Mark Dacascos and Samuel Le Bihan in Le Pacte des loups (2001)
Theatrical releases announced for Silent Night, Deadly Night remake and Return to Silent Hill
Mark Dacascos and Samuel Le Bihan in Le Pacte des loups (2001)
Last month, we learned that Brotherhood of the Wolf and Silent Hill director Christophe Gans’ new Silent Hill movie Return to Silent Hill, which is said to be “totally independent from the two previous movies,” had secured a U.S. distribution deal with entertainment studio Cineverse. About three months ago, that company, which is also behind the Terrifier franchise, went into production on a remake of the classic Christmas slasher movie Silent Night, Deadly Night, with writer/director Mike P. Nelson (the Wrong Turn reboot) at the helm. Now, Cineverse and Bloody Disgusting, its horror division, have announced that they’re teaming with Iconic Events Releasing to bring the Silent Night, Deadly Night remake to theatres on December 12th, with Return to Silent Hill following on January 23rd.

Directed by Charles E. Sellier Jr. from a screenplay by Michael Hickey (with Paul Caimi receiving story credit), the original Silent Night,...

Silent Night, Deadly Night remake begins filming, unveils first image
Image
Four years have gone by since we heard that Orwo Studios and Black Hanger Studios, the folks behind Jeepers Creepers: Reborn, were going to be making a reboot of the classic Christmas slasher movie Silent Night, Deadly Night (watch it Here), and while those plans didn’t work out and Orwo Studios and Black Hanger Studios are no longer involved, a remake is still moving forward. Last November, we learned that the film will be coming our way from Cineverse, the company behind the Terrifier franchise, with writer/director Mike P. Nelson at the helm. A couple of months ago, Sixth Dimension, the new in-house genre label at Studiocanal, picked up the global rights (excluding North America) to the project. And now, Deadline has confirmed that the remake has officially started filming – and they even unveiled the first image, which can be seen at the bottom of this article.

A Controversial 41-Year-Old Slasher Movie Is Getting a Remake (& A First Look Has Just Been Released)
Image
Terrifier franchise distributor Cineverse has unveiled its next slasher production. A first look at the company's upcoming remake of the controversial slasher cult classic Silent Night, Deadly Night has been shared as filming kicks off in Canada.

Cineverse has moved quickly since announcing plans to remake Silent Night, Deadly Night back in November. Earlier this week, Rohan Campbell was cast in the role of protagonist Billy Chapman, who in the original movie goes on a killing spree dressed in a Santa suit. Horror fans will recognize Campbell from 2022's Halloween Ends, where he played a major supporting role in the legacy sequel as Corey Cunningham, and more recently, Oz Perkins' The Monkey. The first look at the Silent Night, Deadly Night remake was shared by Deadline and features a shirtless Campbell staring at himself in the mirror.

Some fun, holiday-centric news from Deadline today, Cineverse will be taking another stab at the Christmas slasher film Silent Night, Deadly Night! Cineverse is best known for distributing Terrifier 3, another Christmas horror movie released this past October and made bank at the box office.

Now, the entertainment company has acquired the global rights to a reimagining of the 1984 cult film from director Charles E. 5 Best Christmas Horror Movies(Photo Credit –IMDb)

When one thinks of Christmas, horror, and gore are generally not the first things that come to mind. Christmas is all about having fun. It’s full of life and color, and identifying it as scary would be out of place. And while Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas” does make a perfect example of a ‘scary Christmas,’ it does not qualify as a traditional, spine-chilling horror movie. But contrary to popular narrative — certain media out there does it, and does it well. Think of the latest “Fargo” episode that runs a Halloween theme and blends it with “Nightmare Before Christmas.”

So, the appeal behind it is understandable. This is why we have curated a list of the best Christmas horror movies you can enjoy for a change of pace from all the happy and sparkly traditions.

