‘The Rainmaker’: Milo Callaghan & Madison Iseman on What That Suit Really Meant
Image
[Warning: The following post contains Major spoilers for The Rainmaker Episode 3.] When Rudy Baylor (Milo Callaghan) and Sarah Plankmore (Madison Iseman) first found themselves on opposing sides of the central case of The Rainmaker, they agreed not to let their professional lives mix with the personal relationship they had. Best laid plans being what they tend to be, though, that quickly went to the wayside … with some devastating consequences in this week’s new episode. The segment finds Sarah starting to reap some of the rewards of working for the high-profile Tinley Britt headed by Leo Drummond (John Slattery), including a swanky new apartment fully furnished by the firm. She efforts to share the spoils with Rudy by...

Second Teaser for 'Nuremberg' Movie w/ Russell Crowe & Rami Malek
Image
"I'm not gonna make them martyrs... There will be no statues of them." An important lesson from history. Sony Pictures Classics debuted another teaser trailer for Nuremberg, written and directed by screenwriter James Vanderbilt, the second feature he has directed (after producing and writing many other movies). Based on the book titled "The Nazi and the Psychiatrist" by Jack El-Hai, it's set at the famous Nuremberg Trials from 1945-1946 in Germany after WWII ended. It's set to premiere at the 2025 Toronto Film Festival next month before opening in theaters this November. A psychiatrist evaluates Nazi leaders before the trials begin, growing increasingly obsessed with understanding evil as he forms a disturbing bond with Hermann Göring.

Image
The aftermath of World War II will be on full display this fall in “Nuremberg,” a new historical thriller from writer/director James Vanderbilt. The film, which stars Rami Malek and Russell Crowe, is about an American psychiatrist (Malek) tasked with probing the mind of infamous Nazi leader Hermann Göring (Crowe) before he is prosecuted for his war crimes in the Nuremberg Trials, is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival before Sony Pictures Classics gives it an awards-friendly November release date. IndieWire can exclusively debut the film’s second teaser, which shows the mental warfare taking place between the two men as they prepare for a trial that would shape the post-war international order for the rest of the 20th century.

An official synopsis of the film reads, “The Allies, led by the unyielding chief prosecutor, Robert H. Jackson (Michael Shannon), have the task of ensuring the...

Viewers Deliver Their Verdict on 'Suits' New Replacement After Critics' Negative Reviews
Image
The television adaptation of John Grisham's novel The Rainmaker finally debuted on August 15 on USA Network. The legal drama starring Milo Callaghan, Lana Parrilla, and John Slattery in major roles was not met with the warmest reception from critics. The show debuted with a 50% score on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, a score that has now fallen to 47%. However, viewers had the opportunity to experience the story, and their outlook could not be more different from that of critics. Rotten Tomatoes' users have given the show a strong 76%, indicating that it resonated more with them. However, critics had the opportunity to see numerous episodes, so it's possible that as...

‘The Rainmaker’ Lands Big Ratings Account
Image
The Rainmaker, the first original scripted series under the Versant moniker, has gotten off to a solid start.

The legal drama, which airs on USA Network, part of the soon-to-be spun-off cable portfolio, drew 2.2M in its first three days. It was helped by the fact that it debuted as a simulcast across five networks and Peacock.

This made it the most-viewed original series premiere in the Versant portfolio since the launch of Syfy’s Resident Alien in 2021.

Per Versant, it also became the number one scripted cable original series premiere on linear TV in 2025 with 39% more viewers than TNT’s Librarians: Next Chapter, which was the second-ranked series premiere. However, there haven’t been as many scripted premieres on cable this year as there has been over the last few years.

The company said that The Rainmaker has reached 6.3 million viewers on linear TV to date.

The John Grisham adaptation,...

The Rainmaker Is A Top 10 Streaming Hit

More episodes of The Lincoln Lawyerare on their way, picking up after the conclusion of its third installment. Manuel Garcia-Rulfo's Mickey Haller has to defend his innocence after he's been arrested for murder, with Neve Campbell's Maggie McPherson returning to assist her ex during this tumultuous time. It's a lot for The Lincoln Lawyer season 4 to address, with no release date announced.

