Tom Cruise can count on one hand the number of cinematic failures and box office bombs he's suffered in his illustrious 40-year Hollywood career. While some anticipated releases may have underperformed relative to their forecasts, no Cruise movie ranks as a bigger commercial black eye than Legend, the 1985 fantasy film directed by revered filmmaker Ridley Scott.
In Legend, Cruise plays Jack in the Green, a pure forest child who protects his lover Princess Lili (Mia Sara) from Blix, The Lord of Darkness (Alice Playten). A classic woodland fairytale full of ghouls and goblins, Legend was both a box office bomb and a critical misfire. It also marked the last time Cruise made a fantasy film and the only time Cruise and Ridley Scott collaborated. As Legend turns 40 next year, it's time for a closer look at the notorious Ridley Scott/Tom Cruise hiccup.

Viggo Mortensen is widely recognized for his epic portrayal of Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings. Many of the scenes in the franchise were taken outdoors, boasting the beauty of nature in their set location in New Zealand.

Boats, as beautiful as they are, were pretty tippy. They were kind of flimsy in a way, and because of the scale issue, it was… Kiran Shah, you know, who was Frodo.

A video game adaptation that may have been released a bit ahead of its time is back to streaming on Netflix. As of July 1, Warcraft was made available to watch again on the popular streaming platform.
Warcraft fell short of reaching its box office expectations, given its high budget, and it was not seen as a big financial success. The critics were also unkind to the movie, giving the video game adaptation a Rotten Tomatoes score of 29%. However, filmgoers enjoyed the movie much more than the critics, as it holds a much higher audience score of 76%. Warcraft has also developed a cult following in the years since its release in 2016, seen by many as one of the more underrated video game films.

Kiran Shah speaks about his long and wonderful career as a stuntman in films such as Superman and Lord of the Rings.
It may not be hyperbole to say that Shah has appeared in more blockbusters than anyone else in the world. He broke down his storied career in an interview with The Guardian. Ever since he was a kid, Shah wanted to be an actor. When I was about six or seven," he said. "I used to take the mickey out of my uncle. It’s October, so it’s time for two things: pumpkin spice on everything and the start of Christmas marketing. And just in time, the Norwegian holiday horror-comedy There’s Something in the Barn makes its world premiere at Fantastic Fest.
Bill inherits his uncle’s house in Norway after the man dies in a freak accident. We, of course, know it was no accident, and soon enough so will Bill, his wife and Bill’s kids Nora and Lucas (Townes Bunner) will too.
They relocate from California to Norway with plans to open a bed and breakfast, but complications ensue. Both in the obvious cultural differences and, more ominously, what Lucas discovers living in the barn.

Christmas horror movies don’t come around too often, but every now and then we get gems like Black Christmas, Gremlins, Rare Exports and Krampus. Magnus Martens‘ evil elf horror comedy There’s Something in the Barn tries to hit that holiday horror comedy sweet spot that falls somewhere between Gremlins and Krampus, but misses the mark on both counts. It winds up being a forgettable, if mildly amusing, movie that doesn’t seem to know which audience it’s playing to.

Happy Halloween, dear readers! Whether you’ll be out trick-or-treating, at home giving out candy, going to parties, or something else entirely, I hope you enjoy the holiday. Now, let’s take a look at the official trailer for the biggest movie of the rest of the year, Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.
Premise: The Force Awakens is set approximately thirty years after the events of Return of the Jedi (1983), and features new leads Finn (John Boyega), Rey (Daisy Ridley), and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) alongside characters returning from the previous Star Wars films.
My take: I love Star Wars, I’m excited for this, let’s get into it.
0:08-0:16: Rey (Daisy Ridley) exploring what is presumably the wrecked Star Destroyer we saw in the second teaser. Her protective gear is reminiscent of both the Tusken Raiders/Sand People and Leia’s bounty hunter...

And that is the trouble with hype, ladies and gentleman. Ever since the script and rough cut were leaked, Listen has been quietly talked up in fan circles (and more recently in the press) as one of Steven Moffat’s best episodes and also one of his scariest. A pair of accolades that it in no way lives up to.
While there’s nothing that makes Listen a noticeably bad episode, there’s also nothing that really takes it above being average. And the thing that really holds it back from having the chance of living up to its hype is that it’s far too scattershot

Today, we have our first look at the second movie, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, arriving in theaters next December. Yesterday, we reported that the filmmaker and Warner Bros. are currently in "accelerated talks" to make a third movie happen sometime next summer. Along with the rights to J.R.R. Tolkien's novel, the filmmakers acquired rights to the author's appendices, unpublished notes that expand this Middle Earth universe even more.

