10 Best '90s Fantasy & Adventure Movies
Image
Since the days of cinema classics like Ben-Hur, fantasy movies have set the benchmark for quality, high-budget entertainment, as can be seen in iconic franchises like The Lord of the Rings. From focusing on heroes embarking on epic quests to reimaginings of beloved fairy tales, the 1990s gave audiences some of the most enjoyable entries in the genre, though with an emphasis on smaller budgets, comedy, and animation.

The 1990s saw something of a slump in fantasy cinema, as the '80s had no shortage of campy flops in the genre, but still remains a great decade for family-oriented adventure. From worlds populated by knights and dragons to reboots of classic Universal Monsters, the decade is practically synonymous with adventure. With many of these movies still household names for fantasy fans, it's worth remembering some of the best the '90s had to offer.

10 Best Comic Book Movies Inspired by Pulp Classics
Image
The most influential movies today are based on superhero comics. However, before the era of caped and costumed heroes, there was the age of pulp magazines. Popular until the 1950s, these magazines featured a wide range of heroes, from adventurers to noir detectives to horror protagonists. Pulp heroes were, in many ways, the precursors to modern superheroes.

After the success of Tim Burton’s Batman, an influx of pulp-inspired movies emerged in the 1990s. This era appealed to an older generation nostalgic for simpler heroes, while also embracing the stylish aesthetics of the 1930s and 1940s. Pulp-inspired movies were simpler, less flashy, and often cheesier than today’s superhero blockbusters, yet they retained a unique charm.

10 Most Rewatchable Western Films of All Time
Image
Western movies have long brought audiences a combination of adventure, action and drama through great movies, from classics like Shane to modern hidden gems like Hostiles. However, due to the genre's generally slower pacing than others, it can be difficult for many movies to find a following. Some Westerns, by contrast, offer a faster pacing, better attention to action and memorable characters than others, allowing audiences to enjoy them over and over again.

Westerns have seen some of their best movies gain a strong following through all-star casts and blockbuster-style action, which appeal to fans of genres like action. While some Westerns have grown their appeal by mixing with other genres, like horror and comedy, others were made great through compelling scripts and all-star casts. The genre may not be the powerhouse it once was, but some of cinema's most rewatchable movies come from the Old West.

Stand By Me Cast & Where They Are Now
Image
Stand By Me is an undeniable 80s classic, and many of its young actors would go on to have impressive careers. Based on the Steven King novella The Body, the film unfolds the dramatic story of four young boys who set out to discover the dead body of a missing boy. Despite its dark premise, Stand By Me is really a touching tale about youth and friendship. Its enduring influence has earned it a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Rob Reiner's coming-of-age story has appealed to each generation with its timeless themes and remains one of the best movies about childhood. Set in 1950s Oregon, the film banked on its adult audience's nostalgia for an era of baseball cards and drive-in movie theaters. Revisiting the film today produces another kind of nostalgia for those who grew up in the era it was released, though. The young cast of Stand By Me...

Lou Diamond Philips Teases 'Fantastic' Script for Young Guns 3
Image
Young Guns 3 is still in the works, Lou Diamond Phillips reveals. Lou Diamond Phillips teases "fantastic" script written by Emilio Estevez. Phillips cites the production company, Morgan Creek, as the main roadblock for the legacy sequel.

Young Guns was essentially The Breakfast Club of Westerns, with style to spare and a sense of humor to match. The titular characters were Emilio Estevez's William H. Bonney Aka Billy the Kid, Kiefer Sutherland's Josiah Gordon "Doc" Scurlock, Charlie Sheen's Dick Brewer, Lou Diamond Phillips' Jose Chavez y Chavez, Dermot Mulroney's Dirty Steve Stephens, and Casey Siemaszko's Charley Bowdre. And, in the age of legacy sequels, it was only so long before another adventure with the regulators was announced, and that's just what happened back in 2021. But news on the project is a well that's run dry since then. At least, until now.

Lou Diamond Phillips was asked about...

Tom Cruise & Bon Jovi Share A Bizarre Western Cameo Trend In Common
Image
Tom Cruise and Jon Bon Jovi made uncredited, brief cameo appearances in the Young Guns franchise. Young Guns, followed by its sequel, played a crucial role in the revival of the Western genre in the 1990s. A third Young Guns film has been written and prepped, but its future is uncertain; if it happens, it should continue the tradition of hidden cameos.

