The 1999 cinematic classic, The Mummy, is an iconic piece of film — and for good reason. Everyone has their own logic behind what made the Stephen Sommers-helmed adventure flick such a hit, but up there at the top is certainly the performances carried out by its leading cast, which included Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, and Oded Fehr. The legends about what Fraser went through and what damage he did to his body in order to bring the blockbuster to screens could make a movie of their own. Now, thanks to one of his castmates, we have a better understanding of how things ended up that way for the actor.

Back in 2017, The Mummy attempted to launch the Dark Universe, a cinematic monster franchise that would eventually combine all the classic monsters. Despite the star power of Tom Cruise, it crashed and burned almost immediately, leaving all those future crossovers drifting away in the breeze. While speaking at Fan Expo Denver (via Collider), Brendan Fraser was asked what his version of The Mummy had over the reboot.
“I know Tom Cruise tried to make his movie and it ain’t easy! We all know how hard this movie is to make,” Fraser said. “With the exception of three [The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor], the thing with all of these films is that, at least it was fun, it was a thrill ride, and you wanted to do it again.“

Rudyard Kipling first published his novel "The Jungle Book" in 1894, and its sequel, "The Second Jungle Book," the following year. The books followed the adventures of a boy named Mowgli, a five-year-old who becomes lost in the jungles of India and who is taken in and raised by the local wildlife. He is taught the ways of the jungle, mostly by a benevolent panther named Bagheera. He also is given some more raucous advice from a bear named Baloo, and is taught to be wary of the vicious tiger, Shere Khan.
Most schoolchildren have read one or both of Kipling's "Jungle Book" novels, and it has been adapted to film multiple times. Director Zoltan Korda directed a rather fine 1946 Technicolor version, although more popular to today's audiences is the 1967 animated film directed by Wolfgang Reitherman. In 2000, Hugh Jackman took on the role of Wolverine in X-Men. Four years later, the fan-favorite actor embodied another iconic character, Van Helsing, in the action-horror movie of the same name.
Peacock subscribers will soon be able to stream Van Helsing. The Universal Monsters movie arrives on the platform on June 1. Released in 2004, Van Helsing stars Jackman as the famed monster slayer as he is dispatched to Transylvania to assist Anna Valerious (Kate Beckinsale) in defeating Count Dracula (Richard Roxburgh), who has formed an unholy alliance with Dr. Frankenstein's monster (Shuler Hensley) and is hell-bent on exacting a centuries-old curse on her family. Despite receiving largely negative reviews from critics, Van Helsing was a modest box office hit, grossing just over $300 million worldwide.

Once upon a time, Universal was prepping its own Avengers-style cinematic universe featuring their famous classic movie monsters. The studio started making some movies as they planned films that would make up the Dark Universe, and initially positioned Dracula Untold(2014) with star Luke Evans as the first film before officially making Tom Cruise's The Mummy the Iron Man of the Dark Universe. There was a magazine cover featuring an A-list cast who would be headlining films like Bride of Frankensteinand The Invisible Man. But then The Mummy opened in June 2017 and it bombed. Badly. And the brakes were hit on the Dark Universe. However, now it's a streaming hit on Hulu, sitting at number six on the streamer's Top 10 chart.

Since the Silent Era of cinema, monsters like werewolves, vampires, and aliens have given audiences some brilliant movies, with recent movies like Nosferatu and Blumhouse's The Wolf Man delivering some great terror. Using isolation to ramp up the fear, these films offer everything from jump scares to non-stop suspense and paranoia as audiences are left to watch as characters are hunted by creatures of the night.
Monsters can bring more to a story than simple horror, with many of the best monster movies exploring themes of morality, religion, and human emotion, using creatures as metaphors. From remakes of beloved B-movies to modern reinterpretations of influential literature, these movies helped make modern horror cinema the powerhouse that it is. For those who loved Blumhouse's modernization of The Wolf Man, there are plenty of other great films to watch.

Brendan Fraser saved the world from mummies twice. How can someone follow up success like that? By saving the world from mummies a third time! When he signed on for another Mummy sequel, he was working with a new director and new writers. Some of his co-stars were recast. Some were absent. But his task remained the same: stop the rampage of a power-hungry walking corpse. That’s what he set out to do in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor… and it’s time to figure out What Happened to This Horror Movie.
Fraser played treasure hunter Rick O’Connell in the 1999 reboot of the Universal Monsters classic The Mummy and its 2001 sequel The Mummy Returns. Both movies were written and directed by Stephen Sommers – but Sommers had no intention of directing a third Mummy film. After making the second one, he was ready to work on smaller projects.

