Christopher Nolan’s Most Underrated Movie Starred Acting Legend Who Allegedly “Miffed him”
Image
People might know about this iconic collaboration, but Al Pacino and Christopher Nolan have created cinematic magic with an underrated 2002 gem, Insomnia. However, since appearing in the film, the duo has refrained from reuniting in any other project, even though Nolan is known for being loyal to his cast.

Well, turns out, in a 2014 interview, Al Pacino revealed that things had “cooled” between him and the Oppenheimer director after he turned down a role Nolan offered him years later. Though Pacino kept the title of the mystery film to himself, he admitted he might have “miffed” Christopher Nolan by rejecting it.

This subtle rift added a curious layer to their only collaboration—Insomnia, Christopher Nolan’s 2002 psychological thriller that he later named his most underrated movie in the book The Nolan Variations.

Al Pacino Thinks He “Miffed” Christopher Nolan by Turning Down a Mystery Role

All 12 Christopher Nolan Movies, Ranked From Worst To Best
Image
There aren't many directors who can sell a movie with their name alone these days, but Christopher Nolan is one of them. Known for his larger-than-life forays into comic-book movies, heady sci-fi, and formidable thrillers, Nolan represents a Hollywood future committed to craft, often shooting on film and using elaborate practical effects. He's also established himself as a modern proponent of the theatrical experience, crafting works that audiences know are best experienced on a cinema screen — preferably IMAX.

But Nolan's extended filmography is populated with more modest efforts as well: remakes of foreign crime thrillers, micro-budget neo-noirs, and period dramas about warring magicians. You can see the trajectory of a director who mastered his art form over time, as studios grew to trust that his vision alone would get audiences to theaters. That journey included some lesser works, but Nolan has never made a truly bad film, just ones that fall short of his best.

Dakota Johnson is a Bloody Mess in First Look at 'Verity'
Image
The drama surrounding Justin Baldoni's It Ends With Us may be ongoing, but Colleen Hoover fans are looking toward the author's next adaptation, Verity. Set to hit theaters next year, we now have our first look at cast members Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett in the new psychological thriller, and in stark contrast to last year's Blake Lively film, this one is a lot bloodier.

Photos have surfaced online (seen below) showing Johnson on the set of Verity wearing a long peacoat and headphones, and in a few of the images, her face and neck are covered in blood as Hartnett guides her across a busy street. Another image shows her with a vape, while others have her in her own little world as she walks down the sidewalk with her headphones on, tuning out the surrounding noise. Hartnett portrays Jeremy Crawford in the film, while Johnson plays Lowen Ashleigh,...

Image
If you think that Oscars and a lifetime of accolades can make a person feel untouchable, think again. Sandra Bullock–who got an Oscar and a fanbase that would follow her to the ends of the Earth–found herself quaking in her boots when she went toe-to-toe with two Marvel titans.

Talent is never enough. With one of the finest casts under your belt, it’s still easy to feel the pressure. Bullock, an actress whose name is practically a synonym for box office success, took on one of her most emotionally intense roles in The Unforgivable. Even with an Oscar under her belt, she couldn’t escape the nerves of working alongside actors like Jon Bernthal and Vincent D’Onofrio.

Every Christopher Nolan Movie Soundtrack, Ranked by Replayability

Director Christopher Nolan is often regarded as one of the best filmmakers of the 21st century, if not all time. Like most auteurs, Nolan has a unique vision for telling stories. But unlike other directors, he's not shy about telling them in multiple genres. Christopher Nolan's wide variety of films makes for a ton of interesting creative decisions. From the set designs and cinematography to the intricately crafted screenplays and imagery, Nolan's films are brilliant.

Fans will point to various aspects of Nolan's filmography that stick with them. Obviously, when crafting one of the best trilogies of all time in the Batman universe, characters become a staple of the films. Nolan's Bruce Wayne, Joker and Bane are forever iconic. However, other aspects of his films stand out as well. Many of his films are some of the most thematically resonant, such as Interstellar and Inception, while others, like Memento, stand out for their storytelling structure.

