Canceled Chicago Fire Spinoff Never Got a Fair Chance to Succeed
Image
One Chicago seems untouchable, but one canceled Chicago Fire spinoff from 2017 tells another story.

I’m talking about Chicago Justice — the Law & Order of Chicagoland, which only had 13 episodes before NBC canned it.

I loved this show and still miss it. NBC had its reasons, but I think the network made a mistake by axing this legal drama without giving it a chance to shine.

(Elizabeth Morris/NBC) I Loved Chicago Justice’s Connection To The Law & Order Universe, But NBC Saw It As A Weakness

Chicago Justice was the most connected of all the One Chicago shows to the Law & Order franchise.

One of its biggest selling points was Ada Peter Stone — the son of Michael Moriarty’s Benjamin Stone, the Ada who tried cases during the first five seasons of Law & Order.

Why Chicago Justice was cancelled (Why season 2 isn't happening)
Image
One Chicago has proven to be one of NBC's most durable brands. Three of its shows have recently hit a decade on the air, and the 2025 crossover event proves that there's more demand than ever for stories set in this world. So what happened with Chicago Justice?

The fourth installment in the One Chicago franchise was scrapped after just one season, despite having the same baseline appeal and set as its peers. It even had the benefit of a lead character who had already been established on another show: Antonio Dawson (Jon Seda).

Chicago Justice was too similar to Law & Order Chicago Justice -- "Uncertainty Principle" Episode 107 -- Pictured: (l-r) Richard Brooks as Paul Robinette, Laroyce Hawkins as Kevin Atwater -- (Photo by: Elizabeth Morris/NBC)

Unfortunately, it did now meet the same success. NBC confirmed the show was not renewed for a second season, chairman Robert Blatt even provided context as to why.

8 best One Chicago crossover events (and the 2 worst)
Image
The One Chicago shows love their crossovers but which ones are the best and worst?

One Chicago has always been a fantastic universe to enjoy. Chicago Fire, Chicago Pd and Chicago Med are genius at how they make it so natural to coexist. Characters from one show can pop into another without looking obtrusive and distracting. There's also the great relationships across the shows from the Halstead brothers to Mouch and Trudy's marriage.

Crossovers between the shows are thus commonplace with NBC often doing special events across all three series. Some are better than others, with the best linking the shows together with a good storyline and character work. The weaker ones don't really offer a reason they need to be linked together when one episode could have done it.

For this list, these are full crossovers, not just characters from one show appearing in another. We're also only counting full One Chicago ones,...

This 61-Year-Old Thriller is Called One of Hitchcock's Best Films (But He Never Made It)
Image
Quick LinksCharade Starred Cary Grant and Audrey HepburnCharade Bears a Resemblance to Other Hitchcock FilmsThe Film Charade Is Technically in the Public Domain

Charade is a film that almost defies categorization. It's part mystery, part suspense, part romantic comedy, and it's often mistakenly credited to one of Hollywood's most iconic directors: Alfred Hitchcock. But another Hollywood icon, Stanley Donen, led the film. It featured music by Henry Mancini and a title song with lyrics by Johnny Mercer. Anyone who's watched a Hitchcock film can see why it's often mistaken for one of his own. Its twists and turns and suspenseful style often mirror the horror front-runner's.

Following its release, the film garnered a handful of award nominations. It's leading cast members were also recognized for their performance with the same honor. Charade would mark a clear turning point in both Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn's acting careers. And it's...

Why Raúl Esparza's Barba Left Law & Order: Svu
Image
Law & Order: Svu is currently the longest-running primetime live-action series on American television. With over five hundred episodes, fans are no strangers to beloved Svu characters being written off the show. However, that conceit doesn't take the sting out of seeing a fan favorite leave. In particular, Svu's Assistant District Attorney position has regularly been turned over every few seasons. But the loss of Raúl Esparza's Ada Rafael Barba remains one of the show's hardest departures.