In 2024, we have no need to try and make vampires happen. They have already happened for at least a century, and they're very much still happening: stories about vampires have saturated just about every medium there is. Weirdly, though, we may have to work a little harder to make the vampire happen again — as in the most legendary bloodsucker of all: Dracula.
In fairness, it may not be Dracula himself whose popularity is waning, but rather movies about him. Ever since his screen debut in the lost film "Dracula's Death" in 1921, barely a decade has gone by without some iteration of the Count turning up in cinemas, which is partially why the character has undergone so many various iterations. Like all fictional creations who've been built to last, Dracula endures by embracing change. Yet there can always been too much of a good thing; the last several films to prominently...

In 1999, the Stephen Sommers movie The Mummy, featuring Brendan Fraser, killed it at the box office. Banking over $400M and entertaining audiences with its action-adventure story, the film proved there was an appetite for mummy-related projects for arguably the first time since the 1930s. This interest was somewhat surprising due to a massive bomb released the year prior: Russell Mulcahy's Tale of the Mummy — yes, the director put his name in the official title — starring a babyfaced Gerard Butler in his third ever feature. Despite their similar topic, The Mummy and Tale of the Mummy couldn't be more different. So, why was one film so successful and the other so... not?

The Mummy franchise has long been a fan-favorite one, even though some of its installments may not have been that well-received by fans. Since 1999, the film series under Stephen Sommers has been doing everything in its power to leave fans absolutely baffled and captivated to the core. Then there was Tom Cruise’s titular film from 2017, which, well, wasn’t all that loved by viewers.

However, even after the release of so many installments, with some of them being critical blockbusters while others cease to grab the opportunities perfectly, a new installment from the saga is currently in the works. And this one might as well make one really major Brendan Fraser-Tom Cruise scenario a reality by bringing back both actors to the fan-favorite franchise.

A little over seven years after the last attempt to reboot the property failed, Blumhouse have revealed they're working on a new Mummy movie. The horror franchise first launched in 1932 and was part of the Universal Classic Monsters collection, with Boris Karloff portraying the titular entity before passing the reins on to Tom Tyler, Lon Chaney Jr. and Eddie Parker. The years since have seen two rebooted versions of The Mummy franchise, beginning with the Brendan Fraser-led movies from Stephen Sommers, which also included the Scorpion King spinoffs, and Tom Cruise's failed 2017 reboot meant to launch the interconnected Dark Universe.

While Dwayne Johnson made his big screen premiere in Brendan Fraser's The Mummy Returns, he had a surprisingly limited amount of screentime considering he was the villain, and he was The Rock. As Mathayus of Akkad, he was also subjected to one of the most awkward bits of early CGI in film history. Nonetheless, audiences smelled what he was cooking and took to the actor's cinematic charisma, developed after years of wrestling, and he was very quickly thrust into leading man status the next year.

2002's epic The Scorpion King reinvented the titular character after his debut in The Mummy Returns. The Scorpion King depicts the ancient origins of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's character, "Mathayus of Akkad," who first appeared in 2001's The Mummy Returns as a villain. Like any other genre, fantasy movies can include dark and intense themes that make the mystical elements of the story terrifying. Whether it's through a genuinely frightening villain or serious plot points that make the stakes all too real, these narratives intend to leave the audience thinking about what they've seen and how it relates to the real world. The use of metaphor and allusion to true events is what makes fantasy such a popular genre, especially darker works of fiction that push the viewer to interrogate complex conversations about human nature.
While many darker additions to the genre are the best R-rated fantasy movies, these films don't need to warrant an R-rating to have a frightening and serious tone. Explicit violence and gore contribute to the darkness of a project, but there are many other ways that implied action and terror can be just as effective. Darkness can also be defined by tough choices,...

