There are other possible possibilities with TV characters who end up being different from expected, such as the gag where the show jokingly introduces one character before directing focus to a less conventionally appealing one (which might also involve the first character's death). Misleading ad campaigns for movies and TV shows might also (intentionally) confuse the audience about who the main character is supposed to be. Hopefully, the decoy protagonist is a satisfying twist, rather than annoying shock bait.

Luke Goss stars in Nick Lyon's Annihilation Earth, a post-apocalyptic TV movie that was once called Doomsday, but was changed when it was mistakenly taken to be a series based on Neil Marshall's film of the same name (and since we broke that rumor, my apologies).

Anyway, now that that confusion is over and done with, SyFy has given the flick a release date (December 12, 2009) and released the first destruction filled trailer.

Synopsis:

An attack on a supercollider puts the planet on a collision course with total destruction.

Annihilation Earth was written by Rafael Jordan and also stars the great Colin Salmon, Xenia Seeberg and Theo Cross.

For a film that didn't exactly perform so well at the box office (but which I supremely loved) it's hard to fathom why it was decided that Doomsday would be a hit on the small screen. But indeed it is true, our own projectcyclops discovered that Neil Marshall's apocalyptic virus flick is being made into a made-for tv-movie by The Scifi Channel for broadcast in 2009. But is it a sequel? A prequel? Another adventure set in the same universe at the same time as agent Eden Sinclair infiltrated Scotland? Who knows, the deets are sketchy at best.

The film is being directed by Nick Lyon (Species: The Awakening) and was written by Rafael Jordan (Yeti: Curse of the Snow Demon). It is set to star Hellboy II's Luke Goss, Colin Salmon, Marina Sirtis, and Xenia Seeberg among many others.
