Ken Loach, Riz Ahmed, Mike Leigh and More Sign Open Letter in Support of Pulled BBC Gaza Documentary: It’s ‘Politically Motivated Censorship’
Image
Update: In the wake of the BBC acknowledging “serious flaws” in the production of its controversial documentary “Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone” and initiating a further review, Artists for Palestine UK, which had published a letter condemning the broadcaster’s decision to remove the film, have issued a statement.

Artists for Palestine UK said: “We are appalled that the BBC has chosen to give credence to a politicized campaign that sought to discredit a documentary about children’s experiences of unspeakable Israeli military violence, because one child’s father was deputy agriculture minister in Gaza. This disgraceful decision comes despite nearly 900 media figures having warned the BBC of the dangers of such an approach.

“Reports over the last week have detailed Israel’s detention and torture of hundreds of Gaza’s medical workers. The world has seen images of traumatized and emaciated Palestinian captives emerging from Israeli jails, some with limbs amputated.

Venice Filmmakers Sign Open Letter Protesting “Complicit” Israeli Films in Festival
Image
Around 300 filmmakers have signed an open letter opposing two Israeli films set to screen at the Venice Film Festival.

The protest by filmmakers and artists amid the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict is aimed at Dani Rosenberg’s Hebrew-language film Al Klavim Veanashim (Of Dogs and Men), which is set against the backdrop of the Oct. 7 terror attacks in southern Israel, and Amos Gitai’s Why War. The latter stars Irène Jacob, Mathieu Amalric, Micha Lescot and Jérôme Kircher and is set for a world premiere on Aug. 31 out of competition.

“Of Dogs and Men, shot in the midst of Israel’s ongoing attacks on Gaza, whitewashes the genocide. Like Of Dogs and Men, Why War was created by complicit Israeli production companies that contribute to apartheid, occupation and now genocide through their silence or active participation in artwashing,” the letter, published by Artists for Palestine Italia, states.

The artists are represented...

The Big Bang Theory’s Kunal Nayyar will star in Gurinder Chadha’s next film, Christmas Karma. It’s due out this December.

News has emerged about Gurinder Chadha’s next project, confirmed to be an adaptation of A Christmas Carol.

Titled Christmas Karma, the film will star Kunal Nayyar as Scrooge. He’ll be joined by an ensemble cast that includes Eva Longoria, Boy George, Billy Porter, Hugh Bonneville, Leo Suter, Charithra Chandran, Pixie Lott, Danny Dyer, Bilal Hasna, Allan Corduner, Tracy-Ann Oberman, Rufus Jones, Eve, and Nitin Ganatra.

We can’t say we expected to see Danny Dyer, Boy George and Billy Porter in the same film, but there we are. We also reported earlier this year that the film’s Scrooge would be an “Indian Tory who hates refugees”.

Christmas Karma will also be a Bollywood-style musical; Gary Barlow is in charge of music alongside Shaznay Lewis and Nitin Sawhney.

Leffest Lisboa Film Festival Prizes: Victor Erice’s ‘Close Your Eyes’ Wins Best Film
Image
Victor Erice’s “Close Your Eyes” won best film at the 17th edition of Leffest Lisboa Film Festival, which announced awards Saturday night.

Marking Erice’s first feature film since his 1992 docudrama “The Quince Tree Sun” and garnering almost universal positive reviews – Variety called it “an aching ode to film, time and memory” – following its world premiere at Cannes, “Close Your Eyes” has screened at Toronto, Busan, BFI London and New York.

During Leffest, in a session moderated by Paulo Branco, 83-year old Erice took part in a conversation with preeminent 64-year old Portuguese helmer, Pedro Costa, whose short “The Daughters of Fire,” was a Cannes Special Screening and also had its Portuguese premiere at the fest.

Erice remarked during the event, one fest highlight, that both he and Costa are working in the shadow of two great filmmakers – “Don Luis Buñuel” and “Don Manoel de Oliveira” – and he added...

(Ians Review) 'What's Love Got to Do With It?' Bollywood Twist to a British Romcom (Ians Rating: ***)
Image
Director: Shekhar Kapur.

Cast: Lily James, Shazad Latif, Emma Thompson, Shabana Azmi, Sajal Aly and Jeff Mirza

Cinematography: Remi Adefarasin. Music: Nitin Sawhney.

Ians Rating: ***

Many Asians continue to embrace arranged marriages in the sub-continent. Even in the UK, modern arranged marriages involve a variety of matchmaking practices where each family tailors its own version to suit modern identities and ambitions.