Quietly one of the biggest hits on streaming, and even topping the year-end rankings, the success of The Lincoln Lawyer is one of the factors that have played a part in the small screen's steady revitalization of the legal drama. Another factor, of course, is the...

Russell Crowe Surveys the Battlefield in New Image From Hotly Anticipated WWII Drama
Image
Russell Crowe embodies one of the biggest cogs in the Nazi war machine in a new image from Nuremberg. Crowe stars as Luftwaffe chief Hermann Goering in the post-World War II drama. The film will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next month before being released in theaters by Sony Pictures Classics on November 7.

In the new image, Crowe is decked out in full military regalia; Goering, a fighter pilot in World War I and head of Germany’s WWII-era air force, the Luftwaffe, was notoriously vain, and extremely particular about his grooming and wardrobe. The image depicts him striding across a debris-strewn battlefield, one of many that his...

Is The Rainmaker Based on a True Story? The Real-Life Inspiration Behind the USA Network Series
Image
The Rainmaker isn’t based on a true story, but it is inspired by real events, drawing elements from the story of a real case that involved fraud and the insurance industry. The recently released series may sound familiar to viewers for two reasons: first, Matt Damon’s 1997 film of the same name, and second, John Grisham’s 1995 novel. The plot was inspired by a real-life experience the author had, according to Audible.

Being a “story [that] was inspired by a real insurance bad faith case Grisham learned about as a young lawyer,” the series tells the same tale, following the story of a young attorney named Rudy Baylor, who has to battle a big law firm in a case.

The series explores just how far his opponents are willing to go to win, making one wonder just how much darker the real case would be! Thankfully, Grisham’s narrative details...

Image
[Warning: The following post contains spoilers for The Rainmaker‘s series premiere.] When we first meet Rudy Baylor (Milo Callaghan) in the new series adaptation of The Rainmaker, he seems to be on top of the world. He’s got a bright and beautiful girlfriend in Sarah Plankmore (Madison Iseman) and a new job as a first-year associate at the prestigious Tinley Britt law firm right alongside her. It doesn’t take long, though, for things to fall apart. After hearing that his mother’s boyfriend wants to replace his late brother’s room with a home gym, he picks a fight that becomes physical, leaving his suit and face bloodied up just in time for his first day at the office. Not only does he arrive late and disheveled to work, but he gets challenged by his new boss, Leo Drummond (John Slattery), to name a person for whom the legal system isn’t fair. He...

The Rainmaker Season 1 Episode 1 Review: Another Rainy Day Kicks Off a Promising Storm
Image
When The Rainmaker dropped its first episode, I wasn’t sure what to expect, especially knowing the long shadow cast by the John Grisham novel and its 1997 film adaptation.

Add to that the high bar set by series like Goliath, which felt like the spiritual evolution of these underdog legal dramas, and you’d better come out swinging.

Good news: this one just might.

(USA Network/Screenshot)

“Another Rainy Day” doesn’t waste time setting the tone. From the opening scene — literal fire, fear, and abandonment — it’s clear this show is reaching for emotional depth and character trauma right out of the gate.

And the Goliath vibes? Yeah, they’re here. A slick firm with questionable morals, a scrappy crew of legal outsiders, and one idealistic new lawyer caught in between.

He yells for his mother, but he can’t reach her bedroom, so he runs out of the house coughing and wheezing as the whole house goes up in flames. Then we meet Rudy Baylor (Milo Callaghan...

Here's how to watch The Rainmaker on USA and Peacock
Image
First came the hit John Grisham novel, then the popular Matt Damon film, and now almost 18 years later, The Rainmaker is coming to the small screen as a 10-episode television series. Despite the novel and film both releasing in the 1990s, the themes and conflicts driving The Rainmaker feel incredibly (and unfortunately) all too relevant.

