Oftentimes I’ll find myself looking for a new film to watch on sites like Cheap Charts or Just Watch; hell sometimes I just trawl through iTunes – flicking between looking at the newest arrivals section or going down a rabbit hole of “recommendations”. Sometimes, just sometimes, you come across a fantastic hidden gem or a film that has been unceremoniously dumped to digital without a word. On Halloween is one such film and it grabbed me on the creepy “killer clown” premise alone…

On Halloween follows journalist Jordan (Giselle van der Wiel) who goes in search of the truth after a series of brutal deaths and disappearances lead back to...

Timothy Boyle’s ‘On Halloween’ sells to the Us and UK
‘On Halloween.’

Vertical Entertainment has acquired North American and UK rights to On Halloween, Timothy Boyle’s micro-budgeted horror movie about a killer clown.

Operating virtually as a one-man band, Boyle wrote, produced, directed and photographed the Us-set film inspired by the creepy clown sightings of 2016, which prompted some impressionable people to go clown hunting.

His associate producer Jeremy Cook was on hand at times to help move the lights and organise the cast.

Giselle van der Wiel stars as a journalist who uncovers a shocking urban legend about a serial killing clown who has stalked the woods of Century Park for over 100 years.

Patch May plays her husband with Aaron J March as her cameraman and Ivan Topic, Robert Harrell and James Pratt as cops who hunting down the clown. Terry Serio and Telen Rodwell play clowns.

Timothy Boyle unleashes a creepy clown in ‘On Halloween’
Terry Serio in ‘On Halloween’

Filmmaker Timothy Boyle decided to shoot a micro-budgeted horror movie about a killer clown in between two other projects.

Operating virtually as a one-man band, Boyle wrote, produced, directed and photographed On Halloween. His associate producer Jeremy Cook was on hand at times to help move the lights and organise the cast.

“It was just me, my camera and my actors on set,” the filmmaker tells If. “It was actually liberating, the best experience of my career and the closest thing I’ve ever had to truly experiencing being an auteur.”

Inspired by the creepy clown sightings of 2016, which prompted some people to go clown hunting, he assembled a cast including Giselle van der Wiel, Brandon Paterson, Conor Fogarty, Terry Serio, Ivan Topic, Aaron J March, Patch May and Ezekiel Simat.

Giselle plays Jordan Madden, a journalist in search of the truth behind a series...

A deaf trans man and a musician find love in ‘Unsound’
Yiana Pandelis and Reece Noi (Photo credit: Ben Mezups)

Yiana Pandelis was 14 when she did her first acting workshop at Melbourne’s Active Performance Studios.

Her performance made a lasting impression on one of the attendees, casting director Cinzia Coassin, who was amazed to discover afterwards that Yiana is hearing impaired.

So years later when Coassin received the script for Unsound, she immediately thought of Yiana as ideal for the co-lead Finn, a young woman who is hearing impaired and undergoing the difficult process of transitioning to male.

After reading the script by Ally Burnham, a Nida graduate who received funding from Screen Australia’s Gender Matters Brilliant Stories program, Pandelis did several self-tests and auditioned for a previous director in Melbourne last year.

Development took longer than the producer Tsu Shan Chambers expected, with Screen Australia’s support on the script, and Ian Watson took over as the director.

Game of Thrones’ Reece Noi and newcomer Yiana Pandelis are playing the leads in Unsound, a quirky romantic drama now shooting in Sydney.

Directed by Ian Watson, and scripted by Ally Burnham, the plot follows Noi as Noah, a disillusioned musician who quits the band and returns to his mother’s home.

After clashing with his mother Angela (Paula Duncan) over old wounds, Noah seeks solace elsewhere and is caught up in the vibrant, passionate life of Finn (Pandelis), a young trans man.

Finn, who only speaks Auslan, runs a centre and nightclub for his deaf community. Despite their differences, the two become closer but with no shared language to fall back on, they risk hurting each other.

The cast includes Todd McKenney as Lewis, Finn’s father, Christine Anu as Moniqua, a fiery singer...
