Netflix produced its first non-documentary feature in 2015. It was called Beasts of No Nation, and it was fine. However, the film did not get nominated for an Academy Award. Lots has changed in the last decade.
Your favorite streamer often gets nominated for major awards each year. 2025 is no different. Emilia Pérez has 13 nominations alone, including one for Best Picture. So far, Netflix has yet to get a win in that category, and Emilia Pérez is not the favorite this year, either.
In fact, Netflix has also almost been entirely shut out of wins in the acting categories. Only Laura Dern won, and that was for Best Supporting Actress in 2020. But the streamer does do well in some other categories. Those might not be part of the Big 6, but when it comes to documentaries, Netflix knows what it is doing. Just see below, and you'll know.

Disney+ has dropped first-look images for its upcoming U.K. original series “The Stolen Girl,” a psychological thriller toplining Denise Gough, Holliday Grainger, Ambika Mod and Jim Sturgess.
The five-part limited series, previously developed under the working title “Playdate,” comes from scribe Catherine Moulton (“Baptiste”) and helmer Eva Husson (“Mothering Sunday”). The project adapts Alex Dahl’s bestselling page-turner “Playdate.”
The story follows Elisa, a mother whose world implodes after her nine-year-old daughter Lucia vanishes during what was meant to be an innocent sleepover. The seemingly perfect host mother Rebecca, along with her daughter Josie, disappear without a trace – leaving behind only a vacant holiday rental where their supposed family home once stood.
As authorities launch a Europe-wide search, scrutiny falls heavily on Elisa and her husband Fred while family secrets bubble to the surface. Narrative promises to explore whether Rebecca’s shocking actions could have deeper justification than initially apparent.

Netflix has decided not to return to Mount Olympus, canceling its series Kaos after a single season.
The decision comes about six weeks after the dark comedy, based on Greek and Roman mythology and created by Charlie Covell (The End of the F***ing World), made its debut on the streamer. Kaos appeared in Netflix’s top 10 charts for English-language series in each of its first four weeks, topping out at No. 3 for the week of Sept. 2-8. It earned 14.9 million views (measured by total viewing time divided by running time) over those weeks, a middling number by the streamer’s standards.
In the United States, the show had 3.34 million views as of Sept. 8, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings (viewing totals for subsequent weeks aren’t yet available).

Hungarian filmmaker Kornél Mundruczó (Pieces of a Woman, White God) has signed on to direct The Revolution According to Kamo, an ambitious biopic on the early life of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin.
The feature is based on a script by Cold War director Pawel Pawlikowski and Ben Hopkins, co-writer of Kirill Serebrennikov’s Cannes competition entry Limonov: The Ballad of Eddie. The Revolution According to Kamo spans 30 years from 1891 to 1922, tracing the birth of one of history’s most murderous dictators as seen through the eyes of his devoted friend, ally, and henchman Kamo. The Georgian-language feature is being prepped for a 2025 shoot in Georgia.
“It’s less about a man being born evil, but about the mechanics of power and how one man rises to the top,” said Mundruczó. “But it’s also about a passionate friendship between these two men who knew each other since they were boys.

On Jan. 12, screenwriter Simon Stephenson sent an email to the Writers Guild of America’s senior director of credits Lesley Mackey asking to set up a call to discuss an important matter. The CAA-repped writer, whose credits include Pixar’s “Luca” and StudioCanal’s “Paddington 2,” wrote, “I’ve encountered a credits-related issue on quite a high profile WGA-covered project.” According to the email exchange reviewed by Variety, a call between the two took place, and, in a follow-up missive, Stephenson wrote, “the evidence the holdovers screenplay has been plagiarised line-by-line from frisco is genuinely overwhelming – anybody who looks at even the briefest sample pretty much invariably uses the word ‘brazen.’”
Stephenson was referring to his own screenplay “Frisco,” a drama centered on a world-weary middle-aged children’s doctor and the 15-year-old patient he gets stuck looking after, and David Hemingson’s “The Holdovers” — a drama revolving around a...

Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara are set to star in Pawel Pawlikowski’s next feature The Island (working title), a dramatic thriller scheduled to start shooting next year. FilmNation Entertainment will launch international sales next month at the American Film Market.
Written and directed by Pawlikowski, the flick is inspired by true events and follows an attractive American 1930s couple who turn their back on civilization to build their own private paradise on a deserted island and live off the land. But after a millionaire passing by on his yacht inadvertently turns them into a tabloid newspaper sensation, a self-styled countess arrives out of the blue with her two strange lovers with plans to take over the island and build a luxury hotel.
The synopsis continues: This larger-than-life European “countess” and her entourage soon begin to threaten the Eden that the couple has built and battle lines are quickly drawn.

Austrian filmmaker Marie Kreutzer clinched the best film award in the main Official Competition of the 66th London Film Festival with her latest feature Corsage, starring Vicky Krieps.
The historical drama, which is also the Austrian entry for the best international feature film Oscar race, follows the disgruntled Empress Elisabeth (Krieps), a 19th-century royal who, upon turning 40, begins to rebel against her carefully orchestrated public image.
The festival jury, headed by producer Tanya Seghatchian, actor Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones), filmmaker/playwright Kemp Powers (One Night in Miami), filmmaker Chaitanya Tamhane (The Disciple), and journalist Charles Gant described the film as a “mesmerizing and original interpretation of the life of the Austrian Empress Elisabeth.”

London Film Festival Review: Matthew Warchus’ Opening-Night Movie ‘Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical’
There are stories so good they can withstand any amount of retelling. Matilda began life as Roald Dahl’s rollicking tale of an outrageously spirited, clever little girl who defeats the bullying headmistress whose vocation is to make children miserable. The Royal Shakespeare Company turned it into a Christmas musical that burst the banks of the festive season, running for years and winning seven Olivier Awards in 2012 in London, then five Tonys the following year in New York. Now, director Matthew Warchus, along with writer Dennis Kelly and songwriter Tim Minchin, has directed the London Film Festival opener Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical for the screen. And once again, it is an absolute blast.
From the moment it begins, with a series of glowingly lit babies in cribs “singing” about how their besotted parents think they’re all geniuses, it is clear that Warchus and the team have not...

Walking the sunny red carpet into the Oscars Sunday afternoon, tested to the max and mask free, Hollywood was all smiles. Legendary chief Mary Parent and Warner Media executive Ann Sarnoff wondered just how many wins “Dune” would take home.
After a long and grueling off-and-on pandemic production in New Zealand, a grinding festival circuit, and an endless full-throttle awards campaign, producer Tanya Seghatchian and Netflix production executive Sean Berney wondered how many wins “The Power of the Dog” would actually land. (One out of 12.)
And since launching in virtual Sundance 2021, writer-director Sian Heder, her silver gown shimmering, crossed her fingers that “Coda” might win all three of its possible Oscars. It did, including Best Picture, the first for a streamer: AppleTV+.
Alas. None of these talking points grazed the top headline of Oscars 2022 as movie star Will Smith, on the verge of the apex of his career, slapped presenter Chris Rock.

The Netflix western “The Power of the Dog” entered these awards with a leading 12 nominations, which is also the most nominations any Netflix film has ever received. To achieve that the film had to battle against Apple’s “Coda,” which only had three nominations but won crucial awards from the Screen Actors Guild, Writers Guild, and Producers Guild, the last of which uses the same kind of ranked-choice voting as the Oscars.

As predicted, Jane Campion won the Best Director Oscar during Sunday’s 94th Academy Awards ceremony for her intricate work on the psychological neo-western “The Power of the Dog.” (See the complete Oscars winners list.) Campion is now the third female to win the directing prize following Chloe Zhao for “Nomadland” (2020) just last year and Kathryn Bigelow for “The Hurt Locker” (2009) a dozen years ago. In the entire history of the Oscars, Campion is the only woman to be nominated twice in this category, following her first bid for “The Piano” (1993).