During Comic-Con a few weeks ago, a Warner Bros. rep shot down rumors that Peter Jackson's two-part Middle Earth prequel, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again, will be expanded into a trilogy. Today, we have a new report claiming the director is in "accelerated" talks with the studio about making a third movie.
The filmmaker has said that he shot an abundance of material that he would not be able to fit into both movies, which sparked speculation that a third movie may be in the works. Warner Bros. is now reportedly on board with the proposal, if they can make it for the right price, since new deals will have to be negotiated with cast members. At any rate, a decision must be made very soon, according to an unidentified source close to the production.

Fans were expecting director Peter Jackson to announce a third The Hobbit film during Saturday's planned The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey panel. A Studio spokesperson has come forward to preemptively strike down those hopes and dreams.
This is what was said.
"[There are] no planned or surprise announcements. The plan was always for two."
The rumor started to spread about a third film due to the fact that Peter Jackson has shot way more footage than he can use in two movies. It is a very feasible idea, and Warner Bros. would be able to recoup more of the production cost.
Alas, unless that studio spokeperson is lying to keep the announcement a surprise, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again are the only two Hobbit movies we're going to be seeing in the near future.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has been in production for several months already in New Zealand, but it's never too late to add one more cast member. Scottish actor Billy Connolly has joined The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey as the mighty dwarf Dain Ironfoot, a cousin of Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage). Here's what director Peter Jackson had to say about his final cast member.
""We could not think of a more fitting actor to play Dain Ironfoot, the staunchest and toughest of Dwarves, than Billy Connolly, the Big Yin himself. With Billy stepping into this role, the cast of The Hobbit is now complete. We can't wait to see him on the Battlefield!"
Peter Jackson is shooting both The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and its follow-up, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, back-to-back. It isn't said if Dain Ironfoot will appear in both movies, but it seems likely he will...

Director Peter Jackson is in the midst of production on The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again in New Zealand. According to actress Evangeline Lilly, who plays Tauriel in both adventures, the back-to-back shoot will take two years to complete.
"I still have to go back for five more months of filming. (I've been there) on and off for the past six months. It's a two-year shoot in total for both films, and my contract had me blocked off for about a year. I come in and out of New Zealand throughout that year."
She also spoke more about her character Tauriel, a Mirkwood elf who appears to be quite dangerous.
"Yes, she is a warrior. She's actually the head of the Elven guard. She's the big shot in the army. So she knows how to wield any weapon, but the primary weapons that she...

Rise of the Planet of the Apes is available on Blu-ray and DVD this week. To celebrate the anticipated release of this smash hit prequel, we caught up with senior visual effects supervisor Joe Letteri to discuss the film's remarkable achievements in creating realistic, life-like apes. Andy Serkis, who brought the film's star Ape Caesar to life, is currently collaborating with Joe Letteri once again for The Hobbit: There and Back Again.
We asked Joe about the evolution of Gollum in The Hobbit: There and Back Again. This is what he had to say.
"Without getting into what he is going to look like on screen, and everything, because we are saving that...Technically, what has been good about this, is that we did Gollum the first time around, and it was the first time that we were doing performance capture in a film. But we couldn't record on the stage.

Director Peter Jackson updated his Facebook page today to talk about how The Hobbit won't be coming to Comic-Con International this year.
"Good news and bad news today. Bad news is that we won't be doing any The Hobbit presentation at Comic Con in San Diego this year. New Line and Warner Bros were very happy to support a presentation, but I declined, simply because I felt it was too early. There's so much more of the films still to shoot. I just wanted to get that out there, because I've seen various references to the possibility of something Hobbity at Comic-Con. Hate to disappoint anyone. But something tells me we will be there in force next year.
Now for the good news...
We've just finished a new video blog, covering a little more of the first block of shooting. So please enjoy this-at least you don't have to travel...

Warner Bros. Pictures have revealed two more dwarves from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again. Get your first look at John Callen as Oin and Peter Hambleton as Gloin.
Distant cousins of Thorin Oakenshield, these two doughty Northern Dwarves join the Company out of a sense of loyalty to their kin, and also because they have a substantial sum of money invested in the venture. Along with Bombur, Gloin is the only other married Dwarf in the Company (there being a shortage of female dwarves in general). His wife is an acclaimed beauty with a particularly fine beard. Gloin is the proud father of a young son, Gimli, who will go on to become part of the famous Fellowship of the Ring.

