Making It Feel Real: Scientific Consultants Panel at Sloan Summit
Image
In a power-packed weekend of seminars, panels and pitch sessions, hundreds of filmmakers gathered from the four corners of the earth (technical term) to celebrate the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation’s pioneering science and technology film program.

On Saturday afternoon, Film Independent assembled a panel of science consultants and storytellers to explore the delicate balance between technical accuracy and effective storytelling. What’s it like to consult on a show or a movie?

Maybe not as uppity and exacting as we might expect.

“We’re not the science police,” commented David Saltzberg (The Big Bang Theory), “it’s their story.” Saltzberg embraces his supporting role as a noticer of inconsistencies and a suggester of solutions – as do the four other science experts joining him on the panel moderated by IndieWire writer and critic, Ritesh Mehta.

From Star Trek to The Resident, read on for a fun peek behind the curtain...

Michelle Yeoh to Lead Stylized Action Film ‘The Surgeon’ From ‘The Resident’ Co-Creator Roshan Sethi and ‘John Wick’ Collaborators, 193 Launching in Cannes
Image
Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh is set to do some ass kicking in scrubs as the lead in newly-announced stylized action film “The Surgeon.”

The feature — hoped to be the first in a franchise — is being introduced to buyers in Cannes by Patrick Wachsberger’s 193.

“The Surgeon” comes from writer/director Rohsan Sethi, who also happens to be a physician, and extends a history of successful action collaborations for Wachsberger and producer Basil Iwankyk, who previously combined on “John Wick,” which Iwankyk produced and Wachsberger distributed as chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group.

In the film, Yeoh will play a retired surgeon who is abducted and forced to operate on a mystery patient. Though greatly outnumbered, her captors have overlooked her greatest weapon: 35 years of surgical experience, leading to what the synopsis describes as an “explosive and brutal confrontation” during which she outwits and cuts down her enemies “in a...

Pic is written and directed by Roshan Sethi, a physician, Indie Spirit winner, and co-creator of hit Fox series The Resident. WME independent is representing domestic rights.

The film will follow a retired surgeon (Yeoh) who is abducted and forced to operate on a mystery patient. Though greatly outnumbered, her captors have overlooked her greatest weapon: 35-years of surgical experience, leading to an explosive and brutal confrontation during which she outwits and cuts down her enemies in a visual style that defies anything you have seen before. “In Many Ways, It Felt Like a Dream Job”: A Nice Indian Boy Star Karan Soni and Director Roshan Sethi Discuss How Their Real-Life Relationship Made Their Gay Rom-Com Work (Interview)
Image
Real-life partners Karan Soni and Roshan Sethi are the creative forces behind their gay Indian rom-com, A Nice Indian Boy. After a premiere in March 2024 at South by Southwest, the film finally hit theaters on April 4.

We at FandomWire spoke with the director and star about why Deadpool and Wolverine and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse star Soni’s chemistry with co-star Jonathan Groff works, why this film was so impactful to Sethi, and why movies are so important.

‘A Nice Indian Boy’ Review: This Charming Interracial Rom-Com Packs a Bollywood Twist
Image
Editor’s Note: This review was originally published during the 2024 SXSW Film & TV Festival. Wayfarer Studios releases “A Nice Indian Boy” in select theaters Friday, April 4.

I did not have Jonathan Groff singing “Tujhe Dekha To Yeh Jana Sanam” on my 2024 bingo card. The Broadway actor humbly steps into Indian culture in Roshan Sethi’s “A Nice Indian Boy,” which repeatedly connects back to Aditya Chopra’s “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” — the film that originated “Tujhe Dekha”.

Written by Eric Randall (and based on Madhuri Shekar’s play), “A Nice Indian Boy” is all about subverting stereotypes about Indian culture, both within and outside of the community. The title itself is a cheeky twist on every aunty’s favorite refrain: that when a girl is of the right age, she or her family will find her a “nice Indian boy” to settle down with.

This time, however, protagonist Naveen (Karan Soni...

