‘The Haunted House of Horror’ Blu-ray Review

Stars: Frankie Avalon, Richard O’Sullivan, George Sewell, Jill Haworth, Dennis Price, Mark Wynter, Gina Warwick, Carol Dilworth, Robin Stewart | Written by Michael Armstrong, Gerry Levey | Directed by Michael Armstrong

Tigon’s The Haunted House of Horror (aka Horror House) is a peculiar blend of 1960s camp, teenage angst, and Gothic horror that struggles to find its footing but still manages to intrigue. Directed by Michael Armstrong and starring Frankie Avalon, Richard O’Sullivan, and George Sewell, the film ambitiously sets out to combine youthful rebellion with the chills of a classic haunted house tale.

The story begins with a group of swinging London friends who, in search of thrills, decide to spend a night in an abandoned mansion rumoured to be haunted. What starts as playful banter quickly turns deadly when one of their number is brutally murdered. The group’s paranoia grows as they attempt to solve the mystery,...

The Vengeance of She
Olinka Berova is as sexy as Ursula Andress, but even with a new woman producer Hammer’s She sequel doesn’t give her new She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed much of a chance — the story just sits there and the kingdom of Kuma is woefully under-produced. Good photography and acting help, but one doesn’t earn high marks for the Boys from Bray.

Barry Lyndon
Stanley Kubrick’s contribution to great cinema of the 1970s offers his vision of what an epic should be. Transported by images that recall great paintings of the period, and Kubrick’s new approaches to low-light cinematography, we witness a rogue’s progress through troubled times. And even Ryan O’Neal is good!

Review: Gerry And Sylvia Anderson's "U.F.O.: The Complete Series"; UK Blu-ray Release From Network
By Tim Greaves

With Christmas 1970 on the horizon, the UK’s thrilling new sci-fi TV show UFO was well underway. Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's first live-action series, it was set in the future and revolved around the activities of the Supreme Headquarters Alien Defence Organisation (Shado), a covert agency presided over by Commander Ed Straker (Ed Bishop) to fend off alien attacks on mankind. As a wide-eyed 8-year-old I was hooked and I can recall wishing two things. One was that I could have one of the Dinky Toys’ missile-firing Shado Interceptors, which I thought then (and still think now) was the coolest among the incredible array of vehicles that appeared in the show; I’d not be nearly as forgiving today as I was back then that Dinky had manufactured it in garish green, where the ‘real’ ones on TV were white. The other wish was that I...

Ten Tigon Tales of Terror
Although Hammer Films will always be associated with British horror, the studio did have stiff competition. Amicus specialised in the successful horror anthologies and Us counterparts American International Pictures established a permanent UK base in the mid sixties. Other smaller independents took their own bite from the cherry tree of horror with some success, the best known being Tigon Films.

Tigon has received some belated recognition in recent years. Andy Boot’s book on British horror Fragments of Fear devotes a chapter to the company while John Hamilton’s excellent book Beast in the Cellar covers the varied career of Tigon’s charismatic founder Tony Tenser.

Like Hammer’s Sir James Carreras, Tenser was one of the British Film Industry’s great entrepreneurs. Born in London to poor Lithuanian immigrants and a movie fan since childhood, he was an ambitious man with a natural talent for showmanship. Combining shrewd business...

The Crimson Petal and The White Hits DVD Stands Stateside
The Crimson Petal and the White. Acorn Media

Kieran Kinsella

The Crimson Petal and the White is a controversial Dickensian style novel about the struggles of a working girl named Sugar. Last year, the BBC took the brave decision to bring the story to TV. Lucinda Coxon’s adaptation of Michael Faber’s tale proved to be one of the biggest hits of the year helped in part by an all-star cast and a hard hitting storyline. The Crimson Petal and the White recently aired on the Encore channel in the U.S. and it’s now available on Acorn media DVD.

X-Files actress Gillian Anderson puts in a powerful performance as the malevolent brothel owner who helps to guide Sugar down the path to misery and despair. The heroine of the piece is played by Romola Garai who is probably best known to American viewers for her role in...

Tomas Alfredson to Adapt Le Carre’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
While Hollywood tries to remake his vampire horror movie “Let the Right One In” with those guys from “Cloverfield”, Swedish director Tomas Alfredson has already moved on to his next project: adapting the John Le Carre spy novel “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” for Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner. The original novel was set in the aftermath of the cold war, and tells the tale of a spy-hunt within the highest echelons of the British Secret Intelligence Service. THR says Peter Morgan (”Frost/Nixon,” “The Queen”) will do the actual adapting, while Alfredson will get ready to direct the film sometime next year. The book was previously adapted into a British TV series in the 1970s starring Alec Guinness as George Smiley, the retired former British intelligence officer called in to track down a double agent within the spy agency. The series co-starred Michael Jayston, Anthony Bate, George Sewell,...
