    Dark-haired leading actress of the 1920's and 30's, on stage from 1911. By 1919, regular performances with the ensemble of the Deutschen Theater in Berlin under the direction of Max Reinhardt. Of Jewish ancestry, she was forced to leave Germany during the Nazi era and emigrated via Prague to the United States. She appeared on the New York stage but was only able to secure a few small film roles. Stein had returned to Germany by 1949, resuming her stage career at the Münchner Kammerspielen and at Berlin's Schiller- and Schloßparktheater. Occasional guest appearances on television.
