Shrapnel: Hilary Swank to Star and Produce Film Adaptation of Sci-Fi Comic
Actress Hilary Swank is no stranger to playing strong women. Swank delves into the sci-fi genre with Radical Pictures in this next project, Shrapnel. The film adapts the sci-fi comic of the same name written by Nick Sagan and M. Zachary Sherman and created by Sagan and Mark Long.

Shrapnel takes place in 2250 and centers on “a former Solar Alliance Marine who organizes a revolt on Venus, the last free colony, against an oppressive solar government in order to fight for the freedom of her people.” The story is said to have “elements of a Western.”

According to Variety, Radical has snagged scribe Toby Wagstaff to write the script. A director has not been set yet though there is significant interest in the project by top directors. The project began as a trilogy of graphic novels through Radical Publishing. There is also an iPhone game based on Shrapnel.

Robert De Niro and John Travolta in Face à Face (2013)
Casting Bits: Zac Efron and Seth Rogen Team for R-Rated Comedy, Hilary Swank Joins ‘Shrapnel’, Bryan Cranston Pulls Out of ‘Gangster Squad’
Robert De Niro and John Travolta in Face à Face (2013)
[1] Zac Efron and Seth Rogen are set to team up for an untitled R-rated comedy based on a pitch by Judd Apatow associates Andrew Cohen and Brendan O'Brien. The pairing itself seems unlikely enough, but perhaps even more surprising is which role each actor will play -- in this film, it'll be funnyman Rogen who plays the straight man, while the clean-cut Efron tackles the part of a hard-partying frat boy. The story revolves around Rogen's character, a normal guy with the bad fortune to live next door to Efron's loud, obnoxious frat house. Rogen is also set to produce the film along with his partner Evan Goldberg. [Deadline [2]] After the jump, Hilary Swank picks up a graphic novel adaptation, while Ruben Fleischer's star-studded Gangster Squad loses a cast member. Hilary Swank will be boarding the comic book movie bandwagon with Shrapnel, based on a graphic novel written by Nick Sagan...

Hilary Swank joins the rebels in Shrapnel
By Michael Pellegrini

Comic Book adaptations show no sign of vanishing from the screen, and now Hilary Swank wants to make an entry into this booming genre.

One problem might be the shortage of strong female characters. Even DC's Wonder Woman has struggled to make a comeback on TV.

But Radical Comics has come to the rescue.

The award-winning actress from Million Dollar Baby is to be the star, as well as a producer, for a film version of its title Shrapnel.

Written by Nick Sagan and M. Zachary Sherman, the series follows an exiled soldier, Samantha 'Sam' Vijaya, who has sought refuge on Venus, our system's last free planet, in the year 2250. But when a war between the free rebellion on Venus and the Solar Alliance puts Sam in the middle of the conflict, she's forced to take up arms with the rebels and combat the Alliance.

Swank will...

Hilary Swank has signed on to star and produce “Shrapnel”, a sci-fi action movie that will be based on the comic book of the same name by Nick Sagan and M. Zachary Sherman, based on the concept by Sagan and Mark Long. Not to be mistaken with another action movie called “Shrapnel” by “Die Hard” director John McTiernan, the Swank version will find the “Million Dollar Baby” actress playing a former military officer who organizes a revolt on the planet Venus. Set in the year 2250, the story follows a former Solar Alliance Marine, to be played by Swank, who spearheads an uprising on Venus, the last free colony, against an oppressive solar government in order to fight for the freedom of her people. Toby Wagstaff will adapt the comic book for Radical Pictures, who also recently set up Joseph Kosinski’s sci-fi “Oblivion” at Universal. Like most comic book publishers...

Hilary Swank's Graphic New Gig
Hilary Swank
Hopefully Hilary Swank remembers a few of those boxing lessons, as she's about to enter a whole new world of fighting. Literally.

Variety reports that Swank will both produce and star in "Shrapnel," a big screen adaptation of the graphic novel trilogy by M. Zachary Sherman and Bagus Hutomo. An anti-establishment sci-fi opus, Amazon.com describes the first of the novels thusly:

Venus, 2250. After five years of war, the last free colony in the Solar System is about to fall. Unknown to the attacking Marines - or even the colonists themselves - the most infamous heroine of the war has gone into hiding in exile on their planet. Now she must organize a revolt against the very Marines she once fought alongside and lead the colonists to freedom.

Swank, a two-time Oscar winner (2004's "Million Dollar Baby," the aforementioned boxing film, and 1999's "Boys Don't Cry"), has had a bit...

