Jamie Lee Curtis and Nick Castle in Halloween (2018)
Halloween 5: The Killer Inside Me – Wtf Happened to This Unmade Horror Movie
Jamie Lee Curtis and Nick Castle in Halloween (2018)
After missing out on Halloween III, iconic slasher Michael Myers made his triumphant return to the screen in 1988’s Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers – and you can here all about that in the video found Here. Halloween 4 had a shocking cliffhanger ending. Our little heroine Jamie Lloyd picked up a pair of scissors and attacked her adoptive mother, seeming to have inherited the evil killer instinct of her uncle Michael Myers. Some fans were disappointed that the following year’s Halloween 5 (get it Here) brushed aside the idea of Jamie becoming a killer. Maybe they would have been satisfied with the alternative script for the sequel that was written by Shem Bitterman, Halloween 5: The Killer Inside Me. That’s the unmade Halloween sequel we’re digging into with the new episode of the Wtf Happened to This Unmade Horror Movie video series, which you can...

Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers – Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie?
La Nuit des masques (1978)
The Halloween franchise gets a lot of attention during the month of October, and while fans are revisiting the past films and watching the new one, Halloween Ends (read our review Here), in theatres and on the Peacock streaming service, we decided this was a good time to dig into the making of one of the Halloween films with a new episode of our Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? video series. The movie being covered this time around is my personal favorite of the sequels, 1988’s Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (watch it Here) – and you can find out all about the film’s development and production by checking out the video embedded above!

Directed by Dwight H. Little from a screenplay by Alan B. McElroy, Halloween 4 has the following synopsis, lifted from the back of the VHS release:

Ten years ago he changed the face of Halloween.

Halloween Ends: Ranking All Michael Myers Death Scenes at the End
La Nuit des masques (1978)
This article contains Halloween Ends spoilers.

Michael Myers is dead. Again. As the title of Halloween Ends all but guaranteed, the third film in David Gordon Green’s trilogy of sequels to the 1978 original brings the curtain down for good and all on the story of Michael Myers and his war with the babysitter who would not die, Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis).

Granted, Michael Myers has died before, including more than once at the hands of Curtis’ indomitable Laurie Strode—as well as other variations of these characters when they were played by different actors! And yet, Halloween as a movie franchise never seems to end. One might be even so cynical as to assume that Halloween Ends will likewise not be the last word we have with the Shape in a William Shatner mask.

Even so, it marks the almost certain conclusion of Curtis’ participation in the Halloween franchise,...

The Arrow in the Head Show looks back at Halloween 5: is it a trick or a treat?
La Nuit des masques (1978)
Today is all about divisive entries in the Halloween franchise – and there are plenty of them to discuss! We’ve got Halloween Ends in theatres and on the Peacock streaming service (read our review Here), Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers is the subject of our latest Black Sheep video (watch that at This Link), and in the new episode of The Arrow in the Head Show our hosts are looking back at Halloween 5 (watch it Here), which was released back in 1989. What do John “The Arrow” Fallon and Lance Vlcek think of Halloween 5? Watch the video embedded above to find out!

Directed by Dominique Othenin-Girard from a screenplay he wrote with Michael Jacobs (with Shem Bitterman also receiving credit for writing a previous draft), Halloween 5 has the following synopsis:

After lying in a coma for a year, Michael Myers awakens and stalks his way back to his small hometown in Illinois,...

Halloween 5 (1989) – Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie?
Halloween 5 : La Revanche de Michael Myers (1989)
We are now officially in Halloween season, and that means it’s time to start revisiting entries in the Halloween movie franchise. With today’s new episode of the Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? video series, we’re looking into the making of one of the more divisive Halloween sequels, 1989’s Halloween 5 (get it Here). Why did this one turn out the way it did? Find out by watching the video embedded above!

Directed by Dominique Othenin-Girard from a screenplay he crafted with Michael Jacobs and Shem Bitterman, Halloween 5 has the following synopsis:

After lying in a coma for a year, Michael Myers awakens and stalks his way back to his small hometown in Illinois, intent on killing his niece, Jamie, who has been confined to a mental institution since Michael’s last attempt to slay her. Suspecting a psychic link between Michael and Jamie, psychiatrist Dr.

Class of 1989: The Unexpected Emotions and Deadly Obsessions of Halloween 5: The Revenge Of Michael Myers
[We're celebrating some of the most memorable horror and sci-fi movies of 1989 this month in Daily Dead's Class of 89 retrospective series! Check back on Daily Dead throughout the rest of August for more special features celebrating the 30th anniversaries of a wide range of horror and sci-fi films!]

It’s one of the great “what ifs?” in horror cinema: what if Jamie Lloyd (Danielle Harris) had gone on to become the next Haddonfield killer after the shocking ending to Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers? Dressed in a clown costume, standing at the top of the stairs, bloody scissors in hand after stabbing her foster mother, Jamie seemed like a young Michael Myers reincarnated. If she wasn’t ready to take over for her uncle, she surely seemed ready to help him hack and slash his way through another Halloween. But like so many of the great “what ifs?” in the Marvel comic book series What If, the murderous Jamie Lloyd was more of a Halloween night one-shot than a fully realized story.