The show follows a young law school grad named Rudy Baylor who (after being fired from his dream job on his first day) finds himself in a position where he has to take a job with a law firm that's.... less than desirable. As USA Network points out, the law offices are located in what used to be a taquería, and he's forced to take on the cards he's been dealt.

But when Rudy starts working on a major case, he uncovers "possible conspiracies surrounding the death of their client's son, involving a hospital whose...

Inside Track: How campaigns are embracing live events ahead of final Emmy voting
Image
The final weeks of summer are traditionally a time for rest and relaxation before the fall sprint to the Halloween-to-Christmas holiday corridor beings. But Emmy nominees and their awards teams have to spend the end of August on a rinse-and-repeat cycle of events and panels before they get to take advantage of the other kind of R&r. With the final voting period kicking off on Monday, a flurry of last-minute FYC gatherings are taking place on both coasts as contenders try to stay top of mind before voters take their proverbial pencils to their ballots.

As Inside Track has previously noted, the newest kid on the FYC block is Televerse, the first authorized event organized and hosted by the TV Academy. The lights went up on the three-day affair — held at the Jw Marriott Los Angeles L.A. Live — on Aug. 14 with star-studded panels and screenings for Top Chef,...

If You Loved Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘The Rainmaker,’ the TV Show Is Something Else Entirely
Image
Rudy Baylor, the protagonist and prophesied title character in “The Rainmaker,” shares a number of attributes across John Grisham’s 1995 novel, Francis Ford Coppola’s 1997 film adaptation, and now, Michael Seitzman’s 2025 TV series.

He’s a poor kid who comes from nothing. His father died years ago, and his mother “remarried badly” (as Grisham first described it). Now, he’s a recent graduate of law school, eager to get into a courtroom, but his only path to practicing law is by joining a sketchy firm led by an attorney named “Bruiser.”

But the rest of Rudy, the elements that really define him across his two original incarnations, are largely stripped away in the latest version, which prefers to swim in broad strokes. By abandoning the thorny specifics that lend Rudy distinction and purpose, beyond universal bland goals like a nice job, a nice wife, and a nice life, “The Rainmaker...

Lana Parrilla on Why Playing Bruiser in The Rainmaker Feels Like Coming Home
Image
If you watched Once Upon a Time, you already know Lana Parrilla can command a room. As the Evil Queen/Regina Mills, she didn’t just play a character — she created an icon.

For seven seasons, she gave fans a layered, magnetic performance that made them root for a villain, cheer for a redemption arc, and feel every shade of gray in between.

That same complexity is what makes her Bruiser in USA Network’s The Rainmaker so compelling.

(Noam Galai/USA Network)

In John Grisham’s novel and the 1997 film, Bruiser is male, a sharp operator with questionable morals. Here, Parrilla takes the core of that character and reframes it.

“Diversity is everything,” she says. “Out of all the roles, Bruiser was the one we could bend. It shows the masculine within the feminine — and I get to explore that side of myself in a way I haven’t on screen before.

John Grisham's The Rainmaker: Bold Character Change Explained By Star Lana Parrilla
Image
Why The Rainmaker makes a bold change to a key book character is explained by one of its stars. John Grisham’s legal thrillers have become a Hollywood staple with box office hits like The Firm (1993) starring Tom Cruise, The Pelican Brief (1993), The Client (1994), A Time to Kill (1996), and The Rainmaker (1997). These Grisham movie adaptations helped define the 1990s crime drama genre.

On television, Grisham's books inspired series like The Client (1995–1996), The Firm (2012), and Netflix’s The Innocent Man (2018). Now, a brand-new series based on one of his bestselling novels premieres on August 15 on USA Network. The show introduces a creative twist that wasn’t in the book, offering a fresh take on Grisham’s novel of high-stakes legal drama.

In an interview with ScreenRant about The Rainmaker, Lana Parrilla, who plays Jocelyn “Bruiser” Stone, discussed her character’s pivotal role in shaping the story. Unlike in the book or film,...

