Mystères à Twin Peaks (1990)
David Lynch on 'Twin Peaks' Revival: 'The Woods Are Full of Mystery'
Mystères à Twin Peaks (1990)
The season premiere of Twin Peaks is days away, and there is hardly any information about its episodes available. The synopsis for the first two episodes quizzically reads, "The stars turn and a time presents itself." Naturally, this is exactly what filmmaker David Lynch wants.

"These days, movie trailers practically tell the whole story," he says in his nasal, matter-of-fact, plainspoken manner. "I think it's really harmful. For me, personally, I don't want to know anything when I go into a theater. I like to discover it, get into that world,...

Which Critics’ Choice Noms and Snubs Could Actually Change the Fortunes of Oscar Hopefuls?
‘Hell or High Water’ (Courtesy: Lorey Sebastian/CBS Films)

By: Scott Feinberg

The Hollywood Reporter

What are we to make of the Critics’ Choice Award nominations announced Thursday morning?

On the one hand, the hundreds of members of the Broadcast Film Critics Association, which decides the Critics’ Choice film nominees (and of which I am a voting member), has precisely zero overlap with the thousands of members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which decides the Oscar nominees. On the other hand, I would argue that the Critics’ Choice noms are as likely to impress Oscar voters as any set of noms that precede their own — deservedly or not, they confer a sense of importance and prestige upon a film, albeit slightly less so when there are, say, seven nominees for best director, as there are this year — and therefore could jump-start or stunt a contender’s momentum.

'Hell or High Water': The Story Behind Summer's Sleeper Hit
Chris Pine kept fixating on a single image. "I had this picture in my head," the 35-year-old actor recalls, his voice echoing over a speakerphone from Austin, Texas. "It was two guys on a porch, real rustic. One of them is sitting, the other is standing, kind of leaning on one of the porch's columns. Both are sort of staring out in the distance while the sun's going down." He stops for a second, then continues. "I just kind of got into my brain after I read the script. It...

Film Review: ‘A Million Ways to Die in the West’ Suffers Because Seth MacFarlane Casts Himself
Chicago – A feature-length comedy is a daunting undertaking. But being consistently funny for 2 straight hours is like climbing Mount Everest blindfolded with no arms while taking selfies using your feet.

Special effects mean nothing in the land of comedy. It’s all about the writing and the acting (in that order). To give you a sense of who you’re working with here, I find “Anchorman” hilarious and “Burn After Reading” for a dark comedy. Seth MacFarlane’s “Ted” hits more than it misses, but his return accomplishes the reverse with “A Million Ways to Die in the West” without a reason for being.

Rating: 2.0/5.0

Double entendres like “That’s horseshit!” (referring to intentionally placed manure in the middle of a statement of disdain) fall flat while a game at the fair called “Runaway Slave” is genuinely funny (and finds a way for a recently unchained man to appear for a perfect post-credits cameo). Likewise,...

Cowboys and Aliens Ride to DVD
By Bryan Buss

(June 2011)

“True Grit” and “Battle: Los Angeles” hit video in June, along with “Company Men” and “Big Mommas,” fairy tales and pregnant porn stars.

June 7

“Another Year” — Revered Brit director Mike Leigh scored another critical home run with this dramedy about a married couple and their family and friends. Leads Jim Broadbent and Ruth Sheen and supporting actress Lesley Manville were all singled out for their performances, and Leigh was honored with an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay. The film played well to arthouse crowds, grossing a respectable $3.2 million.

“The Company Men” — Director-writer John Wells’ drama about corporate downsizing boasted a stellar cast with Ben Affleck, Chris Cooper, Kevin Costner, Tommy Lee Jones and Maria Bello, and while critics were mostly enthusiastic, calling it solid and engrossing if a bit melodramatic, the theme may have hit too close to home for many as the film grossed only $4.5 million.

Q&A: Mitch Glazer on Megan Fox, Mickey Rourke, and His New Miami Gangster Series
Mitch Glazer and Mickey Rourke. Courtesy of Lorey Sebastian/Image Entertainment.Hollywood just hasn’t been the same since Mitch Glazer moved back to Miami. The screenwriter and his wife, Kelly Lynch, usually keep benevolent watch over the movie crowd’s social scene from their breathtaking Lautner house up in the hills, but they are currently sweating away in the Sunshine State on Magic City, a new series for Chris Albrecht’s Starz network. West Coast editor Krista Smith caught up with Glazer to talk about the new show and his directorial debut, Passion Play, which opens in limited release today.

Visual Histories: True Grit Cinematographer Roger Deakins Talks About His “Shot of the Year”
Photograph by Lorey Sebastian/© 2010 Paramount Pictures. Is Roger Deakins this year’s Peter O’Toole? The Coen brothers’ go-to cinematographer has been nominated for nine Oscars over 16 years, for films that include The Shawshank Redemption, Fargo, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, and No Country for Old Men, but he’s never clinched a win. And while Deakins brushes off this bewildering oversight—“I’m fortunate I get to make these films,” he says—industry insiders do not. As the L.A. Times recently put it, “[c]an Roger Deakins finally have an Oscar, please?”...

Why True Grit Matters in the Face of Adversity
Photograph by Lorey Sebastian/Paramount Pictures/Everett Collection

Dan Heath and Chip Heath explain why some of the biggest victories are won an inch at a time.

Sometimes a slog can be beautiful. In 1990, Sally Herndon became the program manager in North Carolina for Project Assist, an antismoking initiative. Her mandate was to improve the public's health by reducing smoking. But how could she prevail against one of the world's most powerful lobbies -- on its home soil of North Carolina? A knockout blow seemed highly unlikely. Rather, Herndon knew that to succeed she would need to chip away at the problem.

Herndon and her team spent two years planning, but just as their rollout began, they suffered a terrible setback. In 1993, the tobacco industry persuaded the state legislature to pass a law mandating that 20% of the space in government buildings be reserved for smoking. Devilishly, the law limited local governments from passing stricter regulation.

Chicago – The transition from hot young actor to the domestic picket fence is about ten years and a shadowy crow’s foot. One day you’re a galaxy queen, superhero and Donnie Darko, next you’re playing house in “Brothers.”

The contemporary scenario features Tobey Maguire as Captain Sam Cahill, a hard-charging and disciplined Marine platoon commander, about to be shipped for his fourth tour into Afghanistan in 2007. His wife Grace (Natalie Portman) is the loyal military wife, ready to stay home and keep raising the family’s two daughters, with a little help from Sam’s father (Sam Shepard) and his father’s wife (Mare Winningham).

Complicating matters is the black sheep of the family, Sam’s brother Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal). He’s just been released from prison, and his familial conflicts bubble to the surface when confronted again with his perfect brother (Shepard’s character is also...