Barba joined the Svu squad in Season 14 as a recurring character, before being promoted to a series regular in Season 15. During Raúl Esparza's tenure on the show, Rafael Barba provided not only a moral compass, which sometimes went against legal technicalities, but he also offered a distinct personality. Moreover, Barba's deep, personal friendship with Captain Olivia Benson was a moving testament to the power of relationships in the Law & Order franchise,...

20 Best Law & Order: Svu Seasons, Ranked
Image
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit is one of the longest-running procedural dramas on television. The series covers some of the most heinous cases on television. Svu also follows the detective's personal lives, their careers and their involvements with the cases they investigate, making the series engaging and entertaining for all viewers. Special Victims Unit changed the culture surrounding the discussion of sexual assault in popular culture, and some of the series' best seasons and episodes are still topic of debate years after their release.

With Law & Order: Special Victims Unit currently airing its 26th season, discussion has sprung up among fans about which seasons reign supreme for the series. With over a quarter-century's worth of quality television, there are a lot of seasons up for consideration. With memorable episodes and gripping storylines, some Svu seasons still stand out from the rest.

'A Good Surprise': Duchess Actor Philip Winchester on the Movie's Big Twist
Image
The following contains major spoilers for Duchess, now available digitally.

Duchess marks the welcome return of Philip Winchester to the action genre. Though the actor is more recognized for his network TV roles like litigating on Law & Order: Svu, his biggest and best parts have come in action-oriented projects. He has the great ability to fully develop a character while also making a running gunfight look easy, which is one of the strengths in Neil Marshall's gangster film.

However, Winchester's screen time in Duchess is cut short when his character Rob is murdered -- his death serving as the inciting incident that kicks off the title character's quest for revenge. In an interview with Cbr, the actor spoke about returning to the genre that he's so comfortable in. He also dished on learning about Rob's fate and how complicated it was to film the all-important death scene.

Jon M. Chu Shares His TCM Picks from August’s Lineup, Including ‘Carousel’ and ‘Charade’
Image
Like Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese before him, Jon M. Chu is sharing his TCM Picks from their upcoming lineup. The director of “Crazy Rich Asians,” “In the Heights,” and the upcoming “Wicked” is following in Guillermo del Toro’s footsteps in highlighting a great film that sometimes doesn’t get as much love as it should. Watch Chu’s picks in the video below.

Del Toro picked Alfred Hitchcock’s “Suspicion” among his favorites. It’s one of IndieWire’s as well, and we put it at #10 on our list of Hitchcock’s greatest movies. But that film is often overlooked, even by Hitchcock fans.

Similarly, movie musical lovers sometimes overlook Henry King’s 1956 adaptation of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “Carousel,” starring Shirley Jones and Gordon MacRae. The people who love it, though, fiercely advocate for it, and Chu is among them.

“I’ve loved ‘Carousel’ since I was a kid,...

Every One Chicago Show, Ranked
Image
Chicago Justice was an epic fail it was canceled after one season due to low ratings and lack of sustainability. Chicago Med's quality has declined as original cast members exit, affecting the engaging storylines and character development. Chicago Pd and Chicago Fire are the two best One Chicago shows.

One of the most popular and longest-running franchises on network TV is One Chicago on NBC, which started when Derek Haas and Michael Brandt created Chicago Fire and released it in the fall of 2012, and was consecutively followed by three spinoffs Chicago Pd, Chicago Med, and Chicago Justice. Every show in the One Chicago shared universe has had varying degrees of success. Some TV series have performed better than others, while one in particular was an epic fail many would rather forget about. Nevertheless, NBC's procedural franchise has prevailed over the years, resulting in major milestones and impressive accomplishments.

Is 1776 a Realistic Historical Film?
Image
Warning: This article contains extensive plot spoilers for 1776.

1776 portrays the creation of the USA as a clash of personalities as much as politics, highlighting the flaws and rhetoric of the Founding Fathers, specifically John Adams and Ben Franklin. The musical comedy also explores the struggle of competing political factions and their dilemma of fighting for their own beliefs versus the wishes of the public. With numerous artistic liberties concerning historical facts and characters, director Peter Hunt's 1776 is best viewed as a comedic drama rather than an epic saga.

