House II: la deuxième histoire (1987)
After taking a look back at House II: The Second Story (a favorite of mine since childhood), House of 1000 Corpses (which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year), the awesomeness of Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, the leg smashing in the Stephen King adaptation Misery, three separate moments from John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China, the “Jason vs. Tina” battle in Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, the “all hell breaks loose” sequence from the start of Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead remake, the opening sequence of Pitch Black, a cool moment from The Crow, a memorable shark attack from Jaws 2, a creepy moment from Lost Highway, the climactic factory chase sequence from Child’s Play 2, and the “Stigmata Martyr” dance scene from Night of the Demons, JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek is continuing his The Best Scene video series – and...

Original Mighty Ducks Star Suits Back Up In Nostalgic Photos
Image
One of the original Mighty Ducks stars has returned to suit up again in new nostalgic photos. The Mighty Ducks is a 1992 comedy about an underdog hockey team that is coached by a lawyer who is forced to do community service. The Mighty Ducks was directed by Stephen Herek and featured a leading cast including Emilio Estevez, Joss Ackland, Lane Smith, Heidi King, Josef Sommer, Joshua Jackson, Elden Henson, and Shaun Weiss. The film had two follow-up sequels, with D2: The Mighty Ducks in 1994 and D3: The Mighty Ducks in 1996.

Now, a post from Weiss gives a nostalgic look at The Mighty Ducks. In the images, Weiss wears his hockey jersey and helmet, and in the last shot, he is in the rink again. He gives a shocked expression to the camera in the selfie image. In his nostalgic caption, Weiss wrote "Last time I skated was the final day...

Nobody’s Fool

Director Robert Benton and Paul Newman come through with an extremely pleasing small town story. Snowy North Bath New York would seem a pit of failures big and small, until we begin to appreciate its social web of ‘support relationships’ that fill in for broken family connections. Newman’s injured laborer can’t get a fair shake, but he begins to realize the importance of his neighbors and his grandson. The comic conflicts are wholly believable, with Jessica Tandy, Bruce Willis, Melanie Griffith, Pruitt Taylor Vince and Philip Seymour Hoffman on board: this one is Mellow and Mature (and a little racy) without succumbing to Hallmark TV drama sentimentality.

Warren Beatty’s show is a beautiful, one of a kind epic. Never mind that it is sharply critical of John Reed, an American who was buried in the Kremlin — Hollywood never approached the title subject directly: (whisper) Commies. Beatty’s production idiosyncrasies raised eyebrows but his picture is quite an achievement in filmic storytelling, cleverly accessing a political scene sixty years gone through testimony by notables that lived it. Beatty and Diane Keaton provide the romantic fireworks that make the film commercially viable, amid all the revolutionary fervor and political chaos.

Le Convoi de l'extrême (2007)
‘The Ice Road’ Film Review: Liam Neeson Hauls a Load of Action Clichés
Le Convoi de l'extrême (2007)
The idea of marrying the reality-tv staple “Ice Road Truckers” with the suspense classic “The Wages of Fear” — about long-haul drivers trying to get through treacherous mountain roads with a payload of nitroglycerin — isn’t a bad one in theory. In practice, however, “The Ice Road” is so often inept and heavy-handed that not even the reliable presence of Liam Neeson can rescue it.

Neeson has become a genre unto himself in recent years, starring in one movie after another about a regular guy (with a special set of skills) who finds himself in extraordinary circumstances. (This latest is his second in 2021 alone.) But while the Irish actor reliably hits both his marks and the bad guys, he’s doing so in a film that’s leadenly predictable when it’s not unintentionally laugh-out-loud funny.

Some of those laughs come from the screenplay by director Jonathan Hensleigh (“Kill the Irishman”), which trots out chestnuts like,...

The Mighty Ducks Trends on Twitter After Making Disney+ Streaming Debut
Image
Heads up, 90s Disney fans as The Mighty Ducks is finally streaming on Disney+. When the streaming service launched in November of last year, it seemed like there was a reasonably robust offering from the studio's back catalog. But there were some notable omissions and the Disney library was far from complete. Now, one of the most enduring live-action hits the Mouse House produced in the 90s is finally available to offer a little blast from the past. Nostalgia has proven to be a powerful thing, as the movie was one of the top trending topics on Twitter.

