Sadie Frost
Twiggy review – Sadie Frost’s breezy telling of sunny fashion star’s landmark career
Sadie Frost
Frost’s documentary follows the working-class Londoner taking bad luck in her stride as she progresses from fashion to film stardom and back again

This feelgood film directed by Sadie Frost is about the 60s fashion icon Twiggy; originally Lesley Hornby from Neasden in London, latterly Lesley Lawson after her marriage to actor Leigh Lawson, and then Dame Lesley Lawson with her Dbe in 2019. With comments from A-listers including Edward Enninful and Suzy Menkes, it tells us the story of a working-class heroine with an almost eerily beautiful gamine face who became a fashion legend with a pop-star status that eluded earlier figures such as Jean Shrimpton, though without the smouldering attitude of the supermodel generation that came later.

Twiggy made a glorious success of her life, and never conformed to any tragic narrative about how triumph in the ephemeral world of fashion and fame must surely be punished with disaster.

John Lennon and The Beatles in Quatre Garçons dans le vent (1964)
John Lennon’s Psychedelic Eye Mosaic From His Swimming Pool At Kenwood To Be Offered At Bonhams
John Lennon and The Beatles in Quatre Garçons dans le vent (1964)
London – A psychedelic eye mosaic commissioned by John Lennon for the swimming pool at his Kenwood home in Surrey in 1965 leads Bonhams’ Rock, Pop & Film sale on Wednesday 29 November at Knightsbridge, London.

Claire Tole-Moir, Bonhams Head of Popular Culture in London, commented: “This monumental mosaic, commissioned by John Lennon is a striking example of the Beatle’s artistic vision and influences. Lennon’s Kenwood home in the English countryside was a place of respite from all the public attention he experienced during the height of The Beatles’ popularity. It’s said Lennon would spend idle hours near the swimming pool and that the mosaic could even be seen from his favoured ‘sunroom’ at the top of the house. With Kenwood still under private ownership, it is very rare to see anything from when John Lennon lived there, making the ‘Psychedelic Eye’ mosaic an incredibly important artefact of Beatles history.”

Consisting of approximately 17,000 tiles,...

Dark Intruder

Blu ray

Kino Lorber

1965 / 1.85:1 / 59 min.

Starring Leslie Nielsen, Peter Mark Richman, Judi Meredith

Cinematography by John F. Warren

Directed by Harvey Hart

Produced in 1965, Universal Pictures intended Dark Intruder for television but when NBC executives screened the film they took a pass—set in the goth-friendly year of 1890, Barré Lyndon’s story, with overtones of Lovecraft and demonic possession, was deemed “too scary” for the living room audience. That same audience would weather an entire season of My Mother the Car so perhaps Hollywood was underestimating America’s ability to deal with adversity. Universal was undeterred—now officially a “feature”, Harvey Hart’s film opened that summer in Los Angeles alongside Torn Curtain and in New York on the bottom half of a bill with I Saw What You Did (Manhattanites were treated to a personal appearance from Joan Crawford).

With the advent of roadshow attractions like Lawrence of Arabia,...

The Last Jedi: Interview with Costume Designer Michael Kaplan
Minor Spoilers

There are already lots of good interviews with Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) costume designer Michael Kaplan on the internet (we recommend this one in particular), so for Clothes on Film we kept it brief and fresh. We caught up with Kaplan, who is also responsible for Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), Star Trek (2009), Fight Club (1999) and Blade Runner (1982), for a little chat about what’s new for episode 8 of the ever evolving space saga.

Clothes on Film: Let’s kick off by asking you about the best new costume in the film, the Elite Praetorian Guard…

Michael Kaplan: They are my favourite costumes too! I created a mood board with all the elements I was thinking about – mostly shiny, red, candy apple muscle cars from the early 1970s. We incorporated the bends, the vents, etc. I loved the final, completed design arrived at, but that was just the beginning.

