A familiar and trusted broadcast presence in New York City over the last 50 years has signed off the air for the final time: Chuck Scarborough, who has anchored or coanchored Wnbc TV since Nixon was in office, America was in Vietnam and the city itself was teetering on economic failure, surprised many viewers Thursday when he announced on air that he had just delivered his final newscast.

While Scarborough, 81, hadn’t exactly kept his semi-retirement plans a secret in recent weeks, the goodbye no doubt came as unwelcome news to many loyal and longtime viewers.

“From one Chuck to another,” tweeted New York Sen. Chuck Schumer, “Best wishes on your next chapter, Chuck. You didn’t just tell us the news, you made NYers feel at home and for that we thank you.”

After more than five decades in television, Wnbc-tv’s lead news anchor Chuck Scarborough is ready to retire.

On Thursday, Wnbc (Channel 4) in New York said its news anchor of 50 years will be stepping away from the news desk next month, though he intends to make occasional contributions to news specials and other local programming.

“There is only one word: gratitude,” said Scarborough. “Our Wnbc viewers welcomed me into their homes for more than 50 years, trusting me to present the news free of any agenda, faithful to the fundamental principles of accuracy, objectivity and fairness—and to bring them vital, timely information during our darkest and brightest hours. That has been an extraordinary honor.”

Scarborough began his TV career at Boston’s now-defunct Wnac in 1972. He joined Wnbc in early 1974, serving as the 5 p.m. anchor of “NewsCenter 4” and moving into the role of lead anchor for the 6 p.

Richard Leibner, a pioneering talent agent who represented such notable broadcast news journalists as Dan Rather, Diane Sawyer, Mike Wallace, Andy Rooney, Norah O’Donnell, Ed Bradley, Morley Safer and Fareed Zakaria, died today at his home in New York City. He was 85.

His death was announced by UTA vice chairman Jay Sures in a memo to staffers obtained by Deadline.

Leibner began his agency career in the 1960s as co-founder, with Nate Bienstock, of the New York-based firm N.S. Bienstock, which was acquired by UTA in 2014. Leibner retired in 2021.

Richard Leibner, the prominent talent agent who transformed the TV news business by guiding the careers of such renowned broadcast journalists as Dan Rather, Diane Sawyer, Mike Wallace, Andy Rooney and Norah O’Donnell, has died. He was 85.

Leibner died Tuesday at his home in New York, UTA vice chairman Jay Sures announced. The agent started out in the 1960s at New York-based N.S. Bienstock, which was acquired in 2014 by UTA.

Leibner also signed and represented the likes of Morley Safer, Ed Bradley, Bob Simon, Steve Kroft, Bill Whitaker, Chuck Scarborough, Paula Zahn, Brian Stelter, Daniel Schorr and Fareed Zakaria before he retired in December 2021 after 58 years in the business.

Today on Monday morning commemorated Al Roker’s 45th year as a member of the NBC family, by offering up some sweet words for “the beating heart of this show” and cuing up a throwback video that involved… penguins?

Roker’s career with NBC began in 1978 at Wkyc in Cleveland, which at the time was an NBC owned-and-operated station. In late 1983, he was named the regular weeknight weathercaster at Wnbc-tv in New York, replacing 27-year veteran Dr. Frank Field. From 1990 to ’95, Roker filled in for Willard Scott on Today, and come early 1996, upon Scott’s announced retirement, Roker received the regular weekday weatherman slot.

On Wednesday, November 11th, the country’s leading non-profit dedicated to advanced depression research, Hope for Depression Research Foundation (Hdrf), held its 14th annual Hope luncheon seminar, virtually.

This year’s event honored CBS Sunday Morning host Jane Pauley, and actress and entrepreneur Taraji P. Henson, who have both urged for more open national discussion about mental health. The seminar focused on “The Value of Talk Therapy, Especially Now” and addressed the staggering mental health impact of the global pandemic. It drew over 150 guests and raised $650,000 for life-saving research.

As the guests settled onto the Zoom platform, Master of Ceremonies, Chuck Scarborough began the event by stating that 100-million Americans have symptoms of clinical anxiety or depression in the wake of the pandemic, according to a recent Census Bureau survey. He pointed to the need for solutions and stated, “This year’s survey results are not a new problem, but a deepening of existing trends.

The country’s leading non-profit dedicated to advanced depression research, Hope for Depression Research Foundation (Hdrf), has announced the honorees for the 14th Annual Hope luncheon ceremony taking place virtually on Wednesday, November 11, at 12 p.m.

David Ushery, a veteran of Wnbc who has worked as an anchor on the station’s news programs for years, has been given a new role – co-anchoring at 4 p.m. and the economically critical 11 p.m. newscast.

He replaces Stefan Holt, who is returning to Wmaq, the company’s owned-and-operated affiliate in Chicago. Ushery will join Natalie Pasquarella, who has been co-anchoring at 11 p.m. since 2016.