This Is the Most Underrated Christopher Nolan Movie
Image
Christopher Nolan is truly one of the most visionary filmmakers working in Hollywood right now. Rarely does a director command high budgets, and final-cut privileges, and pull a huge star cast even for smaller roles. However, Nolan has managed to make conceptually intimate yet grand-scale films that have earned blockbuster numbers.

The filmmaker broke into the scene with his black-and-white indie thriller Following, which earned him a reputation at film festivals. However, it was his sophomore effort, Memento, which made him a force to be reckoned with. He was nominated for an original screenplay Oscar for his reverse-screenplay format and the film put him on the map.

Nolan went on to make The Dark Knight Trilogy and other large-scale blockbusters like Interstellar, Inception, and more recently Oppenheimer, which won him the Oscar for Best Director. However, one film of his has nested itself in the corner...

Christopher Nolan's Only Remake Features 1 of Al Pacino's Most Underrated Performances
Image
Christopher Nolan debuted as a filmmaker in 1998 with his indie-darling Following, which was, itself, ahem, followed by his breakthrough feature, Memento. That one-two punch announced this London-born director as one of the most promising of his generation, but he wasn't immediately handed the reigns to DC's most prolific superhero, Batman. First, Nolan had to prove himself by helming a modestly budgeted remake starring two of Hollywood's most talented actors.

Insomnia is a high-tension thriller centered around a game of cat-and-mouse between its two main stars, Al Pacino and Robin Williams. Both stars trust an otherwise novice director to help them craft remarkable performances, very much unlike most others in their careers. The result was a movie so different from everything else this talented trio of artists ever made that Nolan himself now considers Insomnia to be his most underrated film.

Image
The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering Insomnia was Written and Narrated by Mike Holtz, Edited by Jaime Vasquez, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

In 2002, Christopher Nolan directed a film set in a small town in Alaska where the sun doesn’t go down for days at a time. The film starred the great Al Pacino as a once again decorated but tortured Detective at full Heat level intensity, squaring off against the legendary Robin Williams in an against-type role as a creepy, cerebral murderer of a teenage girl. And somehow……some way…..it’s considered underrated. Christopher Nolan. Al Pacino. Robin Williams. Underrated. These are not words that go together. So, let’s talk about just Wtf Happened to Insomnia.

These days, in the year of our dark lord 2024, Christopher Nolan is an undeniable titan in Hollywood. After films like his Batman trilogy,...

‘Insomnia’ – Investigating the Hard-Boiled Thrills of Christopher Nolan’s Most Underrated Movie
Image
Detective thrillers have always had one foot in the horror genre, often starring morally complex investigators forced to confront the nastiest facets of the human condition while hunting down rogue killers. Naturally, these hard-boiled yarns are as common as they are popular, and it takes a special kind of storyteller to extract a meaningful experience from such familiar tropes.

While he’s mostly known for his multi-million dollar epics, I’d argue that Christopher Nolan is one of these rare talents, with the British director starting out his career with a compelling trio of down-to-earth thrillers that culminated in 2002’s Insomnia – arguably the filmmaker’s most underrated film. And with Nolan back in the spotlight after miraculously turning an R-rated biopic into a bona fide blockbuster event, I thought that this might be a great opportunity to look back on the filmmaker’s first studio-backed project.

A remake of a...

Christopher Nolan's Insomnia Is by Far His Most Underrated
Image
With a filmography as incredible as Christopher Nolan's, there is bound to be one film that gets lost in the shuffle. In the case of the prolific director that has arguably never made a bad movie, the film in question is 2002's Insomnia. This was Nolan's third feature film after 1998's Following and his 2000 breakthrough effort, Memento, and it began his longstanding relationship with Warner Bros. that lasted until he parted ways with the studio to make Oppenheimer with Universal Pictures.

Despite the fact that Insomnia did decent business and received stellar reviews, it's often overlooked when cinephiles mention some of their favorites from the director. In all honesty, it's a forgotten gem and still his most underrated effort to date.

