‘Lady of the Law’ Blu-ray Review (88 Films)
Image
Stars: Shih Szu, Lo Lieh, Dean Shek, Shen Chan, Lin Tung, Pei-Shan Chang | Written and Directed by Shen Chiang

During their illustrious careers, the Shaw Brothers brought so much entertainment to the world. And they were not afraid to think outside the box and have a female character be the lead. This happened many times in their films. Films like Lady with a Sword and Lady Assassin.

88 Films have been releasing a lot of the Shaw Brothers films on Blu-ray for a while now, and it is time for yet another strong female-led movie to get a deluxe Blu-ray release, and that film is 1975’s Lady of the Law.

A dangerous criminal escapes captivity – but luckily crime-busting super swords-woman Leng Rushuang is on his trail. However, she has doubts about his guilt, and she’s not going to stop fighting until she’s sure the right man is being punished.

Film Review: The Black Tavern (1972) by Yip Wing Cho
Wei Lo
Mainland-born Yip Wing Cho began his career at Shaw Brothers Studio as a photography assistant under director Lo Wei, working on titles like “Raw Courage”, “The Golden Sword” (1969), and “Brothers Five” (1970). He later transitioned to directing with “Girl of Ghost Valley”, starring Hsing Hui, and “The Black Tavern”, both from scripts written by his father, Yip Yat Fong. During the revival of Cantonese cinema, Yip spent his later career acting in numerous romantic comedies and crime thrillers.

“The Black Tavern” tells a simple story about a group of thieves attempting to rob a governor at a remote tavern. The unique story begins in a bustling restaurant in a small town. A wandering monk (Dean Shek) enters, singing and begging his way from table to table. His song reveals that retired governor Hai Gong Feng (Yang Chi Ching) is traveling with a chest full of diamonds and...

Film Review: A Better Tomorrow II (1987) by John Woo
Image
In 1986, a virtually unknown film with a tight budget became a blockbuster and broke box office records in Hong Kong and Asia. The film, “A Better Tomorrow” also made its star Chow Yun Fat an overnight success and launched him into the big league of the Asian film industry. Furthermore it also gave co-star, a Shaw Brothers veteran, Ti Lung‘s career a much welcoming boost.

After the huge success of its predecessor, a sequel with the same cast returning soon hit the big screens. The filmmakers had to bring Chow back due to his popularity. The problem was, they killed off Mark, the character he played in the previous film, so he returns as Ken, Mark’s long lost twin brother. John Woo was also back as director but it was a troubled shoot since producer Tsui Hark was...

10 Kung Fu Movies Where The Student Defeats The Master
Image
The classic dynamic of the student and the master has long been a cornerstone of kung fu cinema, often culminating in the student overtaking and defeating the person who gifted them with their martial arts skills. This can be seen through literal battles where the student surpasses their teacher's ability and beats them for the first time. However, in other kung fu movies, the defeat can be more symbolic as they utilize the skills they have been given to go further than their teacher was ever capable of, and in the process, the student becomes the master.

Many of the greatest kung fu movies have featured a student-versus-master dynamic, whether that was a bright-eyed kid on a quest for glory or a more withered hero who was thrust into greatness. Many of the greatest martial arts movie stars have played essential roles in these types of stories, as the growth...

Film Review: A Queen’s Ransom (1976) by Ting Shan-hsi
Image
The success of Bruce Lee's films on the international scene saw several attempts over the years by Golden Harvest to try and recapture the lightning in a bottle. Some saw efforts to launch a new star, others like “A Queen's Ransom” featuring recognizable “talent” from the west. George Lazenby whilst not a big star at the time was still a “name” having appeared as 007 in “On Her Majesty's Secret Service”. So, it feels somehow apt that he was cast as the terrorist out to kill her here. Backed up by Jimmy Wang Yu and Angela Mao it should on the surface have been a bigger deal. With Eureka Entertainment releasing it on Blu Ray we can discover for ourselves whether it deserves to be.

Film Review: Warriors Two (1978) by Sammo Hung
Image
If Wing Chun had a sponsor in cinema before the endless Ip Man movies, then it would be Sammo Hung. With “The Prodigal Son” he made what many would consider the definitive Wing Chun movie. Yet three years before, he also helmed another fictional version of the real-life exponent Leung Jan, only this time at the latter stages of his life. “Warriors Two” whist the lesser of the two, remains an interesting part of the Sammo Hung filmography, as it’s the transition from the more traditional form of martial arts movies, to his increasingly varied work that was to follow

Film Review: They Came to Rob Hong Kong (1989) by Clarence Fok
Image
Comedy is such a tricky thing to get right. Different languages and cultures mean that what plays well in one country may be incomprehensible to another. Slapstick is therefore more universal as visually it is easier to understand. With “They Came to Rob Hong Kong” we potentially have a classic example of what Hong Kong did so well in the golden era. That gelling together of fast paced action and knockabout humour that is unlike anything seen elsewhere. With a solid cast of both comedians and action stars, what could possibly go wrong?