The Final Days of Technicolor: Inside a Band of Employees’ 72-Hour Race to Launch New Company Arc Creative (Exclusive)
Image
A month ago, on Friday, Feb. 21, Technicolor began to alert employees that it was in dire financial trouble and could (and did) begin to shut down that Monday. The stunning collapse of the iconic century-old company sent shockwaves through the industry, affecting its brands and thousands of employees around the world, as well as their customers.

Paris-headquartered Technicolor had reorganized several times in recent years and when it closed it was the parent company of VFX giant Mpc, commercial VFX studio The Mill, Mikros Animation and Technicolor Gaming. None were headquartered in the U.S. but all maintained either domestic studio operations or points of contact.

“Just like that, the place where we had poured the majority of our professional careers and passion — our creative home — was gone,” says Robert Sethi, who was executive creative director at The Mill’s Los Angeles base. But he and additional members of The Mill’s U.

A Nice Indian Boy (2024) ‘Palm Springs Film Festival’ Movie Review: Roshan Sethi’s Queer Romcom is One of the Year’s Warmest, Most Disarming Films
Roshan Sethi
Indian marriages go beyond individual assertions of love to include the jostling familial structures of acceptance and refusal. Then there’s the pervasive influence of Bollywood. Bollywood and Indian culture are so enmeshed the two invariably cast themselves against identity and what celebration of oneself may resemble. The yarn of resistance to private desire gets scrambled furthermore once queerness enters the fold. Roshan Sethi’s new film, “A Nice Indian Boy,” unravels this twine, weaving between the modest and spectacular.

Naveen has almost reclined into accepting he, being gay, may never get to have his own big, fat Indian wedding. He’s lonely, terribly tongue-tied at the slightest sight of any probable romantic connection. He has built all these guardrails around him, nervous to admit his desire. As reserved as he is about expressing his feelings, a photographer who instantly captures his heart, Jay is unabashed in his declarations. The...

Olga Kurylenko and Kelsey Grammer star in hot air balloon thriller Turbulence
Image
When I saw on Deadline that filming has wrapped on an action thriller called Turbulence, my first thought was, “Is it a remake?” This despite the fact that there have been multiple films with the title Turbulence over the years. I thought it might have something to do with the 1997 film with the title, which starred Lauren Holly as a flight attendant stuck on a plane with a serial killer played by Ray Liotta. As it turns out, the new Turbulence doesn’t have anything to do with that franchise… but it is a hot air balloon thriller that stars Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace) and Kelsey Grammer (Frasier), so it might make for an interesting viewing experience.

Coming our way from the team behind the recent action film No Way Up, including director Claudio Faeh (Northmen: A Viking Saga) and writer Andy Mayson, who is also producing the film,...

Karan Soni and Jonathan Groff Rom-Com ‘A Nice Indian Boy’ Gets Theatrical Release by Blue Harbor (Exclusive)
Image
The romantic comedy “A Nice Indian Boy,” starring Karan Soni (“Deadpool”) and Jonathan Groff is getting a nationwide theatrical release.

Levantine Films and Wayfarer Studios, which produced the film, have tapped Blue Harbor Entertainment to handle U.S. distribution, with a theatrical release date set for April 4.

The film follows Naveen (Soni) as he brings his fiancé Jay (Groff) home to meet his traditional Indian family who, as the film’s logline explains, “must contend with accepting Naveen’s white-orphan-artist boyfriend and helping them plan the Indian wedding of their dreams.” The cast also includes Sunita Mani, Zarna Garg (“Zarna”) and Harish Patel.

“A Nice Indian Boy” is directed by Roshan Sethi from a script penned by Eric Randall, based on the play by Madhuri Shekar (“3 Body Problem” and “The Nevers”).

‘A Nice Indian Boy’ Review: Bollywood Dreams Come True In an Appealing Indian American Romcom
Image
The prize catch of the title isn’t exactly who you might expect in “A Nice Indian Boy,” a romantic comedy that brings a welcome queer angle to that substantial subgenre of love stories tangled up in Indian social mores and cross-generational family politics. In many such films, Naveen (Karan Soni) would be the most desirable of matches for a female protagonist: good-looking, well-spoken and a working doctor. That he’s gay puts him in the less traditionally masculine role of the one seeking a suitor; that his “nice Indian boy” is in fact Jay (Jonathan Groff), a white man raised in Naveen’s culture, is the more complicating factor in director Roshan Sethi’s bright, big-hearted if overly tidy third feature.

