Amazon MGM Studios has set director Michael Showalter’s film for wide theatrical release on Oct. 2, 2026, after having previously dated the project for May 15, 2026. Anne Hathaway leads a cast that also includes Dakota Johnson, Josh Hartnett, Ismael Cruz Cordóva and Brady Wagner.

Director Alejandro Iñárritu’s untitled Warner Bros. movie starring Tom Cruise is also set for release on Oct. 2, 2026.

The first weekend is October has been a rich launch pad for femme thriller movies, particularly those based on bestsellers, i.e. 2014’s Gone Girl ($37.5M) and 2016’s The Girl on the Train ($24.5M opening).

The official synopsis for the adaptation reads: “Struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh is hired as a ghostwriter for renowned author Verity Crawford under mysterious circumstances, but her assignment takes a dark turn after discovering chilling autobiographical notes. Faced with a series of deadly family secrets, Lowen struggles to separate fiction from reality, while also blurring the lines with Verity’s husband, Jeremy.”

Anne Hathaway will star in the upcoming film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s best-selling book “Verity.”

She will play Verity Crawford, a famous author who is unable to finish her thriller novel after a car accident leaves her badly injured and incapacitated. So her husband Jeremy offers a struggling writer named Lowen a huge sum of money to complete the remaining books in the series. Lowen accepts the gig but uncovers dark secrets in the process — including an unfinished manuscript that hints at chilling admissions about Verity and her family’s past — leaving Lowen to determine if Verity is a gifted fictionist or deranged psychopath. Hathaway is set to star in Amazon MGM Studios’ upcoming feature Verity, which Showalter is helming. Based on the No. 1 New York Times bestseller by Colleen Hoover, the current script is written by Nick Antosca. The Hollywood Reporter announced that Eat the Cat’s Nick Antosca and Alex Hedlund are set to produce the project, while a script is currently in the works by Hillary Seitz. Seitz previously wrote Christopher Nolan’s 2002 film Insomnia, Eagle Eye in 2008, and 2021’s The Unforgivable.

The bestselling novel tells the story of Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer who accepts a job from Jeremy Crawford, the husband of famed author Verity Crawford, to finish his wife’s successful thriller series.

With It Ends With Us slated for release this summer, another one of Colleen Hoover's chart-topping novels is headed to the big screen. Detective thrillers have always had one foot in the horror genre, often starring morally complex investigators forced to confront the nastiest facets of the human condition while hunting down rogue killers. Naturally, these hard-boiled yarns are as common as they are popular, and it takes a special kind of storyteller to extract a meaningful experience from such familiar tropes.

A Netflix project penned by three scribes and adapted from TV series, The Unforgivable attempts to classify the human condition through ethical choices — with Sandra Bullock becoming the whipping girl put into submission. It’s no surprise that Nora Fingscheidt’s “The Unforgivable” is based on a British miniseries, as this Sandra Bullock ex-con drama about a woman released into the merciless cold of Snohomish, Wisconsin, after a 20-year murder stint is gray enough to seem like it still has one foot planted in Yorkshire. What is surprising, however, is that the ITV show had a cumulative runtime of only 135 minutes, a curious factoid when you consider that Fingscheidt’s version — a Netflix movie which runs just 21 minutes shorter than its source material — is so patchy and spread thin that you’d sooner guess it was trimmed down from a sprawling eight-hour epic.

Oscar winners Sandra Bullock and Viola Davis headline the all-star cast of Netflix’s “The Unforgivable,” the streaming service’s latest high-profile release with 2022 awards aspirations. A new trailer for the project was released on Tuesday.