USA Network's New Suits Replacement (Which Reboots Matt Damon's Legal Drama) Debuts With Underwhelming Rt Score
Image
Matt Damon's breakout role came in 1997 with the Oscar-winning Good Will Hunting, which he co-wrote with Ben Affleck. The same year, he also starred in the John Grisham adaptation of the legal thriller The Rainmaker, which is one of the best adaptations of the author's novels.

28 years later, USA Network is introducing a new version of the story based on Grisham's 1995 novel of the same name. Set for release on Aug. 15, The Rainmaker has been turned into a reboot series starring Mad Men's John Slattery. Ahead of the show's premiere, The Rainmaker debuted with an underwhelming 50% approval score from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

At the time of writing, there are eight reviews available, and four of them are positive, while the other four are negative, based on the five episodes made available for review. The score is likely to fluctuate once more opinions come through, but the...

'Superman' Soars Past 'Ant-Man' at Global Box Office, Sets Sights on 'Iron Man' Next
Image
A month has passed since Superman entered the theaters, and it has surpassed another MCU feature. This time, it's Paul Rudd's MCU debut in Ant-Man, whose box office numbers have been squashed by DC's latest feature, showcasing how much audience pull the Man of Steel has in theaters. It won't be long until James Gunn's latest feature reaches its next Avenger. As of writing, Superman has generated over $581 million at the global box office, overtaking Ant-Man by over $62 million. And thanks to these latest box office figures, David Corenswet's Man of Steel is less than 4 million away from surpassing its next MCU target — Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man. Despite the backlash from Snyderverse fans, Superman immediately received praise from fans and critics upon its release. The superhero feature received a Certified Fresh Critics' Score of 83% and a Verified Hot audience score of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Milo Callaghan on Stepping Into the Spotlight with The Rainmaker
Image
Landing your first lead role in a TV series is no small feat, especially when it’s a John Grisham adaptation in the U.S. market, sharing scenes with heavy-hitters like Lana Parrilla and John Slattery.

For Milo Callaghan, who stars as Rudy Baylor in USA’s The Rainmaker, it’s been a career milestone that comes with both excitement and responsibility.

We had the opportunity to talk with him about his starring role in the new show, and he is an absolute delight. If he pulls some of himself into Rudy Baylor, Rudy will be irresistible.

(Christopher Barr/USA Network)

Stepping into a role that a successful actor like Matt Damon has already played might seem daunting, but not to Callahan.

“I was aware and really wanted to honor the people whose shoulders I was standing on,” Callaghan says. “Your Matt Damons, your Coppolas, John Grisham’s source material.

USA Network's New 'Suits' Replacement Receives a Verdict on Rotten Tomatoes
Image
USA Network is slowly making a comeback after delivering some of the most celebrated "blue sky" programming of the 2000s and 2010s. The cable network is set to air a television adaptation of John Grisham's novel The Rainmaker soon as it amps up original series production. The series debuts on Friday, August 15, but early reviews from critics are out, and the consensus is in. The Rainmaker is not compelling TV, debuting with a mere 50% on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. This is a far cry from the 1997 film adaptation starring Matt Damon that is rated fresh at 82% on the same site.

Based on the best-selling novel by John Grisham, Rudy Baylor (Milo Callaghan), who is fresh out of law school, goes head-to-head with courtroom lion Leo Drummond (John Slattery) as well as his law school girlfriend, Sarah (Madison Iseman). The Rainmaker Early Review: A Legal Drama That Remembers TV Is Supposed to Be Fun
Image
We’ve been conditioned lately to think every legal drama has to be shadowy, brooding, and “prestige” in order to matter.

The Rainmaker, USA’s new spin on the John Grisham classic, begs to differ. It’s not trying to be The Night Of or even Goliath. And thank goodness.

This is the kind of show you can actually look forward to watching — not just “survive” in 50-minute chunks — because it’s built for enjoyment. It’s slick, it’s soapy, and yes, it has a few rough edges, but that’s precisely why it works.

(USA Network/Screenshot)

The case at the center — a grieving mother convinced the hospital killed her son — has stakes, but the show never gets lost in the kind of cynical spiral that prestige TV loves.