For the sizeable migrant population comprising Indians and Pakistanis, it may not be a homogeneous tradition, though by and large it remains the preferred choice.

At the heart of the story is an enterprising London-based filmmaker Zoe (Lily James), who proposes to make a documentary about Muslims and their obsession with arranged marriages. "Or assisted marriages," as her neighbour and friend Kazim (Shahzad Latif) explains.

The Khans (Azmi and Jeff Mirza) are not just next-door neighbours; they are best friends too. Zoe barges into Kazim’s place unannounced and...

Unforgotten’s Sanjeev Bhaskar: ‘Rishi Sunak as prime minister reveals latent racism in people – like my show Goodness Gracious Me did’
Image
Since that finale, Unforgotten star Sanjeev Bhaskar has been bombarded with questions. “A lot of people on Twitter were saying to me, ‘Why did she have to die?’, ‘Why couldn’t she have just retired and lived with her boyfriend?’” He is talking, of course, about Dci Cassie Stuart – his indomitable sidekick in the cop drama, played by Nicola Walker, who was killed off in the fourth season’s final episode.

The pair were a detective duo with a special spark, the beating heart of the show since it first aired on ITV in 2015. For many, the idea of the series without Cassie and Bhaskar’s Di Sunil “Sunny” Khan is unthinkable. The shock twist left fans in tears – she never recovered from a car accident. But now the hit police procedural returns for a fifth series, and Sunny has – sniff – a brand new partner. How did Bhaskar take the...

Lily James, Shazad Latif & many more on cross-cultural rom-com What’s Love Got to do With It?
Jemima Khan
Sometimes, there’s little better than settling down to watch a good old-fashioned romantic comedy. A will they, won’t they, where you know they will, but believe that maybe they won’t. Step forward What’s Love Got to do With It?, penned by Jemima Khan, with romantic leads Lily James & Shazad Latif bringing the story and characters to life, in this cross-cultural tale.

We had the pleasure of taking part in a mega-junket for the film as we spoke to James and Latif about their in-build bond they have from years of friendship, and how that benefits the finished product, while we also discuss the creation of this story with screenwriter Khan, as well as the venerable director Shekhar Kapur. We also have a funny chat with Asim Chaudhry and Jeff Mirza as they talk us through their inspirations, and, well, dogging, while finally we speak to the...

Image
Studiocanal and Working Title have unveiled the official trailer for Shekhar Kapur’s keenly anticipated cross-cultural British romantic comedy “What’s Love Got to Do with It?”

The film will have its world premiere as a gala presentation at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 10.

For Zoe’s childhood friend and neighbor Kaz (Shazad Latif), the answer is to follow his parents’ example and opt for an arranged (or “assisted”) marriage to Maymouna (Sajal Aly), a bright and beautiful bride from Pakistan. ‘Mowgli,’ ‘Buster Scruggs’ and Beyond: Streaming Cinema Is Enlisting A-List Composers
The debate rages on over whether a Netflix movie is legitimate, bona fide cinema, as the streaming behemoth has somewhat reluctantly joined Amazon Studios in giving its award-hungry offerings at least a limited theatrical run. But good old-fashioned talent makes contrasting the streamers with their Old Hollywood rivals a moot point. And, along with star-studded casts and esteemed directors, many of this season’s Netflix and Amazon original films were soundtracked by prestige composers.

“Roma” had no original music, but Netflix scored a coup with “The Other Side of the Wind,” the belatedly released Orson Welles film that features a new score by three-time Oscar winner Michel Legrand. Meanwhile, Amazon nabbed not one but two Radiohead members for its original features this year: Jonny Greenwood for “You Were Never Really Here” and Thom Yorke for “Suspiria.”

Netflix’s “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” is the latest in a 35-year collaboration...

Composer Nitin Sawhney makes it clear that Andy Serkis‘s “Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle” is not to be confused with Disney’s kid-friendly musical version of “The Jungle Book.” “This is about Andy going back to the original source material,” he explains, “and really finding a world that is about Andy’s vision of this and interpretation of it.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Sawhney above.

See Will Amy Adams and Christian Bale (‘Vice’) be each other’s Oscar good luck charm for the 3rd time in a row?

