Spy movies are typically led by heroes who are unafraid to get into the action and will kill whoever gets in their way. But such is not the case with “The Amateur.”

In James Hawes’ newest film, our hero is Charlie Heller (Rami Malek), who’s just an analyst at the CIA. He spends his days looking through files and staying out of the action. But when his wife is killed on a trip to London, he decides to take vengeance himself.

Academy Award-winning actor Rami Malek had his breakout role in the critically acclaimed series Mr. Robot, for which he received several accolades. As he's set to star in a different spy action film that involves cybersecurity and hacking, the actor also looked back at his role.

Speaking to Cbr's Grae Drake, while promoting his upcoming film, The Amateur, where he plays Charles Heller, a CIA cryptographer and vigilante, Malek addressed the possibility of a Mr. Robot reunion. "I don't think it'd be very different," he said of what the project would look like. "I just saw [series creator Sam Esmail] in London a week and a half ago. We had a typical British Sunday roast together. We're brothers. We will always be brothers and Christian [Slater] is here in New York on Broadway, so go check that out. We all keep up."

The actor also talked about his hacking and computer skills.

The first reviews forThe Amateur, which releases in theaters later this week, have begun to roll out. The Rami Malek-led spy thriller from 20th Century Studios has the award-winning Mr. Robot actor go back to the world of coding and vigilantism, this time in a big-budget action film. Spy thrillers never have been out of vogue and generally rely on action stars to drive the usual scenarios in this well-worn genre, but The Amateur is an effective twist on the formula by plucking a rather nondescript CIA analyst and letting him turn the tables on the bad guys using his own smarts and non-physical skills.

It really becomes Jason Bourne for nerds and as such stands right up there with Bourne as one of the more exciting spy thrillers in many years — at least one that is different and emotional with a nice human touch to it. The fun of it all, in addition to the obvious international globetrotting to the likes of London, Paris, Marseilles and Istanbul, is watching Rami Malek’s Charlie Heller pull off the impossible against formidable terrorists in clever ways no one sees coming.

A lot has changed in geopolitics since Charles Jarrott’s 1981 adaptation of Robert Littell’s novel The Amateur. Today, terrorism definitions are significantly muddier than the binaries of good and evil that were readily amplified during the Cold War. While the C.I.A. has always operated behind closed doors and in dark corners, governed by murky morality, it now does so behind the firewall of an ever-expanding surveillance state.

There are, for better or worse, plenty of male-led serial killer dramas: Dexter, You, Hannibal, etc. Many of them are fantastic shows to watch, the sort that keep fans on the edge of their seats and watching the clock for a week when the credits roll.

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen Rami Malek in a lead role. Since he won the Academy Award for Best Actor for “Bohemian Rhapsody” in 2018, his biggest roles have been as a Bond villain in “No Time to Die” Denzel Washington’s LAPD partner in crime thriller “The Little Things,” and a supporting role in “Oppenheimer’s” large ensemble. None of these movies were really what you’d call Rami Malek movies. “The Amateur,” which 20th Century released a trailer for on Wednesday, is a Rami Malek movie. 20th Century Studios is kicking off this chilly Wednesday afternoon with some heat from Rami Malek‘s latest film, The Amateur. The studio debuted a new action-packed trailer and poster for The Amateur, an espionage thriller in which Malek’s character uses his unique set of skills to find the people who killed his wife. He has no experience in the field, but that won’t stop him from launching a manhunt that defies expectations.

James Hawes directs The Amateur from a screenplay by Ken Nolan and Gary Spinelli based on the novel by Robert Littell. The film opens in theaters on April 11, 2025.

HBO has released its second teaser for its upcoming original drama series “Dune: Prophecy,” starring Emily Watson and Olivia Williams.

Part of the “Dune“-iverse and based on Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Halo will not have a third season, at least not at Paramount+. The streaming service has cancelled the sci-fi series inspired by the popular Xbox video gaming franchise of the same name. Season two premiered in February, and the finale aired on March 21st.

Master Chief’s fight has ended. Today, Paramount+ announced that it has cancelled Halo after just two seasons.

In a statement, a Paramount+ spokesperson said: “We are extremely proud of this ambitious series and would like to thank our partners at Xbox, 343 Industries and Amblin Television, along with showrunner and executive producer David Wiener, his fellow executive producers, the entire cast led by Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief and the amazing crew for all their outstanding work. We wish everyone the best going forward.” However, the battle may not be entirely over as Amblin Television, Xbox, and 343 Industries are said to be shopping the series to other buyers.

Paramount+ has cancelled Halo, Deadline has confirmed.

The news comes a few months after Season 2 of the live-action video game adaptation premiered on the streamer in February. Amblin Television, Xbox and 343 Industries are currently shopping Halo in hopes of finding it a new home, Deadline understands.

“We are extremely proud of this ambitious series and would like to thank our partners at Xbox, 343 Industries and Amblin Television, along with showrunner and executive producer David Wiener, his fellow executive producers, the entire cast led by Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief and the amazing crew for all their outstanding work. We wish everyone the best going forward,” a spokesperson for Paramount+ said in a statement Thursday.

The live-action “Halo” series has been canceled at Paramount+, Variety has learned.

The big budget series based on the popular Xbox video game franchise aired two seasons at the streaming service. The show originally debuted in 2022, while the second season aired between February and March 2024.

“Paramount+ can confirm that ‘Halo’ will not move forward with a third season on the service,” the streamer said in a stataement. “We are extremely proud of this ambitious series and would like to thank our partners at Xbox, 343 Industries and Amblin Television, along with showrunner and executive producer David Wiener, his fellow executive producers, the entire cast led by Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief and the amazing crew for all their outstanding work. We wish everyone the best going forward.”

According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Xbox, Amblin TV, and 343 Industries will try to shop the series to other outlets.
