Image

Splendid Film has pre-bought the film for the Benelux, Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Maas returns to the director’s chair for the sequel while veteran Dutch actor Huub Stapel reprises his role as detective Eric Visser, who pursued a serial killer through the Dutch canals three decades ago. Dick Maas Turned His Own Elevator Horror Movie ‘The Lift’ into ‘The Shaft’ [Revenge of the Remakes]
Image
While horror remakes are inevitable, its rare that international filmmakers are hired to helm American remakes of their originals. Even fewer filmmakers get to make not one, but Two movies about sentient killer elevators (Killovators? Murdervators?). Lucky for us, Dick Maas laughs in the face of convention. His feature debut, The Lift, is a zany 1980s concoction of A.I. paranoia and cable-attached monsters, kickstarting his career as an odd duckling who cherishes a proper B-Movie script. Movies like Amsterdamned, Prey (aka Uncaged), and Sint would further cement his audacious brand of metropolitan nightmares that treat midnight movie storylines with higher prestige, only adding to the Dutchman’s legacy.

Maas’ The Lift might seem like a strange choice for an American remake—a procedural thriller about corrupt elevator companies—but it’s hailed as one of the Netherlands’ premiere horror imports. Imagine an episode of The Twilight Zone with more...

Image
Sales

International sales agent Incredible Film has secured global distribution rights to “Amsterdamned II,” the sequel to Dick Maas’ 1988 cult classic, “Amsterdamned.” Veteran Dutch actor Huub Stapel reprises his role as detective Eric Visser, who once pursued a serial killer through the Dutch canals three decades ago, as he is brought back from retirement by a revelation that shakes him to his core. In the sequel, also directed by Maas, Visser and fellow detective Tara Lee fight against an evil that threatens them and the city of Amsterdam.

The film is a coproduction from the Netherlands’ 2CFilm and Parachute Pictures and Belgium’s Potemkino. Production is set to begin later this year, with release scheduled for 2025, in time for the city of Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary.

Daniëlle Raaphorst, CEO of Incredible Film, said: “Three decades ago, the chilling horror ‘Amsterdamned’ gripped audiences around the world. Now, we are delighted to be representing the sequel.

Overlook 2017 Review: In Prey, A Lion Stalks Amsterdam
(In the Vondelpark, the mighty Vondelpark, the lion sleeps tonight...) For decades now, director Dick Maas has been bucking trends in Dutch cinema. "We should focus on art-house, we can't compete with Hollywood!" has been the industry mantra here since the seventies. Yet time and time again, Dick has proven the industry wrong. His 1983 film The Lift was a sensation, won international acclaim and made household names of himself and his lead actor Huub Stapel. A few years later, he made the raunchy anti-social comedy Flodder and brought large scale destruction and stunts to the Netherlands, together with the start of a very successful franchise. Horror and comedy. Thrills. Dick Maas has always unabashedly, unapologetically gone for providing entertainment to his audiences. And he...

DVD Review: Saint
Saint (Sint)

Stars: Huub Stapel, Egbert Jan Weeber, Caro Lenssen, Bert Luppes | Written and Directed by Dick Maas

Ah Christmas, a time for getting together with family and loved ones, sharing gifts, enjoying a good meal and getting slaughtered by an evil St. Nicholas… Wait, hold on. That last one doesn’t sound right. Getting slaughtered at Christmas and not in the good (drunk) sense of the word? That doesn’t happen right? But wait, I forgot, this is the movies – if there’s a holiday that can be exploited by a serial killing psycho it will be!

Valentines Day (My Bloody Valentine), New Years Day (New Year’s Evil), even birthdays (Bloody Birthday), filmmakers really know how to spoil the festivities. Christmas is no different, we’ve had films such as Black Christmas, Christmas Evil, and Silent Night, Deadly Night and its sequels, but all those films have seen...

Interview: Dick Maas, director of 'Saint'
The films of cult Dutch director Dick Maas are as notorious for their difficulty to see as for their often graphic depictions of murder and mayhem. Released today on DVD, his latest effort Saint (2010) - starring Huub Stapel, Bert Luppes and Egbert Jan Weeber - gives a new and murderous twist to the seasonal legend of St Nicholas. CineVue caught up with the director, and discovered that some of his personal views can be as controversial as his films.

DVD Review: 'Saint'
★★★★☆ If you have any experience of Dutch director Dick Maas' previous work, you will most likely have been eagerly anticipating his latest schlocker Saint (2010). If, however, this is the first time you have heard his name, his homage to 1980s slasher films - starring Huub Stapel, Bert Luppes and Egbert Jan Weeber - is as good an introduction as any to this individualistic filmmaker's take on the slice 'n' dice genre.

