The daughter of a minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church
and the sister of '20s band leader Harold Stepteau, Zerita Stepteau
grew up in San Antonio, Texas, where she taught school for a time; she
was active in community theater before and after her marriage to a
local dentist.
