Father of actress Pamela Simpson (1905-2002).

Lean, white-haired and austere-looking Scottish supporting actor in Hollywood, often seen as servants, lawyers, doctors and clergymen.

Character actor said to have been a favorite of the film star George Arliss. He appeared in some seven of the latter's pictures, among scores of others from 1915 to 1948.

Appeared in seven Best Picture Oscar nominees: Disraeli (1929), The House of Rothschild (1934), David Copperfield (1935), Les révoltés du Bounty (1935), Capitaine Blood (1935), Les aventures de Robin des Bois (1938) and Prisonniers du passé (1942). Mutiny on the Bounty won Best Picture of 1935.