Actor Brendan Fraser may be best known for his work in The Mummy franchise, or for Millennials, his memorable turn as Link in Encino Man (1992), but it was his performance in 2022s The Whale that earned him the Best Actor Oscar in 2023. Starting November 1, The Whale will stream on Netflix. In addition to Frasers Oscar-winning performance, the film also took home the Academy Award for Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling in 2023.
In The Whale, Fraser is nearly unrecognizable as he is playing a morbidly obese, gay English professor named Charlie who tries to reconnect with his estranged daughter. The movie is based on a play of the same name by Samuel D. Hunter, and chronicles Charlie, whose health is on the decline, as he tries to get his daughter, Ellie, played by Sadie Sink (Stranger Things) to spend time with him by giving her money.

In 2004, Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale teamed up for an action-adventure picture that doubled as a love-letter to the original Universal Monsters franchise. Directed by Stephen Sommers (who had recently resurrected The Mummy), Van Helsing combined Dracula and Frankenstein with The Wolf Man and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, offering audiences a new sort of action hero to root for in Jackman's Gabriel Van Helsing. Universal had high hopes for Van Helsing, and at one point even developed a television spin-off set in the region of Transylvania. But what happened? Well, let's just say box-office receipts matter after all.

Rotten Tomatoes scores are an important thing to consider when it comes to a movie's marketing campaign. The website is a review aggregator, meaning it weighs up reviews of the film and displays them as a percentage. And that percentage can make or break a movie.
However, some movies get poor Rotten Tomatoes scores but are still, at their core, very fun movies. They're proof that audiences shouldn't prioritize the reviews of a film, they should simply trust their own judgment and try to have fun. After all, many people's all-time favorite films were utterly slammed by critics when they first came out.

Adventure movies have been one of the most successful and beloved corners of cinema since the success of franchises like Indiana Jones. The thrill of adventure dates back to the dawn of Hollywood, which pulled from novels and characters like Zorro, Tarzan, Sinbad, and Robin Hood to make fun stories. There's no denying that The Mummy allowed the concept of a summer blockbuster to evolve. The beloved classic is now receiving impressive viewership numbers on Peacock following the film's arrival on the streamer, allowing fans to dive into the epic tale written and directed by Stephen Sommers. The Mummy earned $417 million (not adjusted for inflation) during its original theatrical run. Even while sharing the season with Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, the story about a group of heroes fighting against an ancient threat proved to be a major critical and financial hit.

For over a decade, a reboot of the classic Universal Monsters property The Mummy languished in development hell. The project was originally intended to be a dark, low budget horror story. Then executives decided it should be a larger budgeted adventure film. So in 1999, writer/director Stephen Sommers delivered a version of The Mummy that was packed with action, adventure, humor… and some creepy mummy stuff. It was a massive box office success – so, of course, a sequel was put on the fast track to production. And now we’re going to look back more than twenty years to find out What the F*ck Happened to The Mummy Returns.
Getting the ‘99 Mummy to the screen had been a long, painful process. Many different writers and directors had come and gone before Stephen Sommers got involved. Getting The Mummy Returns made was much easier. And the process began on the first movie’s opening weekend.

Hugh Jackman's Van Helsing has soared back into popularity, making its way into the top ten on Max's streaming platform. This 2004 action-horror film stars Jackman as Gabriel Van Helsing, a legendary monster hunter tasked with eliminating iconic supernatural threats like Count Dracula, the Wolfman, and Frankenstein's monster. Directed by Stephen Sommers, the film presents a reimagined version of the classic character Van Helsing, originally from Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula. In Stoker's story, Abraham Van Helsing is a scholarly doctor and vampire hunter who leads the charge against Dracula. In Sommers' adaptation, the character is transformed into a more action-oriented figure, armed with an array of gadgets and weapons to combat various dark creatures. The movie delivers a blend of gothic horror, fast-paced action, and special effects, making it a visually thrilling experience.

In the very first action set piece of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, a chopper gets shot out of the sky, crashing in front of a truck carrying heroes that includes Duke (Channing Tatum) and Ripcord (Marlon Wayans). The scene which follow would set the tone for the rest of movie. After that fiery explosion, there is an all-out assault on the soldiers, who do their best to repel the black-clad Cobra troopers. Alas, the heroes’ weapons are no match for the terrorists’ superior tech.
A funny thing, however, is also occurring in this scene—an element which borders on distracting. The camera focuses less on the carnage circling around the heroes and more on the recognizable IP of their vehicles and uniforms. The lens flies past the nose of the Cobra ship attacking Duke and Ripcord in order to instead highlight the high-tech missiles on its side. Each...