While nowhere near a revisionist take on the historical genre, the 1972 Columbia-produced 1776 does attempt to frame the birth of the United States as less rosy than previous Hollywood biopics of famous figures. Including Ben Franklin's love of women of the night, the hypocrisy of Jefferson's abolitionist moralizing, and Adams' abrasive personality, the film supposedly took cues from the real...

‘Suffs’ is 9th show to win Tonys for Book and Score, but not Best Musical
Image
At this year’s Tony Awards “Suffs” managed to win prizes for Best Musical Book and Best Score, both of which went to Shaina Taub. Historically, winning those two accolades in particular would bode well for a show’s chances at Best Musical. Yet in a shocking turn of events, the top award went to “The Outsiders.” But this is not the first time something like this has happened.

SEETony Awards: Every winner (and nominee) in all 26 competitive categories

In 1978 “On the Twentieth Century” won Tonys for Best Score and Best Book (Comden and Green). It also won Best Actor in a Musical (John Cullum), Best Featured Actor in a Musical (Kevin Kline), and Best Scenic Design (Robin Wagner). Yet Best Musical that year went to Murray Horwitz and Richard Maltby Jr.‘s revue “Ain’t Misbehavin’.” A tribute to the music of Fats Waller, it also won Tonys for Best...

Why Did Chicago Justice Fail When Fire, Med, and P.D. Are Such Hits?
Image
Chicago Justice was the lowest-rated Chicago series with ratings lagging behind the other three shows. Chicago Justice became expendable due to overcrowding in the Chicago franchise after being perceived as redundant The show's resemblance to Law & Order, lackluster ratings, and overcrowded franchise led to its cancellation.

The Chicago television franchise, also known as One Chicago, originated on NBC in 2012 with the debut of the procedural drama television series Chicago Fire, which eventually became NBCs second-highest-rated drama series behind This Is Us. Chicago Fire was followed in 2014 by the first Chicago spin-off series, Chicago P.D., and then in 2015 by Chicago Med, which was renewed in March 2024 for a 10th season.

Following the successful debut of Chicago Med, the Chicago franchise, which presently averages approximately seven million viewers per episode for each of the franchises three shows, seemed poised to rival Chicago franchise producer Dick Wolfs Law & Order franchise in terms of launching successful spin-off shows.

One Chicago Renewal Update: Fire Season 13, Pd Season 12 & Med Season 10 Confirmed At NBC
Image
All three ongoing One Chicago shows have been renewed by NBC. This includes Chicago Fire season 13, P.D. season 12, and Med season 10. The shows are showing strong audience hold which spells good news for their longevity.

One Chicago has received a sweeping slate of renewals. The universe consists of interconnected NBC shows which all follow various first responders in Chicago. Fire, which premiered in 2013, was the first show in the universe, followed by P.D. in 2014 and Med in 2015. Each show was first introduced as a backdoor pilot in a previous show, and all have run consistently since then, with the only spinoff that failed to spark being the one-season 2015 show Justice.

Per Deadline, all three ongoing shows in the Illinois-set Dick Wolf universe have been renewed by NBC. This includes Chicago Fire season 13, P.D. season 12, and Med season 10. While episode counts have not yet been revealed, it seems...

Law & Order: Svu’s Kevin Kane Teases ‘Lingering Revenge’ Lurking in Bruno’s Future
Image
The one Law & Order: Svu character that TVLine readers ask about the most is Det. Terry Bruno, played by Kevin Kane. And we get it: A recurring role in the Bensonverse since Season 24, in addition to a few one-off appearances as different characters before that, has made Kane a full-time member of the squad (even if he technically remains a guest star). UK-Ireland box office preview: ‘Imaginary’ is main challenger to ‘Dune: Part Two’
Image
Lionsgate horror Imaginary opens in 516 UK-Ireland cinemas this weekend, as the first challenger to Dune: Part Two’s box office supremacy.

Directed by Jeff Wadlow who wrote the screenplay with Greg Erb and Jason Oremland, Imaginary stars DeWanda Wise as a woman who returns to her childhood home, to discover that the imaginary friend she left behind is real and unhappy at his abandonment.