Bradley Cooper to Play Satan, Stiller for 'Mitty', Swank for 'Shrapnel' and McTeigue Eyes the 'King'
Today's small nuggets of news are decent, but nothing mind-bending. I am interested to see what Alex Proyas will do with "Paradise Lost" and after V for Vendetta I continue to hope James McTeigue will have a repeat performance.

Bradley Cooper (The Hangover Part II) is set to star as Lucifer in Paradise Lost, an adaptation of John Milton's epic 1667 poem, for Alex Proyas (Knowing, Dark City) to direct. The story revolves around the fall of man and the classic battle of good vs. evil, telling along the way the story of Satan/Lucifer, the angel who tries to overthrow God, and the temptation of Adam and Eve and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. The film will be shot at Sydney's Fox Studios for an anticipated 2013 release. It's fascinating to see Legendary finally moving forward on this project having first reported on it five years ago when...

Sam Raimi to Helm Sci-Fi Wyatt Earp Film
Since we've known for a while that Sam Raimi won't be returning to the world of Spider-Man, news of the director's alternate projects come as pleasant surprises.  We already know that Raimi will be directing Oz, the Great and Powerful [1], a prequel of sorts of The Wizard of Oz, for Disney next.  After that, apparently Raimi will helm an update on the Wyatt Earp story, this time told in a futuristic sci-fi environment.  Heat Vision [2] describes it as "set in a future in which [Earp] takes on outlaws in a ravaged society where the only boomtown left is Las Vegas."  I would assume the story would include the traditional gunfight at the O.K. Corral and other standard events from the life of Earp, only changed to suit the new genre.  Titled Earp: Saints for Sinners, the movie will be adapted from a graphic novel written by M. Zachary Sherman and...

Sam Raimi to Direct Wyatt Earp Comic Adaptation
Sam Raimi's post-Spider-Man 4 workload continues to grow. Since the director departed the Spider-Man sequel, prompting Sony to reboot the franchise, Raimi has been lining up a variety of diverse projects, including World of Warcraft and a prequel to The Wizard of Oz called Oz: The Great and Powerful. Time to add another project to that list.

Deadline reports that Raimi is attached to yet another comic book adaptation, this time the Radical Studios comic Earp: Saints for Sinners. Created by writers Matt Cirulnick and M. Zachary Sherman, Earp takes the legendary western figure and places him in a futuristic society where Las Vegas is the only city where citizens can make any money. Sherman described the plot of the book to ComicBookResources in March.

Sam Raimi to Direct Wyatt Earp
Sam Raimi may not be doing another Spider-Man movie but that hasn’t stopped the man who made Sony millions of $$$$ from snatching another well known story in the form of Wyatt Earp.

Well, I say well known, I remember that it’s about a man with a gun and I’m sure Kevin Costner was involved once?!

Heatvision are reporting that:

Raimi is attached to direct “Earp: Saints for Sinners,” an adaptation of a Radical graphic novel that Mandeville Films partners David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman are producing for DreamWorks.

This movie will differ somewhat from the Costner version as it’ll be set in the future and is based on the graphic novel created by David Manpearl.

Heatvision gives us more:

The comic was created by Cirulnick and Mandeville exec David Manpearl. M. Zachary Sherman wrote it with Cirulnick, with illustrations by Mack Chater and Martin Montiel. Radical...

Sam Raimi to Direct ‘Earp: Saints for Sinners’
Sam Raimi is attached to direct Earp: Saints for Sinners, a futuristic sci-fi/western based on the graphic novel from Radical Comics. Dreamworks recently secured the rights and the deal will be announced officially at Radical’s San Diego Comic-Con panel this Thursday.

The comic is a futuristic re-imagining of the Western hero Wyatt Earp that finds him battling outlaws in Las Vegas. It’s written by M. Zachary Sherman and Matt Cirulnick with art by Mack Chater and Martin Montiel.

Radical’s publishing strategy has been to develop comics that are essentially pre-packaged for film adaptations. Other titles with movie deals in place include Damaged, Patriots, The Last Days of American Crime (which I highly recommend) and Oblivion. While this has drawn criticism from some readers and other publishers, at least Radical has always…

Sam Raimi Heads West For Wyatt Earp
He's a busy boy of late, but nothing can stop Sam Raimi getting a fistful of great films, and it sounds like he has done just that with his latest project Earp: Saints and Sinners.

Taking from the legendary gunslinger Wyatt Earp, this graphic novel property sets the stage in a dystopian future USA instead of the wilds of the Old West.