There’s room for moments that breathe, banter that’s actually fun, and a willingness to let relationships be...

The Rainmaker Review: USA’s Legal Thriller Is Entertaining but Flawed
Image
There is a comforting, almost nostalgic rhythm to the legal underdog story. We know the beats: a young, idealistic lawyer, armed with more righteousness than experience, takes on a corporate Goliath. USA Network’s The Rainmaker understands this appeal intimately.

The series introduces us to Rudy Baylor, a sharp law graduate whose career at a top-tier firm lasts about as long as a free donut in the breakroom. Fired on his first day, Rudy tumbles down the professional ladder and lands in the offices of an ambulance-chasing firm run from a repurposed taco joint by the formidable Jocelyn “Bruiser” Stone.

His very first case is a doozy. A grieving mother suspects a powerful hospital is responsible for her son’s wrongful death. This premise alone is standard fare, but The Rainmaker immediately complicates things with soapy efficiency.

The hospital’s legal team is led by Rudy’s intimidating former boss,...

Dave Nemetz Reviews The Rainmaker: Even John Slattery Can’t Save USA’s Legally Bland Adaptation
Image
John Slattery is a national treasure. After memorable supporting turns on Ed, Sex and the City and Desperate Housewives, he gave us a truly iconic TV character in Roger Sterling, Mad Men’s sleazy yet somehow still charming ad exec. He makes every TV show he’s on better — but there’s only so much he can do to help USA’s new legal drama The Rainmaker, premiering this Friday at 10/9c. (I’ve seen the first three episodes.) Despite Slattery’s best efforts, it’s a tepid, muddled adaptation of the classic John Grisham courtroom thriller that falls victim to clunky writing and acting.

1997 gave audiences the film adaptation of “The Rainmaker,” John Grisham’s well-received novel about a young lawyer named Rudy Baylor (Matt Damon) who gets in over his head with a case just after graduating from law school. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola and released the same year as Damon’s Oscar-winning “Good Will Hunting,” “The Rainmaker” cemented Damon’s movie star status and adapted the novel for a modern audience.

In 2025, viewers are stepping back into Grisham’s gritty legal drama, this time in television form via the USA Network. Playing Rudy this time around, British actor Milo Callaghan infuses the baby-faced law grad character with a scrappy attitude as he is fired from a highfalutin southern law firm, Tinley Britt, where his girlfriend works, just six weeks before they take the bar exam. Having no other job prospects,...

The Rainmaker Review — An Engaging Courtroom Drama
Image
USA Network is re-entering the courtroom drama world with The Rainmaker. The series based on John Grisham’s novel of the same name is created by Michael Seitzman and Jason Richman. Emmy-winning actor John Slattery, known for his work on Mad Men and in the MCU, will lead the charge opposite Milo Callaghan. USA Network might not produce as many shows as they once did, but when they do, they knock it out of the ballpark.

The Rainmaker follows the story of Rudy Baylor, a hotshot young lawyer who was fired from his white-collar firm, leading him to sign with a small-time ambulance chaser and her less-than-honest paralegal. He soon discovers that he is facing off against his former employer in court when he takes on a wrongful death case.

‘The Rainmaker’ Review: A Perfect Show to Watch While Doing Something Else
Image
Back in 2023, despite being only a moderately well-received series that wrapped up several years prior, USA’s Suits suddenly became the most streamed show in America. The surge came shortly after the series was added to Netflix, and some attributed its popularity on the streamer to the fact that it offered low-effort entertainment, ideal for playing in the background while you fold laundry or catch up on emails.

With The Rainmaker, the cable network seems to be trying to recreate that formula with a courtroom soap opera featuring an unlikely lawyer and his fast-talking buddy, filled with preposterous plot twists and unbelievable coincidences. Adapted from John Grisham’s 1995 novel of the same name, The Rainmaker follows said attorney, Rudy Baylor (Milo Callaghan), who’s hired straight out of law school by the most prestigious firm in town alongside his hotshot girlfriend, Sarah Plankmore (Madison Iseman).

On Rudy’s very first day,...
