Trivia

Martha Stewart

Edit
  • Her father taught her gardening; her mother taught her how to cook, bake and sew. Their next door neighbors (retired bakers) taught her how to bake pies and cakes.
  • One of the first female stockbrokers (at Perlberg, Monness, Williams and Sidel) on Wall Street. She got her license on 14 August 1968.
  • 2nd of six children. Her parents, Martha (Ruszkowski) and Edward Kostyra, were both born in New York. All of her grandparents (Franciszek Kostyra, Helena Krukar, Josef Ruszkowski, and Franciszka Albiniak) were Polish immigrants.
  • In 2006, she donated $5 million to New York's Mt. Sinai Hospital for a center on healthy aging.
  • Sleeps four hours a night with the lights on so when she wakes up she can get right to work.
  • One of Glamour magazine's "Best Dressed College Girls of 1961."
  • Babysat the children of Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, and Gil McDougald, and organized birthday parties for Mantle's sons.
  • Used to work as a model to pay her college tuition.
  • Under investigation by the U.S. Justice Department for suspicion of insider stock trading. She held stock in a company called ImClone and had a close relationship with the firm's CEO. She sold all her stock holdings shortly before the firm suffered a severe financial setback and its stock price plummeted so low as to make the stock virtually worthless. The government, and her stockbroker's assistant, said it was because she got inside information from her CEO friend. Stewart said it was a coincidence and her broker had orders to sell the stock when it fell to a certain price. The investigation is continuing. (October 2002)
  • Due to her criminal record, she was forced to cancel her trip to Nova Scotia to attend an annual pumpkin festival in October 2005. In the past she would have been free to go, but because of her record requires a visa to enter Canada. Days later she was granted a visa in record time thus drawing the ire of critics who say that she was given undue political favor.
  • Took her company public (19 October 1999)
  • Graduated from Barnard College with a degree in History and Architectural History. She got married during her sophomore year.
  • Convicted of four felony charges on 5 March 2004: conspiracy to obstruct justice, make false statements, and commit perjury; false statements (2 counts); obstruction of justice. Result of investigation into her sale of ImClone stock.
  • One daughter: Alexis Stewart (b. 27 September 1965).
  • Used to work as a stockbroker.
  • Was named one of People magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People in the World 1996".
  • Daughter Alexis owns the American Fitness Factory gym in Sag Harbor, New York.
  • Bought her Katonah estate for 16 million dollars
  • She was inducted into the 2011 New Jersey Hall of Fame for her services and contributions to Enterprise. She was inducted on October 27, 2019 in Asbury Park, New Jersey.
  • Her mother, Martha Kostyra, passed away November 16, 2007 at age 93.
  • Friends with Glenn Close, Snoop Dogg, Paul Newman, Rosie O'Donnell, and Mark Burnett.
  • She was paired with rapper Busta Rhymes to present the MTV Video Music Award for Best Dance Video in 1997. It received a fair amount of attention in the press that year, in large part because despite coming from wildly different backgrounds, Busta and Stewart had great on-screen chemistry and worked well off each-other.
  • Graduated from Nutley High School. In a version of the school paper that year, she had already begun her modelling career and hoped to enter the field of broadcast journalism.
  • Her mother is also named Martha.
  • While serving her prison sentence, Martha said that the TV channel that predominantly aired in the facility was "BET" (Black Entertainment Television). If she wanted to catch the news, she had to get up very early before the other inmates. Since her release, she has been unable to watch the hit TV series Orange Is the New Black (2013).
  • Mother of Alexis Stewart and ex-mother-in-law of John R. Cuti.
