The Writer Behind A Clint Eastwood Movie Found The Final Product Distasteful
Image
"Dirty Harry" debuted in 1971 amid considerable controversy. Clint Eastwood's maverick cop Harry Callahan played by his own rules which simultaneously electrified and appalled audiences at the time. Director Don Siegel had, depending on your point of view, created a celebration of police overreach, a harmless action fantasy, or a grave warning against the dangers of flouting the rules in favor of one's own predilections.

In the film, Callahan tracks and apprehends the Scorpio Killer (Andrew Robinson), a serial murderer with his own predilection for shooting innocent people from rooftops. Eastwood's loose canon isn't exactly a stickler for the rules, and has no qualms about bending the law in order to get his man, thereby stoking the controversy that followed the film's release. But Siegel also made an effort to draw a parallel between the barbarity of the serial killer and Harry's own proclivity for violence. In time, "Dirty Harry...

Salem's Lot Remake: Everything You Need To Know
Image
There have already been two TV miniseries, but a new theatrical adaptation of Stephen King's novel Salem's Lot was brought to life by horror maven James Wan in 2024. Salem's Lot centers on Ben Mears, an author who returns to his childhood hometown with plans to both write a book about the local haunted house and try to exorcise his various personal demons. Starsky and Hutch's David Soul played Ben in the 1979 CBS TV miniseries adaptation of Salem's Lot, which many regard as a creepy classic.

In 2004, Salem's Lot became another two-part miniseries, this time for cable network TNT, and starring Rob Lowe as Ben. However, it would take another 20 years for the next adaptation to surface, with the release of Salem's Lot on Max in late 2024. Following the basic framework of King's novel, creepy vampires and all, the movie was put through the wringer by Warner Bros. before it was finally,...

10 Best Clint Eastwood Movie Quotes of All Time, Ranked
Image
Clint Eastwood soared to fame during the 1960s, when his role as the Man With No Name in Sergio Leone's Dollars Trilogy turned him into the new face of the Western genre. In the years since, the actor-director has tackled almost every genre in film, from comedy and adventure to thriller and drama. Along the way, he's built a reputation as one of Hollywood's quintessential tough guys, which has been reflected through various iconic quotes in his various roles.

Clint Eastwood has been given more one-liners and tough-guy quotes than even the best action heroes, with some of his movies producing dozens of memorable quips and jabs. Ranging from insults to warnings, the character is at his best when playing a gun-toting lawman or Western antihero, and those roles have been responsible for his most enduring lines. As Hollywood's resident badass, few people have delivered as many great lines...

Salem’s Lot (1979) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
Salem’s Lot has a legendary status not unlike the vampire creatures that are the chief antagonists therein. While we are finally getting the newest movie adaptation this month after what seemed like an eternity in development and then an unceremonious shelving, the original continues to have a cult classic aura around it. There was a second TV miniseries that came out on TNT in 2004 but the quality of that one varies depending on who you talk to. Even with all the cache that the original miniseries brings to the table, it had been years since I had watched it. It deserved a revisit and make no mistake, this addition to the King cinematic universe needed a remake more than nearly anything else he has put out.

Originally Salem’s Lot was going to be a theatrical experience but Warner Brothers, who had purchased the rights, had a hard time settling on the story and the personnel.

As one of the worst horror movie sequels ever made, youre forgiven if youve managed to wipe the memory of A Return to Salems Lot from your brain. Directed by Larry Cohen, the film is an unremarkable follow-up to Tobe Hoopers 1979 TV miniseries, and features an anthropologist and his son making their way to Salems Lot only to discover that its been taken over by vampires. This jumbled continuation received a limited theatrical release in 1987 before hitting VHS a year later, and now its yours to rediscover this Halloween when it makes its way to its new streaming home.

Starring Michael Moriarty, Ricky Addison, Samuel Fuller, and Tara Reid in her feature film debut, the sequel was a critical failure on every level, not even reaching camp status.

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From The 1979 Salem's Lot Miniseries
Image
Before "Salem's Lot" returned to the zeitgeist with a highly-anticipated reboot movie, the Stephen King classic was a miniseries that shook the world. Directed by "Texas Chain Saw Massacre" mastermind Tobe Hooper, the two-part 1979 series was event TV at its spookiest.

The original "Salem's Lot" limited series has never been among the best King adaptations out there, but it holds a unique place in pop culture history thanks to its status as one of the earliest on-screen takes on a King book — plus some truly frightening moments. Several members of the show's sprawling ensemble cast, including David Soul, James Mason, Lance Kerwin, and vamp actor Reggie Nalder, have passed away in the decades since "Salem's Lot" first beamed its way into our collective consciousness. Of the actors who are still with us, several have gone on to award-winning careers in film and television, while others retired or found fulfillment in other careers.

“Salem’s Lot” Will Skip Theaters to Stream Exclusively

The long-in-development film adaptation of Stephen King’s “Salem’s Lot” is being made, after all, but will no longer premiere in theaters, opting for a Max-exclusive streaming premiere this year with an official date to be announced later.

Originally intended for a September 2022 theatrical release, New Line Cinema pushed the film to 2023 citing the Covid-19 pandemic shutdown for delays before removing it from its release calendar entirely. King’s 1975 novel was first adapted for the screen with CBS’s 1979 miniseries starring David Soul.

“Salem’s Lot” is written and directed by Gary Dauberman (“Annabelle”). The new version will see Ben Mears (Lewis Pullman) return to his childhood home of Jerusalem’s Lot looking to come up with an idea for a new novel but discovers his hometown’s residents are becoming vampires.

The ensemble also features Alfre Woodard, Makenzie Leigh, Bill Camp, Spencer Treat Clark,...

One Of David Soul's Earliest Roles Was On Star Trek, Eight Years Before Starsky & Hutch
Image
The "Star Trek" episode "The Apple" contained one of show creator Gene Roddenberry's favorite tropes: a remote, agrarian species living in harmony with nature, overseen by an ineffable technological marvel. In "The Apple," the Edenic planet of Gamma Trianguli VI is the home of a sexually innocent, childlike species that is granted their every wish by an all-powerful computer called Vaal. Vaal appears to be a giant snake-like head carved into the rock, but the Enterprise discovers that it is a machine intelligence that has kept the locals in a perpetual childlike state. They are immortal, but also have never had to work, nor are they allowed to "touch" (that is: have sex). Naturally, it will be up to Kirk (William Shatner) and the crew of the Enterprise to destroy Vaal and teach the aliens that growing up is necessary, and that having sex is okay and super-fun.