The second film, titled "The Hobbit: There and Back Again," is slated for release the following year, on December 13, 2013.

The Hobbit has headed into production, and Ian McKellen, who reprises his role as Gandalf in both this prequel and the as-yet untitled The Hobbit Sequel, was nearby the set. He was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Martin Freeman doing a screen test as Bilbo Baggins in 3D, and he has shared his thoughts with fans.
"I've seen Bilbo - in three dimensions.

I was visiting old friends in the Stone Street offices and heard Martin Freeman was just round the corner by the permanent green screen, done up as Bilbo, testing his costume in front of the 3D cameras. Indeed, there he was in the open air, mostly oblivious to the camera, though turning this way and that as required. Martin improvised a hobbity gait, padding back and forth, testing his big hairy Hobbit feet, pointy ears and little tum.

Yesterday I went along to experience my first ever UK film convention. Earlier this year, I visited Wondercon in the Us which is the baby sister of the daddy of all movie conventions, Comic Con which is held annually in San Diego. Memorabilia is the smaller convention to the big McM Expo which takes place in London in October and since I’d missed that, I thought id try and go along to this one at the NEC in Birmingham.
I didn’t really know what to expect but as we arrived, 501st Legion were organising all the costumed characters from numerous movies (primarily Star Wars) that were present at the show which served as a rather cool welcome! The Hobbit movies coming in the 3D formatThe Hobbit and The Hobbit Sequel will be in 3D after all, according to The New York Times.
In March, then-director Guillermo del Toro had said there was a possibility that the two back-to-back prequels could be in 3D, as the studio wanted to utilized the format. But there were also conflicting reports that neither The Hobbit nor The Hobbit Sequel would be in 3D, as they were meant to be more intimate and modest movies, shot on a smaller scale than The Lord of the Rings Trilogy.
With the huge success of recent 3D blockbusters such as Avatar and Alice in Wonderland, it has now been decided that both The Hobbit and The Hobbit Sequel will definitely be presented in 3D when they are released. Though, it is not clear at this time if the films will be shoot in the immersive format,...

The studio are working out what that deal would look like, because how else do they know if it's a viable option? But it's honestly one of several different options - many irons are in the fire right now.

Peter Jackson directing the Hobbit? We reported earlier this month that MGM and Warner Bros. were not pursuing other directors for a highly-anticipated two-part film until they heard a definitive answer from Peter Jackson and now it seems that answer is yes. Deadline New York is reporting that Peter Jackson is now in negotiations to direct both The Hobbit and The Hobbit Sequel.
The site is also reporting that securing Jackson as the director could be an important step in getting MGM to lock down a shooting schedule that would have the film begin production by the end of this year.
Several directors had been mentioned to take over the film once Guillermo del Toroleft the film at the end of May, but it seems that the man who started The Lord of the Rings franchise is now in line to direct these prequel films.
We'll be sure to update...

Peter Jackson open to directing The Hobbit Just one day after we reported that Guillermo del Toro had decided to step down as director of The Hobbit and The Hobbit Sequel over frustration with repeated delays, Peter Jackson is already considering directing the project.
Jackson talked with Dominion Post about the possibility of directing:
"If that's what I have to do to protect Warner Bros' investment, then obviously that's one angle which I'll explore," he said. But stepping in as director would be difficult as he had signed writer and director contracts with Hollywood studios for two other films, with one likely to begin next year. "The other studios may not let me out of the contracts."
Jackson and partner Fran Walsh, The Hobbit's executive producers, learned of del Toro's decision Saturday. Jackson said he was saddened by the director's departure, which was "amicable". del Toro plans to stay on as screenwriter.

Guillermo Del Toro steps down as The Hobbit director Through TheOneRing.net, Guillermo Del Toro and Peter Jackson announced today that Del Toro is stepping down as director for the upcoming adaptation of The Hobbit and it's proposed sequel, but will continue to co-write the screenplays.
"In light of ongoing delays in the setting of a start date for filming The Hobbit I am faced with the hardest decision of my life", says Guillermo. "After nearly two years of living, breathing and designing a world as rich as Tolkien's Middle Earth, I must, with great regret, take leave from helming these wonderful pictures. I remain grateful to Peter, Fran and Philippa Boyens, New Line and Warner Brothers and to all my crew in New Zealand. I've been privileged to work in one of the greatest countries on earth with some of the best people ever in our craft and my life will be forever changed.