Based on the novel by Rudyard Kipling, this Netflix release centers on Mowgli (Rohan Chand), a human child raised in the wild by wolves. In addition to directing, Serkis also plays Mowgli’s bear friend Baloo, and the cast also includes Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Benedict Cumberbatch, Naomi Harris, Matthew Rhys and Freida Pinto.

Kendrick Lamar Invited to Join Movie Academy
Kendrick Lamar
Forty-four were invited to join the music branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, including Kendrick Lamar, whose contributions to the “Black Panther” soundtrack are riding high on the album charts; songwriter Melissa Etheridge, who won an Oscar for her song for “An Inconvenient Truth”; and recent Oscar nominees Dustin O’Halloran and Hauschka (“Lion”), Sufjan Stevens (“Call Me By Your Name”), Carlinhos Brown (“Rio”) and Benoit Charest (“The Triplets of Belleville”).

Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman, whose work with Prince catapulted them into the limelight and who have gone on to do films (“Dangerous Minds”) and considerable television, were also invited, as were composers Jeff Beal, Fil Eisler and Sharon Farber, whose best-known feature-film credits are in the documentary arena.

Classical composers Osvaldo Golijov and Joanna Bruzdowicz are on the list, as are other composers from England and the Continent: Daniel Pemberton (“Steve Jobs”), Eric Serra (“The Fifth Element...

From the creator of Gollum (Lotr series) and Caesar (Planet Of The Paes) comes a new telling of the story of Mowgli. See Andy Serkis and an incredible cast bring the jungle to new life October 19, 2018 in theaters.

Motion capture and live action are blended for Mowgli, a new, big screen, 3D adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s classic The Jungle Book.

Walt Disney Studios released the animated musical classic in 1967 and a retelling of it with a live version in 2016.

This version follows the upbringing of the human child Mowgli, raised by a wolf pack in the jungles of India. As he learns the often harsh rules of the jungle, under the tutelage of a bear named Baloo and a panther named Bagheera, Mowgli becomes accepted by the animals of the jungle as one of their own. All but...

Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy in Breathe (2017)
‘Breathe’ Composer Nitin Sawhney On The Pitfall Of Musical Sentimentality & Two Andy Serkis Collaborations
Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy in Breathe (2017)
Working on longtime friend Andy Serkis’ The Jungle Book long before Breathe came to be, composer Nitin Sawhney ended up seeing that true-life drama hit theaters first. Based on the true story of producer Jonathan Cavendish’s parents, Robin and Diana, the film sees Robin (Andrew Garfield) struck down by polio in his late twenties, leaving him and his wife (Claire Foy) to manage his condition for the rest of his life. Registering the trauma of such an abrupt illness, Breathe…...

“Breathe” aims to return Andrew Garfield to Oscar contention
After being snubbed for his performance in The Social Network, Andrew Garfield took a detour from the awards season for a while. Part of that was his turn as Spider-Man, to be sure, though overall he just wasn’t making Academy friendly fare. Then, last year found him in contention for a pair of prestige titles, with Hacksaw Ridge and Silence. The former got Garfield his first nomination, while the latter expanded his range. This week, Breathe opens and hopes to propel Garfield back into the Best Actor field. All of the ingredients are there, so it’s definitely possible that we’re entering a period of time where Garfield will consistently be in the Oscar hunt. The film is a biopic of Robin Cavendish (Garfield) and Diana Cavendish (Claire Foy), a couple that defied the odds in truly spectacular fashion. When Robin is diagnosed with polio and loses the...

May Classical Review Roundup
Hélene Grimaud Water: Berio: Wasserklavier: Sawhney: Water: Transitions 1-7; Takemitsu: Rain Tree Sketch No. 2; Fauré: Barcarolle No. 5; Ravel: Jeux d'eau; Albéniz: Almeria; Liszt: Les Jeux d'eaux a la Villa d'Este; Janáček: In the Mist: No. 1; Debussy: La Cathedrale engloutie (Deutsche Grammophon) Classical purists be warned: almost half the tracks here are not the solo piano recital you might expect from the billing. Instead, Grimaud had composer Nitin Sawhney create electronic bridging miniatures (ranging from 0:56 to 1:41) fitted between the solo piano tracks. This works wonderfully well, changing this album from a traditional presentation into a moody soundscape (though the purist crowd was quick to take offense, witness the extremely snarky review on classicstoday.com). Of course, Grimaud is her usual scintillating self on the solo piano pieces. The pieces she has chosen for this thematic program are in a couple of cases "usual suspects" -- the Ravel and Debussy...