Terence Stamp: ‘I was in my prime, but when the 60s ended, I ended with it’
He was the star of some of the decade’s most memorable films – and dated some of its most beautiful women. With the reissue of 1967’s Far From the Madding Crowd, the actor talks about his friendship with Michael Caine and his topsy-turvy career

Terence Stamp sticks his head round the door and opens his mouth. How will this legend of British acting introduce himself? What pearl of wisdom will he divulge? Stamp, self-confessed “decadent” and former holder of the title of world’s best-looking man (1963-1969) speaks: “Gotta take a slash, man. It’s funny how things work out. Now 76, Stamp had a fantastic 1960s, during which he starred in a handful of imperishable classics (Billy Budd, Ken Loach’s Poor Cow, Pasolini’s Theorem) and consorted with some of the era’s most beautiful women (Julie Christie,...

Though New Girl’s third season has reached its end, star Zooey Deschanel is embarking on her own new adventure as the finale, “Cruise,” shows off several looks from “To Tommy, From Zooey,” the capsule collection Deschanel co-designed with fashion titan Tommy Hilfiger.

Hilfiger notes that Deschanel’s “modical” (mod + nautical) looks — including the dress above — make for a “serendipitous” addition to Tuesday’s episode, which sees the loftmates roped into a high-seas farce after exes Jess (Deschanel) and Nick (Jake Johnson) realize the couples cruise they booked while drunk is non-refundable.

Allan McKeown obituary
Television and stage producer known for Auf Wiedersehen, Pet and Birds of a Feather

The television producer Allan McKeown, who has died aged 67 of prostate cancer, created the groundbreaking Witzend Productions with the sitcom writers Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais and had hits on both sides of the Atlantic. It was one of the earliest independent production companies outside the British broadcasting establishment to find success within it.

A prime example of Witzend's attempts to push the boundaries of the medium – and McKeown's credit as executive producer – was Auf Wiedersehen, Pet (1983-86). The series, about a group of itinerant British builders in Germany – developed by Clement and La Frenais from an idea by Franc Roddam – went beyond the sitcom format to become one of the first in the comedy-drama genre.

ITV at first had no plans to make a second series but backtracked when up to 13 million viewers tuned in.

The Look of Love: Dressing the No-Body Body
Beginning in the late 1950s, into the 60’s, predominantly through the mid to late 70’s, then into the early 90’s, costume designer Stephanie Collie’s work for The Look of Love covers several distinct periods.

This is the true story of King of Soho billionaire Paul Raymond (Steve Coogan) told via the many women in his life. Helpfully these women confirm to a specific body type which is still relatable as the model ideal today, i.e. very slender or the ‘no-body body’. This means that all the garments on screen look fantastic. They are costumes above all but still relevant as fashion; the 60’s especially still informs contemporary style for women’s clothes. The 60’s and 70’s will always be one of the fondest eras to recreate on screen, yet also one of the trickiest. Potentially The Look of Love was only a feather boa away from being fancy dress.

Call it locks - of rock - love. One of Mick Jagger's earliest serious girlfriends, who dated him when he was a London student, saved a clump of the rock icon's hair. And now she's giving it away in the nicest way: an auction to help disfigured people, where the clippings brought in $6,000, Rolling Stone reports. Chrissie Shrimpton, sister of the famed '60s-era model Jean Shrimpton, dated Jagger, now 69, in the early '60s, when he was attending the London School of Economics - and long before he became a global rock star. 'The Mona Lisa Of Album Covers'
David Bowie
Mick McCann at the Guardian called the iconic 1973 cover art for Aladdin Sane "The Mona Lisa of album covers."

Coinciding with the iconic image's 40th birthday this year, Foam Gallery in Amsterdam is showing a selection of photographs that revel in the beauty of when David Bowie met British fashion photographer Brian Duffy. Simply titled, "Bowie by Duffy: Photographs '72 - '80," the exhibit provides behind-the-scenes looks at a collaboration with the king of glam.