It is the eighth feature from US filmmaker Wadlow, who has worked predominantly in the genre space with titles including 2018’s Truth Or Dare and 2020’s pandemic-afflicted Blumhouse’s Fantasy Island (£392,999; £763,958). His highest-grossing title is 2013’s Kick-Ass 2,...

Review: Chicago Pd Season 11, Episode 6 Is the Best of Voight
Image
The following contains major spoilers for Chicago Pd Season 11, Episode 6, "Survival," which debuted Wednesday, February 28 on NBC. It also contains discussion of violence.

Chicago Pd has endured a lot of criticism in recent years -- and not without reason. Much of it has fallen on character of Hank Voight, who's become a prime example of what people mean when they refer to "copaganda." The no holds barred approach to policing has divided viewers, with some feeling that Voight is problematic and others considering him as just entertainment. But that hasn't been the only issue with Voight. Sometimes, he just hasn't been interesting.

Voight was a dynamic character when he originally appeared on Chicago Fire to menace Matthew Casey, and he's always been the driving force of both the Intelligence Unit and Chicago Pd as a whole. Jason Beghe is more than capable of tearing through scenes. But Voight's arc since...

‘Charade’ celebrates diamond anniversary and is still a gem
Image
There are films you watched every time they pop up on TCM or streaming services. It’s like visiting an old friend. These movies put a smile on your face and a song in your heart. And one such film is “Charade,” which celebrates its 60th anniversary on Dec. 5. Deftly directed by Stanley Donen from a fun and thrilling Peter Stone screenplay, “Charade” stars Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn who exude a William Powell/Myrna Loy style chemistry that leaps off the screen. And let’s not forget that gorgeous Henry Mancini score, the romantic Oscar-nominated title tune “Charade,” with lyrics by Johnny Mercer and the pulsating Saul Bass title sequence.

I saw “Charade” when it was released, and I’ve probably seen it at least 15 more times. And each time seems like the first. Not many films have that kind of power. A 2010 Criterion Collection article by film historian...

‘CoComelon’ Producer Moonbug Taps Netflix Marketing Veteran Peter Stone as First CMO

Moonbug Entertainment, the kids’ entertainment powerhouse behind the hit “CoComelon” franchise, is bringing on board its first chief marketing officer: Peter Stone, a nine-year veteran of Netflix.

In the new role, Stone will be responsible for Moonbug’s global marketing strategy, as well as the evolution and growth of its brands. He will be based in Moonbug’s London office and starts Dec. 6, reporting to co-founder and CEO René Rechtman.

Stone joins Moonbug as the company says its brands “continue to see significant expansion.” Among recent developments, it called out Blippi’s debut on Roblox, “Morphle” soon launching on Disney+ and Disney Junior, and the new CoComelon show “CoComelon Lane” launching exclusively on Netflix.

Moonbug is part of Candle Media, the next-gen rollup play headed by ex-Disney execs Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs, backed by private-equity firm Blackstone Group. Candle acquired Moonbug in 2021 in a deal worth about $3 billion.

Titanic: The Musical Review: A Devastating Musical About The Doomed Ocean Liner
Image
The original 1997 Broadway staging of "Titanic: The Musical" created a legend of itself, rising from previews' technical snafus and mixed reviews before achieving a Best Musical Tony and a run of 804 performances. Nowadays, the title might sound like a memetic gag for those uninitiated with its existence. Really? A musical about the 1912 sinking of the Rms Titanic? But the music may just answer that by shattering the stoniest of hearts.

The morbidly curious or the die-hard theatre-heads who can't access or afford a live professional production now may get their chance. Coincidentally also sharing a 25th anniversary with James Cameron's blockbuster this year, "Titanic: The Musical" finally has a Fathom Events theatrical release, namely a capture of the Thom Southerland-directed production filmed at the Southampton's Mayflower Theatre. This BroadwayHD-produced capture (directed for the screen by Austin Shaw) preserves what has aged like fine wine: Maury Yeston's sumptuous score,...

