Image
Ananth Mahadevan’s biopic Phule, based on the life of Jyotirao Phule and his wife Savitri which was to release this Friday, has been pushed ahead to the end of the month, to April 25th. Confirming this change of plan, the producer Ritesh Kudecha says, “Yes, the film has been postponed to 25 April. We took the decision this morning.”

All eyes are now on the Sunny Deol starrer Jaat and Gippy Grewal’s Akaal: The Unconquered, both of which open on Thursday, April 7.

For Gippy Garewal’s Akaal, Karan Johar ties up with Gippy to co-produce an action epic which stresses valour and nationalism. While the film is bound to whip up rage in Punjab, it has a certain zest and energy to it, which will make it appealing to audiences outside Punjab. Gippy has not so far conquered the territory outside Punjab. With Akaal, he will.

As for Sunny Deol’s Southern sojourn,...

Image
South Indian Actresses Who Dominated Female-Centric Films (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Gone are the days when heroines were limited to glamorous roles. Many actresses have proven their talent with strong performances in female-centric films, earning both critical acclaim and impressive box-office success. In some cases, their films even outperformed those of star heroes. Here are some of the most remarkable performances by South Indian actresses.

Nayanthara

Nayanthara has always been at the forefront of bringing female-centric stories to the limelight, which is why she is called the Lady Superstar. Her role in Aramm (2017) as a district collector addressing a village crisis brought her widespread recognition. In Maya (2015), she played a single mother entangled in supernatural events. Her performances in films like Kolamavu Kokila (2018) and Netrikann (2021) further proved her ability to carry films on her shoulders.

Image
Rekha’s Father Gemini Ganesan Once Talked About Her Alleged Affair With Amitabh Bachchan! (Photo Credit – Koimoi/Wikipedia)

Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha are two names that have been etched together forever. The two superstars who made one of the best on-screen couples of Hindi Cinema were more talked about because of their off-screen chemistry and alleged history that none ever confirmed or denied publicly, and few of their close ones confirmed in murmurs and nods!

Neither of their families ever talked about the alleged closeness that was termed an affair by the gossip mills. However, it was once that the Umrao Jaan actress’s father and renowned South Indian superstar Gemini Ganesan opened up on the rumor.

In a very old interview with Star & Style magazine, Ganesan talked about his daughter Rekha’s alleged link-up and said, “People tell me that Rekha has messed up her personal life by getting involved with Amitabh.

Revisiting Raaz As It Completes 23 Years
Image
Raaz is pretty much an original spook story, told with terrific elan and a high-velocity suspense that tears across the screen with a bloodcurdling scream. Vikram Bhatt is no stranger to thrillers. His very first film, Fareb, was a thriller of shocks.

Bhatt’s previous film (inspired by What Lies Beneath) was a far less in-your-face suspense thriller than Raaz. Everything this time around is more sensuous, tactile, thrilling, throbbing with terror and anxiety. Bhatt builds a field of foreboding through age-old gimmicks associated with the horror genre. Doors creak and open ominously, screams rent the air with piercing suddenness, and a fog envelopes the studiously silent landscape in Ooty to convey the terror within.

Cinematographer Pravin (the director’s father) captures the inner and outer landscape in shades of ebony evil. As is the tradition in horror-suspense films, most of Raaz is shot in the dark. Pravin Bhatt makes...

“When Nagi (director Nag Ashwin) narrated the story, I refused to take up the project,” she admitted. “The producers were thrilled at the idea of me playing Savitri amma, but I was terrified. I thought, ‘What if I ruin it? What if people say I destroyed the legacy of such a legend?’ The fear of failing overshadowed everything else. Swapna and Priyanka (the producers) were shocked by my decision,...

Is Meenakshi Chaudhary’s New Apartment A Hole In The Producers’ Pockets?
Image
Is Meenakshi Chaudhary’s new apartment a major loss for producers? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Actresses and their importance in Tfi are as good as props in the scene; they exist in the film, but are they creating an impact on the audience and bringing audiences to theatres for being eye candy and dancing divas? Yes, but do they have a memorable role? Not.

The recall value of heroines is scarce compared to the superstars they work opposite. We rarely remember actresses like Sridevi, Soundarya, Savitri, Ramya Krishnan, and now probably Anushka Shetty’s roles as being impactful.

Producers provide and pay for the artists’ accommodation, food, and other expenses, which are already known. But many are now taking this as an advantage. These actors ask only for five-star hotels, and it is said that they do not cooperate or are open to any adjustments.

The Decline of Integrity in National Film Awards: Politics, Controversies, and Compromised Excellence
Raj Babbar, Rakhee Gulzar, and Dimple Kapadia in Rudaali (1993)
National Awards are widely regarded as one of the most prestigious honors in Indian cinema, valued for their integrity, lack of commercial flamboyance, and support for alternative, parallel, and small-budget yet impactful films across various languages and regions of the country. The National Award is a badge of honor for the filmography of any actor. Compared to other award ceremonies, National Awards are largely considered more authentic and unbiased, as these awards are selected by a jury of esteemed people.

Over the years, National Awards have diversified with many new awards introduced over some time. However, the diversification of the awards has also led to controversies regarding the awards and their adherence to unbiased selection. Time and again concerns were raised regarding the selection of artists for the National Awards, particularly in the case of films like “Rudaali” (1992), “Daman” (2000), Hum Tum” (2004), “The Kashmir Files” (2021), etc., and artists like Kirron Kher,...