On the surface, Tom Cruise and Jon Bon Jovi may not appear to have much in common, but they both share a unique Western trait in common. Without a doubt, the 1980s was the worst time for Westerns, thanks to the box-office failure of Heaven's Gate. This 1980 epic cost a staggering (for the time) $44 million to produce, and grossed less than a tenth of that back at the box office. In the aftermath, studios avoided Westerns like the plague, with Clint Eastwood's genre comeback Pale Rider being a rare exception.

Tom Cruise's Young Guns Cameo Explained
Image
Young Guns, a Western film featuring a star-studded cast, includes a blink-and-you'll-miss-it Tom Cruise cameo. Although the movie gained commercial success, it remains relatively lesser-known compared to other Westerns. Tom Cruise's involvement in the film showcases his collaborative spirit and willingness to take on diverse roles, contributing to his enduring success in Hollywood.

Young Guns is known for boasting a roster of renowned actors like Kiefer Sutherland, Emilio Estevez, and Charlie Sheen, but not many know about its surprising Tom Cruise cameo. Based on American outlaw Billy the Kid's adventures during the Lincoln County War, Young Guns unfolds in New Mexico, where a group of young gunmen get embroiled in a game of cat-and-mouse. Upon release, although Young Guns primarily received mixed reviews from viewers and critics, it performed fairly well at the box office by raking in $56 million against a budget of $11 million.

However, despite being commercially successful,...

Wtf Happened to Young Guns?
Image
Howdy pardners! Today, we’re galloping back to 1988, when Christopher Cain and a band of rootin’ tootin’ outlaws shot up the silver screen for the American Western action film Young Guns. Presented as a retelling of the adventures of Billy the Kid during the Lincoln Couty War, Young Gun features a murderers’ row of talent, including Emilio Estevez, Kiefer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips, Charlie Sheen, Dermot Mulroney, Casey Siemaszko, Terence Stamp, Jack Palance, and Terry O’Quinn.

Cain directs from a script by John Fusco. Young Guns revolves around a group of young gunmen, led by Billy the Kid, who become deputies to avenge the murder of the rancher who became their benefactor. However, when Billy takes their authority too far, they become the hunted.

Historian Paul Hutton once called Young Guns the most historically accurate of all films focusing on the dirty deeds of Billy the Kid as of its year of release.

Of Mice And Men: 10 Differences Between The Book And The Film
Image
Lennie's size is downplayed in the Of Mice and Men film, relying more on Malkovich's performance to convey his isolation and loneliness. The Of Mice and Men film focuses on Lennie's intellectual disability rather than his mental illness, forgoing hallucinations like Aunt Clara and the rabbit featured in the book. The character of Curley's wife is portrayed as more sympathetic in the film, making her death appear more tragic and less deserving.

One of the great American classics, Of Mice and Men, was turned into a 1992 feature film starring John Malkovich and Gary Sinese, but there are several Of Mice and Men differences between the film and book. John Steinbeck is one of the greatest American writers to have set pen to paper. His novels shine a light on the realities of the American experience and stands as some of the classics of literature, with books such as The Grapes of Wrath,...

Favorite director Bill Forsyth lends his knack for droll understatement to a screenplay by John Sayles, a crime tale that opts for keen character study and doesn’t stretch credibility. Burt Reynolds has a gem of a role as a career burglar doing his bit for the next generation, showing a ‘new guy’ the ins and outs of thievery; Casey Siemaszko is his thick-headed but resolutely faithful assistant on several outrageous heists. The criminal life almost doesn’t seem too terrible — except for the going-to-prison part. The disc commentary with Forsyth and Sayles is a great listen.

Lou Diamond Phillips Says He Got the Call for Young Guns 3
Image
Young Guns star Lou Diamond Phillips has now confirmed that yes, he has gotten the call for proposed sequel Young Guns 3 and that yes, he is hoping to return. Based on the overwhelmingly positive response to the recent news that a third installment in the Young Guns franchise is in development there is clearly an appetite for more from the mismatched crew, with Phillips hoping that they can work out a way to bring him back.

32 Actors Have Starred In More Than One Stephen King Movie
Hollywood’s latest obsession with the works of prolific author and horror icon Stephen King shows no signs of slowing down, and just like the last time he found his novels and short stories being adapted for the big and small screens on a regular basis, the most recent batch have also been marked with inconsistency.

