In 1995 he wrote the book "Permanent Midnight" about his out of control heroin habit. The book later became a film Permanent Midnight (1998) starring Ben Stiller as Stahl.
Would shoot up heroin in the sound stage toilet when working in the writing room of the tv show ALF.