The Making of the Indian Sci-Fi Box-Office Sensation Kalki 2898 Ad
Image
Each year the Busan International Film Festival screens movies at its outdoor stage. Among the titles this year was Kalki 2898 Ad, a sci-fi box-office sensation from India. The story pits superhero gods against each other in a dystopian future of deserts and decaying cities.

A passion project for writer-director Nag Ashwin, the film was shot over four years, interrupted at times due to the pandemic. More than 25 sets were built at Hyderabad’s Ramoji Film City. Nitin Zihani Choudhary’s production design included working models of specially designed vehicles, like the fan-favorite, AI-augmented Bujji chase car.

International icon Amitabh Bachchan plays immortal warrior Ashwatthama. Telegu action hero Prabhas is Bhairava,...

‘Full Circle’ Weaves an Intricate Web in Episodes 3 and 4
Image
Editors note: the following article contains spoilers for “Full Circle” Episodes 3 and 4.

Nothing is as satisfying as a big TV twist — a jaw-dropping finale or midseason moment that reinforces why the audience gravitated to an exceptional show to begin with, and why they’ll either come back for more or forever crave it.

Max’s “Full Circle” isn’t dealing in excessive convolution — not yet anyway — but Episodes 3 and 4 meter out small twists in just the right dosage, counteracting some slow plot development with clarity about past and current events. Written by Ed Solomon and directed by Steven Soderbergh, “Jared’s Body” divulges more about Nicky (Lucian Zanes) and his connection to the Brownes, while “Safe in the Circle” peels away at the link between the McCusker and Mahabir families.

Episode 3 is the slower of the two for most of its runtime, redeemed toward the end by the reveal that Nicky is Derek’s son.

Image
[Editor’s note: This article contains spoilers for “Full Circle” Episodes 1 and 2.]

If you find yourself, during the first two episodes of Max’s “Full Circle,” pointing excitedly at the screen when you see the literal circle for which the show is named, you are not alone.

Ed Solomon and Steven Soderbergh’s limited series follows the interconnected lives surrounding a kidnapping in New York City, but those threads are still obscured during the first two episodes which premiered Thursday on Max. Here’s what we know: Savitri Mahabir (Cch Pounder) wants revenge for her brother’s death, and that revenge will be exacted by kidnapping and possibly killing the child of a wealthy white family. Doing this will break the cycle (complete the circle) of her family’s luck and free them of unwanted negative energy. All of that is set up in Episode 1, along with a dizzying number of character introductions. It’s a credit to...

‘Pathaan,’ ‘Tenet’ Star Dimple Kapadia on Disney+ Hotstar Hit ‘Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo’: ‘I Can Do Action Better Than Any of the Action Heroes’
Image
Renowned Indian actor Dimple Kapadia (“Tenet”) is enjoying a blockbuster 2022-23 with everything she touches turning to gold.

Kapadia had a pivotal role in Disney’s 2022 mythological superhero film “Brahmastra Part One: Shiva.” In 2023, the actor had meaty roles in two of the year’s biggest Bollywood hits, “Pathaan” and “Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar.” And, taking a leaf from the Helen Mirren playbook, Kapadia took an action-heavy headline role in streamer Disney+ Hotstar’s patriarchy shattering drama series “Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo,” which released in May.

The series revolves around four women, the matriarch Savitri (Kapadia), her daughters-in-law and her daughter, who live in a forgotten village in the northwest of India. Savitri runs the Rani Cooperative, trading in products ranging from balms to textiles. But everything here isn’t what it seems – the cottage business is a front for the biggest drug cartel in South Asia.

When Homi Adajania fired Deepak Dobriyal from 'Saas Bahu aur Flamingo'
Image
Mumbai, May 15 (Ians) Actor Deepak Dobriyal may be a stellar performer but he was dropped from a role in the recently released streaming series ‘Saas Bahu aur Flamingo’ which tells the story of a drug empire run by women with a powerful matriarch at the helm of affairs.

In the series, Deepak plays the role of Monk, deadly opponent to Dimple Kapadia’s character of a drug lord. However, Deepak was considered for some other role by director Homi Adajania, who later decided to cast him as the anti-hero nemesis to the protagonist.

Elaborating on the same, Homi said: “I had actually initially cast Deepak Dobriyal as Proshun – the policeman. He was extremely excited about it, we had just finished ‘Angrezi Medium’ and we were looking forward to collaborating again. I remember him leaving the office and sending me messages asking more questions about Proshun’s character and at that...

“There is something way more devious, which is beyond her at this point in the narrative and she goes through all the tragic milestones that has were extremely sort of prominent for making her the character she is today.”

Kapil In ‘Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo,’ Explained: What Made Kapil A Ruthless Man?
Image
Stories about unexpected people taking charge of family businesses are not that uncommon. We have seen through many forms of cinema how one who was never expected to be the face of change ends up becoming one. We have The Godfather movies and Gangs of Wasseypur movies as a testament to how a candidate who was never seen as someone who would take the position of power takes up the seat only to completely underestimate their knowledge and understanding of their surroundings.

Kapil, the youngest son of Savitri in Saas, Bahu aur Flamingo, was all about not wanting to ever come back to his hometown of Hastipur. But he had to. His mother has been living there for years, and so has his wife Kajal, who has never left the town, let alone traveled to America with Kapil. Another reason he is coming back home is because he has been...

Almost every other day, we get to see different aspects of the criminal world being explored by filmmakers, allowing us to enjoy them from their perspective.