Still, Sethi and screenwriters Eric Randall — adapting a stage play by Madhuri Shekar — aren’t out to subvert every trope and tradition in the book. From its meet-cute...

Also among the moves, ABC Signature business affairs head Josh Sussman has been promoted to lead a combined unit for Disney Entertainment Television. Jordan Helman, head of scripted content for Hulu, has been upped to executive vp drama, Hulu Originals and ABC Entertainment, reporting to Sethi.

ABC Signature Folding Into 20th TV Under Karey Burke; Hulu & ABC Scripted Teams Combining Under Simran Sethi In Major Reorg Resulting In Layoffs
Image
In a consolidation move six years in the making, ABC Signature is no more. The production unit is being shut down, with its operations folded into 20th Television under 20th TV President Karey Burke.

Additionally, the ABC and Hulu Originals scripted drama and comedy teams are being combined under ABC/Freeform EVP Simran Sethi who has been elevated to President, Scripted Programming, Hulu Originals and ABC Entertainment.

Leaving their positions as part of the restructuring are Tracy Underwood, who is stepping down as President of ABC Signature and segueing to an overall producing deal with Disney Television Studios, and SVP Erin Wehrenberg, ABC’s Head Of Comedy.

The combining of the studios as well as ABC and Hulu’s scripted teams is impacting about 30 Disney Entertainment Television employees, I hear. The majority of them are on the studio side, split relatively evenly between ABC Signature and 20th TV as a...

The 'Shark Tank' Sharks Don't Regret Rejecting These Unsuccessful Pitches
Image
The Shark Tank Sharks rejected a number of pitches on their show, and their intuitions were right about a lot of them. Many products faced unfavorable outcomes after appearing on Shark Tank. Only a select few products, like Ledge Pillow, managed to find short-lived success after the show.

The Shark Tank panels ability to see through the weaknesses and strengths of business proposals maintained the shows authenticity over the years. Fans of the ABC-produced show watched entrepreneurs walk in and out of the studio, taking their best shots at striking deals worth thousands of dollars to invest in their company or product.

However, while some business owners managed to get the sharks on their side, others couldnt make it past a few sentences. Sharks like Kevin OLeary, Mark Cuban, and Barbara Corcoran cant help but notice the flaws in proposals from the onset. This article will look back at products...

Kevin O'Leary Absolutely Lost It On A Shark Tank Contestant After Having His Reputation Insulted
Image
Kevin O'Leary offered Maneesh Sethi a $500,000 loan at 5.7% interest for a 3.14% equity stake in his company Pavlok. Sethi rejected the offer, stating he wouldn't work with O'Leary due to his rude behavior and focus on profits over customer happiness. O'Leary became furious, calling Sethi an "a**hole" and ending the pitch, making it one of the worst Shark Tank pitches ever.

Thanks to Kevin O'Leary's time starring in Shark Tank and his years of business success, he has become rich and famous. Of course, the other sharks are rich too because making deals like the the one Lori Greiner made with Scrub Daddy can net them a fortune. Still, O'Leary can rest assured that he has become so rich that people wonder what will happen to his fortune when he dies.

Thanks to everything O'Leary has achieved, he expects respect from the people who want to get rich on Shark Tank,...

Deadpool 3 was originally a Christmas movie before Disney bought Fox
Image
It’s safe to say that Deadpool & Wolverine is one of the most anticipated films of the year. Even a dual strike from the writers’ and actors’ unions couldn’t slow this new exciting entry down. The comic book frenemy rivalry between Deadpool and Wolverine of the X-Men was only hinted at with actors Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman taking friendly jabs at each other. Now that Disney has acquired Fox and the entire X-Men film franchise, the Merc with a Mouth’s inauguration into the MCU is going to be a crazy universe-bending ride. However, before Disney made its purchase and the Deadpool franchise was planning its third film outside of Marvel Studios, series co-star Karan Soni revealed the original story was a Christmas adventure.

Soni, who portrays Wade Wilson’s taxi-driving friend, Dopinder, recently spoke with ScreenRant while promoting A Nice Indian Boy at SXSW when he...