Insomnia is actually a remake of a 1997 Norwegian film of the same name that starred Stellan Skarsgård. Nolan's version, written by Hillary Seitz, essentially follows the same beats as the original,...

Christopher Nolan Is Right About His Most Underrated Movie
Image
Christopher Nolan thinks his most underrated movie is 2002's Insomnia, which doesn't get half the attention it deserves. Following his micro-budget directorial debut, Following, and his mind-bending breakthrough thriller, Memento, Nolan's third movie was the much bigger Insomnia, a cat-and-mouse chase thriller starring Robin Williams and Al Pacino. The movie was on a much bigger scale than Nolan was used to at the time, as it had a budget of $46 million and had two high-profile stars. However, despite that, Insomnia was only a modest hit, making $113 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo), which is an underperformance relative to its budget.

Insomnia has become mostly forgotten and is rarely in the common debate over what Nolan's best movie is. Nevertheless, Nolan thinks the movie is great and believes it's criminally underrated. In Tom Shone's book, The Nolan Variations: The Movies, Mysteries, and Marvels of Christopher Nolan, the celebrated director explains,...

‘The Unforgivable’ Review: Sandra Bullock Prison Redemption Drama Is A Bleak Slog
Image
Who are these characters? Why should we care about them, or at least care enough to spend two hours with them? These are fundamental questions any filmmaker should start with before endeavoring to make a film. And, yet it’s these very questions that director Nora Fingscheidt and her three screenwriters Peter Craig, Hillary Seitz and Courtenay Miles never seemed to have answered before they began work on the new Sandra Bullock starring Netflix film “The Unforgivable.”

The Unforgivable [Video Review]
Image
Healing the emotional wounds in the present day from the missteps of the past is part of the taxing bliss found in Nora Fingscheidt‘s sophomore feature. A Netflix project penned by three scribes and adapted from TV series, The Unforgivable attempts to classify the human condition through ethical choices — with Sandra Bullock becoming the whipping girl put into submission. Netflix released the film theatrically for two weeks before putting this on their platform December 10th, 2021.

‘The Unforgivable’ Review: Sandra Bullock Plays a Haunted Ex-Con in a Messy Netflix Crime Drama
Image
It’s no surprise that Nora Fingscheidt’s “The Unforgivable” is based on a British miniseries, as this Sandra Bullock ex-con drama about a woman released into the merciless cold of Snohomish, Wisconsin, after a 20-year murder stint is gray enough to seem like it still has one foot planted in Yorkshire. What is surprising, however, is that the ITV show had a cumulative runtime of only 135 minutes, a curious factoid when you consider that Fingscheidt’s version — a Netflix movie which runs just 21 minutes shorter than its source material — is so patchy and spread thin that you’d sooner guess it was trimmed down from a sprawling eight-hour epic.

“The Unforgivable” could have been a beat-for-beat remake of the original without any significant difference to its budget or distribution, and yet

Which isn’t to say that Fingschedit — a German filmmaker looking to capitalize on her volatile 2019 debut “System Crasher...

‘The Unforgivable’ trailer: Sandra Bullock faces off with Viola Davis in redemption drama
Image
Oscar winners Sandra Bullock and Viola Davis headline the all-star cast of Netflix’s “The Unforgivable,” the streaming service’s latest high-profile release with 2022 awards aspirations. A new trailer for the project was released on Tuesday.

Based on the 2009 British television limited series “Unforgiven,” the new film stars Bullock as Ruth, an ex-convict recently released from prison after serving 20 years for killing police officers in cold blood. Out of jail and trying to piece her life back together, Ruth attempts to reconnect with her younger sister after two decades while also facing repercussions from society for her crimes.

“There are several people whose lives she affected by this crime she committed, and there’s a lot of hatred and anger and bitterness and sorrow associated with her release,” Bullock told Entertainment Weekly earlier this year. “She wants to find this one person, the only family she had when she went in,...
