2022 Tony Awards nominations snubs: Daniel Craig, ‘Flying Over Sunset,’ Katrina Lenk …
Image
With 34 productions eligible for this year’s Tony Awards, there were plenty of names missing when nominations were announced on Monday morning. Among the most surprising 2022 Tony Awards nominations snubs was Katrina Lenk, who plays Bobbie in Marianne Elliott’s reimagining of the late Stephen Sondheim’s “Company.” The production merited nine nominations, including Best Musical Revival, Best Director, Best Featured Actor (Matt Doyle), and Best Featured Actress. Lenk previously won a Tony Award for her performance in Best Musical-winner “The Band’s Visit.”

Original musical “Flying Over Sunset” also underperformed. Even though the shuttered production scored four nominations, including Best Actress (Carmen Cusack) and Best Score, it missed out on the top category of Best Musical and Best Book for librettist James Lapine.

The star-studded revival of William Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” also missed out on a number of key nominations. Director Sam Gold...

‘Flying Over Sunset’ To End Broadway Run Three Weeks Early
Image
Flying Over Sunset will end its limited engagement Broadway run three weeks earlier than planned, producer Lincoln Center Theater announced today. The musical, which imagines a meeting of the three real-life figures Aldous Huxley, Clare Boothe Luce and Cary Grant, will play its final performance at the Vivian Beaumont Theater on the afternoon of Sunday, Jan. 16.

The production, which began previews on Nov. 11 and opened Dec. 13, was originally scheduled to run through Feb. 6. The show recently canceled a number of performances due to the detection of Covid within the company.

When it closes, the production will have played 28 previews and 35 regular performances.

Flying Over Sunset, which received mixed-to-positive reviews (and made Deadline’s Top 10 year-end best list), features a book and direction by James Lapine, music by Tom Kitt, lyrics by Michael Korie, and choreography by Michelle Dorrance. The cast included Harry Hadden-Paton as Huxley, Carmen Cusack as Luce and Tony Yazbeck as Grant,...

‘Flying Over Sunset’ Broadway Review: Musical Day Tripping With Cary Grant & Some Famous Friends
Image
Aldous Huxley, Cary Grant and Clare Boothe Luce – a grouping that might sound more like the set-up for a joke than the premise of a musical – were, in real life, proponents of lysergic acid diethylamide, what we’d now call early adopters. Though each of them tripped the light phantasmagorical during the 1950s, the writer, the movie star and the ambassador never actually came face to face, much less mind to mind, at least as far as we know, but they somehow should have, a situation the new, very original and often delightful musical Flying Over Sunset seeks to rectify.

With a book and direction by James Lapine (Into The Woods), music by Tom Kitt (Next to Normal) and lyrics by Michael Korie (Grey Gardens), Flying Over Sunset boasts a top-notch creative team and cast and a physical production that’s one of the most ravishing on Broadway. Carmen Cusack (Bright Star) as Luce,...

Morgan Freeman, Laurie Metcalf, Ellen Burstyn, Laura Linney, Matthew Broderick Among All-Star Lineup For Virtual Broadway Play Series
Image
Morgan Freeman, Laurie Metcalf, John Malkovich, Zachary Quinto, Vanessa Williams, David Alan Grier, Elizabeth Ashley, Matthew Broderick, Lucas Hedges and Paul Mescal are among the actors who’ll take part in a benefit series of new, livestreamed stage reading productions of works by such major playwrights as Gore Vidal, David Mamet, Kenneth Lonergan and Donald Margulies.

Producer Jeffrey Richards announced the new line-up of the weekly Spotlight On Plays, a web series at the recently launched Broadway’s Best Shows website. Proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to The Actor’s Fund, with the livestreamed events available for a strictly limited amount of time.

Productions are all-new and performed remotely, with directors including Mamet, Phylicia Rashad and Daniel Sullivan given leeway in how to present their shows. (Watch a trailer for the series above.)

The series, which follows last May’s production of Love Letters with Bryan Cranston and Sally Field,...

SXSW 2016 Exclusive Poster Debut: Yen Tan's 1985
We're gearing up to cover SXSW 2016, which begins next week in Austin, Texas, and to kick things off, we're happy to premiere the poster for Yen Tan's short film 1985. Mr. Tan wrote and directed the film, which stars Robert Sella and Lindsay Pulsipher. Mr. Tan is a personal acquaintance of long standing, so, frankly, I'm not entirely objective, but he made the wonderfully on-point drama Pit Stop a couple years back, as well as a flock of good short films over the years. He's also a very good poster artist, and we've premiered his work in the past. 1985 will enjoy its world premiere on Friday, March 11, at 10:15 p.m. at the Vimeo Theater, as part of the Texas Shorts Competition, and...