Put together for Radical Publishing by Matt Cirulnick (who has also penned the script), M Zachary Sherman and David Manpearl, the three-part series will be launched at this weekend's Comic-Con, and the news that Raimi is set to direct a film of it will no doubt give it a further massive push.

The comic sees Las Vegas as the one remaining beacon in an otherwise ruined world, with lawman Earp countering the attacks of outlaws and bandits in the wilds outside. However, his faith in justice is left...

The graphic novel was created by Matt Cirulnick and Mandeville Films’ David Manpearl, and written by Cirulnick and Zachary Sherman. Cirulnick will adapt the screenplay while executive producing.

Since getting scrubbed for Spider-man 4, Raimi hasn’t been attached to some high profile projects around town like the direct vidgame adaptation World of Warcraft for Legendary and Warner Bros., and he has been in talks with Disney direct a prequel called Oz, the Great and Powerful.

Currently, Radical Pictures has several feature adaptations of graphic novels, including Last Days of...

Sd Comic-Con '10: Thank the Heavens! Sam Raimi Goes Post-Apocalyptic With 'Earp'!
Just in time for Comic-Con, Sam Raimi has signed to helm and produce a pic based on graphic novel Earp: Saints For Sinners for DreamWorks, Radical Studios, Mandeville and Raimi's Star Road Entertainment. While it's unclear how dark the project is, "Earp: Saints for Sinners" is a modern-day re-imagining of Western hero Wyatt Earp fighting outlaws in a ravaged society where the only boomtown left is Las Vegas. "Earp" was created by Matt Cirulnick and Mandeville Films' David Manpearl, and written by Cirulnick and Zachary Sherman. Cirulnick, who will unveil artwork and story details at Radical's panel at Comic-Con on Thursday, will adapt. This is such a nice departure from Spider-Man and the potential War Craft. This is the area I love to see Raimi working in. You?...

News: Dean Parisot May Direct "Seal Team Seven"
I consider myself a casual comic book fan. Back in the day, before I had a job and a wife and a house and hobbies and, you know, a life, I was a junkie. I spent every day reading comics, would ride my piece of shit Bmx bike to the comic book store every Saturday and spend every dime I had on them. So it's rather refreshing to see comic books being adapted into movies, and in many cases, being done well.

That said, in the effort to capitalize on the trend, producers and directors are mining every comic book in existence these days. It's not always a bad thing -- we're getting some fun looking films out of some of the more obscure ones -- Kick Ass, Ghost World, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World -- all lesser known comics, all pretty good to great films (although the jury's still out on Scott Pilgrim,...

Does The Military Find Atlantis In 'Seal'?
Director Dean Parisot has been making his name in comedy with films like "Home Fries" and "Fun With Dick And Jane" and has a project coming up with "The Office" star Ed Helms titled "Central Intelligence".  But it appears Parisot is steeping away from that genre for his next film.

It is being reported that Parisot will direct "Seal" based on the novel by M. Zachary Sherman, "Socom: Seal Team Seven".  The book is about a team of Navy Seals who are sent to investigate a sunken submarine in the persian gulf... and the mythical lost city of Atlantis is somehow involved.

There is no word yet on cast or timetables.

Comedy Director Parisot Changing Pace With Graphic Novel Adaptation
Director Dean Parisot has a little bit of time on his hands right now, since his planned comedy with Ed Helms Central Intelligence has been delayed thanks to Helms being one of the most popular actors out there. But Parisot, whose credits include comedies like Home Fries and Fun With Dick And Jane, isn't just using the free time to make the same old same old-- he's changing pace entirely with a graphic novel adaptation. The Los Angeles Times reports that Parisot plans to adapt M. Zachary Sherman's graphic novel Socom: Seal Team Seven, which isn't about your usual superheroes or creatures. The Times describes Parisot's adaptation, called simply Seal, as "a political action film that mixes the Tom Clancy submarine thriller with a dollop of fanboy fantasy intrigue." The novel follows a Navy Seal team investigating a sunken submarine in the Persian Gulf that also, somehow, involves Atlantis.

Parisot In Charge Of "Seal Team Seven"
Dean Parisot ("Galaxy Quest," "Fun with Dick and Jane") is in talks to direct the underwater action/fantasy thriller "Seal Team Seven" for Walden Media reports The Los Angeles Times.