In celebration of ‘Only Murders in the Building’: Revisiting Broadway’s best musical mysteries
Image
Hulu’s acclaimed “Only Murders in the Building,” currently vying for 11 Emmys, has gone all razzle dazzle in its third season. Make that rattle dazzle! Beleaguered Broadway director Oliver (Martin Short) was hoping for a comeback on the Great White Way with the mystery thriller “Death Rattle.” But when his leading man (Paul Rudd) is murdered, he decides to turn the straight play into a musical, “Death Rattle Dazzle!” And in the third episode, Meryl Streep’s nervous journeyman actress and Ashley Park’s leading lady performed the show-stopping ballad “Look for the Light” co-written by Sara Bareilles. One almost forgot the prime suspects in “Death Rattle Dazzle!” are the infant Pickwick triplets.

The 1959 multiple Tony winner “Redhead” also has a rather strange plot for a musical: a serial killer is stalking women in London in the 1880s during the time Jack the Ripper was terrorizing the city. Sounds like a real toe-tapper.

In honor of ‘Hijack’: A look back at suspenseful takeovers of planes, trains and ships
Image
Apple TV+’s hit limited series “Hijack” starring Idris Elba is a nail-biting thrill ride set in real-time. Over the years, there have been many types of hijack films. Besides planes, there have been suspenseful takeovers of ships, trains, subways and even trucks.

“The Taking of the Pelham One Two Three,” from 1974 — avoid the two remakes — is a superb thriller about four men who take over a New York subway car and hold the passengers, conductor and an undercover policeman hostage unless they get $1 million (remember that was a lot of money 49 years ago). If their demands aren’t met, they will start killing hostages. Directed by Joseph Sargent and adapted by Peter Stone from the best-selling novel by John Godey, “Taking” boasts a stellar cast at the top of their game including Walter Matthau, Robert Shaw, Hector Elizondo and Martin Balsam. David Shire penned the influential score.

10 Classic US TV Shows You Didn't Realize Were Remakes
Image
Over the years the U.S. has produced many remakes to put their own spin on international content, but there are quite a few long-running or popular classic U.S. TV shows that audiences had no idea were remakes. As soon as a television series reaches international acclaim or becomes exceedingly successful in its home country, chances are another country will give the premise a try in the form of a remake. On occasion, remakes will end up becoming more beloved than the original series. One of the most famous cases of this is with the American version of The Office.

Usually, remakes will keep the original series' basic narrative and a similar cast of characters, but tweak the dialogue, situations, and general aesthetic to fit the adapted story into a different culture. Another trend that seems to happen with remakes is that the first season will generally stick pretty...

The Taking of Pelham One Two Three 4K

A superb thriller is now better than ever on 4K. We’ve always known why it rewards viewings: it’s both thrilling and funny. When Robert Shaw, Martin Balsam and Hector Elizondo hijack a subway train, Walter Matthau must scramble to collect a ransom while trying to figure out how they’ll make their escape. Peter Stone’s dialogue is delightful — the loud & mouthy ’70s New Yorkers are hilariously abrasive — and lovable. “Who wants to know?!!!” Includes a Blu-ray disc and a new commentary.

2 | Was it fun (if almost jarring) to see Blue Bloods‘ Baez be silly, doing an impression of Erin? Also, what are we to make of Officer Witten attending the wedding of her partner and their superior?

Svu Finale Recap: Stone Cold
Peter Stone in Charlie Rose (1991)
If behind every successful woman is a man who tried to stop her, Law & Order: Svu‘s Olivia Benson must be the most successful woman in the universe.

The long list of dudes who’ve tried — and failed!— to take down Benson grows even longer in Svu‘s Season 20 finale, when Rob Miller literally guns for the lieutenant after she suspects him of murdering a teenage girl. Of course he doesn’t succeed in eliminating Benson, but his trial does have one heck of a disruptive outcome: Peter Stone, who reveals he’s kind of into Olivia, announces that he...

NBC has renewed Dick Wolf’s series for a record-setting 21st season, making it TV’s longest-running primetime live-action series, surpassing the previous mark of 20 seasons set by mothership series Law & Order (1990-2010) and Gunsmoke (1955-75).