Deadpool Actor Reveals Planned Story for ‘Deadpool 3’ Before the Movie Joined the MCU
Image
‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is easily the most anticipated MCU title. The upcoming film is gaining significant attention within the MCU community. Regarded as a potential game-changer by insiders, the studio is banking on its success to reignite enthusiasm among fans, who have shown declining interest in the genre.

Several factors contribute to the immense anticipation surrounding the movie. Firstly, it marks Deadpool’s debut in the MCU. Additionally, it sees Hugh Jackman reprising his role as a variant of Wolverine, despite his character’s demise in Fox’s X-Men Universe. Moreover, numerous cameos from previous movie franchises, along with rumored appearances by new stars like Taylor Swift, add to the excitement.

Actor Karan Soni, set to reprise his role as Dopinder in the third installment, recently shed light on the original concept for the film. While acknowledging its seemingly ludicrous nature. Reportedly, the initial plan for the third Deadpool movie...

Deadpool Actor Reveals What ‘Deadpool 3’ Was Supposed To Be About Before MCU Merger

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is the hottest upcoming title as far as the MCU goes. The movie is already being praised as a game-changer and the studio is counting on it to restore some faith and excitement as fans are less and less interested in the genre.

Now there are quite a few obvious things why the movie generates some much hype. First, it’s going to be Deadpool’s first foray into the MCU. It’s also the first movie in which Hugh Jackman will reprise his role as Wolverine variant after dying in Fox’s X-Men Universe. But there are also a lot of cameos promised from the aforementioned movie franchise, and some new cameos that are only being whispered about like Taylor Swift for example.

Now Karan Soni, who will be returning as Dopinder in the third movie has touched upon the original plans for the movie, and...

Politics over sport: Nazam Sethi slams Asian Cricket Council for hosting Asia Cup in Sri Lanka
Image
New Delhi, Sep 3 (Ians) The Asian Cricket Council (Acc) faced heavy criticism for scheduling the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka as a former chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (Pcb) Management Committee Najam Sethi voiced his regret after the eagerly anticipated match between Pakistan and India in the 2023 Asia Cup was called off at the Pallekele International Stadium in Kandy, due to rain.

Only one innings was possible in the third match tournament on Saturday after India were bowled out for 266 in 48.5 overs and rain prevented the Pakistan team from starting their chase.

Taking to social media platform X (previously Twitter), Sethi wrote: “How disappointing! Rain mars the greatest contest in cricket. But this was forecast. As Pcb Chair, I urged the Acc to play in UAE but poor excuses were made to accommodate Sri Lanka. Too hot in Dubai, they said.”

“But it was as hot as when the...

Pakistan's participation at 2023 World Cup in India subject to government approval: Report
Image
New Delhi, June 17 (Ians) Pakistan cricket team’s participation in the 50-over World Cup in India later this year is subject to approval from their government,

According to an ESPNcricinfo report, Pakistan Cricket Board (Pcb) under its chairman Najam Sethi has written to the Icc, following the release of a draft schedule to all participating countries last week, to highlight they cannot unilaterally approve the fixture list.

“We have written to the Icc that we can’t give approval or disapproval to this (World Cup schedule). It’s our government who has to decide, just like when it comes to India, it’s their government that decides when they go to play,” Sethi said

“There is no point asking us if we will play in Ahmedabad. When the time comes, first it will be decided whether we are going or not, then the government decides where we will go,” he added.

We understand Bcci's position; hybrid model was the best solution: Najam Sethi on Asia Cup
Image
Lahore, June 15 (Ians) Najam Sethi, Chair of the Management Committee of the Pakistan Cricket Board (Pcb), on Thursday said that he understands the position of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (Bcci), while adding that the hybrid model was the most viable solution to host the Asia Cup 2023.

Sethi’s comments came hours after the Asian Cricket Council (Acc) said the 2023 Asia Cup will be hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka in a hybrid model from August 31 to September 17.

It will be the first time since 2008 that matches of a multi-nation cricket tournament will be staged in Pakistan, who will be hosting the first four matches of Asia Cup 2023, followed by Sri Lanka hosting the rest of the tournament.