‘Silent Night, Deadly Night’ Novelization Review – A Sick, Superb Twist on a Holiday Classic
Image
1984 was a good year for slashers. Not only did Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) claw his way onto the big screen for the first time, Jason Voorhees (Ted White) also burst through windows and slashed through teens in the franchise high Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter. While Wes Craven was releasing his genre-defining classic A Nightmare on Elm Street, another iconic killer was crawling out of a snow-lined chimney. Charles E. Sellier Jr.’s Silent Night, Deadly Night treated audiences to Billy Chapman (Robert Brian Wilson), an ax-wielding mad-man dressed as a sinister Santa Claus. This exploitative film quickly sparked controversy from horrified parents worried that their children might glimpse the jolly gift-giver dishing out bloody punishment instead of holiday cheer. An avalanche of pearl-clutching soon followed, including angry letters and protests eventually resulting in Tri-star pulling the film after only a few weeks. Despite this chilly reaction, the film...

Christmas Evil Is The Deranged Christmas Horror Movie For All The Holiday Sickos Out There
Image
Listening to the lyrics of "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town," it's easy to read a menacing tone from its warnings. Saint Nick sees you when you're sleeping. He even knows your sins. So you better watch out ... or else.

The idea of a less jolly Santa is a wellspring of humor and broken spines in Tommy Wirkola's "Violent Night," which sees David Harbour's Santa Claus doling out "season's beatings" in defense of a child on his coveted "good" list. As "Violent Night" steers its sleigh into theaters this week, moviegoers are treated to the sight of a hammer-swinging, street-fighting Father Christmas, bedecked in Celtic tattoos and crushing the heads and hearts of numerous henchmen commanded by John Leguizamo's holiday-hating mercenary Jimmy "Scrooge" Martinez. Pat Casey and Josh Miller's script ensures that nearly every holiday element finds its gruesome employment at the hands of Santa or Scrooge: tinsel becomes a garrote,...

Sacré Père Noël (1991)
'Silent Night, Deadly Night': 20 thoughts on the best-worst holiday movie of all time
Sacré Père Noël (1991)
A confession: I’m not wild about Christmas. As somebody who gets unnecessarily neurotic about whether or not everybody else is having a good time, the onset of shopping crowds, traveling woes, gift-buying difficulties, and food-related malaise often overwhelms my delicate constitution. (Also, the constant claptrap about the War on Christmas doesn’t make the season any more fun.)

But there are a handful of Christmas traditions I have adopted over the years that have made the last six weeks of the year something close to bearable. The cornerstone of those rituals is the annual viewing of Silent Night, Deadly Night,...

FEARnet's Silent Night, Deadly Night Retrospective: Part Two
Lee Harry
If you missed Part 1 of FEARnet’s Silent Night, Deadly Night retrospective, be sure to check it out before you proceed!

At the end of Silent Night, Deadly Night, young Ricky inherits a Caldwell family heirloom; the blood-soaked axe that his big brother picked up from Ira’s Toys, and used to cut off the heads of humans and snowmen alike. Given the cliffhanger of a finale, not to mention the fact that the controversy surrounding Silent Night, Deadly Night provided the film with press on all the major news networks, it was only natural that a sequel wasn’t going to be far behind. This is the horror genre, after all.

Silent Night, Deadly Night’s director Charles Sellier was approached by Live Entertainment to helm Part 2 of the holiday horror story, a job that he couldn’t in good conscience sign up for. Sellier never expected that the...

DVD Review: 'Silent Night'
★☆☆☆☆It's good to be reminded every once in a while that critics aren't always correct. On the other hand, however, you have efforts as abysmal as Silent Night (2012), a remake of director Charles E. Sellier Jr.'s cult schlocker Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984) so loose that it's practically falling apart. This new interpretation by Steven C. Miller, starring Malcolm McDowell and Jamie King, is so gratuitous you could be forgiven for asking who (even amongst hardcore gore fans) would find it entertaining. It's Christmas Eve and someone dressed as Saint Nick is murdering the nice (or rather naughty) townsfolk of Cryer, Wisconsin.