As part of the new batch of arrivals on Disney+ for July, The Mighty Ducks is now streaming as of this writing. The movie had been streaming on HBO Max as of late, but it has now shifted to its logical home for the foreseeable future. Unfortunately, completists will need to wait...

Dead Right: How Dirty Harry Captured the ’70s Culture Wars
Part I.

1971 was an incredibly violent year for movies. That year saw, among others, Tom Laughlin’s Billy Jack, with its half-Indian hero karate-chopping rednecks; William Friedkin’s The French Connection, its dogged cops stymied by well-heeled drug runners; Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange, banned for the copycat crimes it reportedly inspired; and Sam Peckinpah’s Straw Dogs, featuring the most controversial rape in cinema history. Every bloody shooting, sexual assault and death by penis statue reflected a world gone mad.

It seemed a reaction to America’s skyrocketing crime. Between 1963 and 1975, violent crimes tripled; riots, robberies and assassinations racked major cities. The antiwar and Civil Rights movements generated violent offshoots like the Weathermen and Black Panthers. Citizens blamed politicians like New York Mayor John Lindsay (the original “limousine liberal”), who proclaimed “Peace cannot be imposed on our cities by force of arms,” and Earl Warren’s Supreme Court,...

Looking back at D.A.R.Y.L.
A military cyborg boy goes on the run in the 80s family sci-fi, D.A.R.Y.L. Ryan takes a look back at a decent movie with a misleading poster...

Ah, D.A.R.Y.L. One of the less commonly discussed family movies of the 80s, but one firmly lodged in my mind, largely because of its poster and subsequent videotape cover. Depicting a small boy at the helm of an Sr-71 Blackbird (inarguably the coolest aircraft ever designed), it immediately captured my youthful imagination.

Imagine my disappointment, then, when I discovered that D.A.R.Y.L. is not an all-action adventure about a kid hurtling about in a stolen aircraft, but a fairly low-key drama about a cyborg child slowly integrating into normal family life. The aircraft theft only occurs in the final reel, and is mere minutes long - if you thought the aerial action in Firefox came along disappointingly late in the show, as I did,...

Ray Wise in X-Men: First Class, Nicholas Hoult up for Jack The Giant Killer
The Socio-political themes and allegories of the X-Men movies demand that the government plays a part in the stories.

The first film, back in 2000, gave us Senator Kelly (Bruce Davison) and a cameo from Henry Gyrich (Matthew Sharp); the second film saw more of the Senator and a Us president played by Cotter Smith; and the third brought us a new president (Josef Sommer), head of Homeland Security Bolivar Trask (Bill Duke) and Kelsey Grammer's Dr Hank McCoy/Beast as Secretary of Mutant Affairs.

X-Men: First Class needs a political figure too and into that role has stepped Ray Wise, the latest cast member to join the ensemble production.

Wise - who played the vice-president in 24 and The Devil in Reaper - tells IGN: "I'm playing the Secretary of State of the United States. I'll be going over there (to the Pinewood film set) in the next couple of weeks.

[DVD Review] The Elephant King
Completed in 2006, it took The Elephant King three years to hit DVD, after spending its first two years touring the festival rounds. It’s one of those films that seem to belong only in film festivals, playing for a curious and typically forgiving artistic crowd, where its lofty storytelling and derelict characters would be better appreciated.

The intention is noble and reasonably sound—it’s a movie showing the other side of those “finding one’s self by traveling” stories. Often, these movies are about unhappy westerners who trot off to far-end foreign lands; discovering love, friendship, life lessons and destiny. The usual backpacker bullshit. In its own overwrought way, The Elephant King does explore something closer to reality, of young men wanting to escape from their responsibilities back home and party in a third world atmosphere where they as the White American enjoy the luxury of superiority over the exploitation of peasant locals,...