“I am elated that our hybrid version for the Acc Asia Cup 2023 has been accepted. This means the Pcb will remain as the event host and stage matches in...

Pcb denies talk of neutral venue for Odi World Cup 2023, confirms hosting India's matches in Asia Cup at neutral venue under discussion
Image
Lahore, March 31 (Ians) Pakistan Cricket Board (Pcb) said through its chairman Najam Sethi on Friday that there hasn’t been any talk of a neutral venue for the Pakistan team regarding playing its matches in the 2023 Odi World Cup in October in India.

The Pcb, however, confirmed that the position taken by Sethi and the management committee over holding India’s matches at a neutral venue for Asia Cup 2023 instead of the host country, Pakistan, are still under discussions.

Through an official statement, which referred to the media talk in Rawalpindi/Islamabad, Sethi said he had briefed the media on the hybrid model he had presented to the Acc officials for the Acc Asia Cup to end the impasse that had been created following the Bcci’s decision to not send its team to Pakistan.

“This proposal – to play India’s matches at a neutral venue and the rest in...

Why Does Disney Want FX Guru John Landgraf to Manage Onyx Collective and Nat Geo? He’s John Landgraf.
Image
When John Landgraf speaks, TV reporters don’t just listen — they frantically transcribe.

Let’s be clear: Landgraf is regarded as the genius television executive in Hollywood. When he speaks at the twice-annual TCAs (Television Critics Association), the ballroom is packed with faces that other executives will never see looking back up at them. His professorial preparation, droll delivery, and swift speech pattern bring many, many words — and no fluff.

Instead Landgraf delivers news, a regular “Peak TV” (the term he coined) update, and thoughtful opinions on granular topics and the industry at large. He doesn’t dodge, he keeps spin to a minimum. A Landgraf executive session is must-see for TV critics, many of whom date back to the days Landgraf made “Friends” the staple of Must-See TV. Regardless of age, every critic in that hotel ballroom has disproportionately rewarded FX series with placement on their Top 10 lists, another...

Her decision to step down as skipper comes right after the conclusion of the Icc Women’s T20 World Cup 2023, in South Africa, where Pakistan Women had a disappointing outing, losing three of their four group stage matches.

Disney’s Dana Walden Reorganizes Senior Team: John Landgraf, Simran Sethi Elevated
Image
Dana Walden has solidified her senior executive team.

Following the early February news that she was being upped to co-chairman of Disney Entertainment, Walden has streamlined her reporting structure with both John Landgraf and Simran Sethi adding responsibilities.

Landgraf, who has long been a creative standout at FX, has added prestige brands Nat Geo and Onyx Collective to his oversight. As Walden noted in her internal memo, Onyx remains a major Disney priority, as evidenced by its well-funded roster of diverse talent, and will continue to be run by Tara Duncan. In fact, as part of the new structure, Duncan will be solely focused on Onyx, with her Freeform programming responsibilities shifting to Sethi, who will maintain her role at ABC Entertainment as well.

In the new structure, which comes after returning CEO Bob Iger’s swift dismantling of Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution, National Geographic head Courteney Monroe and Duncan will report to Landgraf,...

Disney TV Reshuffle: Dana Walden Makes First Big Moves as John Landgraf, Simran Sethi Expand Duties
Image
FX chief John Landgraf and ABC programming head Simran Sethi will expand their duties under an executive shuffle at Disney’s TV operations, one of the first big moves under Dana Walden, who was assigned responsibility for the company’s TV networks after Bob Iger returned as Disney’s CEO.

Landgraf will take oversight of National Geographic as well as Onyx Collective, the production unit devoted to projects from communities of color and underrepresented groups. Sethi, meanwhile, will oversee programming and development for both ABC and Freeform. She will continue to report to Craig Erwich, president, Disney Television Group.

The moves comes as Tara Duncan, who had been supervising programming for both Onyx Collective and Freeform, will devote her attention solely to Onyx, freeing up the programming duties for Sethi, who had a previous tenure at the cable network.

Both Duncan and Courteney Monroe, who oversees Nat Geo, will report to Landgraf.