With so many filmmakers of vastly different styles tackling the material with such wildly fluctuating results, it almost seems hard to believe that stone-cold classics like The Shining and The Shawshank Redemption are based on books written by the same mind behind infamous duds like Dreamcatcher and The Dark Tower.

There are currently eleven movies and nine TV shows in various stages of development based on the 72 year-old’s literary output, and while we might be veering dangerously close to saturation point, it appears that the industry’s latest Stephen King renaissance is set...

Here's what he had to say, during an appearance at Jordan Brand's Flight Lab space in New Orleans over the weekend.

"Are we gonna see power laces in 2015? To that, I say Yes!"

Of course, the year 2015 is when the beloved sequel was set, making it the perfect time for these power laces to debut. However, it isn't known if Nike is releasing the Mag shoe that they designed for the movie, which were worn by Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox), or if the power laces will be used on other shoes.

Back in 2011, Nike created 1,500 pairs of the Mag shoes with the self-lacing feature that contours the shoe to each individual's feet, for a ten-day eBay auction,...

10 Favorite Westerns of All Time
A couple of weeks ago, Quentin Tarantino said that he loved working on Django Unchained so much, he wanted his next film to be a western also. This news made my day because I would love to see a resurgence of the western genre. Westerns are not considered one of the top tier genres, but I think that they are one of the most complex and interesting. Conventional rules do not apply to westerns. The protagonist/antagonist line is slightly blurred. That is what makes them more real. Any one of us would like to think that we are good people, but put us in a circumstance where we or someone we love is threatened, and we will fight to the bitter end. That is what the western is all about, the darker, grittier side of humanity. That is what I love about these films.

Just a little disclaimer; I...

'Killing Kennedy': Rob Lowe, Ginnifer Goodwin bring Bill O' Reilly's JFK docudrama to life
On Nov. 22, America and the world mark the 50th anniversary of one of the most momentous events of the 20th century, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

Directed by Nelson McCormick from a script by Kelly Masterson, "Killing Kennedy" stars Rob Lowe as JFK, Ginnifer Goodwin as first lady Jacqueline Kennedy, Will Rothhaar as Lee Harvey Oswald, Michelle Trachtenberg as Marina Oswald, Jack Noseworthy as Bobby Kennedy, Casey Siemaszko as Jack Ruby, Francis Guinan as Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Flood as Kennedy insider Kenneth O'Donnell.

On this bright mid-June day in Richmond,...

23 High School Movies That Get The Passing Grade
Considering it's where most of us (bar the weird home-schooled kids) spend our crucial formative years, where we have our first fights, our first loves, our first tentative steps into adulthood, it's no surprise that high school has long been a popular setting for movies. A range of genres (though generally leaning towards comedy) have taken place in those hallways, particularly from the 1980s onwards, when John Hughes, among others, made an entire career out of the lives and loves of 15-18 year olds.

The latest film to head back to class is "21 Jump Street" (review here) the big-screen reboot of the '80s TV show, which stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as youthful-looking cops who are sent back to high school in order to bust a drug-running ring. While you might assume this to be another lazy remake, you'd be very wrong, as Tatum, Hill, co-writer Michael Bacall,...

Dermot Mulroney at an event for Esprit de famille (2005)
We couldn't be bigger fans of the movie Young Guns, specifically the character Dirty Steve. So when we get a chance to chat with actor Dermot Mulroney, we jump on it.

Dermot Mulroney stars in the new comedy The Family Tree, which hits theaters this Friday, August 26th. While chatting with the guy, whom we love, about his role as a father going through a midlife crisis, we couldn't help but go back to Dirty Steve and his past exploits. As it turns out, Dermot Mulroney would love to see the character return in a spin-off called Young Guns: The Ghost of Dirty Steve.

"All the kids that were watching Young Guns when they were fourteen or fifteen, right when it came out, and everyone got VCRs? They watched it over and over again. You know what happened to them? They all grew up and got jobs. Now, when we talk,...

'Stand by Me' at 25 -- The Stars' Oral History of Their Beloved Classic
Filed under: Celebrity Interviews, Features, Best Movies Ever, Hot Topic

In celebration of its 25th anniversary, Rob Reiner's seminal classic 'Stand by Me' was released on Blu-ray for the first time this week. The movie, set in the 1950s, tells a bittersweet tale of four adolescent friends who go off into the woods in search of a rumored dead body that may or not be a missing young boy they know. They must also find this body before the bullying Ace Merrill (Kiefer Sutherland) and his gang, the Cobras, get to it. What follows is a poignant coming-of-age tale about childhood adventures in the summer and the pain of growing up.