Duffy began his foray into photography at British Vogue before going on to define the Swinging Sixties through his images of celebrities, cultural luminaries and fashion icons, including John Lennon, Jean Shrimpton and William S. Burroughs.

This exhibition follows Duffy and Bowie's relationship in the pivotal years when Bowie was creating and discarding personas with ease; we see Ziggy Stardust, Thin White Duke, and of course, Aladdin Sane, which...

Which Model Has Landed the Most Vogue Covers?
Sorry Gisele Bundchen. You may have an amazing body, beautiful man and millions in the bank, but you don't have the most Vogue covers in history. Neither do other supermodels Kate Moss, Cindy Crawford or Claudia Schiffer. The honor goes to Lauren Hutton, who has graced the cover of the fashion magazine 26 times! With her short stature (5'7") and gap-toothed smile, some would consider her an atypical choice. However, for the editors of Vogue, her beauty transcends. One of her most famous covers is from 1973, when she was shot by famed photographer Richard Avedon. You can see it here. Models Jean Shrimpton and Karen Graham were tied for second with 20 covers a piece, followed by Cindy Crawford. See who made the top 10, below (unfortunately, we couldn't find a photo of Graham, but you can see one of her covers here).See all of the top 10's Vogue covers here. Read...

Rebecca Front: My family values
The comedy actor talks about her family

Growing up, our household felt unusual because none of my friends' parents had creative jobs like mine did: my dad was an artist, illustrator and calligrapher, and my mum was a teacher but wrote children's stories, too. So our house was full of books and records, and was always a bit chaotic. But it was a warm, liberal upbringing.

My parents completely supported mine and my brother's career choices – I'm an actor, he's a writer. Dad had done this mad thing and gone to the Slade [School of Fine Art], which was unheard of for a working-class East End boy. So he completely got that you have to do what you want.

Dad went from studying fine art to working in advertising, wearing Jaeger suits and doing photoshoots with Jean Shrimpton. But he hated it. So Mum, to her enormous credit, said: "Give it up, you're not happy,...

Karen Gillan on Leaving Doctor Who
Karen Gillan has been the Doctor Who companion for two seasons but is saying goodbye to her cushy job on Doctor Who and has thankfully taken the time to express her thoughts on leaving one of TV’s longest running series. As is custom for Doctor Who, the companions of the series always eventually leave to make room for someone new to accompany the Doctor on his adventures through space and time. As sad as it is to Gillan leave, it’s a natural progression for her character and one that would have occurred eventually.

Gillan sat down and spoke with Collider (go check that out!), explaining why she decided it was time to leave the series. From the sounds of it, Gillan is a woman who likes to live in the moment, following her instincts wherever they may take her. Her instincts were apparently telling her now was the...

Doctor Who's Karen Gillan on Jean Shrimpton role in We'll Take Manhattan
Doctor Who star Karen Gillan was cast as 60s supermodel Jean Shrimpton in a new TV drama - and then found herself face-to-face with the star's former flame David Bailey.

Gillan, 24, stars as Shrimpton in the BBC4 story We'll Take Manhattan, which explores the explosive love affair between "The Shrimp" and the world-famous photographer, played by Aneurin Barnard.

The Scottish actress told the Radio Times that she had not been able to meet Shrimpton, who now runs a hotel in Penzance and avoids public appearances.

But she found herself posing for David Bailey in a Vogue magazine shoot - and says he was as formidable as his reputation.

Karen had researched Bailey (right) and thought she had an idea of what to expect.

She told the magazine: "He's a funny one, he plays mind games to provoke his subjects."