Teach CPR technique to school kids: Kgmu doctor
Image
Lucknow, Dec 7 (Ians) Medical experts feel that school children should be taught the technique of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, (CPR) in schools.

Prof Rishi Sethi, senior faculty cardiology at King George’s Medical University (Kgmu) said that this would create awareness among the school children and also help in saving lives in case one suffers from an attack.

“People should learn basic CPR which should be taught to students at school level itself and should be revisited annually. This way we will have many people who could help save precious lives,” he said.

The doctor said, “Sudden fall indicates it could be due to a cardiac problem and in this situation, CPR can save a life. It is simple. Just push the chest wall continuously after a gap of a few seconds. The previous method of mouth-to-mouth respiration is not required.”

“Have a heart to help others, learn to help first instead of making videos,...

Grey's Anatomy: 10 Character Pairings That Would've Made A Hilarious Team (According To Reddit)
Image
Simran Sethi, ABC Entertainment's EVP, Programming and Content Strategy, spoke to Deadline about season 19 of Grey's Anatomy and the fresh characters. Sethi explained "this new class of interns" are "reminiscent of nostalgic early Grey’s, but they’re absolutely their own characters.”

The hospital drama is at its best when characters are joking around because while they have stressful jobs, they make time to have some fun, too. Fans love watching certain duos, like Meredith Grey and Cristina Yang, as they make for a truly funny pair. Redditors are sharing the characters who they wish would pair up as this would make for some hilarious storylines.

As ‘The Rookie: Feds’ Debuts & ‘The Good Doctor’ Eyes Legal Spinoff, ABC’s Simran Sethi Talks Franchise Strategy
Image
Drama procedural franchises have proven resilient amid declining linear ratings, with CBS’ FBI series and NBC’s Chicago and Law & Order dramas topping Live+Same Day ratings during premiere week.

ABC has had a lot of success with flagship drama Grey’s Anatomy and its spinoff Station 19, which have built an integrated universe with characters, most notably Jason George, permanently moving from the mothership to the offshoot. Last season, the network took a more traditional “franchise” approach with one of its top procedurals, cop drama The Rookie, introducing a potential spinoff set in a different world, the FBI, as a backdoor pilot. The project, The Rookie: Feds, starring Niecy Nash, went to series and just made its debut.

Now ABC is looking to the same with another hit procedural, medical drama The Good Doctor, which is getting a planted spinoff, The Good Lawyer, airing as an episode later this season.

ABC Development Head on ‘Alaska Daily,’ Streaming Growth: “We’re Excited”
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Two weeks of the 2022-23 TV season, traditional Nielsen ratings for entertainment programming have continued on their years-long downward trend. Aside from a couple of NFL games, no primetime show in premiere week hit 10 million viewers, even with a week of delayed viewing.

There is, however, evidence that viewers are still finding network series, as a handful of streaming numbers indicate. ABC’s Abbott Elementary climbed from 2.92 million viewers for its on-air premiere to 7 million after a week across all platforms — with 2.7 million of those viewers coming via streaming and digital platforms. The network’s drama The Rookie went from 3.36 million same-day viewers to 8.2 million after a week of multi-platform viewing. The adults 18-49 ratings for both shows also more than tripled.

Numbers like that give Simran Sethi, executive vp programming and content strategy at ABC Entertainment, optimism about the state of the business.

ABC’s Simran Sethi Previews ‘Alaska Daily’ Premiere: ‘It’s Very Entertaining but Very Impactful’
Image
With the launch of “Alaska Daily” — the new drama series starring Academy Award winner Hillary Swank and hailing from Academy Award winner Tom McCarthy — ABC is shining a spotlight on an important issue: violence against Native women in the U.S.

Swank plays an investigative journalist who takes a job at a daily metro paper in Alaska, where she becomes embroiled in a mystery involving murder and a string of unsolved disappearances.

Simran Sethi, ABC Enteratinment’s executive vice president of programming and content strategy, said that the show was inspired by a series of articles published by the Anchorage Daily News, and that the lack of media attention around the crises facing Native women helped push ABC into picking up the show.

“I think the idea that this crisis isn’t talked about much in that we don’t talk about it on TV very often certainly was a...
