Peanuts' Welcome Home, Franklin Resolves 50-Year-Old Thanksgiving Special's Race Controversy
Image
Franklin's character is a symbol of progress since his introduction in the late '60s despite resistance. The new Peanuts special reimagines a Thanksgiving scene to emphasize unity and inclusivity. Craig Schulz and director Raymond S. Persi highlight the intention behind the revision for social impact.

Apple TV+'s latest offering in the Peanuts universe, Snoopy Presents: Welcome Home, Franklin, is stirring up debate on social media, and addressing a 50-year-old controversy about the much-loved A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving special that debuted in 1973. The new special shines a spotlight on Franklin Armstrong, a character celebrated for breaking racial barriers since his introduction into the comic strip in 1968.

The 1973 special has often been the subject of debate for a scene that depicted Franklin seated alone on one side of a dinner table, separated from the other characters, who sat grouped together on the opposite side. On the back of recent...

‘Welcome Home, Franklin’ Peanuts Special Addresses Controversial Scene From Thanksgiving Special
Image
Apple TV+ dropped a new Peanuts special titled Snoopy Presents: Welcome Home, Franklin, focusing on the comic strip’s first Black character, Franklin Armstrong.

When the trailer was unveiled, one moment got social media buzzing as it referenced the 1973 special A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. The controversial scene is where Franklin is seen sitting on one side of the dinner table while the rest sit on the opposite side.

‘Welcome Home, Franklin’

The new special, which is already streaming on Apple TV+, fixes that scene showing all the Peanuts characters rallying around Franklin.

Craig Schulz, son of Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz, recently addressed the controversy in an interview, revealing that his son Bryan told him about the issue with the scene.

“It was very important to my son Bryan,” Schulz told The Daily Beast. “He said, ‘This is our chance to kind of rectify the whole thing.’”

Snoopy Presents: Welcome Home, Franklin Review
Image
There’s an adorable moment in Snoopy Presents: Welcome Home, Franklin when Franklin asks Charlie Brown a question. The two are chatting like any two young kids would when Franklin expresses his appreciation for the music of Stevie Wonder, Little Richard, and James Brown. He turns to our beloved Chuck and asks, “Are you related?”

It’s one of many charming moments in Apple TV+’s new animated Peanuts special and holds a deeper layer of substance. You see, Franklin is trying to fit in after moving to a new town where he first meets the classic characters created by Charles M. Schulz. This is a sweet, heartwarming origin story for one of Peanuts’ most beloved characters. Narrated by the boy himself, it begins with spark before immediately flashing back to track Franklin in his attempts to make new friends. As a military kid always on the move, that can be challenging,...

‘Snoopy Presents: Welcome Home, Franklin’ Team Discusses Iconic Kid’s Evolution (Video)
Image
Shortly after the April 4, 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., a California school teacher named Harriet Glickman sent a letter to Peanuts creator Charles. M. Schulz. In it, she asked him to introduce a Black character to Charlie Brown’s world, in hopes of helping ease the racial tensions roiling the country at the time. While Schulz admitted it was a great idea, his original response was one of concern that such a move might appear condescending. Nevertheless, Glickman persisted and today we have Franklin Armstrong, who is finally getting his origin story explored in Apple TV+‘s Snoopy Presents: Welcome Home, Franklin. “The flack [my dad] got from that was tremendous,” recalls Craig Schulz of the character’s debut on July 31, 1968. “A lot of backlash, a lot of nasty letters, editors threatening to pull the comic strip from their newspapers and so forth… For him, it had been quite the dilemma...

The New Peanuts Movie Has The Perfect Angle To Bring Charlie Brown To A New Generation
Image
There are three types of people in the world: "Garfield" people, "Calvin and Hobbes" people, and "Peanuts" people. As a practicing worshipper of The Great Pumpkin and the human result of what happens when Lucy van Pelt and Peppermint Patty go through the Brundlefly machine, I am firmly in the latter camp. There's no such thing as a bad "Peanuts" movie, in my opinion, only films that are special to a smaller number of fans.

The characters created by Charles M. Schulz have been entertaining generations for over 75 years, and there's no sign of stopping. Apple won the rights to much of the "Peanuts" library in the streaming wars, releasing the hybrid "Peanuts" special/Schulz documentary "Who Are You, Charlie Brown?" as well as two series, "Snoopy in Space" and "The Snoopy Show." Now, Apple TV+ is developing its first "Peanuts" original feature, bringing Charlie Brown and the gang to the Big City.

Craig Schulz, son of the creator of Peanuts, is hopeful for a new Peanuts movie and confirms that "nothing is off the table." The success of The Peanuts Movie in 2015 and the current popularity of Peanuts content on Apple TV+ make now the perfect time for another big-screen outing. One of the biggest factors to consider for a new movie is which animation house Schulz and his team will turn to, with hopes that they find a studio as inventive as Blue Sky Studios after it was shut down by Disney.

With nearly a decade gone since the iconic comic strip made its way to the big screen, Craig Schulz offers a hopeful response to the chances of a new Peanuts movie. After four movies produced in the late '60s and '70s, the franchise came back with The Peanuts Movie in 2015, which saw Charlie Brown trying to win...

Peanuts Producer Talks Potentially Revisiting Charlie Brown's Holiday Specials
Image
Peanuts producer Craig Schulz, son of creator Charles Schulz, says there have been discussions about potentially creating new Charlie Brown specials centered on Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

Speaking to ComicBook, Shultz noted that the existing specials focusing on these holidays are revered, which presents a few challenges. "In all those cases, it's led to extensive conversations between myself, my son, our group here in Santa Rosa, which consists of over 20 people, and what we think is right or wrong," Schulz explained. "And we have had ideas for a [Charlie Brown] Christmas special, but the three biggies - Christmas, Pumpkin, and Thanksgiving - are so sacrosanct, we just won't touch anything near that.

Instead, the Peanuts team found ways to explore the fringes of these holidays to create new adventures. "We weren't afraid to go on the edges, so we thought about that," Shultz continued.

The holidays may have come to a close but watching A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and A Charlie Brown Christmas are a big part of many people’s holidays. Based on the comics by Charles M. Schulz, Peanuts is one of the most successful comic strips to date.

It’s been 23 years since the last comic strip was released (due to Schulz’s death) but the strip is just as popular as ever. With shorts, a computer-animated movie, and merchandise, Peanuts isn't going anywhere anytime soon. As popular as the strip and its characters are, however, there’s plenty that people don’t know about this iconic comic.

Charlie Brown And Schulz Were One And The Same

Known as a “lovable loser,” Charlie Brown was mature for his age and down on his luck. His bad luck made Peanuts one of the bleakest comic strips. Whether it was the trees eating...

It’s time to celebrate the Earth, Charlie Brown!
