Ice Cube said he never expected to be onstage accepting a gilded gramophone with his fellow N.W.A members, but that’s what happened Saturday when he, Mc-Ren, DJ Yella and the mother and son of late rapper Eazy-e received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy at the Recording Academy’s Special Merit Awards.

“My man, Dr. Dre, is not here. He wanted to make sure I let you know he’s not hating. He a billionaire. He got shit to do,” Cube said to laughter and applause. He thanked Dre for his “brilliance,...

Tech Expert Tom Scott Explains Why YouTube Will Never Run Out Of Unique URLs
Ten years after its inception, YouTube counts billions of video views each day, and its worldwide popularity is only increasing. With so many videos now live on the site, some users may wonder if YouTube will ever run out of the 11-digit video IDs it uses to make each upload unique.

As content creator Tom Scott explains, that won’t be a problem. Scott, known as an expert on technology and other geeky topics, used his latest release to discuss video IDs and the almost-innumerable amount of 11-character combinations that can possibly be created.

As Scott explains, YouTube’s video ID system, which can be seen in any URL that leads to one of the site’s uploads, uses a 64-character language. That means, for each of the 11 spaces in one Video ID, there are 64 different characters that can be used. The options include both uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers,...

DJ Z-Trip Revives Silent Film Classic at Tribeca Film Festival
There should be little, if any, link between Pete Rock and Cl Smooth's iconic 1992 hip-hop track "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)" and silent film star Harold Lloyd's 1928 action-comedy classic Speedy. But Z-Trip, the genre-bending Los Angeles musician who provided a live DJ score for the film Wednesday night at the Tribeca Film Festival, has carved a 15-year career unearthing unorthodox throughlines.

In this case, it was Pete Rock's instantly recognizable looped horns of Tom Scott's "Today" laced over one character's call-to-arms bugle blast, just...

Want To Know Where Lyric Videos Came From? Watch This Brief History.
Way back in 2008, I put out a question to the the online video world: “Can someone please make a typographic web series?” The request was made after watching some of the more than impressive animated wordplay from motion designer Brian Cain, who in one video captures perhaps the best post-Swingers pieces of dialogue involving Vince Vaughn in vivid detail just with the use of text. Almost five years later, it looks like the recording industry at large (spurred by fans of singalong), kind of answered my call to action with the advent of the lyric video. And Tom Scott explains how it all came to be. The London-based Sky1 HD Gadget Geek and old school YouTube creator (who uploaded his first video way back in June 2006) recently published A Brief History of Lyric Videos. In the two-minute and 21-second video, Scott imitates the genre and explains the origin of...

Questlove Wants Pete Rock To Reconsider Fiasco With Lupe
'I'm glad that Lupe did it,' Questlove tells MTV News of Lupe Fiasco's 'T.R.O.Y' sample on his new single 'Around My Way.'

Lupe Fiasco took on a ton of criticism this week when he sampled Pete Rock and Cl Smooth's "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)" on his new single, "Around My Way," but Questlove is in full support of the Chicago Mc.

"I would hope that Pete would reconsider his position because it's clearly an homage to his legacy," the Roots drummer told MTV News on Wednesday.

After Fiasco dropped his new single on Tuesday, Pete Rock took to Twitter to chastise Lu and the song's producers for remaking the song, which he and Cl Smooth released back in 1992 as a dedication to their fallen friend and Heavy D & the Boyz group member Troy "Trouble T" Dixon.

Turns out things aren't all good between Pete Rock and Lupe Fiasco after all.

On Tuesday, the heralded hip-hop producer took to Twitter and lashed out at the Chicago Mc for recording "Around My Way (Freedom Ain't Free)," a remake of his and Cl Smooth's 1992 single "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)," but a day later tweeted that he and Lu had worked out their differences. But according to Lupe, that's not the case.

"We wasn't on the phone like, 'Oh, I love you, Pete.' At the end of the day, I was hot. My crew was hot, the people who put it together was hot,...

When Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth dropped "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)" 20 years ago, the celebrated rap duo was still reeling over the unexpected death of their dear friend Troy "Trouble T" Dixon of Heavy D & the Boyz. What began as the most personal of lyrical eulogies soon became an iconic hip-hop track, so when Lupe Fiasco reworked the "T.R.O.Y." instrumental for his new single "Around My Way (Freedom Ain't Free)" on Monday, things were all good until Pete Rock chimed in.

"No disrespect to lupe fiasco and i like him alot but Troy should be left alone. Feel so violated, the beat is next to my heart and was made Outta anguish and pain. When it's like that it...

Watch: ‘Welcome to Life’ Imagines Better Living Through Technology as Ruined By Lawyers
Why Watch? Last year’s Transcendent Man dealt with Ray Kurzweil and the possible future where human life is extended thanks to computer memory, The Cloud and our own egos. In Tom Scott‘s new short, we find that death might be preferable once the lawyers have taken over. It’s straightforward sci-fi that pulls off the storytelling magic of placing you at the center of it – a movie that directs its attention to you and manages to nail down a universal humor. You’re dead. Now what? What will it cost? Only 5 minutes. Skip Work. You’ve Got Time For More Short Films...

Five Youtube Experiences to brighten Your Week
Did I outdo myself? I’m not too sure; it’s probably too close to call. That’s a lie, I definitely did outdo myself – just watch clip No.3 and you’ll be in stitches!

This fortnight I have collected together a fine clowder (I know it’s a word for a group of cats, but I‘m in a rebellious mood) of Youtube clips. And not one of them features a cat! There’s a hilarious advert; unfortunate attempt to recite Shakespeare; a challenging ascent; yet more Arnold Schwarzenegger quotes; and finally, a marvelous short film.

Tuck in!

5. Sticky Buddy Dub [Nsfw]

The Sticky Buddy is a reusable lint roller that, according to this advert can be used on pets, clothing, human hair and carpets. Which is fair enough right? Except that this advert depicts an old lady rolling the device over her pet dog and inspecting the impressive quantity...

Photos: 10 Awesome Ways Project Glass Could Change Your Life
Tom Scott
After watching the concept video for Google Project Glass on repeat for the past 24 hours, technophiles have emerged from their bleary-eyed analysis and started breaking down the concept.

Aren't glasses easily breakable? Where would the battery go? How will it protect privacy?

A British man named Tom Scott even went as far as filming his own parody video pointing out some of the prototype's obvious cons -- visibility for one.

But what about the more fantastical ways Google Project Glass could make our lives more entertaining, if the goggles perform at their level best?

The specs could provide access to unlimited music and videos, or provide instant answers to questions users have in the daily lives.

We've compiled a list of 10 conceptual ideas that would be game changers in the entertainment industry.

Maybe Google will take note and incorporate one of the ideas into the Project Glass final design. (Fingers...

Journalism Warning Labels: No Bad Reporter is Safe
Be afraid, business and science reporters. Be very afraid. Photo courtesy of Tom Scott. Tom Scott, an enterprising Brit who describes himself as a “geek comedian” and who “runs the British part of International Talk Like a Pirate Day,” has invented some funny things in his day: an exercise bike that dictates the speed of its user’s Internet connection, for one, and a gallery of smug kookaburras, for another. But we like these journalism warning labels (via Good Blog) best!