Celebrating Asian success across all walks of life, the event saw the best of stage, screen, sport, music and industry, converge on the lavish setting of the Grosvenor House Hotel, for a night of highly merited back-slapping and champagne-swilling.

Of course, all eyes were on the two star attractions whose rise to fame has been nothing less than stratospheric. Why movie scores sound better live
Film scores aren't just for playing in the background any more. Ivan looks at how they're taking centre stage...

Feature

Film soundtracks have always been a strange medium. The music relies on movies for their full meaning. They're so integral to a film and its mood that to listen to them away from the big screen can seem strange to many. Others, meanwhile, take the chance outside of the cinema to pore over them in detail, or use them for background music while running or working (How to Train Your Dragon's on now, if you're wondering). It's only in recent years that another way of listening to them has become popular again: with your eyes.

Do a quick Google for "film with live score" and you'll discover a whole heap of events currently happening around the UK in which orchestras accompany a screening. Why the sudden trend? Is it...

“Traces of You” – an uplifting soundscape by Anoushka Shankar
Anoushka Shankar’s seventh album, Traces of You, marks a significant step along her pathway as a musician and woman. With the aim of bringing together a variety of cultural experiences and attitudes as organically as possible, she worked with London-based British-Indian producer Nitin Sawhney, particularly noted for fusing Eastern influences with electronica and, more generally, a non-didactic interweaving of Western and Eastern soundscapes for which London, Anoushka’s home and place of birth, provides the optimal environs.

Traces of You was initially a solely musical exploration inspired by the idea that everything in the universe leaves an indelible mark, or a subtle “trace”, on everything else it comes into contact with, and Anoushka drew on her relationships and multicultural lifestyle to trace a journey of love, change and loss. As it happened, life itself would leave traces on the album’s production. Having lost her father, legendary sitar player Ravi Shankar,...

Music in Film: top 12 movie soundtracks of 2012
Odd List Ivan Radford Jan 3, 2013

As 2012 recedes into history, Ivan counts down his pick of the year's finest movie soundtracks...

While Den of Geek writers were busy voting for the top film of the year, I’ve been rifling through my collection of albums from the last 12 months to work out which film soundtrack was the best. The conclusion? It’s been one heck of a year. (Please excuse the long list of Honourable Mentions at the end…)

These are the best movie soundtracks of 2012. Probably.

1. The Master (Jonny Greenwood)

A quick rewatch of the trailer to Paul Thomas Anderson’s film reminds you of the power of Jonny Greenwood’s music. The Master is surpassed by its haunting score, which nails the psychological state of Joaquin Phoenix’s Able-Bodied Seamen, increasingly dominated by His Master’s Voice. It may not be as lyrical as Greenwood’s Norwegian Wood soundtrack,...

The winner is … the Olympics, though Ted held up well for a stoned CGI bear
Hard for cinema to compete with Mo Farah and Tom Daley on a sunny Saturday, and Step Up 4: Miami Heat came a cropper

The winner #1: Olympics

The Olympics closing ceremony may have surpassed the more creatively adventurous opening in the UK TV ratings, at least going by viewer averages (23.2m v 23.0m) rather than peak viewers, but it doesn't seem to have impacted the box office more than the event has in general. Sunday takings for top film Ted were only marginally behind Friday, and were ahead on Sunday in the case of runnerup title The Dark Knight Rises. For family films such as Brave, Ice Age 4: Continental Drift and Dr Seuss' The Lorax, which are not reliant on late-evening showtimes, Sunday offered the best of the three days' takings. Overall, the Olympics almost certainly negatively impacted all films in the market, with Saturday evening offering the...

The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog – review
In conversation with François Truffaut in the 1960s, the Master called his 1927 thriller "the first true Hitchcock movie", and it's being rereleased in a carefully restored version as part of the BFI Southbank's extended Hitchcock celebrations. The matinee idol Ivor Novello plays the eponymous lodger, who rents a room with a working-class London family. Their blond daughter is being courted by a Scotland Yard detective, and he becomes a suspect in the hunt for "the Avenger", a serial killer specialising in murdering fair-haired women.

The movie is very much in the German expressionist manner and contains the seeds of Hitch's subsequent work (the fascination with technique and problem-solving, the obsession with blondes, the fear of authority, the ambivalence towards homosexuality) and there's a brief personal appearance, though such traits were not to be obligatory until after Rebecca. The producers found the film baffling and it took Ivor Montagu, the Observer's movie critic,...