Based on the M. Zachary Sherman-created 2006 graphic novel "Socom: Seal Team Seven", the story follows CIA tactician Douglas Griffin who joins his former Seal team to investigate the reason behind a submarine's downing in the Persian Gulf.

Their investigation leads to a battle that pits the U.S. Navy against the underwater Kingdom of Atlantis in a full-blown war against humanity's extinction.

Parisot was scheduled to shoot the comedy "Central Intelligence" this Summer but that project has been put on hold.

Dean Parisot Circling Seal Team Seven
The Fun With Dick and Jane director is in talks to take on M. Zachary Sherman's graphic novel We reported a few weeks ago that director Dean Parisot's film project Central Intelligence was being put on hold and now it seems the director has found a new project to take on. The Los Angeles Times is reporting that Parisot is in talks to direct the film Seal Team Seven.

The film will be an adaptation of M. Zachary Sherman's 2006 graphic novel, Socom: Seal Team Seven, which centers on an elite Seal team that is sent in to investigate a submarine that sunk in the Persian Gulf and then have to battle forces from the mythical underwater world of Atlantis.

It wasn't said if there was a writer attached to the film as of yet or when production was looking to get started. Parisot's previous credits include the...

Dean Parisot Considering Seal Team Seven
M. Zachary Sherman
There was a time when the adventures of the Navy Seals (the SEa, Air and Land team, in case you ever wondered) were largely consigned to dodgy early ‘90s action movies starring Charlie Sheen. But now it would appear they’re making a return, with Galaxy Quest director Dean Parisot considering Seal Team Seven.According to the La Times, the film would adapt M Zachary Sherman’s 2006 graphic novel Socom: Seal Team Seven, which sees the titular force investigating a downed submarine in the Persian Gulf.Things take a turn for the fantastical when the troops discover that the underwater kingdom of Atlantis might have been behind the sunken sub and that the city’s forces don’t take kindly to armed strangers.Walden Media is developing the film version, though there’s no word on a studio picking it up directly yet. But Parisot is certainly now available, since...

Navy Seals vs. Atlantis! Yup, Could Happen.
Based on M. Zachary Sherman’s 2006 graphic novel “Socom: Seal Team Seven,” the movie version would pit a squadron of Navy SEALs investigating a downed submarine in the Persian Gulf against warriors of the ancient city of Atlantis with the fate of mankind in the balance. You know, the same-o comic book stuff. And it may all be coming to you courtesy of Dean Parisot, the director of “Fun with Dick and Jane” and “Galaxy Quest”. This one, though, will be a straight action/military movie, unless of course Jim Carrey gets cast. Here’s more on the premise of the original book by Sherman and artist Robert de la Torre via Amazon: When a submarine is mysteriously downed in the Persian Gulf, CIA tactician Douglas Griffin is reactivated into his former Seal team to investigate. Simultaneously, a string of mystifying attacks pits the U.S. Navy against the underwater...

'Underworld' Director Len Wiseman To Helm 'Shrapnel' Movie
A local comic book shop may have been Radical Comics' best recruitment tool for finding a director to adapt their comic book property "Shrapnel." Len Wiseman, who wrote and directed the first two "Underworld" movies, claims to have found an issue on the shelf at a store where he was perusing comics with his 11-year old daughter. Though she probably wasn't the target demographic for the book's tatteredly-clothed, tattoo-faced heroine, Wiseman immediately latched on to the story.

"I am really drawn to the reluctant-hero story," Wiseman told The Hollywood Reporter, comparing the character to Bruce Willis' John McClane in "Live Free or Die Hard."

"Shrapnel," which was created by M. Zachary Sherman and Bagus Hutomo, depicts a future where humans live all over the solar system governed by a body called the Solar Alliance. Venus, the book's central figure, is a former Marine who chooses to live on her...

Uncle Sam Wants You To Read The Official ‘America’s Army’ Comic Book
The U.S. Commander-in-Chief Barack Obama already has his own comics, so it stands to reason that his troops in the U.S. Army deserve a piece of the spotlight, too. The same armed forces who originally inspired G.I. Joe and Sgt. Rock will now get their own title published by the U.S. Army.

“America’s Army” is the title of the new book, available to read free online at AmericasArmy.com by the people who originally published the video game of the same name.

The 26-page comic book tells the story of U.S. troops’ incursion into a fictional country called Democratic Republic of the Ostregals, and as GamePolitics.com points out, it’s likely to stir up controversy regarding the use of pop culture media as a military recruitment tool.

Basically a modern-day version of Bucky appearing in the pages of Captain America urging young recruits to fight for their country,...