Karen Gillan – this year's model
According to Matt Smith the actor is Doctor Who's 'sexiest companion ever' and now she is to play Jean Shrimpton. Here, she talks about her obsession with the 60s – and why she wishes she could make everyone fall in love

One freezing week in 1962, David Bailey took 18-year-old Jean Shrimpton and a sad-eyed teddy bear to Harlem, where he shot a Vogue fashion story that would change fashion photography for ever. The pictures still look modern: a glossy black-and-white spread of the Brooklyn Bridge, raw and stark and angry, with that innocuous yet sinister teddy bear underlining Shrimpton's innocence. That week, Bailey (an arrogant, married 23-year-old) and Shrimpton (a flighty Buckinghamshire farm girl) fell in love – this month BBC4 airs We'll Take Manhattan, the dramatisation of that affair. Karen Gillan, best known as Doctor Who's sidekick Amy Pond (Matt Smith pronounced her "the sexiest companion ever") plays "the...

'Doctor Who' Karen Gillan: 'I didn't care about modelling'
Karen Gillan
Karen Gillan has said that she never cared about modelling. The Doctor Who star was scouted by an agency before winning her first TV roles and walked the catwalk at London Fashion Week. Of whether she shared the thoughts of Jean Shrimpton, who she plays in upcoming BBC4 drama We'll Take Manhattan, Gillan told Stylist: "Yes, I understand everything she says about modelling. "As a model you just do what you're told. It's not something that ever bothered me really because I didn't feel that there was a lot riding on it. "I didn't care about modelling, so the pressure wasn't there for me." Asked if she met Shrimpton when preparing for the role, she added: "No. I didn't have the chance because she's quite private. She runs a hotel in Penzance. (more)...

Karen Gillan: 'Doctor Who the most fun job ever'
Christopher Eccleston, Peter Capaldi, David Tennant, Matt Smith, and Jodie Whittaker in Doctor Who (2005)
Karen Gillan has said that she doubts any future acting role will be more fun than Doctor Who. The actress joined the show in April 2010 as companion Amy Pond alongside the 11th Doctor played by Matt Smith. "It's been so amazing," she told the Evening Standard. "I don't think I will ever have a job quite so fun ever again." Gillan recently said that she will not make regular cameo appearances in Doctor Who once she leaves the series. "I don't want Amy to pop up again every so often, because for me it would take away from the big, emotional goodbye," she said. "Once she's gone, she's gone. I want people to remember the Amy Pond era as a good one." Gillan plays '60s supermodel Jean Shrimpton in upcoming BBC Four biopic (more)...

'Doctor Who' Girl Gets 'Not Another Happy Ending'
Some people can't get enough of stories of love triumphing against all odds, and for them, there's a whole section of Netflix full of Nicholas Sparks movies.

For the more cynical movie-goer, or the guy or gal who just wants to know where Amy Pond goes when she's not slipping through the universe, there's "Not Another Happy Ending."

The movie, written by David Solomoms, tells the story of a girl whose happiness nearly ruins her life, and the handsome hero who sets out to make sure she's miserable.

Screen Daily reports that "Doctor Who" actress Karen Gillan will star as the film's protagonist, an author of dark fiction whose career success causes an ascent out of agony and leaves her unable to write.

Desperate to get her back in the swing of things, her publisher, played by "Game of Thrones" actor Emun Elliot, does everything in his power to make her unhappy,...

Michael Bay, movie-making maverick?
Transformers: Dark Of The Moon is Michael Bay's latest epic, but is it time we accepted just how out-there his films are?

To accuse Michael Bay of going over the top is like yelling at Mount Etna just because it erupts. It's in his very nature and genetic makeup; it's what he does – over the top is where he lives, up where the air is thin and icy and finally makes you giddy, addled and crazy enough to make movies like Transformers: Dark Of The Moon.

Forget the critical rout and ponder its contradictions and many overlapping instances of deep weirdness: a popcorn kiddie-flick that's longer, at 155 minutes, than some Béla Tarr or Pedro Costa movies; a threequel based not on a book or a comic or a Broadway hit or even a videogame, but on a Saturday morning cartoon designed to pimp a line of toys.

Considering its prepubescent target audience,...