“David is a talented, experienced journalist who takes a thoughtful approach to every story he covers. As an anchor, he’s an incredible newsroom leader who cares about the entire team,” said Amy Morris, vice president of news for NBC 4 New York, in a prepared statement. “I’m delighted that David is taking on this new role.” Ushery had previously been stationed as a co-anchor at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Martin Bregman, the New York-based producer of such films as Sea of Love, Scarface, Serpico and Carlito’s Way, died Saturday at age 92. His passing was first reported by local New York TV news station Wnbc. His passing was attributed to cerebral hemorrhage, his widow, Cornelia, told News 4’s Chuck Scarborough.

Michael Bregman, a producer with his father on The Bone Collector, Carlito’s Way and several other films, told Deadline his father died after being rushed to Weill Cornell Presbyterian Hospital on East 68th Street early Saturday morning. “It was surprising and surreal; my sister reached me at 1 Am and said come quickly, there’s not much time,” Michael Bregman told Deadline. “We were by his side when he passed at 5:45 Pm Saturday.

On Tuesday night's edition of Current TV's Joy Behar: Say Anything, residents of the New York area were treated to an interview with former Wnbc-4 anchor Sue Simmons, her first since leaving the local channel in June, after a 32-year stint alongside Chuck Scarborough at 11pm, and a 27-year run on Live At Five with the likes of current CNN crank Jack Cafferty. Displaying the kind of loose wit that characterized her career, Simmons joked that her replacement, 37 year-old Shiba Russell, is "an old 37."...

Despite multiple social media campaigns to salvage her post at Wnbc, veteran news anchor Sue Simmons is on track to exit the station on Friday, June 15th.

Simmons' final newscast will air during the 11pm slot opposite co-anchor Chuck Scarborough, ending the 32 year run of New York's longest running anchor team.

The 69-year old's firing back in March sparked heavy backlash from Simmons' loyal fans and even a #SaveSueSimmons hashtag, Facebook group, and Tumblr account devoted to keeping the longtime anchor on air.

Despite the heartfelt attempts, however, not everyone's sad to see her go. The New York Post reported on disgruntled Wnbc employees who have come to resent Simmons for her whopping $5 million a year salary and alleged bad attitude.

Simmons' history of on-air gaffes, most notably her infamous "What the f**k" faux pas, and admittance to boozing on the job probably hasn't helped save her career either.

Local news anchor and Wnbc veteran Sue Simmons has been given the axe by television executives after an epic 32 years on air.

The New York Post delivers the sad news that Simmons' contract will be up in June, ending the longest-running anchor team that is the legendary Sue Simmons and co-anchor Chuck Scarborough duo.

Scarborough will remain for at least three more years.

Simmons began her career at Channel 4 in 1980 and as is the highest paid anchorwoman for local stations in the country.

Her more than three decades of airtime saw some classic television moments, most notably and hilariously including her F-Bomb wielding remark to Scarborough in 2008.

Director George Nolfi talks The Adjustment Bureau, showing a different side to New York City, making this Philip K. Dick story his directorial debut, and more.

Like most screenwriters, George Nolfi had always wanted to direct. He wrote four movies - Timeline, Ocean's Twelve, The Sentinel, and The Bourne Ultimatum - before getting his shot at the helm. Unlike most directors, George Nolfi landed an extremely ambitious project for his directing debut in The Adjustment Bureau, which will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on June 21.

New York's local affiliate is dealing with a lot these days - taking breaks from non-stop Olympic coverage and trying to keep the Tri-state region abreast of the deadly snowfall. A local anchor's recent F-bomb on live TV hasn't seemed to hurt her career.

WNBC's Sue Simmons caused a stir earlier this month when she swore during a live promo for the station's 11 p.m. newscast. She apologized for the remark during the 11 p.m. newscast and then again in a statement. The controversy didn't stop the NBC O&O from giving Simmons the choice 6 p.m. newscast duties with co-anchor Chuck Scarborough.

Simmons and Scarborough have been a three-decade tradition on the New York airwaves. The two already co-anchor the 11 p.m. newscast, while Simmons co-anchors the 5 p.m. newscast and Scarborough is the 7 p.m. "New York Nightly News" anchor.

The changes are effective Monday.

A longtime New York TV anchor apologized to viewers Monday night after swearing during a live news promo on the NBC owned-and-operated station.

Sue Simmons, who has been working at WNBC since 1980, uttered the expletive during a news tease at about 10:25 p.m. She had been doing a tease about the cost of groceries when, off camera, she yelled, "What the f*** are you doing?"

Simmons and her on-air partner, Chuck Scarborough, didn't immediately address the issue in the 11 p.m. newscast, but Simmons later apologized.

"We need to acknowledge an unfortunate mistake that I made in one of the teases we bring to you before this program," Simmons said during the newscast. "While we were live just after 10 o'clock, I said a word that many people find offensive. I am truly sorry. It was a mistake on my part, and I sincerely apologize."

The target of and reason for the expletive was unclear.

WNBC received about 100 calls in the half-hour, some to complain, some to call attention to what happened and some who didn't mind.