Alien: Romulus is one of the most anticipated horror movies of 2024. It is directed by Fede Alvarez, the visionary behind hits like Evil Dead (2013) and Don't Breathe (2016). The film has an all-star cast of newcomers including Isabela Merced, Cailee Spaeny, Archie Renaux and David Johnson. To top it off, Alien director Ridley Scott is a producer and James Cameron (the director of Aliens) is serving as an "unofficial consultant" for the film. The trailers, meanwhile, are horrifying and increase anticipation for this new addition to the Alien franchise.
Fans of the Alien franchise are eagerly awaiting the release of Romulus on August 16, 2024. While they wait, there are plenty of similarly claustrophobic creature features to catch up on. After Steven Spielberg's Raiders of the Lost Ark revived the action-adventure genre in the early 1980s, bands of rip-offs and wannabes materialized in the years that followed. As Harrison Ford continued to play the adventuring archeologist Indiana Jones, there was no shortage of folks who aimed to capitalize on the brand themselves. When Universal remade The Mummy with director Stephen Sommers, it felt more akin to Indy's adventures than the original horror classic. It's no surprise then that television giants, such as the TNT network, would fire up their own Indiana Jones-like escapades, but what was surprising was how unique they actually were. We're talking about The Librarian trilogy of television films that ran on TNT between 2004 and 2008, each one starring Noah Wyle as the occasionally heroic brainiac Flynn Carsen, aka The Librarian. If you thought librarians were boring before, you won't after this.

The Mummy may be the next Universal Monsters story to be revisited. A new installment of the franchise is reportedly in the works, but it will be going further back in the past.
Film insider Daniel Richtman has reported that a prequel to The Mummy is now in development at Universal. Also noted is that Wes Tooke is writing the screenplay. It's not clear, however, which version of The Mummy this new film will be serving as a prequel. Given the cult status of the 1999 version with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, that film seems to be more likely than the 2017 reboot starring Tom Cruise, which was very heavily panned. Potentially, the film could even be a prequel to the classic 1932 film which starred Boris Karloff as the titular monster. In any case, the news hasn't been officially confirmed at this time.

Brendan Fraser's near-death experience on The Mummy set was exaggerated, claims the film's director Stephen Sommers. Fraser's eagerness to perform led to a dangerous situation, but the crew was ready to step in if necessary. Fraser also faced real danger with snakes on set, adding to the adventurous nature of filming The Mummy.
The story of Brendan Fraser nearly dying on the set of The Mummy has become something of a Hollywood legend. But, according to the film's director, Stephen Sommers, the story has become greatly exaggerated. The story goes that, during a hanging scene in the film, Fraser blacked out. The actor described the moment on the British pannel show, There's Something About Movies, saying:
"I was on a platform with the rope around my neck, and I remember the camera came around. I thought 'I'm gonna make this look really good', so I sort of took a few deep breaths,...

Horror films are designed to be exciting. The scares tend to work better with a surge of adrenaline, and the same techniques that feed action movies can make for very effective horror with just a few tweaks. Certain tropes readily work with both, such as chase scenes.
It's no surprise that many movies embrace both genres, and some of the greatest genre films stand almost perfectly balanced between the two. Action-horror movies often make a great introduction to scary movies for newcomers. The best of them also hold up well to multiple viewings by remaining as exciting and enjoyable the 20th time as the first. They include a number of classics by some of the most noted directors in the medium.

Brendan Fraser's dangerous stunt during The Mummy knocked him out but didn't stop his dedication to the role. Fraser insisted he wear a noose during a stunt, rather than let a dummy do it. However, it knocked him unconscious for ten seconds. The Mummy remains popular to this day, sparking a franchise that could still be continued today.
As The Mummy turns 25, director Stephen Sommers reflects on the franchise and a dangerous stunt that knocked out star Brendan Fraser. The Mummy opened in 1999 to mediocre reviews, but it grossed over $400 million worldwide and spawned two sequels, a reboot, and a spinoff. The sequel, 2001s The Mummy Returns, also directed by Sommers, received even lower reviews but still made $443 million worldwide. The spinoff, The Scorpion King, starring Dwayne Johnson, didnt perform as well, scoring a 41% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics and only making $180 million worldwide.
