Biography

    • Georgi Antonovich Shtil was born on March 4, 1932, in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) Russia. From 1956-1961 he studied acting at the Leningrad Institute of Theatre, Music and Cinematography, from which he graduated in 1961 as actor. Shtil made his film debut in 1960, and soon became a popular comedian in Russia.

      Since 1961 Georgi Shtil has been a permanent member of the legendary troupe of Bolshoi Drama Theatre (BDT) under directorship of Georgi Tovstonogov. Shtil worked with Tovstonogov for 28 years. After the death of Tovstonogov, Shtil continued his work with an outstanding ensemble of actors at BDT. There his stage partners were such stars as Oleg Basilashvili, Tatyana Doronina, Alisa Freyndlikh, Lyudmila Makarova, Svetlana Kryuchkova, Zinaida Sharko, Valentina Kovel, Innokentiy Smoktunovskiy, Sergey Yurskiy, Kirill Lavrov, Oleg Borisov, Vladislav Strzhelchik, Yefim Kopelyan, Evgeniy Lebedev, Vsevolod Kuznetsov, Pavel Luspekayev, Nikolay Trofimov, and many other remarkable Russian actors. Among Shtil's best known stage works are his roles in "Tri sestry" (The Three Sisters) by Anton Chekhov (1968), "Kholstomer" (Story of a Horse) by Lev Tolstoy, and "Revizor" (Inspector-General) by Nikolay Gogol.

      Georgi Shtil continues a busy acting career on stage and in film. His latest film work was in 'Master and Margarita', a TV series based on the eponymous book by Mikhail A. Bulgakov. Georgi Shtil was honored with the title of People's Artist of the USSR. He received numerous awards and decorations for his works on stage and in film. His filmography includes over 100 supporting and cameo roles, he also played over 100 roles on stage. He is living in St. Petersburg, Russia.
