His partner since the 1960s has been Doctor Who scriptwriter Victor Pemberton. In the 1990s they formed a production company which produced television documentaries, including one on comedian Benny Hill. In recent years they have retired to Spain.

He started out as a child actor at the age of 11, starring in the title role of the radio play "Just William" (1948). He returned to radio in his later years as a producer of radio plays for the BBC.

He was the elder brother of Jeremy Spenser.

Following his success as a child-actor, he was lined up to play parts in Anna Karénine (1948) and Noblesse oblige (1949), which would use some of the same sets. However, a growth spurt made him unsuitable for the roles, and he suggested his brother, Jeremy Spenser, three years his junior, instead.

His father was Sri Lankan, and his mother was an Italian musician and teacher.