"Doctor Who" Getting New Faces
Potential Minor Spoilers Ahead

A BBC press release says that a fourteen-episode seventh season has now been confirmed for "Doctor Who" with Matt Smith to reprise the role of The Doctor for the entire run. Whether Smith will hang around for an eighth season in 2013 - the franchise's 50th Anniversary - is unknown.

The deal cements in place production on this year's Christmas special and a standard 13-episode season next year, but does not discuss whether things will be split (like this year) or go back to a 13-week run in either the Spring or Fall. A lot will likely depend on the ratings of the second half of season six.

Despite Smith's return, it's now looking highly likely that neither Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) or Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) will be joining him. The longest regular run for a companion since the show's return in 2005 has been two seasons,...

First look at We'll Take Manhattan
Doctor Who star Karen Gillan is currently filming as glamorous Sixties star Jean Shrimpton in We’ll Take Manhattan for BBC4.

The film focuses on the iconic star’s four-year love affair with photographer David Bailey. The part is Karen's first leading role since her debut in the 2010 series of Doctor Who as the Time Lord’s companion Amy Pond.

David Bailey is played by 24-year-old Welsh actor Aneurin Barnard (represented by Ken McReddie Associates) who starred in the original London cast of musical Spring Awakening and last year filmed Ironclad and Hunky Dory. He recently wrapped on Elfie Hopkins and the Gammons and is to star in Iain Softley's Trap for Cinderella, also filming this year.

Although predominantly set in 1962 and exploring the story of how Bailey and Shrimpton first met the drama also reveals how a young, visionary photographer refused to conform. He insisted on using the...

Karen Gillan teases huge revelation in Doctor Who 'that will change everything'
Karen Gillan has dropped dark hints about momentous events ahead in the new series of Doctor Who.

Karen, who plays Doctor's companion Amy Pond, was speaking on the set of the third episode, the pirate-themed The Curse Of The Black Spot.

Gillan admits this episode has been her favourite so far because of her 'piratey' costume and the fact she gets to do some sword fighting.

"Everyone was really nervous when I got a sword in my hand, and quite rightly so," she grins. "But actually, I was rather co-ordinated, which surprises you all, I bet.

"I really, really got into it, and I would like to take up sword-fighting as a hobby."

Gillan is clearly fond of the character and is keen to show she's more than just an action hero.

"With the last series, I wanted to keep her guarded. She doesn't like to show her emotions because she wants to be strong.

Emma Watson Dons Wardrobe Assistant Dress for 'My Week with Marilyn'
A first image of Emma Watson from her latest movie "My Week with Marilyn" has gone online. Brought out by The Daily Mail, the shot sees the actress, who is famous for portraying Hermione Granger in "Harry Potter", donning a chic cardigan as she plays Lucy, an assistant in the wardrobe department at Pinewood studios in 1956.

A biopic of Marilyn Monroe, the film is based on a memoir by Colin Clark, who worked as Laurence Olivier's assistant on the picture "The Prince And The Showgirl". He penned a diary that charted nine days of close contact with Marilyn. In the diary, he includes a story about skinny-dipping with the bombshell in the Thames and taking her to visit his godfather at Windsor Castle.

20-year-old Emma will star opposite Eddie Redmayne whose leading character Colin is dating hers. Joining Emma and Eddie in the cast ensemble are artists including Michelle Williams,...

First Look: Emma Watson In 'My Week With Marilyn'
Emma Watson
Harvey Weinstein Compares Emma Watson To Jean Shrimpton (Yeah, We Had To Look That One Up Too) So this is what Emma Watson looks like when she's playing someone other than Hermione. Watson has spent pretty much her entire career in the "Harry Potter" series but with that now coming to an end, the actress is, in a way, starting all over again and will have to prove herself to those (like this writer) who've barely paid attention to the boy wizard movies. Well, she's certainly surrounding herself with the right talent, as she recently wrapped work on "My Week…...
