight, are first to experience the film as the director intended it to be. The trouble with past remasters lie with how “pristine” the new prints look, a wholly contrarian feat against Romero’s deliberately grimy tale of the undead. The restoration by the Museum of Modern Art and The Film Institute, the latest in a years’ worth of reissues and re-releases, seem to have captured the glory of the film, enough to get even Romero’s own seal of approval. In an interview with The Verge, film producer Russ Streiner remarked: ...

Marilyn Eastman, Duane Jones, and Judith Ridley in La Nuit des morts-vivants (1968)
George Romero Says Nobody Will Finance His Next Zombie Movie and ‘Night of the Living Dead’ Wouldn’t Get Made Today
Marilyn Eastman, Duane Jones, and Judith Ridley in La Nuit des morts-vivants (1968)
For nearly 50 years, George Romero has lived with a zombie legacy. In 1968, he directed “Night of the Living Dead” on a bare-bones budget. The movie’s resonance today is undeniable: The walking dead are the biggest motif of the modern horror genre, and millions of fans have Romero to thank for it. However, Romero himself has maintained a complicated relationship with his eerie creations. While he directed a series of sequels to “Night” over the course of many decades, it’s been seven years since his last entry, “Survival of the Dead.” But that’s not for lack of trying.

Still, Romero can rest easy on the cultural impact of his first zombie movie, which continues to receive institutional support. On November 5, the Museum of Modern Art will present a new 4k restoration of “Night of the Living Dead” as part of its To Save and Project festival taking place throughout the month.

Blu-ray Review: Return of the Living Dead Collector’s Edition (Scream Factory)
Reviews like this are tough, because a movie like Return of the Living Dead has been discussed-to-death on the internet for at least the last two decades. What can one possibly say that another hasn’t already? In addition to that, this is also the third Blu-ray release of the film I have seen. There was the disappointing MGM release in 2010, and then much better Second Sight release from the UK that dropped in 2012 and resurrected the original audio track containing the songs that were cut from the Us release. And here comes Scream Factory to topple them all. Sorry to spoil my review, but this is the definitive Blu-ray release of Return of the Living Dead. I have never seen this movie look so beautiful in all the years I have watched it. Couple with that, the fact that there are several audio options for you to choose from,...

The Return Of The Living Dead Collector’s Edition Blu-ray Release Details & Cover Art
Since it was announced at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, The Return of the Living Dead Collector’s Edition Blu-ray has been eagerly awaited by fans looking to party with Dan O’Bannon’s unique brand of zombies. Scream Factory is now making those fans happy with their official July release details for the two-disc Blu-ray that contains more than twelve hours of bonus features, comes with new cover art, and is available in two separate editions:

Press Release: Writer/director Dan O’Bannon (Alien, Lifeforce) puts an uproarious spin on the zombie apocalypse movie in 1985’s cult classic The Return Of The Living Dead, starring Clu Gulager (A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge), James Karen (Mulholland Drive) and Don Calfa (Weekend at Bernie’s). Considered one of the campiest undead romps of its time, the film helped launch the career of scream queen Linnea Quigley (Night of the Demons,...

120 Essential Horror Scenes Part 6: Stalkings
Horror films are built on our voyeuristic impulses. Our desire to witness or experience the obscene, the taboo, and the grotesque draws us into films about crazed killers or unseen forces. We don’t just want to be shocked, we want to be vulnerable. The stalking scene is a staple of the genre because it involves us in the filmmaking process by providing us a point of view: usually third person from a victim or first person from a killer. Unlike a chase scene, where both parties are aware of the game, the stalking often involves an oblivious participant. These are the slowest and most methodical scenes. There’s no rush to where we’re going because there is no destination to get to. Once the participant becomes aware, there’s only four options: run, hide, fight, or die.

The Birds (1963) – Bird’s eye view

Although not as shocking as Psycho,...

Ten truly memorable zombies
Are zombies really that memorable? When you think about it, today’s undead munchers are not exactly an interesting crowd since all they do between meals is wander around in a trance. The pre Romero vegetarians are even worse, as they spend most of their time under the thumb of a zombie master, although on the odd occasion they do rebel against their tyrannical leader.

Zombie movies are a dime a dozen these days, and apart from a few moderately successful variations, they haven’t progressed beyond the flesh-eating antics of Night of the Living Dead (1968). But on the odd occasion a couple of zombies stand out from the faceless crowd of walking corpses, and what some these ghouls lack in personality, they make up for in other ways.

So here’s a list of ten memorable zombies that stood out for me, as an avid horror movie fan.

The...