Silent Night, Deadly Night is Coming Back to Theaters This December!
Now that Halloween is over, it’s time to start watching those Christmas-themed horror movies. One of the more popular ones is Silent Night, Deadly night and it’s coming to theaters across the country this December. The screenings are courtesy of Brainstorm Media and Fangoria, who made the announcement:

“Fangoria is thrilled to announce the re-release of the controversial, ultra-bloody anti-Holiday slasher favorite Silent Night, Deadly Night, opening wide across the country in theaters everywhere!

Released in 1984 to outrage and parental paranoia, director Charles Sellier’s killer Kris Kringle creeper tells the tale of a tot who, on Christmas Eve 1974, sees mommy kissing Santa’s axe as a lunatic invades their home and murders his family. Growing up in an abusive Catholic orphanage, the poor put-upon lad grows up to be a similar psycho in a Santa suit and goes on a bloody rampage. The film will be fully uncut and re-mastered,...

Digital Fury: DVD Essentials for December
A Planet Fury-approved selection of notable genre releases for December.

Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012) 20th Century Fox Blu-ray and DVD Available Now

Six-year-old Hushpuppy (fearless newcomer Quvenzhané Wallis) lives in the “Bathtub,” a southern Louisiana bayou community far removed from the civilized world. Her father Wink (Dwight Henry), a poor fisherman, keeps her at arm’s length but ensures her well-being within the cultural confines of their rough-and-tumble society. Seen through the eyes of the feisty Hushpuppy, the lines between myth and reality are blurred. An impending storm coincides with the melting of the arctic ice caps (and the thawing of some mythical creatures), which changes the world of the Bathtub forever. This heartbreaking little fable came out of nowhere last summer after building some positive buzz on the festival circuit. Shot on 16mm film for under $2 million, Beasts is a true independent film: a fiercely original and moving...

Five on Film: Discussing Christmas Movies w/ ‘Silent Night’ Director Steven C. Miller
Five On Film is an occasional feature on “Hey You Geeks!!” where directors, writers, actors or just plain awesome advocates of geek culture are asked five questions in line with the theme of their current body of work. In this edition, I chat with Silent Night director Steven C. Miller on the topic of Christmas movies.

Miller’s Silent Night is loosely based on the 1984 Charles Sellier Jr. cult classic Silent Night, Deadly Night. Silent Night, which stars Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange), Jamie King (Sin City) and Ellen Wong (Scott Pilgrim v. the World) is a holiday horror film set on Christmas Eve in a small town under siege by a murderous Santa Claus. In the spirit of the holidays (and the films release into theaters this Friday), I asked Miller to share some of his favorite Christmas movie memories, as well as any new Christmas memories (or horrors...

Greatest Slasher Films (1970 – 1990)
The definition of a slasher film varies depending on who you ask, but in general, it contains several specific traits that feed into the genre’s formula. Author Vera Dika rather strictly defines the sub-genre in her book Games of Terror by only including films made between 1978 and 1984. In other words, she saw it as a movement. When someone describes Brick, they don’t define it as a noir, but instead neo-noir . In other words, it’s a modern motion picture that prominently utilizes elements of film noir, but with updated themes, content, style, visual elements or media that were absent in those from the 1940s and 1950s. So does one consider Scream a slasher film or a neo-slasher, or simply put, a modern slasher?

Some consider Thirteen Women to be the earliest slasher – released all the way back in 1932. Personally I think that is rubbish. Thirteen Women is more like Desperate Housewives on sedatives.

Director and Producer Talk the Screamfest Premiere of Under The Bed; Update on Silent Night
With the Screamfest Horror Film Festival hosting the U.S. premiere of Steven C. Miller's latest feature, Under the Bed, on Tuesday, October 16th, at 7:30 Pm, we have a new still for you as well as word from Miller and producer Will Clevinger.

"This film will take you back to your childhood and then rip it apart limb by limb," director Miller, who previously helmed Automaton Transfusion, The Aggression Scale and the upcoming Silent Night, stated of Under The Bed.

