Ethan Hawke wears many hats. The multi-hyphenate writer/director/actor returns to the Telluride Film Festival for a Tribute with Berlin prize-winner “Blue Moon” (SPC), in which he plays Broadway lyricist Lorenz Hart. And Hawke is debuting his new documentary “Highway 99: A Double Album,” a two-parter devoted to the life and music of Merle Haggard, which will likely sell to a streamer as it hits the festival circuit. And showing at the Toronto International Film Festival is a new series debuting on FX this September, Sterlin Harjo’s “The Lowdown.”
After all his recent efforts, Hawke, who has four Oscar nominations (three for collaborating with Richard Linklater), is ready to just talk. “I’m exhausted,” he said over breakfast in Telluride.
Hawke has always loved music, and has learned a lot over the years from playing trumpeter Chet Baker (“Born to Be Blue”) and directing the music movies “Blaze” and “Seymour: An Introduction.

Is it time for the “Hawke” to swoop in and nab his Oscar prey?
After four Academy Award nominations spanning both acting and writing, Ethan Hawke may have found the role that finally earns him an Oscar. In Richard Linklater’s “Blue Moon,” the actor delivers a searing performance as lyricist Lorenz Hart, one half of the legendary Broadway songwriting team Rodgers and Hart.
The film premiered in February at the Berlin International Film Festival, where Hawke’s co-star Andrew Scott won the Silver Bear for best supporting performance. “Blue Moon” has since screened at the Telluride Film Festival, where Hawke received one of the festival’s Silver Medallions — a distinction that has proven to be an Oscar bellwether.
Recent Silver Medallion recipients include eventual nominees Cate Blanchett for “Tár” (2022) and Adam Driver for “Marriage Story” (2019), along with eventual winners Anthony Hopkins for “The Father” (2020), Renée Zellweger for “Judy” (2019) and...

Steven Knight’s “Locke” (2013) is a one-character film about a man in crisis. On paper, it is quite uneventful. After all, it’s simply about a man driving from point A to point B while talking on his phone with a bunch of people. All we see is him inside his car. Yet, Steven Knight’s script offers an uncommon depth to his character through these conversations, providing plenty of psychoanalytical subtext to understand the root of his behavior. At its core, the film is about a man trying not to repeat the mistakes his estranged father made, only to dig himself into the same hole.

It’s looking to be a banner year for the Hungarian film industry at this year’s Venice Film Festival, with two of the country’s most celebrated directors — Oscar-winning “Son of Saul” filmmaker László Nemes and Berlin Golden Bear winner Ildikó Enyedi (“On Body and Soul”) — vying for the Golden Lion with their latest films.

Steven Knight may have "Peaky Blinders" and a handful of other beloved shows under his belt, but perhaps his most daring venture is a movie about a man in a car. Back in 2013, the writer/director paired up with Tom Hardy for "Locke," a one-person drama that is now considered one of the actor's best movies ever and holds a 91% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes. Heading down a very different kind of fury road, Hardy plays the titular Ivan Locke, the manager of a construction site that's on the verge of the largest concrete pour in Europe. Faced with the biggest day of his career, Locke suddenly finds his life is falling apart upon learning that a work colleague he had a brief affair with months ago became pregnant and is now going into labor.

Bella Ramsey’s performance in the second season of The Last of Us irked many hardcore fans of the game despite them receiving an Emmy nomination. Ramsey played Ellie in the HBO show based on the game by Naughty Dog Entertainment, and the latest season seemed to fall short of expectations, especially in Ellie’s treatment.
Several moments in Ramsey’s performance seemed to attract criticism from fans and critics alike. Scenes such as Ellie’s speech in the town council to hunt down Joel’s killer stand out as moments where they could have gone in a different direction. However, they have already proven their mettle in previous performances.
While Ramsey’s performance in The Last of Us might need some tweaking in the third season of the show, here are five other roles that prove their acting chops.

