Stanley Kubrick was a deep admirer of Carlos Saura, and particularly loved Peppermint Frappé (1967), Cría cuervos... (1976) and Noces de sang (1981). Kubrick also asked Saura to direct the Spanish dubbings of Orange mécanique (1971), Barry Lyndon (1975) and Shining (1980). This dubbings hadn't good acceptance among the audience, especially the dubbing of Shining (1980), which nowadays remains considered one of the worst Spanish dubbings. Ironically, Saura was an ardent detractor of dubbing, even a supporter of totally banning it.

Was the favorite movie director of Luis Buñuel (also listed).

Has had long time relationship with actress Geraldine Chaplin. Their son Shane Saura Chaplin was born late 1974.

Died one day before he was due to be awarded an honorary Goya (the Spanish equivalent of an Oscar) for lifetime achievement.