'Stand by Me' was an immediate success, touching a nerve with audiences young and old. To celebrate the film's 25th anniversary, Moviefone spoke with director Rob Reiner and several of the film's stars: Wil Wheaton...

[DVD Review] Stand by Me - 25th Anniversary
Some subgenres see pretty clear divides run down their middle according to certain criteria. One is the buddy comedy, where depending on the film’s intent to target male or female audiences, there will be a pretty safe difference in the kind of comedy used. Look at Dumb and Dumber and Clueless, each one caters safely to one gender or the other, though both films can arguably be enjoyed by both. Then you have the coming of age drama where this divide persists. Again you have a great parallel between Stand by Me and Now & Then, stories about revisiting a key point in youth. As a guy, I may be somewhat biased, but for my money both Dumb and Dumber and Stand by Me win in their respective categories by miles; Stand by Me however is miles ahead of its counterpart and stands up to the test of time in many ways.

The Top 13 Movie Team-Ups
To celebrate Lionsgate’s UK release of The Expendables on DVD and Blu-ray on December 13th, we here at Blogomatic3000 thought we’d take a look at our favourite team-ups in movie history…

13) Bubba Ho-Tep

Who else but Phantasm director Don Coscarelli could bring you a tale that sees an elderly Elvis team up with JFK to to battle an evil Egyptian mummy who has chosen their East Texas rest home as his hunting grounds. Based on the award-winning short story by Joe R. Lansdale, Bubba Ho-Tep is a movie that needs to be seen to be believed, and is possibly Bruce Campbell’s greatest performance.

12) Dead Heat

What says team-up more than a cop teaming up with his dead partner to take down zombie criminals? That’s the basic plot of Dead Heat, which follows cops Roger Mortis and Doug Bigelow as they try and solve a case that...

Watch Eric Stoltz as Marty Mcfly in Back to the Future!
Back to the Future: 25th Anniversary Trilogy Blu-ray will be released on October 26. The Hollywood Reporter has our first look at one of the special features included on this release, which offers, for the first time ever, footage of Eric Stoltz as Marty McFly. Eric Stoltz was originally cast as the lead in Robert Zemeckis' classic time travel adventure-comedy, and he embodied the now-classic role of Marty McFly for five weeks before being replaced by Michael J. Fox. Both producer Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis made this drastic and unheard of decision because they felt the actor had a different comedic approach to the material that was written, and that he didn't have the right comedic timing for this particular character.

Click on the video below for your first ever glimpse at Eric Stoltz's version of Marty McFly, and you can also take a look at the...

Video Vault – Three O’Clock High
American high school films were a dime a dozen at the local video shop back in the day.

John Hughes had the monopoly on the teen angst market, and for those who preferred smut over senior proms, there was always sex comedies like Porky’s and its two sequels. Occasionally though, there were films from this genre which, having slipping through the net theatrically, were ripe for rediscovery amongst the other titles which sat on those red bulky display shelves.

1987’s Three O’Clock High was (and still is) one such example for me, and it also proved to be an interesting departure from the standard high school films of that time, even prompting executive producer Steven Spielberg to take his name off the credits (presumably because he felt it didn’t fit in with his series of Amblin-produced family friendly features).

Casey Siemaszko (a gang member in two iconic...

TV Watch: The Event Pilot Episode
The Event? Whoop-doo!

The Event? Keep it coming! New series. Airs Monday nights at 9/8 central on NBC. Episode 1.02: Keep Us Safe airs September 27th.

What is The Event? Certain characters know, but the writers of this show aren't telling. Not yet. Though, they claim we'll know soon enough. Apparently it involves a giant ball of blue phlegm that is spit forth from the heavens above. One that is capable of swallowing airliners whole. And Laura Innes, who is spoken to in a manner only befitting an alien presence from space definitely has something to do with it. But who or what is she? Only time will tell in this eager jolt of itchy anticipation.

The Event is a jittery child that doesn't sit down long enough for us to get comfortable with it. It herks and jerks between various months, giving us little snippets of the past; images only complicated by the immediate future.