Richard Linklater's 'Blue Moon': Ethan Hawke and Margaret Qualley Transform in New Image [Exclusive]
Beloved director Richard Linklateris about to take the stage in just over two months with his comedic new film Blue Moon, a historical music biopic that puts an emphasis on the musical. Specifically, Rodgers and Hammerstein's legendary musical, Oklahoma!. However, this is not the story of either half of the theater writing dream team, but of Richard Rodgers's embittered former partner, Lorenz Hart, a lyricist who is firmly in the "for worse" part of “for better or for worse," and now has to bravely face the future amid his unraveling. Excitingly, the film also reunites Linklater with one of his favorite collaborators in the lead role — Ethan Hawke. As part of Collider's Exclusive Preview event for fall movies, we're excited to share an exclusive new image that sees Hawke transformed as Hart with a cigar in hand and looking sharp next to a dazzling Margaret Qualley.

Lena Dunham says her fixation on the “Scandoval” cheating scandal that rocked Vanderpump Rules pushed her to pitch a dramatic “mini-movie” of the reunion episode to Bravo host Andy Cohen during the 2023 writers strike, The Independent reports.
Appearing on the Shut Up Evan podcast, the writer-director recalled becoming “so obsessed” with the fallout that she treated the reality-tv transcript “like Shakespeare” and admits she “abused” Cohen’s phone number to lobby for the project. The strike hiatus, she argued, presented a window to “turn chaos into art” while most scripted sets were dark.
Dunham’s casting wish-list paired Andrew Scott with Jennifer Lawrence—Scott as the embattled bar owner Tom Sandoval and Lawrence as Ariana Madix, whose nine-year relationship collapsed when Sandoval’s affair with Rachel Leviss became public.
She imagined prestigious actors delivering the reunion’s expletive-laced dialogue “with all the passion and virtuosity of theatre,” according to Entertainment Weekly.

For Lena Dunham, there’s no such thing as “too much” reality TV. The beloved filmmaker even wanted to adapt the viral “Vanderpump Rules” for the big screen, especially after the “Scandoval” of it all.
“Vanderpump Rules” Season 10 revealed the explosive affair between co-stars Tom Sandoval and Rachel Leviss; Sandoval’s ex Ariana Madix confronted both cast members during the Season 10 reunion in 2023. The episode was Emmy-nominated.
While the scandal shocked audiences at the time, Dunham was looking to add a high(er)brow twist with the help of her fellow Bravo bingers, Andrew Scott and Jennifer Lawrence.
“We should basically create like a mini movie in which actors treat this as canon and get up and perform it with all the passion and virtuosity of Shakespeare,” Dunham said during the “Shut Up Evan” podcast. “I went so far as to abuse Andy Cohen‘s contact information to pitch him the idea.

Lena Dunham is sharing an idea she had for a project that never came to light.

Lena was a guest on Evan Ross Katz‘s Shut Up Evan podcast where she talked about her ideas for the movie.

Lena Dunham once pitched a “Scandoval” movie to Andy Cohen, with Andrew Scott and Jennifer Lawrence starring as Ariana Madix and Tom Sandoval from Vanderpump Rules. On the July 29 episode of the Shut Up Evan Podcast, the Girls star, 39, shared her wild idea with host Evan Ross Katz. Dunham recounted her affinity with reality TV during the SAG-AFTRA writers’ strike during their chat, explaining she was particularly fond of Vanderpump Rules. “I literally became so obsessed that I thought—what can we do while the writers’ strike is down?'” Dunham told Katz. “We should do a reenactment of the reunion in which Ariana confronts Tom and then takes Rachel/Raquel [Leviss] to town with trained actors.” The Too Much creator continued, “We should basically create like a mini movie in which actors treat this as canon and get up and perform with all the passion and virtuosity of Shakespeare.

Over the last thirty years, Richard Linklater and Ethan Hawke have cemented their status as one of cinema's all-time great director-star duos with their work on movies like the Before trilogy, Boyhood, Tape, and Waking Life. Their latest team-up, Blue Moon, finds Linklater and Hawke turning the clocks back to the evening of 31 March, 1943 for a historical chamber piece centred around feted lyricist Lorenz Hart (a bald-cap sporting Hawke) and the drama that unfolds at the afterparty of his former collaborator Richard Rodgers' (Andrew Scott) new show, Oklahoma! Check out the trailer below;
"We write together for a quarter of a century and the first show he writes with someone else is gonna be the biggest hit he ever had," bemoans Hawke's Hart to Bobby Cannavale's Sardi barman at the start of this slick first Blue Moon trailer.