Sint (Saint) and a Killer Santa Coming Down the Chimney: A Movie Review
Director/writer: Dick Maas.

Cast: Huub Stapel, Egbert Jan Weeber and Caro Lenssen.

Release Date: 31 October 2011.

Holiday gift giving can't come any sooner than in Sint, and no, Halloween is not the season being referred to. December 5th is a big day celebrated in parts of Europe in honour of the real Saint Nicholas, where he drops off gifts to children and everyone praises him for his generosity.

In the Netherlands, however, that has a different take. A meaner Saint will ravage the city on December 5th when there is a full moon. This monstrosity only appears about once every 32 years. In the past, this bishop is behaved very much like King John from Robin Hood, where he is out to rob from the poor. He made a decree where he would take a high amount of penance and taxes from the citizens.

On the very same night, the townspeople...

Slashing through the snow with Saint Nick
The Christmas-themed horror film Saint Nick, formerly Saint, is getting a DVD release on December 20, 2011 from Mpi.

St. Niklas, a bishop fallen out of grace, travels in the middle ages with his gang of robbers and thieves through the countryside, raping, plundering and killing. When villagers take the law into their own hands and murder the bloodthirsty bishop and his thugs by setting the ship on which they travel ablaze, Niklas vows revenge. Now every time there is a full moon on December 5th, the date that he died, something that on average takes place every 36 years, St. Niklas and his helpers will rise from the dead and take revenge in a horrible way.

Full of creative yuletide horror, Sint is a fun chiller that follows local teen Frank as he sets out on a bloody, high-energy battle to save Amsterdam from the wrathful “Sinterklaas” and his minions. It’s...

Holiday Slasher Sint Gets a DVD Date and a New Title: Saint Nick!
Dick Maas’ yuletide slasher Sint (review here) stirred up quite a bit of controversy when it was released in its home country, the Netherlands. Just looking at the DVD artwork with the new Americanized title I fully expect to hear about some angry American parents after they mistakenly pick this one up for their kiddies.

IFC Films gave Sint a very limited theatrical and VOD release in the Us recently. The DVD being distributed by Mpi will arrive on DVD shelves just a few days prior to Christmas on December 20th under the new title Saint Nick.

As you can see from the American DVD artwork, it doesn’t fully spell it out for viewers that this is a violent slasher movie about a psychopathic bishop who returns from the netherworld every December 5th when there’s a full moon to hack and slash and send his black-faced minions, the Black Petes,...

Director Dick Maas talks about the murderous St. Nicolas in Sint
Just hear those sleigh bells jingling, ring ting tingling too. Come on, it’s lovely weather for a sleigh ride together with you…It’s going to be that time again: Christmas, or if you’re from Holland, on December 5th it’s the Sinterklaas tradition (Sinterklaas-avond – here). If you’re rogue Dutch filmmaker Dick Maas, you’re sick of this crap and that my friends is the fuel behind Saint (Sint), his new horror film about the Sinterklaas tradition.

The film darkly and humorously distorts the popular traditions of Sinterklaas and portrays him as a ghost who murders large numbers of people when his annual celebration night coincides with a full moon. It’s not unlike many of our own Yuletide slashers as seen in Christmas Evil and Silent Night, Deadly Night, and director Dick Maas takes some time away from the Tribeca Film Festival to talk with Killer Film about the film,...

Sint is One Santa Looking to Give the Gift of Death While Slashing Records
Remember all that hubbub about Silent Night, Deadly Night here in the States when it first came out? Parents were up in arms because it had a killer dressed as Santa Claus. Ah, stupidity! How we love when you rear your head! The Dutch seem to have no such problems. In fact their new killer Christmas flick Sint is breaking records overseas.

According to Variety distributor A-Film claims Sint's opening weekend set a record for a Dutch movie rated 16 and above, dethroning Paul Verhoeven's Black Book.

Figures released Thursday by the Dutch Film Distributors' Association show Sint easily scored the biggest opening week for a Dutch film so far in 2010, taking E901,132 ($1.3 million) off 96 screens.

Its box office also stands up to U.S. product, beating the opening weeks of Jackass 3D and Due Date, while burying recent genre releases such as Piranha 3D and Paranormal Activity 2.

Eep! -- Mill Valley Film Festival -- Small, birdlike child takes to the air, as does the film's star

Eep (because that'd what she says) or Birdie (because that's a girl's name that aptly...