The renewal also marks a milestone for Hargitay’s Lt. Benson as the longest-running character in a primetime live-action series. Hargitay surpassed Gunsmoke‘s James Arness and Milburn Stone as well as Kelsey Grammer who have all portrayed the same character for 20 consecutive seasons..

Stanley Donen
Stanley Donen Appreciation: From ‘Singin’ In The Rain’ To ‘Two For The Road’ A Dazzling Cinematic Legacy – Hammond
Stanley Donen
It is interesting this Oscar weekend to reflect on the life and career of the great Stanley Donen who died today at the age of 94. For those nominated tomorrow night who end up losing, don’t despair and just think of Stanley Donen , the director behind the camera on Singin’ In The Rain, Seven Brides For Seven Brothers, On The Town, Damn Yankees, The Pajama Game, It’s Always Fair Weather, Royal Wedding, Indiscreet, Charade , Arabesque, Two For The Road, Funny Face, and so many more. He never got a single Academy Award nomination in his career, not one, yet he made so many movies that are the epitome of style , and virtually (with mentors like Gene Kelly in particular) helped to reinvent the movie musical before passing the baton to Bob Fosse ,Rob Marshall, and Damien Chazelle among others all clearly influenced by him in one way or another.

Stanley Donen’s Oscar Speech Was an All-Time Classic — Watch
Stanley Donen
Like a lot of great filmmakers, Stanley Donen never won a competitive Academy Award — or even got nominated for one. But the “Singin’ in the Rain” and “Charade” director, who died this morning at 94, did receive an honorary Oscar for Lifetime Achievement in 1998. Presented by Martin Scorsese, it was emblematic of Donen’s vibrant spirit — and, apropos of his career, featured a musical interlude.

“Marty, it’s backwards, I should be giving this to you, believe me. And I want to thank the Board of Governors for this cute little fella which to me looks titanic,” he said before launching into song (the Titanic reference was a nod to how this was the night James Cameron’s film would win 11 Oscars). “Tonight, words seem inadequate. In musicals that’s when we do a song, so…”

Then he sang:

“Heaven, I’m in heaven,

and my heart beats so that I can hardly speak,...

Law & Order: Svu Season 20 Episode 12 Review: Dear Ben
I love when characters come full circle.

Peter Stone has always been a complicated character, wounded both by his dysfunctional relationship with his father and his inability to take care of his sister's mental health needs.

And on Law & Order: Svu Season 20 Episode 12, his problems paid off, not only giving viewers a window into his pain but allowing him to make up for his past by being a father figure to Noah.

The elder Stone's inattention to his son's obsession with baseball has long been a theme in Peter's backstory, but this story took it to a whole new level.

Throughout the hour, Stone learned new things about his father's absence from his life growing up that challenged his belief that he was always low on his dad's priority list.

The Infinity Rapist case tied everything together, forcing Stone to confront the fact that his workaholic dad did love him...

Law & Order: Svu Sneak Peek: Can Stone Solve Olivia's Noah Problem?
Law & Order: Svu‘s Olivia Benson is one of the best cops around, but there’s a case even she can’t crack: how to deal with Noah’s terrible attitude.

In this exclusive sneak peek from Thursday’s episode (NBC, 10/9c), Benson and Peter Stone spend some of their nearly non-existent free time hanging out at a playground with Olivia’s son. As they play baseball, Noah is an absolute joy to be around. He smiles! He laughs! He doesn’t sass Olivia! But that’s not always the case, his mom notes ruefully.

“You should see him at dinner time,...

17 Most Politically-Driven Plotlines of 2018
Oscar Wilde wrote that "life imitates art for more than art imitates life." Writers have been forever basing their stories and scripts on the world around them. Still, as Wilde suggests, the books we read, the shows we see, and the lessons we learn play a role in our decisions and behaviors.

Knowing this, writers like to feed us messages that make us think and even sometimes bring us to their way of thinking. In recent years, the real world (such a terrible place to live) has been fraught with a great deal of tension politically. The left and right seem more at odds than ever, and everybody is speaking out.