Flash forward one year after Halloween 4 to the release of Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers in October of 1989. After surviving the deadly...

Malek Akkad Talks New Halloween Film
So the big question everyone has been wondering since the announcement of the next Halloween film was whether or not it would continue on in the universe set up by Rob Zombie. Recently Collider caught up with Malek Akkad at the Saturn Awards, who shed some light on the subject.

“I can’t talk about it too much right now," says Akkad. "It will definitely keep elements and bring in new elements. But I really want to bring it back to kind of like, the classic – because the last one got a little dark – I want to bring it back to the classic Friday night horror film that people will really like.”

When asked about the ill-fated Halloween 3D, which was announced a couple of years back...

"Todd Farmer and Patrick Lussier did a script. The next day after the last one came out, we were back in production for Halloween 3D.

Halloween 4: The Return Of Michael Myers

Stars: Donald Pleasence, Danielle Harris, Ellie Cornell, George P. Wilbur, Beau Starr, Kathleen Kinmont | Written by Alan B. McElroy | Directed by Dwight H. Little

Ten years to the day of that fateful Halloween when the adult Michael Myers first terrorized the sleepy town of Haddonfield, Illinois, the malevolent monster awakes from a decade-long coma, escapes incarceration and returns home. MattFini's Halloween Top 10 Lists: Best Sequels
Saw VI, much to my surprise, turned out to be one of the better films in the franchise, and in honor of it, I thought we’d look at some of the genre’s best sequels. They’re a fact of life when it comes to horror films so here's my take on some of the follow-ups that either usurped the originals or, at least, turned out better than expected.

10. A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)

After the baffling detour into “hey, let’s use Freddy as a metaphor for teenage homosexuality” that was Freddy’s Revenge*, the series realigned itself with this direct follow-up to Wes Craven’s original (with Craven himself contributing to script duties).

Part 3 boasts an imaginative story, good characters (need I remind anyone of Kincaid?), and one of the most memorable locales in the franchise. Director Charles (later Chuck, for some reason) Russell...

Film review: 'Hoodlum'
This gangster effort from director Bill Duke ("Deep Cover", "A Rage in Harlem") brings to light a little-known character and a fascinating chapter in black mobster lore. It also benefits from excellent performances and a superb visual evocation of the period. But the picture suffers from haphazard pacing and excessive length; not quite good enough to qualify as quality drama nor kinetic enough to satisfy thrill-seeking action-movie audiences, it faces an uphill road commercially.

Chris Brancato's screenplay details the story of the violent 1934 Harlem turf war between Dutch Schultz (Tim Roth) and Bumpy Johnson (Laurence Fishburne), a real-life gangster who fought to maintain control of Harlem's numbers rackets. Also figuring prominently in the plot are such real figures as Italian gangster Lucky Luciano (Andy Garcia); the exotic Stephanie St. Clair (Cicely Tyson), Bumpy's mentor and queen of the numbers; and Manhattan prosecutor Thomas Dewey (William Atherton), shown here as being in cahoots with the mob.

The film's chief distinction is bringing to life the unheralded Johnson, who is depicted as a tough-as-nails, hardened ex-con who was also a chess aficionado, an amateur poet, a gallant ladies' man and a Robin Hood who poured much of his illegal gains back into the community. Whether this characterization is true is open to debate -- there is not much documentation on Johnson.

He is nonetheless a highly intriguing central character, and Fishburne plays him with his usual brand of physical grace and restrained power.

As his nemesis, Roth invests his portrayal of Schultz with the same flair and humor that he brought to his Oscar-nominated turn in "Rob Roy", and he provides some of the film's most entertaining moments. In a smaller role, Garcia is much quieter as Luciano, while Tyson brings some real shadings to her St. Clair, balancing her portrayal with a canny mixture of toughness and tenderness.

Vanessa Williams, playing Johnson's fictional love interest, brings her classic beauty and poise to a confusingly written role.

The many supporting performers play their gangster roles with colorful abandon, with particularly sterling work coming from Chi McBride as Johnson's cousin and partner in crime; Loretta Devine as a devoted, good-hearted girlfriend; Clarence Williams III as Dutch's black enforcer; Richard Bradford as a crooked cop; and Paul Benjamin as the ominous-voiced Whispers.

Particularly fun are Mike Starr and Beau Starr as a pair of large-bodied, machete-wielding hit men whose mantra is, "Let's do some damage". Their scenes -- including an encounter with Schultz (hearing their price, the gangster laments about the inflationary cost of a hit) and a harrowing assassination attempt on Johnson -- are the highlights of the film.

Despite its superb production design (numerous locations in Chicago doubled for 1930s-era Harlem), evocative musical score by Elmer Bernstein and colorful cast of characters, the film never quite ignites, settling shortly after its beginning into a repetitive series of violent shootouts and profanity-laden verbal encounters.

With the exception of a couple of scenes that approach a Tarantino level of humor, the screenplay never takes off. And with its 142-minute running time -- far more than the story requires -- "Hoodlum" is eventually more wearying than exciting.