Oscar nominee profile: Jane Campion (‘The Power of the Dog’) would be 3rd woman to win Best Director
Nearly three decades ago, Jane Campion made history as the second female Best Director Oscar nominee after Lina Wertmüller. The film that brought her this recognition was 1993’s “The Piano,” for which she ended up winning Best Original Screenplay. In the time since, Kathryn Bigelow has blazed a trail as the first woman to win the directing prize, and Chloe Zhao followed in her footsteps just last year. Campion’s current nomination for helming “The Power of the Dog” establishes her as the only woman with two in the category and could lead to its first instance of back-to-back female victories.

Academy president David Rubin and Oscar show producer Will Packer clearly enjoyed escaping from the anxieties of this year’s Oscars for one relaxed evening, as this year’s postponed Governors Awards finally unfolded the Friday before the big night Sunday, in a low-key alternative Oscar universe. It’s all come down to this. Ninety-four years of Oscar history have been digested and cross-examined to help yield the critical answer: Which films and performances will win Academy Awards on March 27?
By the sheer scope of its nomination tally, Netflix is the closest it’s ever been to taking home the statuette for the Academy’s most prestigious prize. Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” has won the most critics’ awards for best picture, and the film has walked away with the top honor at the BAFTA and DGA ceremonies, which have Oscar-voter crossover. However, in what feels like an even divide, some Academy members told Variety they were ranking it at No. 1 on their preferential ballot, while others were putting it toward the bottom of that category.

Apple Studios emerged the big winner of what some say is an important Oscar precursor on Saturday night, as “Coda” took the top film prize at the annual Producers Guild Awards.
What began as a Sundance sales sensation directed by Sian Heder — the heart-tugging story following the only hearing family member in a tribe of charismatic New England fishermen — won the Darryl F. Zanuck award for best motion picture producing. Other notable film winners at Los Angeles’ Fairmont Hotel were Questlove’s “Summer of Soul” for documentary feature, and the musical juggernaut “Encanto” for best producers of an animated film.
“Succession” took home the Norman Felton Award for outstanding episodic drama. Apple’s “Ted Lasso” continued its trophy collection spree by claiming the Danny Thomas Award for outstanding television comedy. HBO’s “Mare of Easttown” won the David L. Wolper award for outstanding producer of a limited series.

Ahead of tonight’s Producers Guild of America awards ceremony, the annual breakfast with the nominees for the Darryl F. Zanuck Award at the Skirball Cultural Center.
The theme of the panel, moderated by PGA president Lisa Fisher, was Steven Spielberg, nominated as one of the producers for his musical “West Side Story.”
During the conversation, the two-time Oscar-winning director — for “Schindler’s List” (1993) and “Saving Private Ryan” (1998) — shared with the audience that he’ll never direct another musical in his career, although he’ll be involved as a producer on some. He’s currently co-producing the musical adaptation of “The Color Purple” with Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks in the lead roles. He helmed the 1985 Alice Walker adaptation, which was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won him his first DGA prize, though he failed score an Oscar nomination for best director.

Steven Spielberg cited the hit Netflix Korean drama Squid Game as a game changer for the industry. Spielberg was among the nominated producers for the PGA Awards Zanuck Award speaking on a panel Saturday Morning at the Skirball Center in Los Angeles.
“Squid Game comes along and changes the math entirely for all of us,” Spielberg said. “Thank you, Ted [Sarandos].”
Spielberg pointed to the Netflix CEO, who was sitting in the audience. His Squid Game comment came during a discussion about the importance of movie stars in casting. Spielberg noted the cyclical nature of the star system, crediting the streaming world with allowing unknown actors to anchor series.
“A long time ago it was domestic stars that brought the audience into movies,” Spielberg said. “Today, it’s interesting, unknown people can star entire miniseries, can be in movies.”

The Producers Guild of America Awards will be held on March 19, honoring the best achievements in TV and film production, and since the Oscar for Best Picture goes to the producers, the PGA’s Best Theatrical Motion Picture award is one of the best hints we get into what the Oscars might do, especially since both awards decide Best Picture with the same kind of preferential ballot. This year both the PGA Awards and the Oscars could do something they’ve never done before: honor a streaming movie.
SEEBAFTAs: ‘The Power of the Dog’ wins Best Picture and Director, ‘Dune’ takes 5