Rick (Roy Cheung) barely escapes being captured by the police headed up by the Superintendent (Kara Hui). Plotting revenge, he hires a motley collection of misfits in China to use as a diversion from his actual intentions. Bringing them back to Hong Kong, he plans for them to rob a bank whilst he captures a politician and the superintendent.

The Incendiary Cinema of Ringo Lam
Ringo Lam’s death this past December 29 at the age of 63 sparked outpourings of appreciation from across the world, with attention in America focused mostly on his two most famous films, City on Fire (1987) and Full Contact (1992), each of which were elevated to the canon in the days when Hong Kong movies could be found here for the most part only on cheap, imported, usually dubbed VHS tapes in the country’s more adventurous video stores. City on Fire was famous more as the inspiration for Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs (1992) than on its own merits, while Full Contact delivered all the gory nihilistic charms of a grindhouse cinema that was vastly more alive than anything Hollywood ever bothered to produce. But there’s much more to Lam’s work than cheap thrills and story material for directorial magpies. Ringo Lam was part of a remarkable generation of filmmakers, working...

Sammo Hung: Upcoming Movies 2016
Sammo Hung has been involved in Martial Arts since childhood and even at the ripe old age of 64, he doesn’t seem to be slowing down (Thank god). It was great to see Sammo back in big movies over the past few years, which includes Rise Of The Legend and Once Upon A Time In Shanghai, both made in 2014.

Here are three upcoming Sammo Hung movies to look forward too this year and fingers crossed he works one more time with Peking opera brothers Jackie Chan and Yuen Biao, before they retire.

*Jackie Chan was set to play the lead role in My Beloved Bodyguard, but due to filming Dragon Blade he couldn’t make the movie. Andy Lau stepped in the role later on.

100 Great Kung Fu Movies – Part 5 (20-1)
When it comes to making features like this one, i love the idea of coming up with my own personal “100 Great Kung Fu Movies” of all time. It is tough choosing just 100 because you know there are many more great Kung Fu movies that are not on the list.

I understand everyone will have their own personal favorites and some may not agree with my list and that’s fine because it’s nice to have different opinions on this genre which keeps it fresh and alive when having good debates.

Anyway, thank you for taking time to have a look at my 100 Great Kung Fu movie list and feel free to add any movies in the comment box if they don’t make my list (I have probably forgotten many movies).

Number 1 is based on the choreography and overall movie which to me is a prime example of of...

100 Great Kung Fu Movies – Part 3 (59-40)
When it comes to making features like this one, i love the idea of coming up with my own personal “100 Great Kung Fu Movies” of all time. It is tough choosing just 100 because you know there are many more great Kung Fu movies that are not on the list.

I have decided that to make the list, a movie must have a few hand to hand moments during fight scenes in the movies chosen. If for example its mainly sword play with one fight scene hand to hand it won’t make the list. Its old school “style” Kung Fu movies, not modern day settings.

I understand everyone will have their own personal favorites and some may not agree with my list and that’s fine because it’s nice to have different opinions on this genre which keeps it fresh and alive when having good debates.

I want to name a few of my favorite end fight scenes and please feel free to comment below, your favorite fight scenes and maybe they will be added to the future features.

‘The Black Tavern’ is a rollicking, must-visit destination for fans
The Black Tavern

Written by Yip Yat-Fong

Directed by Teddy Yip Wing-Cho

Hong Kong, 1972

Sometimes, it’s best for filmmakers to toss all their eggs into one basket, to throw everything into their picture save the kitchen sink, to go out all guns blazing. When the opportunity presents itself to make something really out of the ordinary or, at the very least, a bit off-kilter when juxtaposed against the legion of competing pictures, why forsake that chance? If the final product fails to connect with viewers, the creative team may nevertheless take solace in the fact that they showed an iota of courage in avoiding complacency. Indeed, history carries with it a number of examples of extravagantly idiosyncratic productions that failed to resonate in any shape or form, Richard Kelly’s Southland Tales being an oft-cited one. In the Shaw Brothers catalogue, the sheer volume of films that more or...

Kingofkungfu – Leung Kar Yan – Top 10 Movies
Leung Kar Yan was born 20 January 1949, also known as “Beardy”, is a Hong Kong actor and director and despite being one of the most well-known faces in Hong Kong action cinema, he had no kind of martial arts training, relying on his talents to imitate the moves shown to him by the action directors on the set.

Leung Kar Yan has made so many classic kung fu movies, that this was a hard choice to put in order a Top 10, but here goes, i hope you all like it and please feel free to comment at the bottom of the page and also add your own if i miss your favorite out.

10.His Name Os Nobody

I really enjoyed this movie, there are some funny moments throughout the movie and although the kung fu isn’t really the main part of the movie till towards the end, it is still very enjoyable.

This makes impersonating Chaplin tricky, because charisma, wit and vulnerability can't be thrown on like a tatty bowler hat.

Here's five Chaplain copycats giving it their best, and doing their damnedest to make a right Charlie of themselves:

1) Hong...