“It’s a movie that has its roots in films like Gremlins, The Goonies, Poltergeist, Little Monsters, and Et,” he continued, “where kids are dealing with the unknown, just like those great 80's genre mash-ups that had you wondering if they were rated PG or R. Only this one was done on a micro-budget and with 100% practical [effects]. I’m excited to unleash our creature.” (You can see a...

San Diego Comic-Con 2012: Santa Ready to Slay in New Silent Night Art
We didn't forget to look up at this year's Comic-Con, and as a result we ended up snagging some new artwork for Steven C. Miller's Silent Night! Let me tell ya, kids, you really may want to consider being "nice" instead of naughty!

The "loose remake" of Charles E. Sellier, Jr.'s 1984 classic Silent Night, Deadly Night stars Jaime King (My Bloody Valentine, Mother’s Day), Malcolm McDowell (Halloween), Donal Logue (Shark Night 3D), Jamie Kennedy (Scream), Brendan Fehr (Final Destination), Lisa Marie (Sleepy Hollow), Cortney Palm (Sushi Girl), Rick Skene (The Divide), and Ellen Wong (Scott Pilgrim vs the World). Look for it this holiday season from Anchor Bay.

Synopsis

It's a snowy Christmas Eve in Cryer, Wisconsin. The normally quiet town is bustling with activity as the residents are getting ready for the big day. The events take place around the town's annual Santa Parade, which has...

Three New Images from Director Steven C. Miller’s Silent Night
When I first heard that the director of “Automaton Transfusion” was embarking on a “loose” remake of Charles E. Sellier Jr.’s 1984 classic “Silent Night, Deadly Night”, I wasn’t too thrilled. However, two things have since changed my mind. First, “The Aggression Scale”, Miller’s intense revenge-oriented endeavor, is seriously badass. Second, a recent viewing of the original “Silent Night” made me realize that this story might be ripe for a re-telling. Don’t get me wrong — the original is still a blast, but I don’t think a remake is going to hurt anything. If you’re unfamiliar with the storyline, read this synopsis: The slashing begins on a snowy Christmas Eve in Cryer, Wi. The normally quiet town is bustling with activity as the the residents are getting ready for the big day. The events take place around the towns annual Santa Parade, which has brought a...

Exclusive: Steven C. Miller and Vincent Guastini Talk Silent Night; New Photos!
With Steven C. Miller’s slasher Santa flick Silent Night having wrapped last month in Winnipeg, we chatted with the director regarding the feature, as we also did with makeup guru Vincent Guastini, both of whom gave us the lowdown on the FX-heavy flick, its slated release date, and more.

“We shot it in seventeen days,” Miller, whose feature The Aggression Scale released earlier this week to video via Anchor Bay, told us of Silent Night, which stars veteran actor Malcolm McDowell, Jaime King (Sin City), Jamie Kennedy (Scream), Brendan Fehr (Final Destination), Lisa Marie (Sleepy Hollow), Donal Logue (Shark Night 3D) and Ellen Wong and serves as a loose remake of Charles E. Sellier, Jr.’s controversial 1984 slasher film Silent Night, Deadly Night. The originator revolved around an unhinged teenager who embarks on an axe murder spree while dressed as Saint Nick.

“We didn’t get to shoot full...

Now this? This is friggin' cool! Maybe even just as cool as the iconic one-sheet for the original Silent Night, Deadly Night. Get ready, kids; the first bit of artwork for Steven C. Miller's Silent Night is here, and it's appropriately naughty!

The "loose remake" of Charles E. Sellier Jr.'s 1984 classic Silent Night, Deadly Night is filming now in Winnipeg with Jaime King (My Bloody Valentine, Mother’s Day), Malcolm McDowell (Halloween), Donal Logue (Shark Night 3D), Jamie Kennedy (Scream), Brendan Fehr (Final Destination), Lisa Marie (Sleepy Hollow), Cortney Palm (Sushi Girl), Rick Skene (The Divide), and Ellen Wong (Scott Pilgrim vs the World).
